German arrest warrant over Nord Stream blast mystery

German state prosecutors trying to solve the mystery of who blew up the Nord Stream gas pipelines under the Baltic Sea in 2022 have issued an arrest warrant for a Ukrainian diving instructor.

The suspect has been named as Volodymyr Z by German media, who have treated the sabotage like a sensational true crime drama.

Ines Peterson, a spokeswoman for Germany’s prosecutor general, declined to confirm the arrest warrant, telling the BBC that her office never commented so as not to jeopardise the investigation by giving the suspect a chance to escape.

But the Polish prosecutor general's spokeswoman, Anna Adamiak, in Warsaw told the BBC's Adam Easton that a European Arrest Warrant had indeed been passed to them by German prosecutors.

When Polish officers went to Volodymyr Z’s home in early July, he had already left the country for Ukraine, she said.

He had until then been living in a quiet residential area of Pruszków, a town near Warsaw, German media say.

New TEMPO Cosmic Data Story Makes Air Quality Data Publicly Available

On May 30th, 2024, NASA and the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian announced the public release of "high-quality, near real-time air quality data" from NASA’s TEMPO (Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution) mission.

The NASA Science Activation program's Cosmic Data Stories team, led by Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, has since released a new "Data Story" – an interactive, digital showcase of new science imagery, including ideas for exploration and scientific highlights shared in a brief video and narrative text – that provides a quick and easy way for the public to visualize this important, large data set from TEMPO.

TEMPO allows unprecedented monitoring of air quality down to neighborhood scales, with its hourly daytime scans over North America. Air pollutants like NO2, produced, for example, by the burning of fossil fuels, can trigger significant health issues, especially among people with pre-existing illnesses such as asthma.

The interactive views in the TEMPO Data Story provide public access to the same authentic data that scientists use and invite the public to explore patterns in their local air quality.

For example, how do NO2 emissions vary in our area throughout the day and week? What are possible sources of NO2 in our community? How does our air quality compare with that of other communities with similar population densities, or with nearby urban or rural communities?

TEMPO’s hyper-localized data will allow communities to make informed decisions and take action to improve their air quality.

The Cosmic Data Story team is grateful to TEMPO scientists, Xiong Liu and Caroline Nowlan, for providing the team with early access to the data and guidance on NO2 phenomena that learners can explore in the data.

The TEMPO Data Story, featured on TEMPO’s webpage for the public, adds Earth science data to the portfolio of Cosmic Data Stories that is already making astrophysics data accessible to the public.

TEMPO Team Atmospheric Physicist from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, Caroline Nowlan, had this to say: "TEMPO produces data that are really useful for scientists, but are also important for the general public and policy makers.

We are thrilled that the Cosmic Data Stories team has made a tool that allows everyone to explore TEMPO data and learn about pollution across North America and in their own communities."

This case is addressing more than getting their profile back on twitter, its much more.

1. Challenging the constitutionality of Section 230 to immunize social media for violating the First Amendment of free speech. The case states that congress intentionally made the wording so vague, so social media with orders from politicians the leftists to order termination of the free speech they disagree with, conservatives, supporters, etc.

All gov agencies have used it to shut down any discussion ie covid, 2020 election. Basically the left controls social media by threatening to remove Section 230 if they don't do what they say.

The case is asking the court to rule, that Social Media has and never has had immunity for shutting down free speech.

And the court yo restore the first Amendment for all those who have lost the social media accounts to be restored.

Section 230 has to be redone to in detail so that this cannot be used by the left. The initial definition was to protect children on the internet, but because congress wrote it intentionally bad its morphed into an weapon against our constitutional rights.

NASA Demonstrates ‘Ultra-Cool’ Quantum Sensor for First Time in Space

NASA’s Cold Atom Lab, a first-of-its-kind facility aboard the International Space Station, has taken another step toward revolutionizing how quantum science can be used in space.

Members of the science team measured subtle vibrations of the space station with one of the lab’s onboard tools — the first time ultra-cold atoms have been employed to detect changes in the surrounding environment in space.

The study, which appeared in Nature Communications on Aug. 13, also reports the longest demonstration of the wave-like nature of atoms in freefall in space.

The Cold Atom Lab science team made their measurements with a quantum tool called an atom interferometer, which can precisely measure gravity, magnetic fields, and other forces.

Scientists and engineers on Earth use this tool to study the fundamental nature of gravity and advance technologies that aid aircraft and ship navigation.

(Cell phones, transistors, and GPS are just a few other major technologies based on quantum science but do not involve atom interferometry.)

Physicists have been eager to apply atom interferometry in space because the microgravity there allows longer measurement times and greater instrument sensitivity, but the exquisitely sensitive equipment has been considered too fragile to function for extended periods without hands-on assistance.

The Cold Atom Lab, which is operated remotely from Earth, has now shown it’s possible.

“Reaching this milestone was incredibly challenging, and our success was not always a given,” said Jason Williams, the Cold Atom Lab project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.

“It took dedication and a sense of adventure by the team to make this happen.”

Space-based sensors that can measure gravity with high precision have a wide range of potential applications.

For instance, they could reveal the composition of planets and moons in our solar system, because different materials have different densities that create subtle variations in gravity.

This type of measurement is already being performed by the U.S.-German collaboration GRACE-FO (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Follow-on), which detects slight changes in gravity to track the movement of water and ice on Earth. An atom interferometer could provide additional precision and stability, revealing more detail about surface mass changes.

Precise measurements of gravity could also offer insights into the nature of dark matter and dark energy, two major cosmological mysteries. Dark matter is an invisible substance five times more common in the universe than the “regular” matter that composes planets, stars, and everything else we can see.

Dark energy is the name given to the unknown driver of the universe’s accelerating expansion.

“Atom interferometry could also be used to test Einstein’s theory of general relativity in new ways,” said University of Virginia professor Cass Sackett, a Cold Atom Lab principal investigator and co-author of the new study.

“This is the basic theory explaining the large-scale structure of our universe, and we know that there are aspects of the theory that we don’t understand correctly.

This technology may help us fill in those gaps and give us a more complete picture of the reality we inhabit.”

About the size of a minifridge, the Cold Atom Lab launched to the space station in 2018 with the goal of advancing quantum science by putting a long-term facility in the microgravity environment of low Earth orbit.

The lab cools atoms to almost absolute zero, or minus 459 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 273 degrees Celsius).

At this temperature, some atoms can form a Bose-Einstein condensate, a state of matter in which all atoms essentially share the same quantum identity. As a result, some of the atoms’ typically microscopic quantum properties become macroscopic, making them easier to study.

Quantum properties include sometimes acting like solid particles and sometimes like waves.

Scientists don’t know how these building blocks of all matter can transition between such different physical behaviors, but they’re using quantum technology like what’s available on the Cold Atom Lab to seek answers.

In microgravity, Bose-Einstein condensates can reach colder temperatures and exist for longer, giving scientists more opportunities to study them.

The atom interferometer is among several tools in the facility enabling precision measurements by harnessing the quantum nature of atoms.

Due to its wave-like behavior, a single atom can simultaneously travel two physically separate paths.

If gravity or other forces are acting on those waves, scientists can measure that influence by observing how the waves recombine and interact.

Colossal X-class solar flare erupts from 'rule-breaking' sunspot and Earth is in the firing line

The active sun is kicking into overdrive.

In the early morning hours today (Aug. 14), the sun unleashed the most powerful class of solar flare, in a potent X-class eruption.

The solar flare peaked at 2:40 a.m. EDT (0640 GMT) and caused shortwave radio blackouts over the sunlit portion of Earth at the time of the eruption, Asia and the Indian Ocean.

What makes this X-class solar flare particularly interesting is that it erupted from 'rule-breaking' sunspot AR3784 which had already garnered the attention of solar scientists and aurora chasers due to its strange polarity.

The sunspot's polarity breaks a hundred-year-old rule, Hale's Law, whereby sunspots in the Northern Hemisphere should be polarized -+. Instead, sunspot AR3784 is polarized ±, a whole 90-degree twist, according to Spaceweather.com.

It's not the first sunspot to break the rule, according to spaceweather.com, it happens approximately 3% of the time. However, a majority of "rule-breakers" show a "reversed polarity" of +- instead of -+, but AR3784 lies somewhere between the two.

Experts at Spaceweather.com suggested that the "magnetic underpinnings of this sunspot are corkscrewing in an unusual way. If opposite magnetic polarities get twisted together too tightly, there could be an X-class solar flare." Lo and behold the sunspot did just that.

Solar flares are eruptions on the sun's surface that release intense bursts of electromagnetic radiation.

These flares occur when built-up magnetic energy in the solar atmosphere is suddenly released.

They are classified by size into different categories, with X-class flares being the most powerful. M-class flares are 10 times less intense than X-class, followed by C-class flares, which are 10 times weaker than M-class. B-class flares are 10 times weaker than C-class, and A-class flares, which are 10 times weaker than B-class, have no significant effects on Earth.

Within each class, numbers from 1 to 10 (and beyond for X-class) indicate the relative strength of the flare.

Powerful solar flares like the one released this morning can often be accompanied by a coronal mass ejection — a large plume of plasma and magnetic field from the sun — it has yet to be confirmed whether a CME joined this eruption.

CMEs carry electrically charged particles known as ions, and when these collide with Earth's magnetosphere, they can trigger geomagnetic storms.

During these storms, the ions interact with gases in Earth's atmosphere, releasing energy in the form of light. This phenomenon is recognized as the northern lights, or aurora borealis, in the Northern Hemisphere, and as the southern lights, or aurora australis, in the Southern Hemisphere.

If a CME is confirmed, we could be in for yet more geomagnetic storms and heightened aurora activity, so get those cameras charged just in case. We await further confirmation.

One thing we do know that accompanied the X-flare was a strong radio blackout on Earth.

The shortwave radio blackouts detected over Asia and the Indian Ocean resulted from the intense burst of X-rays and extreme ultraviolet radiation emitted during the X-flare.

bp and Nasa sign agreement to boost energy and space tech

BP America has entered a Space Act Agreement with Nasa to enhance technological advancements in both energy production and space exploration.

Under the collaboration, bp and Nasa will leverage digital technologies and decades of technical expertise from operating in extreme environments.

The Space Act Agreement, under the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958, allows the two entities to share digital models, simulations and technical know-how.

This collaboration aims to improve the visualisation of equipment in challenging locations, whether deep underwater or distant planets.

BP anticipates that this agreement will advance both energy production on Earth and human space exploration of the Moon and Mars.

The initial phase of the agreement will focus on developing standards and enhancing the capabilities of visualisation and simulation models.

As the partnership progresses, the exchange of knowledge in remote operating practices, including safety and communications, will be explored.

This could extend to process control, integrity management, and the incorporation of predictive analytics and AI.

Future collaborations between bp and Nasa may delve into hydrogen, regenerative fuel cells, high-capacity batteries, solar power systems, small fission systems, and advanced power management and distribution.

This agreement builds on a historical relationship, with bp offshore workers training at Nasa’s Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory and Nasa’s use of bp’s Castrol lubricants for more than six decades.

BP principal technical programme manager Ken Nguyen said: “bp has built a proud legacy of technological innovation as we deliver the energy the world needs today while investing in the energy system of tomorrow.

Watch a Perseid fireball light up the skies above Macedonia

In the early hours of Tuesday morning (Aug. 13), at around 1:03 a.m. local time, a dazzling Perseid fireball streaked across Macedonian skies above Lake Ohrid.

A webcam system installed throughout the Lake Ohrid region captured the dramatic sight.

"The video with the meteor is incredible. We see in the video 7 seconds of a falling meteor. I love technology today," photographer Stojan Stojanovski, who created the webcam system, told Space.com in an email.

The Perseid meteor shower, also known as the Perseids, is visible annually from mid-July until late August.

This year, the shower peaked around the night of Aug. 11 and before dawn on Aug. 12.

The few nights surrounding the peak are also good for catching a glimpse of these iconic meteors.

The shower is caused by Earth passing through debris — bits of ice and rock — left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle which last passed by Earth in 1992.

When the debris hits Earth's atmosphere, it burns up and creates the dramatic "shooting stars" we know as the Perseids.

Most of the Perseids are tiny, about the size of a sand grain. Almost none of the fragments hit the ground, but if one does, it's called a meteorite.

The difference between a meteor and a fireball like the one seen in the video lies with brightness.

Simply put, meteors brighter than Venus are classified as fireballs.

Stojanovski began setting up the webcam network in 2018 with help from local businesses to promote tourism in the Lake Ohrid region, as part of Ohrid Info.

Stojanovski hopes that the installment of 180-degree cameras will give him and the local Ohrid Astronomy Association an even better view of the night sky.

"The 180-degree point-of-view cameras in the future will catch more meteors I hope," Stojanovski said.

Stojanovski also captured a stunning photograph of a Perseid meteor above Lake Ohrid on Aug. 11, 2024.

The glow from wildfires is visible in the distance.

"There are some wildfires and it's hard to find good spots in the mountains", Stojanovski told Space.com.

The former UF president tripled his office’s spending compared to predecessor

In his 17-month stint as UF president, Ben Sasse more than tripled his office’s spending, directing millions in university funds into secretive consulting contracts and high-paying positions for his GOP allies.

Sasse ballooned spending under the president’s office to $17.3 million in his first year in office — up from $5.6 million in former UF President Kent Fuchs’ last year, according to publicly available administrative budget data.

A majority of the spending surge was driven by lucrative contracts with big-name consulting firms and high-salaried, remote positions for Sasse’s former U.S. Senate staff and Republican officials.

Sasse’s consulting contracts have been kept largely under wraps, leaving the public in the dark about what the contracted firms did to earn their fees. The university also declined to clarify specific duties carried out by Sasse’s ex-Senate staff, several of whom were salaried as presidential advisers.

The university said Sasse’s budget expansion went through the “appropriate approval process” but did not answer questions about how Sasse bankrolled his splurges, where the funds originated or who authorized the spending.

Keeping friends close

Amid protests over his conservative track record as a Nebraska Republican senator, Sasse promised during his ascension to the UF presidency in Fall 2022 that he would divorce himself from partisan politics under what he called a vow of “political celibacy.”

But the senator-turned-university president quietly broke that promise in his 17-month term at the university’s helm, hiring six ex-Senate staffers and two former Republican officials to high-paying, remote jobs at the university.

Under Sasse’s administration, two of his former Senate staffers — Raymond Sass and James Wegmann — were among the highest-ranking and highest-paid officials at UF. Both worked remotely from the D.C. area, roughly 800 miles from UF’s main campus in Gainesville.

Sass, Sasse’s former Senate chief of staff, was UF’s vice president for innovation and partnerships — a position which didn’t exist under previous administrations. His starting salary at UF was $396,000, more than double the $181,677 he made on Capitol Hill.

Wegmann, Sasse’s former Senate communications director, is UF’s vice president of communications, a position he works remotely from his $725,000 home in Washington, D.C.

Salaried at $432,000, Wegmann replaced Steve Orlando, who made $270,000 a year in the position and had nearly 30 years of experience in media relations at UF before he was demoted to be Wegmann’s deputy.

The Alligator first reported on Wegmann and Sass’ appointments last October, but an additional four who followed Sasse from the Senate to the Swamp have gone unnoticed by the press.

Sasse appointed his former Senate press secretary, Taylor Sliva, as UF’s Assistant Vice President of Presidential Communications and Public Affairs, a new position. Sliva’s $232,000 salary made him the second-highest-paid employee in UF’s Office of Strategic Communications and Marketing, trailing only Wegmann…

New ISS images showcase auroras, moon and space station in glorious photos

The moon's glow meets a multicolored aurora in a new astronaut image from space.

International Space Station (ISS) and NASA astronaut Matthew Dominick, a veteran photographer of the Expedition 71 crew, captured the moon and auroras from his perch 250 miles (400 kilometers) above Earth.

"The aurora have been amazing the past few days.

Great timing for trying out a new lens that recently arrived on Cygnus," Dominick said on X, formerly Twitter, in one of the posts. (Cygnus is a cargo spacecraft from Northrop Grumman that arrived Aug. 6).

Dominick and the Expedition 71 crew witnessed powerful auroras in recent days, which happen when the sun's charged particles interact with gas molecules in Earth's atmosphere.

The gas molecules emit light when they become excited to higher energy levels than the norm, with different molecules spurring different colors of light. (Green, for example, results from oxygen.)

Both green and red hues are visible in Dominick's recent images and video.

"The moon makes it way towards the horizon to set amongst red and green aurora," Dominick wrote in another X post.

"Felt so lucky to grab this shot."

The red-and-green auroras, tinged with moonlight, are Dominick's latest photos as part of the SpaceX Crew-8 mission.

His visit happens to coincide with a peak in auroral activity, allowing him to capture images of auroral shows backdropped by spacecraft like Boeing's Starliner, SpaceX Crew Dragon or Russia's Soyuz.

Dominick said recently that he has obtained as many as 200,000 photos aboard the ISS, during the mission meant to last half a year.

Many of these photos were taken in his spare time, although, like all astronauts, he also does photography for Earth observation and ISS maintenance purposes.

Fire at Russian Savasleyka airbase detected by NASA

A NASA satellite recorded a fire near the Savasleyka airfield in the Nizhny Novgorod region of Russia after a drone strike.

‘Satellites of the system for detecting fires on the surface of the earth recorded a fire in the area of the Savasleyka military airfield, which was attacked by drones last night.

The fact of the explosion on the territory of the airbase is also confirmed by the geolocation of one of the eyewitnesses‘ videos,’ the post says.

As reported by Ukrinform, explosions were heard in the Nizhny Novgorod region of Russia, where the Savasleyka military airfield is located, this morning, and local authorities said that air defence was operating.

According to eyewitnesses, there were ten hits.

Savasleyka is home to, among other things, MiG-31 aircraft, Kinzhal missile carriers, and a branch of the 4th State Centre for Aviation Personnel Training and Military Testing of the Russian Defence Ministry.

In addition, local publics also write about explosions at the Russian military airfields of Borisoglebsk and Baltimore.

Senate bill would create center to study satellite interference with astronomy

Legislation introduced in the U.S. Senate would create a new center devoted to protecting astronomy from interference caused by satellite constellations even as existing efforts involving organizations and companies make progress.

The Dark and Quiet Skies Act of 2024, introduced Aug. 1 by Sens. John Hickenlooper (D-Colo.) and Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), would direct the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to create a “center of excellence” devoted to mitigating light and radio-frequency interference by satellites on astronomical observations.

“Light and radio pollution from satellites are keeping space’s mysteries beyond our reach,” Hickenlooper said in an Aug. 5 statement about the bill.

“Preserving the darkness of the night sky will amplify our research.”

The center, overseen by NIST but run by an outside entity such as a nonprofit organization or university, would work with both astronomers and satellite operators to develop best practices to mitigate interference caused by satellites in optical and infrared wavelengths from reflected sunlight and radio wavelengths from the satellites’ transmissions.

The center would also conduct “transdisciplinary research, development, and demonstration projects” on ways to reduce satellite interference.

The center would work with industry to disseminate voluntary guidelines but would not have any regulatory authority.

The bill authorizes $20 million for the center for fiscal years 2025 through 2029.

If the bill is enacted, the center would join other initiatives established in the last five years to address concerns about interference large satellite constellations pose for astronomy.

Astronomers sounded the alarm about that threat after the launch of the first SpaceX Starlink satellites in May 2019, which were visible to the naked eye in a “string of pearls” display in the days after launch.

SpaceX has since launched more than 6,800 Starlink satellites, with thousands more planned by that company and other constellation developers.

One such effort is the International Astronomical Union’s Centre for the Protection of the Dark and Quiet Sky from Satellite Constellation Interference, or IAU CPS.

That center is involved in several projects that include development of software tools for astronomers as well as public outreach and policy development.

The IAU announced Aug. 8 that CPS received a $750,000 grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation to support that work.

The money will fund work on software to allow astronomers to predict what satellites will pass through the field of view of their observations, enabling them to work around the worst of the interference.

The suspect has reportedly been identified as Ukrainian national ‘Vladimir Z’

The German Federal Public Prosecutor has issued the first arrest warrant in connection with the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, local media have reported. The suspect is believed to be a Ukrainian citizen identified as ‘Vladimir Z’. It is unclear if the suspect has links to Kiev’s military or intelligence services.

No one has so far claimed responsibility for the blasts which ruptured the pipelines in the Baltic Sea in September 2022. As a result of the sabotage, gas supplies from Russia to Germany were halted. The parallel Nord Stream 2 line, which was also damaged, had never entered operation, having ben delayed by EU bureaucracy.

German state broadcaster ARD, the Suddeutsche Zeitung and Die Zeit media outlets reported on Wednesday that Federal Public Prosecutor Jens Rommel had issued the first arrest warrant in the case in early June. While the alleged suspect has been identified, two of his compatriots, a couple, have reportedly been named as potential accomplices.

German officials have reportedly filed a cooperation request with their Polish counterparts in the hope of locating the suspect, who is said to have been tracked to a location west of Warsaw before disappearing.

ARD reported that it had managed to reach the suspect by phone on Tuesday, adding that 'Vladimir Z' insisted he had nothing to do with the sabotage.

According to the state broadcaster, the presumed saboteurs are said to have sailed to the sabotage site on a yacht named the ‘Andromeda’. However, Polish authorities have insisted that the vessel’s voyage was “purely touristic” in nature, with the crew apparently not flagged as suspicious.

German prosecutors are skeptical of the Polish version of events, ARD reported. Polish officials also supposedly told their German counterparts that CCTV footage of the yacht and its crew had already been deleted.

Despite EU inter-state regulations, Warsaw has failed to respond to Berlin’s request for cooperation over Vladimir Z’s possible whereabouts, ARD alleged.

According to German media, investigators have yet to find any solid proof linking the suspect directly to the Ukrainian military or intelligence service. Senior officials in Kiev have publicly denied any involvement in the destruction of the Nord Stream pipelines.

The German prosecutor’s office has declined to offer an official comment.

The Russian authorities have pointed the finger at the US as standing the most to gain from the disruption of Russian gas supplies to Germany. Moscow has cited the public grievances voiced by Washington regarding the Nord Stream project on multiple occasions prior to the destruction of the conduits.

The Kremlin has also accused the West of stonewalling investigation efforts into the blasts.

Watch Mars and Jupiter Appear to Almost Touch in a Rare Conjunction

Two of Earth’s neighbors will appear awfully close in the sky on August 14, as the orbits of Mars and Jupiter make them seem to almost touch.

A conjunction is an astronomical term for when two or more bodies in space closely approach each other, relative to the view from Earth.

While the objects appear close to each other, in actuality they can still be millions—or trillions—of miles from each other. In the case of the Mars and Jupiter conjunction, the two planets will, at their nearest, be more than 300 million miles (500 million kilometers) apart.

After the conjunction, Mars will begin inching higher in the sky from our perspective on Earth, while Jupiter will also move up, but at a faster rate, eventually pulling away towards the evening sky, according to EarthSky.

The pair will commence with their celestial rendezvous at roughly 10:30 p.m. on August 13, although the best viewing from the eastern coast will be in the hours before sunrise during the following day.

The two planets, as always, will be visible to the unaided eye.

Jupiter will be the brighter of the pair, and can be contrasted to Mars’ signature red hue.

With a decent pair of binoculars, Jupiter’s moons may be visible, and for telescope owners, the two planets will be visible in the same view.

To get a glimpse of the conjunction, look towards the eastern sky.

The planetary alignment will appear in front of the Taurus constellation close to Aldebaran.

Skywatching apps, such as Sky Guide and StarMap 3D+, can also help you locate the pair in the night sky.

Conjunctions involving Mars and Jupiter aren’t that rare, taking place around once every 26 to 27 months.

The pair last passed each other in 2022.

This year’s conjunction, however, is notable for just how close the planets will appear to each other.

Mars and Jupiter won’t appear in such close proximity again until December 1, 2033, according to Space.com.

“Planetary conjunctions traditionally have been more the stuff of astrology than serious astronomy, but they never fail to impress during observations, particularly when the gas giants are involved,” said Mitzi Adams, an astronomer and researcher at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in a post on the space agency’s website about the 2022 conjunction.

U.S. Space Force Brig. Gen. Jacob Middleton became the new commander of U.S. Space Forces in Europe – Space Forces Africa in a change of command ceremony at the Ramstein Officers Club Tuesday.

U.S. Space Forces in Europe – Space Forces Africa, also known as SPACEFOREUR-AF, is the U.S. Space Force component field command charged with supporting both U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command, encompassing 51 countries in Europe and 53 countries in Africa, respectively.

“We recognize the importance of space to our allies and partners, as well as our own national security,” Middleton said.

“In the last year, SPACEFOREUR-AF has established relationships across two continents to expand space situational awareness of events in today’s contested space environment.

I look forward to engaging with our Space Force leaders and combatant commanders, to working alongside our Airmen and Guardians, and to building on those partnerships to tell the next chapter of the United States Space Force story.”

Middleton said that a U.S. Space Force goal is for field components such as SPACEFOREUR-AF to build on existing alliances and partnerships to enhance interoperability and resiliency, thereby bolstering the security and long-term sustainability of space. The scope of missions across two continents and their importance to the international order and the balance of rules governing use of space is the cornerstone of the SPACEFOREUR-AF mission.

U.S. Space Force Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman expanded on that theme during the ceremony.

“This unit is singularly responsible for integrating space forces with two combatant commands, enhancing the security of our nation and its allies from Iceland to South Africa,” Saltzman said at the ceremony.

“In just eight months, SPACEFOREUR-AF established relationships with 15 other spacefaring nations, enhanced integration with NATO, via automated data flow, and provided training on Joint Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations.”

Saltzman noted Middleton was the right choice to head the rapidly evolving SPACEFOREUR-AF and expand relationships with our allies and partners.

He added that Middleton’s experience working with the Joint Staff, National Security Council, and U.S. legislature all empower Middleton to further bolster expanded connections with NATO, allies and other vital regional partners across two continents to integrate space power.

“I can confidently say that there are few more impactful positions in leadership within the Space Force than that of a service component commander, especially one supporting two regions,” Saltzman said.

“Elevating the command to a one-star level reaffirms the Space Force’s commitment both to our Joint Force and to our international partners.

US Approves $20BN In Weapons Sales To Israel As Wider War Looms

After already having given over $3 billion in annual foreign aid to America's number one ally in the Middle East stretching back years, the State Department has approved a series of potential weapons sales to Israel worth over $20 billion. This is the military-industrial complex's bread and butter: give allies huge amounts of foreign aid, and those dollars eventually return to line the pockets of the big US defense firms.

The sales are expected to include some 50 F-15 fighter jets and tank munitions, advanced air-to-air missiles, tactical vehicles, and on top of all this 50,000 high-explosive 120mm mortar rounds.

Some of this might be purchased with the $3.5 billion in military assistance recently released to Israel in the form of Foreign Military Financing.

While it will take years before 50 F-15s and many of the heavier, more sophisticated weapons would be delivered to Israel, it comes at a moment of deep global divide related to Israel's ongoing military operations in Gaza.

Hamas sources have said that nearly 40,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war began last October, or about 2% of the total population. Much of this killing is being done by US-supplied weaponry courtesy of the US taxpayer.

The State Department in announcing the huge package said it is 'vital' to American interests:

"The United States is committed to the security of Israel, and it is vital to U.S. national interests to assist Israel to develop and maintain a strong and ready self-defense capability. This proposed sale is consistent with those objectives."

Currently, there's a growing divide within Israeli leadership over a path forward in the war, particularly after yesterday Fitch downgraded Israel's rating from A+ to A.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid on Wednesday warned Israel is heading for an economic disaster under the policies Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich.

"The finance minister and prime minister both issued statements yesterday in which they said that the lowering of Israel’s credit rating is a result of the war," Lapid said. "That is a lie. Both of them are lying to the public."

Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force visits Vandenberg SFB

Chief Master Sgt. of the Space Force John Bentivegna met with Guardians and Airmen during his first visit as the CMSSF to Vandenberg Space Force Base, July 31-Aug. 1.

Bentivegna began his visit with a tour of the child development center, youth center, Hawk’s Cove and the 30th Medical Group.

During these visits, he interacted with families and staff, gaining insights into the programs and services each facility offers to the base.

Additionally, he visited the 533rd Training Squadron.

“The work being done by our Guardians and Airmen here at Vandenberg (SFB) is of critical importance to our nation's interests,” he emphasized.

“It's wonderful to witness the growth of the mission, observe how our Guardians, Airmen, and their families are integrating with the surrounding communities, and see how Team Vandenberg is effectively collaborating with our industry partners to ensure the mission's success.”

During his visit, Bentivegna hosted a town hall meeting, where he addressed questions from the Vandenberg SFB community regarding the future of the Space Force, strategies for maintaining and enhancing warfighting capabilities, ensuring that the Space Force remains robust and effective.

“Team Vandenberg is an exceptional team and setting the standard for Assured Space Access,” he said.

“The work you do here is critical, it is significant, and I eagerly anticipate the remarkable achievements you will accomplish in the future.”

Bentivegna’s visit underscored a commitment to understanding and improving the various facets of life and operations at Vandenberg SFB, from community support to medical care and training.

Monkeypox has been declared a public health emergency in Africa.

The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared this week that the increasing spread of mpox across the continent is a health emergency, warning the virus might ultimately spill across international borders.

On Wednesday, the World Health Organization is convening its own expert meeting to consider making a similar emergency declaration over mpox. The U.N. health agency said there have been more than 14,000 cases and 524 deaths this year, which already exceed last year’s figures.

More than 30 senior enlisted leaders from Space Systems Command gathered for the inaugural SSC SEL Summit, held at Los Angeles Air Force Base, July 16-18.

This first-ever summit, hosted by Chief Master Sgt. Jacqueline Sauvé, SSC’s SEL, brought together SELs from across the command’s geographically separated units from Patrick Space Force Base, Peterson SFB, Vandenberg SFB, and Kirtland Air Force Base, in addition to those local to Los Angeles AFB.

Built as a forum for leaders to share best practices, discuss current and emerging issues, and develop strategies to improve the effectiveness of the SSC enterprise, the summit offered opportunities for SELs to strengthen the support they provide across the command.

“The extensive experience of our SELs plays a crucial role in developing and inspiring the next generation of Space Force and Air Force professionals - building a stronger warfighting force,” Sauvé emphasized.

“Our SELs form the backbone of SSC, challenging assumptions and effectively navigating bureaucracy.

As our Chief explained during a recent briefing to Congress about ensuring operational readiness, SELs focus on helping to change the lives of our members.

We support their bold initiatives, advocate for quality-of-life improvements, and generate connectedness within their respective organizations.

The summit began with a question-and-answer session with the command’s top leadership: Lt. Gen. Philip Garrant, SSC commander; Joy White, SSC executive director; and Col. Michelle Idle, SSC deputy commander.

Garrant and White highlighted that the Space Force is focused on current capabilities and optimizing what is available today.

Their discussion also emphasized the goal of providing acquirers with operational experience and exposure, to drive unity of effort across the service.

White shared the ongoing need for a unique Space Force and SSC culture and charged each senior enlisted leader “to keep the advice coming!

Dr. Jason ‘JW’ Womack, U.S. Space Force Enterprise Talent Management Office development branch chief, provided a key session focused around Collective Sensemaking.

Exercises during this event challenged attendees to consider all the roles they play throughout the day — Guardian, Airman, supervisor, parent, spouse — and apply those lenses to better understand the need for diverse perspectives that can help improve how people overcome challenges.

SSC SEL Summit attendees also welcomed retired Chief Master Sgt Ericka Kelly, 17th Chief Master Sgt. of the U.S. Air Force Reserve Command.

After sharing her personal story of how she joined the Air Force, Kelly encouraged leaders to share their stories with their personnel to build trust, demonstrate empathy and to become more resilient leaders.

To further demonstrate the extensive mission and reach of the command, summit participants visited Space X headquarters as well as SSC’s Space C2 and Space Den offices.

These tours highlighted how SSC is working to pursue domestic and international partnerships to maintain competitive advantage in space and deter conflict.

The summit concluded with opportunities to engage with SSC’s senior leaders — the chance to ask questions, provide feedback and discuss issues that impact our workforce.

“We’re so grateful for the talented SELs we have in our command,” Sauvé said.

“Investing in their development is an essential element to our readiness given the tough problems we expect our leaders to solve for their teams.”

Food inflation is at the heart of voter anxiety over price increases. The Financial Times poll found that seventy-eight percent of voters said food inflation is a major drag on their financial situation.

Despite the rhetoric from the White House, which seeks to downplay this issue by pointing to recent moderations in price increases, the fact remains that grocery prices have skyrocketed under Harris’s watch. Harris played a pivotal role in the legislative agenda that led us to this point. Her tie-breaking votes in the Senate helped push through trillions in spending, which many economists say helped fuel the inflation crisis.

The first 42 months of the the Biden-Harris administration have seen the biggest increase in food inflation under any president since Jimmy Carter. It is the third largest increase over the first three-and-a-half years of a presidential term ever recorded in data going back to 1952, trailing Carter’s record and Nixon’s second term.

By contrast, grocery prices rose just 6.3 percent over the first 42 months of Donald Trump’s presidency.

Food prices are still rising. The index for food rose 0.2 percent in July and was up 0.1 percent for the category covering groceries, the second straight month of rising prices following four months of negative readings on the consumer price index for food at home.

Britain Is Proof: Globalists Plan To Use Migrants As A Mercenary Army Against The West

Why do western officials insist on gaslighting the public on illegal border crossings? Why do they attempt to destroy anyone that publicly opposes mass immigration from the third world? The laws on the books support the public’s majority position on immigration – Come here legally or don’t come here at all. In Europe, the UK and the US polls show a majority of citizens want reductions in immigration and better border security. Yet, government officials, who often claim to be “protecting democracy,” brazenly ignore these majority concerns. Why?

For many years now I have offered a specific theory on the true agenda behind open border policies in western countries and I believe this theory answers most of questions surrounding illegal immigration.

The common claim within the Liberty Movement is that this is all part of the “Cloward-Piven Strategy”: A social engineering method which uses large scale relocation of migrants into a society in order to destabilize that nation. The goal is to import people with a incompatible or hostile ideology and, eventually, the target culture will break down and be forced to accept a new system of governance (i.e. from free markets and liberty to communism and slavery).

If western populations are unified in opposing the globalist ideology then the task of deconstruction becomes impossible for them. So, they simply destroy the west from within by introducing millions of people that will NEVER assimilate or unify.

My theory goes beyond the Cloward-Piven explanation, though. I think there is a deeper and even more sinister purpose to the introduction of third world migrants to the US and Europe. I summarized my position in my article ‘Cultural Replacement: Why The Immigration Crisis Is Being Deliberately Engineered’ published in January. I noted:

“I have mentioned this in previous articles and I continue to believe that one of the main purposes for the establishment to leave borders open and entice illegals to enter is to create a migrant army; a situation in which millions of illegals will be offered easy citizenship in exchange for service. I also believe that this migrant army will be used against the American public (the real citizenry) to impose martial law measures in the wake of a national disaster…”

In other words, my argument was that migrants from the third-world are not merely being used as unwitting tools for cultural saturation of the west. They’re not being shipped in by the millions to simply live off the fruits of our labor and our ancestors’ labors. I believe they are being brought into the US, the UK and Europe as enforcers for the establishment.

Think about it – They are essentially bought and paid for. They are mercenaries recruited with offers of easy citizenship, government handouts and the opportunity to brutalize the very western (and generally white) populations they despise. And, they are allowed to do this while hiding behind government law enforcement agencies for protection.

With a two tier policing system in place, the migrants can do whatever they want without much fear of repercussions. In Europe there is the added problem of expanding Islamic immigration which is directed by religious doctrine to conquer non-believers. From the Quran:

Third world migrants are hired muscle for the political elites. They can terrorize the populace, and if the native population takes action to defend itself the government can step in, call them hateful racists and declare martial law. It’s a win-win. The migrants then help with the enforcement of that martial law as the government doubles down on two-tier policing.

There are those that insist the anti-immigration position is a “false paradigm.” The notion of “false paradigms” has become a plague among liberty movement thinkers that needs to be abandoned. The reality is that we are not just fighting the globalists, we also have to fight the people that wittingly or unwittingly aid the globalists. The elites help instigate conflicts, but many of these divisions already exist without their influence.

Under pressure to demonstrate she is not as hostile to Israel as some might believe, Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris on Mondaynamed a campaign liaison to the Jewish community. He is Ilan Goldenberg==, who served as an adviser to Harris on the Middle East before transitioning to his new role. Now he will guide the campaign on "issues related to the U.S.-Israel relationship, the war in Gaza, and the broader Middle East," a campaign aide told Jewish Insider.

So, is it a peace offering?Well, Goldenberg has longstanding ties to the anti-Israel group J Streetand served as a foreign policy adviser to Elizabeth Warren’s failed 2020 presidential bid. Throughout his professional career,both in and out of government, he has served as a public defender of the Democratic party’s criticisms of Israel, a critic of the GOP’s efforts to strengthen ties with the Jewish state, and a proponent of deepening diplomatic relations with Iran. (So he hates himself because he’s a Jew, and this is going to be the one that get jews to vote for Harris? KEK, good luck with that)

During his tenure as her Middle East adviser, Harris has offered pushback on Biden's public support for Israel and support for pro-Hamas protesters in the United States. She did not, for example, attend Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress late last month, and has extended sympathy to anti-Israel and anti-Semitic campus agitators, telling the Nation in July that "they are showing exactly what the human emotion should be, as a response to Gaza." She rebuked the Jewish state in March for sparking a "humanitarian catastrophe" in Gaza and called for an immediate Israeli ceasefire.

Before joining the Biden administration in 2021, Goldenberg participated in a briefing organized by the anti-Israel group J Street in which he described President Joe Biden’s historically pro-Israel view as "old school" and said the United States must "publicly criticize the Israelis"in order to pressure them to accept a ceasefire.

During Warren’s failed presidential bid, with Goldenberg by her side, the Massachusetts senator urged the Jewish state to end its "occupation" and create "an independent and sovereign Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip living alongside Israel." Warren skipped AIPAC's 2019 conference and pledged to do so again, saying, "For America to be a good ally of Israel and of the Palestinians, we need to encourage both parties to get to the negotiating table. And we're not doing that if we keep standing with one party and saying, ‘We're on your side.’"

Goldenberg was also a vocal critic of the Trump administration’s approach to the region, panning the president’s decision to move the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, which he described as a "bad idea" that should only take place if the United States accompanies it with a "formal recognition of the state of Palestine." "Moving the embassy would upend 50 years of American policy, which has held that the issue of Jerusalem can be negotiated only between Israelis and Palestinians," Goldenberg wrote in a piece for Politico magazine, warning incorrectly that the move "could spark violence targeted at American diplomatic facilities across the Middle East."

He was also critical of the Trump administration’s decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal. Abandoning the accord, he said, would serve as "an invitation to war." Trump's alternative to the deal, he argued, "is a leaky, weak international sanctions regime that will not bring Iran back to the table, but will free it of its nuclear obligations under the deal." And when the Obama administration took a parting shot against Israel shortly before Trump took office, Goldenberg broke with a majority of congressional Democrats and defended the move.

In a January 2017 op-ed for the National Interest, he said the administration's abstention from a U.N. vote condemning Israel’s decision to build homes in the West Bank and East Jerusalem was "necessary and appropriate," adding that his former boss "made the right call" to rebuke Israel on the international stage. Then-U.N. ambassador Samantha Power could have killed the vote with a veto, and her refusal to do so prompted a bipartisan resolution repudiating the Obama administration, which 109 Democrats supported.

Goldenberg subsequently argued in a 2020 policy paper that the U.S. must reverse Israel’s "settlement activity" by "ending the practice of shielding Israel from international consequences."

How the federal government taxes Social Security benefits

Social Security is subject to federal income tax when annual combined income exceeds certain thresholds. "Combined income" for IRS purposes equals the sum of three different figures:

One-half of Social Security benefits.

Adjusted gross income (AGI).

Nontaxable interest.

Single filers will owe taxes on their Social Security if their combined income is $25,000 or more. Married couples filing jointly will owe taxes on their Social Security if their combined income is $32,000 or more.

However, there are two different tax thresholds. People with combined income in the lower threshold will pay taxes on 50% of their benefit, and people with combined income in the upper threshold will pay taxes on 85% of their benefit. The following chart shows the combined income thresholds.

Some people confuse the taxable portion of benefits with the tax bill. They are not the same. If 50% of benefits are taxable, that means 50% of Social Security counts toward taxable income. It doesn't mean 50% of benefits are paid in taxes. What a beneficiary actually pays depends on one's federal tax bracket and the associated tax rate.

Man Impersonating Secret Service Agent Spotted Checking Backpacks at JD Vance Event in Detroit

A man impersonating a Secret Service agent was spotted at a JD Vance event in Detroit, Michigan on August 7.

A man who is not a Secret Service agent was spotted wearing a Secret Service patch on an armored vest issued by another federal agency.

RealClearInvestigations reporter Susan Crabtree presented the photo to the Secret Service and they confirmed the man was improperly wearing a Secret Service patch.

According to Susan Crabtree, the individual in the photo is a Homeland Security Investigations special agent.

“I’ve since discovered that the individual in the photo is a Homeland Security Investigations special agent or officer. They mainly specialize in investigating transnational crime and violations of the customs and immigration laws of the United States. HSI, TSA, and other federal law enforcement agencies have historically and are continuing to assist the Secret Service with tasks such as magnetometer screening and other “non-discretionary” assignments to help ensure the security of presidential, vice presidential candidates granted USSS protection, the agency told me.” she said.

“That said, no external agencies serve in direct protective or organizational capacities for the U.S. Secret Service,” the statement from the Secret Service concluded.

This is a huge security risk – especially after the failures that led to an attempted assassination against President Trump.

“There’s a massive security risk because if all someone has to do is make a fake Secret Service path and throw it on themselves and walk around the site, how are normal Secret Service [agents] supposed to be able to tell who is who?” a source in the Secret Service community said to Susan Crabtree.

Even worse, non-Secret Service agents are not properly trained to inspect bags at entry points at events – AND someone is giving them authority to enter Secret Service-only sites.
