So I called them up naively, very excited, got this thing working, doing this and that. And it was literally three questions. What type of cancers do you think it treats? How long do you think you would have to treat for? Do you think it actually is getting at the, you know at the apoptosis or suicide of the cell itself?

I said, not only do I think, I can show you the data and blah, blah, blah, and click.

It was literally hung up on me. I just thought, why am I dead? Or I lost my mind, call back, no answer, no answer.

Finally, after a few days of no contact, I go to my mentor and explain the situation.

She's like, you should have never called. She's like, that is not a patent, that is there for monetary gain.

That is something called a blocking patent, making sure that this thing doesn't come to light.

Earlier this month, Democratic Texas congressman Henry Cuellar was indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice on charges of “bribery, unlawful foreign influence, and money laundering.” The accusations revolve around a set of deals in which Cuellar allegedly accepted money from a state-owned Azerbaijani oil company and a Mexican bank in exchange for an agreement to push U.S. foreign policy in their favor.

As concerning as this may be, it’s not even the first such indictment against a sitting member of Congress this year. In March, Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) received a superseding indictment which expands further upon earlier accusations that the former Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman took bribes to advocate on behalf of the Egyptian and Qatari governments.

These cases make it clear that foreign bribery, in which representatives of one country pay money to manipulate the representatives of another, is still a serious problem in the United States. As the world’s most powerful and interventionist nation, no other government has more influence over the rest of the world’s affairs — influence which can be bought. The recent charges against Rep. Cuellar and Sen. Mendendez show how significant of a problem bribery and undue influence has been for the U.S. congress, while also drawing attention to the ongoing efforts to prevent this corruption from continuing.

Bribes offered in exchange for political favors are nothing new in Congress. The first congressional bribery investigation on record took place in 1854, when a lobbyist attempted to bribe members of Congress into extending the patent for the Colt revolver handgun. The question of bribery across borders, however, did not receive much attention in Congress until fairly recently.

Concerns about foreign bribery emerged most forcefully in the mid-1970s as a result of the Watergate investigation and the Church Committee, which investigated abuses by U.S. intelligence agencies. These investigations identified slush funds run by large companies that could be used for illegal political donations and undisclosed foreign payments, including several U.S.-based corporations with overseas operations.

In the words of then-committee chairman Sen. Frank Church (D-Ida.), the Church Committee was “concerned with the foreign policy consequences of these payments by U.S.-based multinational corporations… It is no longer sufficient to simply sigh and say that is the way business is done. It is time to treat the issue for what it is: a serious foreign policy problem.”

There are two types of foreign bribery: attempts by foreign figures to bribe U.S. officials, and attempts by U.S. figures to bribe foreign officials. The Church Committee began by looking into the latter, focusing on political contributions that U.S.-based oil and defense companies had made abroad. What they found was shocking: oil companies were funding politicians in South Korea and Italy; Northrop was paying off a Saudi general; and Lockheed spent millions on bribes to foreign officials in Japan, the Netherlands, Indonesia, and more. Lockheed even sought to claim tax deductions for its bribes, a practice which was legal until 1975.

China unveils $41bn lending program to 'digest' unsold properties

China's central bank on Friday said it will set up a new lending program to encourage local governments to "digest" excess housing supply, as the world's second-largest economy grapples with an accelerating decline in home prices. Under the new initiative, the People's Bank of China will provide "refinancing funds" worth 300 billion yuan ($41.5 billion) with low interest rates to 21 banking institutions. The banks can then issue loans to state-owned enterprises selected by city governments, which in turn will purchase completed but unsold commercial homes and convert them into subsidized housing for low- and middle-income citizens.

The PBOC's funds can be used to cover 60% of a loan's principal, up to a total credit size of 500 billion yuan. At a news conference on Friday, PBOC Deputy Gov. Tao Ling described the new scheme as a "government-led, market-oriented operation." City governments are responsible for selecting the state-owned enterprises that buy the homes, and the banks will need to make their own risk assessments when lending to them.

The announcement of the program came after an online meeting organized by the State Council, China's central government. Vice Premier He Lifeng said local governments can purchase "some" commercial housing inventory "at a reasonable price" and turn it into subsidized housing, according to state news agency Xinhua. They can also take back or acquire "idle stock of residential land" to ease the financial burden on developers, he said.

The move marks a significant push by the government to shore up a Chinese property sector that has soured amid a funding crunch at real estate developers, including former top player Country Garden, which is facing a wind-up petition in a Hong Kong court. But the authorities appear to be walking a fine line, as the purchase prices of the homes could end up exerting pressure on the fragile market.

According to the central bank's Tao, the interest rate on the refinancing funds is 1.75% per year, with a one-year term that can be renewed four times. The purchased homes must be within "certain sizes" and must be quickly rented out or sold to designated qualified groups. The state-owned enterprises selected cannot have affiliations with hidden local government debts or be local government financing platforms, Tao said.

Vice Premier He, for his part, also stressed that the country must fight against the "risk of unfinished commercial housing."

Separately, the central bank unveiled a string of policy measures for homebuyers, including scrapping a minimum interest rate on mortgages and easing down payment requirements.

Argentina’s Milei Plans to Meet With Zuckerberg at End of May

Argentine President Javier Milei is planning to meet with Meta Platforms Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other leaders of tech giants in Silicon Valley at the end of May, people with direct knowledge said. The presidential mission to San Francisco will include meetings with representatives of Apple Inc., OpenAI Inc. Alphabet Inc.’s Google, among other companies in the technology industry, the people said. Argentina’s Ambassador to the US Gerardo Werthein will participate in the mission.

A Meta spokesperson declined to comment.

The trip comes after Silicon Valley investor Peter Thiel met with Milei in Buenos Aires earlier this month. Milei has also had two meetings with Tesla Inc. CEO Elon Musk, including at the Milken Institute’s conference in Los Angeles recently. The libertarian has won international praise from the likes of billionaire Stanley Druckenmiller for his austerity campaign.

The council of the president’s economic advisors, led by Demian Reidel, is coordinating the final details to push and define the agenda, which will seek investments to turn Argentina into an artificial intelligence hub.

Japan’s estimated population of children under the age of 15 was 14.0 million as of April 1, 2024, according to annual data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, released on the May 5 Children’s Day holiday. This was 330,000 fewer than the previous year and marked the forty-third straight year since 1982 that the number has fallen. .It is also the lowest on record since comparable statistics were first compiled in 1950.There were 7.2 million boys and 6.8 million girls. Children under 15 represent 11.3% of the total population, down 0.2 percentage points from the previous year, in the forty-ninth consecutive annual decline since 1975. Meanwhile, the population of those 65 or older numbers 36.3 million or 29.2% of the overall population. At around 2.6 times greater than the number of children, it demonstrates a significant demographic imbalance.

By prefecture, Okinawa had the highest percentage of children at 16.1%, followed by Shiga (13.0%), and Saga (12.9%). The lowest percentage was in Akita (9.1%), ahead of Aomori (10.0%) and Hokkaidō (10.1%). As a general tendency, percentages were higher in the west and lower in the east.

According to the United Nations Demographic Yearbook, Japan has the second lowest percentage of children among the 37 countries in the world whose populations are 40 million or greater. South Korea has the lowest percentage with 11.2%, followed by Japan (11.3%), Italy (12.2%), and Spain (13.5%).

Rudy Giuliani’s 80th birthday bash in Palm Beach was stormed “like it was Normandy” as the former New York City mayor was served with notice of his Arizona indictment, sources told The Post.

In front of nearly 75 guests, two officials with Arizona’s attorney general’s office arrived at the shindig around 11 p.m. to hand Giuliani the papers in the case alleging he and 17 others were involved in a plot to overturn the 2020 election, the sources said.

Some partygoers started screaming and one woman even cried as Giuliani was served.

“While crime in Arizona is at an all-time high the Arizona Secretary of State’s office felt it was a good use of resourcesto send multiple agents across the country to storm an 80th birthday party like it was Normandy,” said Caroline Wren, a top GOP consultant, who hosted the birthday party at her home.

Giuliani’s political advisor Ted Goodman echoed a similar sentiment.

“It’s unfortunate that they chose to barge up and startle guests during a celebration of this man’s 80th birthday,” Goodman told The Post.

“They could’ve shown a little more respect for the man who comforted the nationfollowing September 11th and who stands up for law enforcement and the men and women in blue.”

Giuliani was the last of the 18 defendants in the case to be served in the indictment that was returned by a grand jury last month, Arizona officials said.

Arizona prosecutors had been looking for Giuliani for the last few weeks, but up until Friday night had failed to find him, CNN reported earlier this week.

At the height of the Palm Beach soirée, as many as 200 people, including Roger Stone and Steve Bannon, were in attendance.

Giuliani recorded an hour-long episode of “America’s Mayor Live” on his YouTube channel during the gathering, chatting with guests including Stone and Bannon.

While the sun was still shining, the ex-mayor – donning shades and dress pants with a blue button-down and orange tie – belted out Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” over the microphone in the backyard of the Florida home.

He was all smiles around 10 p.m. as cake was served, posing for photos in a room full of birthday balloons.

But about an hour later the celebratory atmosphere shifted.

After he was served, Giuliani got in his car and left, sources said. The Post has reached out to him for comment.

Charges against those indicted in the so-called “fake electors” plot include fraud, forgery, and conspiracy.

Donald Trump’s former chief of staff Mark Meadows and former Arizona GOP Chairwoman Kelli Ward were among the 18 indicted.

“In Arizona, and the United States, the people elected Joseph Biden as President on November 3, 2020,” the indictment says. “Unwilling to accept this fact, Defendants and unindicted coconspirators schemed to prevent the lawful transfer of the presidency to keep Unindicted Coconspirator 1 in office against the will of Arizona’s voters.”

Former first son Barron Trump loomed over officials at his South Florida high school Friday morning, as the 6-foot-7 teen picked up his diploma while his parents looked on from the bleachers.

The 45th president was permitted to attend the ceremony by Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Juan Merchan, who called off the day’s planned proceedings in the “hush money” trial of the onetime commander-in-chief.

Later Friday, Trump was scheduled to fly to Minnesota, where he will be the headline speaker at the state GOP’s Lincoln-Reagan dinner.

Little is known about the details of Barron’s time at Oxbridge Academy, which charges $41,500 per year for tuition, and where he had spent the previous three years of his education.

Barron previously attended Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School in New York City and transferred to St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac, Md., during his father’s term of office.

The youngest Trump has largely been kept out of the spotlight during his youth, dividing his time between New York and Florida while never speaking publicly.

Melania Trump — who opted for a blue suit jacket, white skirt and straw hat — has taken a central role in raising Barron and famously likes to keep him close to her.

Last week, the former first lady shot down the prospect of Barron being a Florida delegate to the Republican National Convention to help formally nominate his father, saying the 18-year-old had “prior commitments.”

The high school graduate has not yet announced where he will attend college, and the former president recently said his son’s college options had been upended by recent anti-Israel protests and other unrest on campuses.

“He’s a good guy. He’s a senior now in high school, and he’ll be going to college. And you know, a lot of, a lot of these choices of colleges are changing because you see what’s going on in the last month,” Trump told “Kayal and Company” on Philadelphia’s Talk Radio 1210 WPHT.

The former president also revealed Barron has an affinity for politics and sometimes likes to advise his dad.

“He’s a little on the tall side. I will tell you, he’s a tall one, but he is a good-looking guy. And he’s really been a great student. And he does like politics. It’s sort of funny,” Trump said.

“He’ll tell me sometimes, ‘Dad, this is what you have to do.'”

Zelensky details Ukraine’s weapons demands

Kiev needs up to 130 modern aircraft from its foreign backers, the country’s president has said (cost $1 billion for one F16)

Ukraine requires more air defense systems and warplanes from its Western backers in order to achieve parity with Russia, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has said.

Moscow has the upper hand in the battle for the skies, Zelensky acknowledged during an interview with AFP on Friday.

"I believe that today,we have about 25%of what we need to defend Ukraine. I’m talking about air defense,” he said.

As for warplanes,Kiev should be provided with between 120 to 130 modern aircraft, “so that Russia does not have air superiority,” the Ukrainian leader stated.

"In total, we need this fleet of F-16s in the number I am talking about, in order to have parity,” he added.

During his visit to Kiev earlier this week, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Washington is “intensely focused” on finding and delivering Patriots and other air defense systems to Ukraine. Zelensky told Blinken that his military needed two Patriot batteries to protect the Kharkov Region alone, where Russian forces have been advancing in recent weeks.

In late March, then-Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said thatat least five Patriots operated by Ukraine had been destroyedsince the start of the year. Last month, Germany promised to provide Kiev with one more of the US-made air defense systems.

Earlier this week, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that theF-16s will arrive in Ukraine within the “next few months,”retracting her earlier claim that the planes will be there “within the next month.” Denmark and the Netherlands jointly promised to supply Kiev with 61 US-designed fourth generation jets in August 2023.

Reports in Western media in recent months explaineddelays in deliveries of the planes were due to complications in the training of Kiev’s pilotsand thelack of proper airfieldsthat would be able to host the F-16s in Ukraine.

Russia has warned repeatedly that foreign weapons being sent to Kiev will not prevent Moscow from achieving its military goals, and will merely prolong the fighting and increases the risk of a direct confrontation between Russia and NATO.

According to officials in Moscow, the provision of arms, intelligence sharing, and the training of Ukrainian troops mean that Western nations have already become de-facto parties to the conflict.

Ukraine asks US to help locate targets in Russia – media

Ukrainian lawmakers are also pushing for the use of US weapons in cross-border strikes, the New York Times said

Kiev has urged Washington to provide intelligence on targets on Russian soil, as the Ukrainian Armed Forces lose ground on the battlefield, the New York Times and Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, saying US administration officials have begun “to review”the request.

In addition, members of Ukraine's parliament have approached lawmakers in Washington,requesting the green light to use US-provided weapons in strikes on Russia, the paper wrote, citing US and Ukrainian officials.

The Russian offensive in Kharkov Region was facilitated by the US restrictions, which are “handcuffing the Ukrainian war effort,” Kiev’s delegation told Congress, according to news website Politico.

Despite such requests being turned down in the past, administration officials are now reviewing the latest requests, the NYT wrote.

Intelligence from the US and other allies on military targets on Russian soil would allow Ukraine to better plot approach routes for its drones and missiles, the newspaper said. With detailed terrain mapping, it would allow them to fly low and avoid radar detection, increasing their effectiveness. While Kiev already has access to commercial satellite imaging data, US intelligence would provide more detailed and timely information, they wrote.

General Charles Q. Brown Jr.,chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, confirmed that Kiev has been seeking to ramp up strikes inside Russia. TheUkrainians have been “asking us for help to be able to strike into Russia,” the US general told reporters on Thursday, while flying to Brussels for NATO meetings.

The day before, State Secretary Antony Blinken stated that the US has left it up to Ukraine whether or not it uses US-supplied armaments to attack Russian territories.“We have not encouraged or enabled strikes outside of Ukraine, butultimately Ukraine has to make decisions for itself about how it’s going to conduct this war,” he told reporters in Kiev.

In early May, British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said Kiev had the right to use UK-provided weaponry to for cross-border strikes on Russian targets. Moscow condemned the remarks and summoned London’s ambassador. Any use of British weapons against Russian territory could prompt Moscow to strike “any British military facilities and equipment on the territory of Ukraine and beyond,” the Russian Foreign Ministry warned.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed on Friday that it is Kiev’s repeated strikes against residential districts in Russia that is forcing Moscow into creating a buffer zone on the border, as Russian forces push Ukrainian troops further back into Kharkov Region.

Russia’s ability to strike Ukraine from its own soil is giving Moscow the edge in the conflict, Vladimir Zelensky said during an interview with AFP news agency on Friday.

"They can fire any weapons from their territory at ours. This is the biggest advantage that Russia has. We can’t do anything to their systems, which are located on the territory of Russia, with Western weapons,” he explained.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who visited Kiev earlier this week, said Washington has “not encouraged or enabled strikes outside of Ukraine, but ultimately Ukraine has to make decisions for itself about how it’s going to conduct this war.”

However, on Thursday Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh clarified that Washington’s position thatKiev should not target Russia with US-supplied weapons remains unchanged. Such arms can only be used to “take back Ukrainian sovereign territory,” Singh stressed.

Earlier this month, UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron insisted Ukraine has the “right” to use UK-supplied weapons to strike targets deep inside Russia, if it decides to do so. Moscow reacted to the statement by warning that if such an attack were to take place it could target British military facilities “on the territory of Ukraine and beyond” in response.

The New York Times and Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that Kiev has urged Washington to provide intelligence on targets on Russian soil amid setbacks in Donbass and Kharkov Region. According to the NYT, US officials are currently reviewing those requests, despite previously turning them down.

Zelensky said Kiev now finds itself in a “nonsensical situation” due to the stance of the West, which “is afraid that Russia will lose the war. And it does not want Ukraine to lose it.”

“Ukraine’s final victory will lead to Russia’s defeat. And the final victory of Russia will lead to Ukraine’s defeat,” he added.

The Ukrainian authorities “want the war to end with a fair peace for us. Of course, the West wants the war to end. Period. As soon as possible. And, for them, this is a fair peace,”the president stated.

On Friday, Russia President Vladimir Putin reiterated that Moscow “never rejected negotiations unlike the Ukrainian side,”referring to a 2022 decree by Zelensky, which officially forbade him from talks with his Russian counterpart.

However, Putin stressed that =•Russia will not yield to “ultimatums” from Kiev and its Western backers== as they try to gain though diplomacy what they have failed to gain on the battlefield.

Dozens of Morehouse College staff have voted against giving President Joe Biden an honorary doctorate amid protests at universities around the country over his handling of the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Some 38 faculty members voted against giving the president an honorary doctorate, while about a dozen abstained from the vote ahead of his visit to the Atlanta-based private university on Sunday.

The decision to host President Biden was first made in September before Morehouse College announced plans last month for Biden to serve as commencement speaker for the university's graduation ceremony and to receive an honorary degree from the historically Black college in the key swing state of Georgia, which Biden flipped from then-President Donald Trump four years ago.

News of his visit prompted protests from some students, faculty, and alumni, with Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine-Georgia releasing a statement condemning the president for his response to the war in Gaza.

"More than 34,000 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children," the statement said. "More than 77,000 have been injured. Every hospital and university in Gaza has been destroyed. None of this would have been possible without the support and sponsorship of the Biden Administration. Any college or university that gives its commencement stage to President Biden in this moment is endorsing genocide."

Morehouse alumni Edward Ahmed Mitchell, who is the national deputy director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, called on the college to rescind the invitation.

In the mostly Russian regions of eastern Ukraine, a violent war ensued between the Kiev government and separatists.By the end of 2021, it had taken over 15,000 lives. Commanders from openly neo-Nazi and fascist groups like the Azov Battalion were integrated to become brigades of the official Ukrainian Armed Forces and given free rein in the Donbass.

So, by the time that Russian PresidentVladimir Putin ordered his military to invade Ukraine in February 2022, war had already been raging for yearsin eastern Ukraine. Chances for peace—both before and after the invasion—were repeatedly scuttled, often at the insistence of Kiev’s allies in Washington.

The Odessa trade union massacre was one of the earliest of many atrocities committed in the war in Ukraine.The Right Sector militia celebrated the mass murder that happened that day, calling it “yet another bright page in our fatherland’s history.” None of the perpetrators were ever brought to justice, and some of the massacre’s coordinatorseven ended up as members of parliament.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A legislator in South Carolina has had his law license suspended after a former client accused him of forging his signature to reach a settlement in a lawsuit without his permission.

Democratic Rep. Marvin Pendarvis cannot practice law until the state Supreme Court lifts the suspension, justices said Friday in a written order.

The order didn't detail why the Office of Disciplinary Counsel recommended the suspension. Pendarvis has not responded publicly to the lawsuit against him by former client Adrian Lewis. A call to his law office number went unanswered Friday.

Lewis has hired a different lawyer who held a news conference detailing the malpractice allegations against Pendarvis after filing a lawsuit last month.

Lewis sued the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office over his arrest in 2021. Pendarvis told him his case was worth up to $325,000 but then settled it for $10,000 without Lewis knowing, the new lawyer said.

According to the lawsuit, Pendarvis ignored Lewis' questions for weeks. Then once Lewis learned of the settlement, Pendarvis offered him $75,000 cash out of his trust fund for clients when Lewis threatened to sue.

Pendarvis then sent Lewis several text messages asking him not to sue.

“Let’s handle this (expletive). No need to try and hurt me man. I can help you," Pendarvis wrote Lewis in text messages filed with the lawsuit.

Pendarvis is running for a fifth term in the House from his North Charleston district. He has no competition either in June's Democratic primary or the November general election.
