SHOCK VIDEO: Gunfire erupts near youth baseball game in Auburn

DETAILS: Around 8:15 PM last night, the Auburn Police Department responded to reports of multiple shots fired near Isaac Evans Park.

Early investigation indicates that two groups were involved in a dispute, leading to at least one person opening fire. Following the incident, the groups fled the scene in separate vehicles. One of the vehicles crashed shortly after leaving the area, and the suspects abandoned it, fleeing on foot. A K9 track was conducted but was unsuccessful in locating the suspects.

Two individuals were injured during the shooting. A female victim was found near the scene, while another female victim later arrived at a local hospital. Both victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The Auburn Police Department is actively investigating this incident.

China banks move to halt sales of large time deposits

Chinese commercial banks increasingly are suspending sales of large time deposits as they look to reduce costs amid a tougher business environment. China Minsheng Bank, a private-sector lender, halted new sales of large-denomination certificates of deposit (CDs) early this month, local media report. These fixed-income savings accounts are held for six months or more and require a minimum deposit of 200,000 yuan ($27,695).

CDs are a key source of funds for banks, with companies among the clients. But interest paid out from these products exceeds that for regular savings accounts, prompting some banks to revise sales strategies. China Merchants Bank, China CITIC Bank and Hengfeng Bank have stopped accepting new business for portions of large CDs.

China's banks are struggling to increase issuance of new loans. Both businesses and households face deep uncertainties in their economic prospects.In April, the amount of long-term financing for capital spending and home purchases plummeted by 56% from a year earlier.

Margins at banks have been shrinking steadily. The margin for all Chinese commercial banks stood at 1.69% as of December, the National Financial Regulatory Administration reports, the lowest figure on record. A self-regulatory body for the banking industry cites a margin of 1.8% as a warning line for maintaining a bank's financial health. The top four banks in China all reported margins below that threshold for 2023. The People's Bank of China, the country's central bank, kept loan prime rates unchanged on Monday. The one-year rate, used as a reference for lending to top companies, stayed at 3.45%. The five-year rate, which informs the pricing of mortgages, remained at 3.95%. The central bank action appears to take the banking sector's situation into consideration. An interest rate cut would stimulate demand for financing, but also would put downward pressure on margins across the board. Lower earnings would create more obstacles for liquidating nonperforming loans. The government announced additional measures Friday to prop up China's real estate market. Municipalities will make use of bank financing to buy unsold homes and convert them into subsidized housing. There are concerns whether the scheme will translate to earnings the municipalities can use to pay down debt.

Maybe We're Closer To "You'll Own Nothing" Than We Realize

Maybe we should rephrase the slogan to "you'll appear to own things you don't actually control and be happy."

The World Economic Forum's catchphrase you'll own nothing and be happy was widely mocked as an eyebrow-raising vision of a "sharing economy" future without the implicit agency granted by full ownership. Renting stuff that one needed only for one-time use has long been a market, and car-sharing makes sense for urban dwellers who only need a vehicle on occasion.

But to own nothing still implies powerlessness and poverty, not happiness, which continues to be associated with owning income streams and nice things, i.e. wealth.

Given our dependence on software / digital rights and the phantom wealth of credit-asset bubbles,"how much do we actually own?" is a fair question. Consider the recent New York Times article Why Tech Companies Are Not Your Friends: Lessons From Roku, which was reprinted in other publications with the more accurate title Our Gadgets Are Not Ours.

The gist of the article is that since we don't own control of the software, our "ownership" of the device is illusory. Here is an excerpt:

More than a decade ago, when we bought a TV it was just that-a big screen that let you plug into it whatever you wanted. Nowadays, the vast majority of TVs connect to the internet and run the manufacturer's operating system and apps. Even though you bought the TV, the software component, a major part of what makes the product work, remains controlled by the company.

Changes to the product's software interface and data collection practices can happen at any moment. In extreme examples, a device can stop working. In 2020, for instance, Amazon deactivated the Echo Look, a camera that helped people organize their wardrobes. It issued a promotional credit for owners to buy a different Amazon gadget that lacked similar features.

The less extreme, more common situation is when companies stop supporting older products because they need to sell new gadgets. Apple's original Apple Watch from 2015, for example, no longer gets software updates and now barely works.

This issue is not new but has grown more problematic as more of our devices rely on apps and internet connections, said Nathan Proctor, a director for the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, a consumer advocacy organization. With computers, consumers could modify their machines by installing a different operating system. But with many other types of electronics with locked-down software systems, from streaming devices to e-book readers, those modifications are typically not possible.

"When you get to the core of it, do you even own it anymore?" he said.

The intricate legal issues and colorful characters in Donald Trump's criminal trials will undoubtedly keep the media and the viewing public enraptured for months to come. But when it comes to the 2024 election, all that really matters is how the defendant appears to a narrow sliver of undecided voters.

CHICAGO – As the first criminal case against Donald Trump gets underway in New York City, the media have forgone their customary practice of declaring the “trial of the century.” Trial of the month is more like it, since three more are set to follow. The sheer number of criminal trials involving different allegations – hush money payments, retention of confidential documents, and election interference – would seem to guarantee a conviction and Trump’s final ejection from public life.

A conviction is indeed possible, even likely. But neither a conviction nor even jail time would disqualify Trump from running for the presidency. The important question is what impact a conviction might have on voters’ choices on election day. Given that most people have already made up their minds about Trump, we are talking about a small, obscure group of undecided voters in a handful of swing states. And given that most of continued

these people seem to have little interest in, or knowledge of, politics, they likely know very little about the accusations against Trump. The media deluge from the trials may finally end their ignorance.

The trial in New York is about business records, not insurrections or national security. The indictment accuses Trump of violating a New York statute under which a person who, with fraudulent intent, “makes or causes a false entry in the business records of an enterprise” is guilty of a felony if he intended to conceal or commit another crime.

The “other crime” is not clearly identified in the indictment, but the focus of the trial is likely to be a federal campaign-finance violation (or possibly a violation of New York election law). Trump’s then-lawyer, Michael Cohen, paid hush money to the adult-film actress Stormy Daniels, who had threatened to disclose to a tabloid a sexual encounter with Trump. Paying money to someone to help a campaign is a campaign expenditure, and Cohen admitted to violating the law both by making a payment in excess of legal limits and failing to report it. Trump is accused of orchestrating this scheme, though he has not been indicted for the alleged campaign-finance violations.

The legal issues and the facts of the case are weirdly intricate. The US government did investigate Trump for violating federal campaign-finance law, but government lawyers probably feared that a jury would find that he concealed the hush-money payoff because it was personally embarrassing, not because it helped his campaign. That is what happened when the government prosecuted but failed to convict John Edwards in connection with the coverup of an extramarital affair during his 2008 Democratic presidential primary campaign.

Alvin Bragg, the New York district attorney, is not required to prove that Trump violated the campaign-finance law, only that he intended to do so. The federal government’s failure to indict Trump for campaign-finance violations suggests that Bragg may need to prove to a jury that Trump intended to commit a crime that the jury won’t think he actually committed. In making the journey into Trump’s brain to discover what exactly the man was thinking eight years ago, Bragg’s Virgil will be Cohen, an ex-con and admitted perjurer. Daniels will also testify.

You might think that this circus of seedy characters and events would end Trump’s electoral chances for good, just as Edwards’s dalliance destroyed his political career. But that would be a mistake, one that has been made a thousand times before. For Trump’s supporters, every new disclosure about his shocking behavior and repulsive character merely confirms the malevolence of the disclosers. In their view, Bragg’s prosecution of Trump for a business-records violation is actually an attempt to derail Trump’s campaign for the presidency by distracting him and exposing him to public embarrassment.

Exhibit A for this theory may be that Bragg has styled his business-records case as an election interference case rather than as a minor financial peccadillo. Bragg argues that Trump is a threat to New York’s reputation for business probity and to US democracy, bridging this yawning gulf by pointing out that the false business records concealed a campaign-finance violation that would have persuaded people to vote against Trump back in 2016 if they had learned of it. Hence, minor financial fraud is transmuted into major election interference. But the logic assumes that a substantial number of voters would not have supported Trump if they had known about the Daniels affair – an unknowable and perhaps implausible proposition. It also stumbles on the inconvenient fact that the business-records falsification occurred after the election, not before it. Trump may have attempted to interfere with the election by depriving voters of information about (parts of) his scandalous past, but it is not clear that it affected the outcome.

So, how much will this trial matter? It won’t change Trump voters’ support and may be too confusing to influence those independent voters who have not been paying attention to electoral politics. Maybe all that matters is the symbolism of the thing. If Trump is thrown in jail, he will surely present himself as a political prisoner in the mold of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn or Alexei Navalny. But the image of Trump being led off in handcuffs, or the (mental) image of him being strip-searched upon his reception into jail, will probably have more impact on people than anything that is revealed at the trial. Are Americans ready to elect a jailbird?

Well, that possibility cannot be ruled out.

Kiev is run by a lawless and criminal regime, the former Russian president has said

Vladimir Zelensky’s decision not to hold elections means the Kiev government has no legitimacy even on paper, according to Dmitry Medvedev, the head of Russia’s Security Council.

Zelensky’s five-year mandate expired on Tuesday but he has argued that the Ukrainian constitution does not allow him to call new presidential or parliamentary elections during martial law, which he declared in February 2022.

“All these manipulations with laws mean only one thing – the death of the failed state of Ukraine, its transformation into a classic failed state, to use American vocabulary,” Medvedev told TASS on Monday.

TheUS and its allieshavesupported Zelensky’s efforts to stay in powerbecause they feared “the shameful fall of his criminal regime,” Medvedev added.

“That’s why there is such a high probability that Zelensky would have lost this election miserably, and the citizens of his non-existent country would have wanted a new president in the hope that he would start peace negotiations with Russia,” said the former Russian president and prime minister.

Medvedev reminded reporters thatZelensky, “a political upstart,” won in 2019precisely because he campaigned “on the rhetoric of peace.” However, theWestern sponsorsof the regime in Kievcould not allow peacebecause “they make good money from the bloody bacchanalia,” he added.

The US and its allies have sought to portray the sending of weapons and ammunition to Kiev as an “investment” into their military-industrial complex worth hundreds of billions of dollars, and openly said most of that money would never reach Ukraine.

Medvedev dismissed the notion that anything substantial will change in Ukraine after May 21, however.Ukrainians “didn’t live in a rule-of-law state anyway,” he said, arguing that “law and justice were forgotten ten years ago,” with the US-backed coup in Kiev and the start of the Donbass conflict.

As for Zelensky, Medvedev said, he can either be captured and put on trial, or meet the same fate as his “spiritual teacher,” Stepan Bandera. The leader of Ukrainian nationalists, who sought to collaborate with Nazi Germany during WWII, was assassinated by Soviet operatives in Munich in 1959.

Biden says maimed American Hersh Goldberg-Polin is ‘here with us today’ at Rose Garden party — despite still being held by Hamas

WASHINGTON — President Biden was forced to correct himself afteryet another brutal gaffeMonday evening, when he told attendees at a White House Jewish heritage celebration that maimed US citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin was “here with us today” — when in fact he remains a hostage in the Gaza Strip.

“My administration is working around the clock to free the remaining hostages, just as we have freed hostages already. =•And here with us today is Hersh Goldberg-Polin,”== Biden, 81, announced at the Rose Garden party.

A moment later, the president added, “He is not here with us. But he is still being held by Hamas.”

Goldberg-Polin, a dual Israeli citizen, is among the five known Americans still held by Hamas terrorists after being kidnapped from southern Israel on Oct. 7.

The 23-year-old abductee had one of his hands amputated following his abduction as a result of injuries suffered during the attacks that killed about 1,200 people, including at least 33 Americans.

He was featured last month in a Hamas propaganda video.

Other US citizens still believed to be held by Hamas include Tenafly, NJ, native Edan Alexander, 20, and former New York City resident Omer Neutra, 22, both of whom were serving in the Israeli military at the time of the surprise attack.

Father of three Sagui Dekel-Chen, 35, who moved from Connecticut to Israel as a child, and Keith Siegel, 65, who moved to Israel in 1980, also remain missing after being kidnapped near the Gaza border.

It is unknown how many of the American hostages remain alive.

The Rose Garden event was attended by both first son Hunter Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garlanddays before the younger Biden faces a pair of June trials for alleged tax fraud and gun crimes — even though their prior joint attendance at a state dinner last year drew negative scrutiny.

Biden hosted the outdoor event, which featured a couple hundred guests and drink stations on the side of the iconic garden, hours after International Criminal Court chief prosecutor Karim Khan officially sought an arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for alleged war crimes.

Biden slammed the action,but mistakenly referred to the ICC as the “International Court of Justice,” a different institution also based in the The Hague, Netherlands.

“Let me be clear: We reject the ICC’s application for arrest warrants against Israeli leaders,” Biden said.

The president added, “Contrary to allegations against Israel made by the International Court of Justice, what’s happening is not genocide – we reject that. And we’ll always stand with Israel.”

Zelensky a ‘legitimate military target’ – Medvedev

The Ukrainian leader, whose term in office expires this week, has been deemed a “war criminal” by Russia, former President Dmitry Medvedev has said

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, as the leader of a “hostile political regime,” is a legitimate military target, Dmitry Medvedev, the head of Russia’s Security Council, has said.

Speaking to TASS on Monday, Medvedev said that the question of Zelensky’s legitimacy as president is of no particular importance to Moscow.

“For Russia, thefinal loss of legitimacy by the pseudo-president of the former Ukraine will not change anything,” the former Russian president said, noting that the leaders of countries waging war are “always considered”a legitimate military target.

Medvedev called Zelensky a “war criminal,”who should be caught and brought to justiceor “liquidated as a terrorist” for his crimes against Russians and Ukrainians.

Zelensky appeared on the Russian Interior Ministry’s wanted list earlier this month though no data has been released about criminal proceedings against him.

The constitutional powers of the current Ukrainian president expired on May 20. A presidential election was originally scheduled for March, but was postponed under the pretext of martial law, which was imposed after the start of the conflict with Russia in February 2022, and has repeatedly been extended by the nation’s legislature.

Zelensky announced in December 2023 that no presidential or parliamentary elections would be held as long as martial law remains in force. In early May, lawmakers prolonged martial law by another three months.

According to Medvedev,Zelensky “effectively seized power” in the country after elections were annulled.

“He spat on the constitution of his ‘country,’ ignored the Constitutional Court, anddid not even extend, but usurped the supreme power,”Medvedev argued, adding that Zelensky “covered himself with an inarticulate declaration of the Verkhovna Rada (the Ukrainian parliament) on the abolition of presidential elections in times of war.”

In March, Ukrainskaya Pravda claimed, citing members of parliament, thatZelensky had virtually stripped the legislature of its powersand established de facto personal rule.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said recently that a “moment will come soon when many people, including those inside Ukraine, will question [President Zelensky’s] legitimacy.”
