A top Australian university has revealed it has detected a cyber breach on its IT network affecting thousands of people.

A major Sydney university has fallen victim to a cyber breach in its IT network, potentially exposing the personal information of thousands of people.

Approximately 7,500 students at Western Sydney University were contacted on Tuesday after the university detected “unauthorised access” on its IT network.

The university said in a statement the “intrusion” was first identified in January, with steps being taken to minimise disruption.

“Since January 2024, the University undertook its due diligence to understand the nature, scope and scale of the incident, the number of individuals impacted, and to protect against further harm. This was also done in accordance with the University’s legal obligations,” it said.

“Monitoring and scanning indicates that the preventative measures taken as a part of the incident response have successfully prevented any further unauthorised access.”

The university’s Microsoft Office 365 system was breached as early as May last year, which included access to some email accounts and SharePoint files.

“Investigations also indicate that the University’s Solar Car Laboratory infrastructure may have been used as part of the incident,” the statement continued.

It is not clear what kind of personal details have been exposed.

NY v Trump: Judge to consider defense motion to dismiss after prosecution rests case

Defense says they won't call any more witnesses; closing arguments are scheduled for next Tuesday

Judge Juan Merchan could rule Tuesday morning on Trump defense attorneys’ motion to dismiss the case against the former president altogether after the prosecution rested its case following days of testimony from its star witness, Michael Cohen.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg charged Trump with 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree. Prosecutors must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Trump falsified business records 34 times to conceal a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels, a pornographic performer, in the lead-up to the 2016 election to silence her about an alleged affair with Trump in 2006.

Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges and maintains his innocence.

After Michael Cohen’s fourth day of testimony was complete, the prosecution rested its case, and Trump defense attorneys called two of their own witnesses.

At the end of court for the day, Trump defense attorney Todd Blanche asked for an immediate order of dismissal, saying there is "no evidence" that the filings or business records at the center of the case were false, that there are "absolutely no false business filings."

Blanche said there is no dispute that Cohen acted as a personal attorney for Trump in 2017 and that there is no evidence or intent by Trump to mislead, hide or falsify business records.

Blanche said there would be records of intent to defraud, if they existed, and that there were no other crimes being covered up. He said there was no evidence of anyone thinking of a campaign finance charge when the payment was made to Stormy Daniels or when Cohen and then-Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg developed the repayment plan.

Blanche said Trump paid Cohen a $35,000 "monthly retainer," which is what the records state, and said there is no evidence from any witness to prove any criminal intent.

Reflecting on the prosecution’s case, Blanche pointed to the alleged "catch and kill" strategy used to prevent a "demonstrably false" story a Trump Tower doorman had about Trump from being published.

"How on Earth is keeping a false story from voters criminal?" Blanche asked, adding it was "not a catch and kill and certainly not a criminal catch and kill."

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee, who is the judge in the Trump case, is also up for re-election and is facing a challenge from attorney and radio host Robert Patillo in a nonpartisan race.

With no gubernatorial or Senate races on the ballot this year in Georgia, the state's 14 congressional districts will take top billing.

Controversial Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a high-profile Trump ally, is running unopposed in the GOP primary in Georgia's 14th Congressional District, in the state's heavily conservative northwestern corner.

Two separate government websites reveal billions in COVID-19-related government contracts were awarded to the nation’s two largest pharmacy companies: CVS and Walgreens.25 Some of these government contracts appear to be ongoing today.

According to one U.S. government website, in June of 2022, CVS was the recipient of a government contract award with a potential worth of over $2.1 billion.26 Transaction descriptions on the website show some of the money paid to CVS was for ICATT 27 – a CDC program providing COVID-19 testing and vaccine services.28 As the CDC’s website notes, “ICATT pharmacy sites provide vaccine services, while a subset of ICATT pharmacy sites provide both testing and vaccine services.”29

The $2.1 billion contract award CVS received in June of 2022 might help to explain why CVS ran a propaganda piece just a few months later, featuring then-CDC Director Rochelle Walensky visiting a CVS to receive her COVID-19 bivalent booster.30

If $2.1 billion in potential government contract money is not shocking enough, a different government website shows a similar federal contract with CVS, this one having a potential worth of $3.4 billion through 2025.31

Walgreens has also been on the government take. Two separate government spending websites show over $800 million in federal contract award money was awarded to Walgreen Co. in 2021

One of these government websites also shows federal government awards to Walgreen Co. topped $1 billion in 2022.34 This might help explain why Walgreens ran propaganda pieces pushing COVID-19 shots in kids at its pharmacies,35 and shamelessly showcased then-NIAID director Anthony Fauci receiving his COVID-19 booster at a Walgreens in October of that same year.36 Both of these Walgreens propaganda pieces were attributed to Walgreens’ affiliate, Walgreens Boots Alliance,37 which claims a presence in eight countries through its various consumer brands and disturbingly also “has a portfolio of healthcare-focused investments located in several countries, including China and the U.S.”38

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Mourners in black began gathering Tuesday for days of funerals and processions for Iran’s late president, foreign minister and others killed in a helicopter crash, a government-led series of ceremonies aimed at both honoring the dead and projecting strength in an unsettled Middle East.

For Iran’s Shiite theocracy, mass demonstrations have been crucial since millions thronged the streets of Tehran to welcome Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1979 during the Islamic Revolution, and also attended his funeral 10 years later. An estimated 1 million turned out in 2020 for processions for the late Revolutionary Guard Gen. Qassem Soleimani, who was slain in a U.S. drone strike in Baghdad.

Whether President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and others draw the same crowd remains in question, particularly as Raisi died in a helicopter crash, won his office in the lowest-turnout presidential election in the country’s history and presided over sweeping crackdowns on all dissent. Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller, citing a string of data showing that inflation appears to be easing, said Tuesday that he does not think further interest rate increases will be necessary. However, the policymaker added he will need some convincing before he backs cuts anytime soon. Central bankers should never say never, but the data suggests that inflation isn’t accelerating, and I believe that further increases in the policy rate are probably unnecessary,” said Waller, who has been generally hawkish in his recent views, meaning he supports tighter monetary policy.

The comments came in prepared remarks for an appearance before the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington.

Waller pointed to a string of recent data, from flattening retail sales to cooling in both the manufacturing and services sectors, to suggest the Fed’s higher rates have helped ease some of the demand that had contributed to the highest inflation rates in more than 40 years.

Though payroll gains have been solid, internal metrics such as the rate at which workers are leaving their jobs show that the ultra-tight labor market that had driven up wages last a level consistent with the Fed’s 2% inflation goal has displayed signs of loosening, he added.

Yet Waller said he’s not ready to back interest rate cuts. As a governor, Waller is a permanent voting member of the rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee.

“The economy now seems to be evolving closer to what the Committee expected,” he said. “Nevertheless, in the absence of a significant weakening in the labor market, I need to see several more months of good inflation data before I would be comfortable supporting an easing in the stance of monetary policy.”

April’s consumer price index showed inflation running at a 3.4% rate from a year ago, down slightly from March, with the 0.3% monthly increase slightly below what Wall Street economists had been expecting. The Labor Department report was “a welcome relief,” Waller said, though the “the progress was so modest that it did not change my view that I will need to see more evidence of moderating inflation before supporting any easing of monetary policy.” He gave the report a C-plus grade. Markets have had to recalibrate their expectations for monetary policy this year. In the early months, futures markets traders priced in at least six rate cuts this year starting in March. However, a string of higher-than-expected inflation data changed that outlook to where the first cut is not expected to happen until September at the earliest — with at most two reductions of a quarter percentage point before the end of the year, according to the CME Group’s FedWatch Tool.

The Ukrainian president allegedly believes that he is being kept in the dark about the situation at the front

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky believes his generals are hiding the truth from him and has taken to shouting at them, The Economist has claimed, citing a government source.

Purported fits of presidential rage were mentioned in a Monday report on the situation in Kharkov Region, where Russian forces have gained significant ground over the last month. According to the British newsweekly, Ukrainian troops deployed there are angry at the development and have competing theories about the causes.

Some blame the US and its allies for insufficient and untimely aid, not unlike Zelensky himself, while others“suspect that incompetence, or even treachery, played a more significant role.” There are also “conspiracy theories” about politicians in Kiev and Washington conspiring to sell the territory “down the river ahead of an ugly peace deal.”

Denis Yaroslavsky, a local commander who made national headlines for complaining thatfortifications that were supposed to prevent Russian advances did not really exist, told The Economist that Zelensky “is being kept in a warm bath” – that is, being told comforting lies by his aides.

The Economist's anonymous government source said the president has been clashing with Ukrainian generals after allegedly sensing that he was not getting the whole truth about the frontline situation.

Zelensky’sstrained relations with the military leadership, which reportedly stems fromhim putting his political goals ahead of military objectives, has previously been covered by Ukrainian and international media.

In December, the newspaper Ukrainskaya Pravda claimed that the president was actively undermining Valery Zaluzhny, who at the time was Ukraine’s most senior general, in favor of Aleksandr Syrsky.

“It seems Zelensky has two kinds of troops: ‘good’ ones commanded by Syrsky and other favorites and ‘bad’ ones under Zaluzhny,” a source told the outlet. “This demoralizes [Zaluzhny] and prevents him from commanding the army as a whole.”

In February, the Ukrainian leader fired Zaluzhny and appointed Syrsky as his replacement.

A profile of Zelensky published by Time magazine last November said the president’s uncompromising drive for a battlefield victory over Russia was“verging on the messianicand had put him at odds with some officers.

A military official described how at one point the president’s office issued a direct order to a unit on the ground to “retake” a certain city, and received the reply:“With what?” The unit had neither weapons nor soldiers, the source explained.

One dead, several injured as severe turbulence strikes Boeing aircraft (VIDEO)

Passengers were launched into the ceiling when the Singapore-bound jetliner plunged 6,000 feet in minutes

One person was killed and several others were injured when a Singapore Airlines flight from London encountered severe turbulence en route to Singapore on Tuesday. The Boeing 777 was forced to divert to Bangkok.

Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 departed Heathrow Airport on Monday night with 211 passengers and 18 crew on board. As the plane crossed the Bay of Bengalnear Thailand on Tuesday, it was stricken by “severe turbulence”and forced to land just before 4pm local time, the airline said in a statement.

“We can confirm that there are injuries and one fatality on board the Boeing 777-300ER. Singapore Airlines offers its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased,” the statement read.

Data from FlightRadar24 showed thewidebody jet dropping from 37,000 feet (11,278 meters)to 31,000 feet (9,449 meters) in aroundthree minutesas it neared the Thai coast.

“Suddenly the aircraft starts tilting up and there was shaking so I started bracing for what was happening, and very suddenly there was a very dramatic drop so everyone seated and not wearing a seatbelt was launched immediately into the ceiling,” passenger Dzafran Azmir told Reuters.

“Some people hit their heads on the baggage cabins overhead and dented it, they hit the places where lights and masks are and broke straight through it,” Azmir said.

Video footage shared on social media captured the moment passengers were thrown from their seats by the sudden drop. Photos apparently taken after the jet had landed showed the cabin strewn with rubbish and some passengers and crew members with visible injuries.

Turbulence is an unpredictable phenomenon with multiple causes. Rolling air currents passing over mountain tops, jet streams, and tropical storms can all disrupt calm air and cause turbulence. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) classifies four levels of turbulence ranging from ‘light’ to ‘extreme’. In ‘severe’ cases of turbulence, “the aircraft experiences abrupt changes in altitude and/or attitude, and may be out of the pilot’s control for short periods,” according to the NOAA.

While modern airliners like the Boeing 777 are designed to withstand even ‘extreme’ levels of turbulence, it can still be hazardousto passengers who aren’t wearing seatbelts. Last August, 11 people were hospitalized after a Delta Airlines flight from Milan to Atlanta ran into severe turbulence while descending through a thunderstorm over Georgia, and between 2009 and 2021, the US Federal Aviation Administration recorded 146 serious injuries as a result of turbulence.

Singapore Airlines’ last fatal accident occurred in 2000, when one of its Boeing 747s crashed while attempting to take off from a closed runway during a typhoon at Taiwan’s Chiang Kai-shek Airport; 79 passengers and four crew members were killed when the jet collided with construction equipment parked on the runway.

World Economic Forum founder Klaus Schwab steps back from executive post

World Economic Forum founder and executive chairman Klaus Schwab will be stepping back from his role running the global gathering since he founded it in 1971.

Schwab announced his intentions in an email to staff on Tuesday that was shared with Semafor by a person connected to the organization.

He will be stepping down as executive chairman and transitioning to a role as non-executive chairman, he said, adding the change in his role is pending approval by the Swiss government.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Forum said that the organization is “transforming from a convening platform to the leading global institution for public-private cooperation.” The Forum’s governance structure is set to change as a result of that evolution, the spokesperson said, and Schwab “will transition from Executive Chairman to Chairman of the Board of Trustees” by January 2025.

Schwab has not named his successor, but said that over the last year, the group’s executive board, “under the leadership of President Børge Brende, has taken full executive responsibility.”

Brende is a former Norwegian conservative leader.

Schwab, 86, is synonymous with the organization that he has managed for more than 50 years.

Initially known as the European Management Forum, early iterations of the event drew far fewer attendees to Davos than the thousands that now ascend to the Swiss mountain town.

Now, the annual WEF meeting in Davos attracts dozens of high-ranking world leaders and CEOs each year, with more than 50 heads of state attending in 2024, according to the organization.

The Forum operates much like a family business, with Schwab’s children appointed to high-ranking positions and his wife Hilde heading the organization’s foundation and awards ceremonies in Davos.

In recent years, the Forum has shifted its focus towards the center, and away from liberal politics, Semafor previously reported.

Succession at the WEF has been the subject of fevered speculation, and a Politico article floating possible names roiled the gathering in 2023.

The Forum has also been navigating a difficult political landscape, and has steered back toward the center in recent years after embracing progressive directions in culture and finance.

The WEF, though a nonprofit, is a remarkable business: The organization brought in nearly $500 million in revenue in the year ending March 2023, and had a neat 200 million Swiss francs sitting in cash, Semafor reported last year.

Embattled Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis suggested on Monday that the creation of a new prosecutorial oversight panel in Georgia is racially motivated.

“Georgia had never had a prosecutorial oversight committee,” Willis told MSNBC host Rachel Maddow when asked about the state Senate’s special committee investigation.

“All of a sudden, 14 minorities were elected to office to serve as district attorney,” she continued. “And now all of a sudden they need an oversight committee to look after district attorneys because they want to tell us how to prosecute and who to prosecute and where we should put our resources, as opposed to allowing the voters that put us in the seats to make those determinations.”

The new disciplinary board, approved by the GOP-controlled state legislature earlier this year andsigned into law by Republican Gov. Brian Kemp in March, will have the power to discipline and remove prosecutors from cases in Georgia found to have engaged in misconduct.

Willis, who is under investigation by the Georgia state Senate over her use of taxpayer money during her relationship with former special prosecutor Nathan Wade, could come under scrutiny from the new body over the same allegations and other aspects of her handling of the prosecution of former President Donald Trump.

“They use false reasons for wanting to come after me,” the district attorney said Monday.

“What is so ironic is, although it’s only 14 of the 50 DAs in the state of Georgia, most of the citizens report to our jurisdictions, so, although we’re smaller in number than the other 36, most of the population has elected these minority DAs to serve them and has trusted their judgment,” Willis argued.

“But apparently we now need Daddy to tell us how to do our job.”

Willis, 52, also railed against House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who subpoenaed the DA back in February over allegations she’s mishandling federal funds.

“Jim Jordan has time after time after time attacked my office with no legitimate purpose,” she claimed. “Anyone who knows Jim Jordan’s history knows that he only has the purpose of trying to interfere in a criminal investigation.”

“He has now turned his tricks to he’s going to look at grant programs — which I invite him to do — and we have complied with his subpoenas,” she added. “But yet he continues his attacks to try to interfere in a criminal investigation — all while his jurisdiction has one of the worst crime rates, has poverty issues, and not one time has he used his position to try to investigate people who are attacking me and attacking others legitimately doing their job — making him illegitimate in his position.”

“It’s disgusting,” Willis said of the congressional probe. “Now at the state level, they’ve decided to follow this clown’s lead.”

A spokesperson for Jordan did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

The Georgia state Senate special investigation panel held its third public hearing related to the Willis probe earlier this month, which delved into the amount of money the DA’s office has spent prosecuting the historic racketeering case against Trump and his co-defendants and the lack of oversight other government entities have over the district attorney’s office.

Willis has vowed not to appear before the panel, questioning state lawmakers’ authority to issue her a subpoena.

Date of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to EU revealed – media

Brussels is pushing to launch formal discussions on Kiev and Moldova joining the bloc as early as next month, Politico reports

The European Union is aiming to launch formal accession talks for Ukraine and Moldova as soon as June 25, Politico reported on Tuesday, citing diplomatic sources.

Policymakers from Brussels and Kiev are reportedly holding intensive consultations as they try to persuade Hungary to greenlight the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession bid. Commenting on condition of anonymity, five sources familiar with the matter told Politico that officials in Kiev and the EU have teamed up to address concerns about Hungarian minorities in Ukraine.

According to one EU diplomat, Budapest could seek to get Ukrainian accession talks out of the way before Hungary assumes the six-month rotating presidency of the EU Council in July. Belgium has scheduled an intergovernmental conference for the end of next month, a few days before the end of the Hungarian presidency, the source said.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky applied for “immediate” EU membership shortly after Russia launched its military campaign against its neighbor, with Kiev’s application for the bloc being signed on February 28, 2022. Moldovan President Maia Sandu soon followed suit, filing a formal membership application on March 3. In June 2022, President of the European Council Charles Michel announced that Ukraine and Moldova had both been granted EU candidate status.

At the time, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo signaled that providing Ukraine with EU-candidate status was a “symbolic message” of support for Kiev in the conflict with Russia.Actual EU membership, however, is still “many years” away and Ukrainemust first meet the bloc’s standards, he explained.

In October, Michel told Der Spiegel that the EU could admit Ukraine by 2030 if “both sides do their homework.” Last May, Sandu said in an interview with Bloomberg that Moldova could also join the EU by 2030, including the breakaway region of Transnistria, which currently hosts a Russian peacekeeping force.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said in October thatMoscow has never opposed Ukraine’s potential accession to the EU, as Russia does not see any military threat in economic cooperation between Kiev and international partners. At the same time, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov suggested thatUkraine’s accession to the bloc would undermine the pan-European system and could ultimately lead to its collapse.

Kiev also wants unrestricted weapons deliveries and frozen Russian assets

Ukraine wants unrestricted access to Western weapons, even more aid, and all frozen Russian funds, President Vladimir Zelensky’s chief of staff Andrey Yermak revealed on Tuesday.

At the Copenhagen Democracy Summit, organized by the pro-Ukrainian NGO Alliance of Democracies, Yermak announced a report authored by the group he co-chairs with the NGO head and former NATO secretary-general, Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

The ‘International Working Group on Security Issues and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine’ includes former British Prime MinisterBoris Johnson, former Finnish Prime MinisterSanna Marin, former US Secretary of StateHillary Clinton, retired US Army GeneralWesley Clark, and former US special envoy for UkraineKurt Volker, among others.

“It is important that allies spend 0.25% of their GDP on military aid to Ukraineand unlock $300 billion in frozen Russian assets to support our country,” Yermak said in a Telegram post summarizing the report.

According to Russian estimates, the US and its allies have provided over $200 billion worth of military aid to Kiev. While some EU countries have already contributed more than 0.25% of their GDP to arm Ukraine, Latvia last month pledged to do so annually for the next three years.

Another recommendation from the report, which Rasmussen presented at the Copenhagen event,was to lift “all restrictions on the supply of conventional weapons” to Kiev. Yermak chimed in to argue that there also should beno restrictions on the use of these weapons.

Rasmussen andYermak also called on NATO to invite Ukraine to its Washington summit this summer and set “a clear timeline” for Kiev’s membership, which they said should be “no later than July 2028, subject to the fulfillment of specific conditions.”

A NATO invitation to Ukraine would “become motivation and support for our military and all [our] citizens,” Yermak explained on Telegram.

Ukraine’s membership in NATO is a red line for Russia and preventing it is one of the reasons Moscow gave for launching its military operation in February 2022.

Zelensky expected a formal invitation to the bloc at last year’s NATO summit in Vilnius and launched a tirade on social media when it did not arrive. The US-led bloc eventually said it would be in a position to invite Ukraine “when allies agree and conditions are met.”

Ukraine has long demanded access to Russian assets frozenby the US and its allies at the start of hostilities in 2022. While Washington has favored their outright confiscation, the EU – which holds about 80% of the impacted sovereign funds – has been more hesitant, as any Russian retaliation would impact the bloc’s main clearinghouse and the euro in general. Moscow has said it would respond to the “theft” of its assets with equal measure, targeting the property of the offending countries under its jurisdiction.

US could sanction NATO applicant for ‘undermining democracy’ – Politico

Washington has threatened to punish Georgian politicians who voted for a ‘foreign agents’ law, the outlet has reported

The UScould sanctionmembers of the Georgian government after the country’s parliament passed a new ‘foreign agents’ law opposed by Washington, Politico reported on Monday, citing a draft document.

Georgia’s Transparency of Foreign InfluenceAct would require NGOs, media outlets, and individuals receiving more than 20% of their funding from abroadto register as entities“promoting the interests of a foreign power.”They must also disclose their donors or face a fine of up to $9,500.

On Friday, Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili vetoed the law, although the move is seen as largely symbolic and is expected to be overruled by parliament.

In their draft bill targeting politicians in the former Soviet state, US lawmakers accuse the ruling Georgian Dream party of an “increasingly illiberal turn.” They also claim Tbilisi has “openly attacked US and other Western democracy promotion organizations” while embracing “increased ties” with Russia and China.

In a bid to “secure democracy,” the proposed US legislation would impose sanctions on government officials who have “material responsibility for undermining or injuring democracy, human rights, or security in Georgia.”

It would also impose visa bans on politicians and the familiesof those responsible for the passage of “Russia-style” foreign agent legislation, the report said. Georgian security services and law enforcement who have clamped down on protests against the bill would also be targeted.

Zourabichvili, who is an independent, vetoed the controversial law on Friday following weeks of street protests and clashes with police in the Georgian capital. The president has argued that if signed into law, the bill would undermine the country’s aspiration to join the EU.

The presidential veto is seen by some political experts as largely symbolic, because parliament is controlled by the Georgian Dream party, which is expected to overrule it.

During a visit to Georgia last week,Assistant US Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs James O’Brienwarned of “restrictions coming from the United States” if Tbilisi adopts the legislation. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has also said that once enforced, the law would compel Washington to “fundamentally reassess” its relationship with Georgia, which is also seeking to join NATO.

If the government in Tbilisi abandons the law, however, the US could sign off on a major military and trade package, Politico said, citing a draft document. Along with improved access to US markets, thebill calls for a liberalization of the visa regime for Georgian citizens, it added.

NASA “Wildfire Digital Twin” Pioneers New AI Models and Streaming Data Techniques for Forecasting Fire and Smoke

NASA’s “Wildfire Digital Twin” project will equip firefighters and wildfire managers with a superior tool for monitoring wildfires and predicting harmful air pollution events and help researchers observe global wildfire trends more precisely.

The tool, developed with funding from NASA’s Earth Science Technology Office and NASA’s FireSense Program, will use artificial intelligence and machine learning to forecast potential burn paths in real time, merging data from in situ, airborne, and spaceborne sensors to produce global models with high precision.

Whereas current global models describing the spread of wildfires and smoke have a spatial resolution of about 10 kilometers per pixel, the Wildfire Digital Twin would produce regional ensemble models with a spatial resolution of 10-to-30 meters per pixel, an improvement of two orders of magnitude.

These models could be generated in a span of mere minutes. By comparison, current global models can take hours to produce.

Models with such high spatial resolution produced at this speed would be immensely valuable to first-responders and wildfire managers trying to observe and contain dynamic burns.

Milton Halem, a Professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, leads the Wildfire Digital Twin project, which includes a team of more than 20 researchers from six universities.

“We want to be able to provide firefighters with useful, timely information,” said Halem, adding that in the field, “there is generally no internet, and no access to big supercomputers, but with our API version of the model, they could run the digital twin not just on a laptop, but even a tablet,” he said.

NASA’s FireSense project is focused on leveraging the agency’s unique Earth science and technological capabilities to achieve improved wildfire management across the United States.

NASA’s Earth Science Technology Office supports this effort with its newest program element, Technology Development for support of Wildfire Science, Management, and Disaster Mitigation (FireSense Technology), which is dedicated to developing novel observation capabilities for predicting and managing wildfires –including technologies like Earth System Digital Twins.

Earth System Digital Twins are dynamic software tools for modeling and forecasting climate events in real time. These tools rely on data sources distributed across multiple domains to create ensemble predictions describing everything from floods to severe weather.

In addition to assisting first responders, an Earth System Digital Twin dedicated to modeling wildfires would also be valuable to scientists monitoring wildfire trends globally.

In particular, Halem hopes Wildfire Digital Twins will improve our ability to study wildfires across global boreal forests of cold-hardy conifers, which sequester vast amounts of carbon.

When these forests burn, all of that carbon is released back into the atmosphere. One study, released in August of 2023, found that boreal wildfires alone accounted for 25% of all global CO2 emissions for that year to date.

“The reason CO2 emissions from Boreal wildfires are taking place at an increasing yearly rate is because global warming is rising faster at high latitudes than the rest of the planet, and as a result, boreal summers there are becoming longer,” said Halem.

“Whereas the rest of the planet may have warmed one degree Celsius since the pre-industrial revolution, this region has warmed well over two degrees.”

Halem’s work builds on other wildfire models, particularly the NASA-Unified Weather Research and Forecasting (NUWRF) model, developed by NASA, and WRF-SFIRE, developed by a team of researchers with support from the National Science Foundation.

These models simulate phenomena like wind speed and cloud cover, which makes them the perfect foundation for a Wildfire Digital Twin.

Specifically, Halem’s team is working on new satellite data assimilation techniques that will blend information from space-based remote sensors into their Wildfire Digital Twin, enabling improved global data forecasts that will be useful for emergencies and science missions alike.

In October, Halem’s team participated in the first FireSense field campaign in collaboration with the National Forest Service’s Fire and Smoke Model Evaluation Experiment (FASMEE) to observe smoke as it travelled more than 10 miles during a controlled burn in Utah, using a ceilometer.

Now the team is feeding that data into their modeling software to help it track plumes more accurately.

Syrian first lady diagnosed with leukemia

Asma Assad is suffering from the acute myeloid strain of the disease, the presidency has revealed

Asma Assad, the wife of Syrian President Bashar Assad, has been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), his office revealed on Tuesday.

The condition was identified after the first lady underwent a series of tests following the onset of symptoms, the statement said. The 48-year-old will require isolation during her treatment, it added.

AML is a highly lethal type of cancer which affects bone marrow and can progress rapidly. Previous chemotherapy is a risk factor for the disease.

Asma Assad was previously diagnosed with breast cancer, but announced her full recovery in 2019 after receiving chemotherapy at a Syrian military hospital.

The British-born investment banker married Bashar Assad in December 2000, five months after he had taken power following the death of his father, Hafez Assad.

Why is the warm gas-giant exoplanet WASP-107 b so puffy? Two independent teams of researchers have an answer.

Data collected using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, combined with prior observations from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, show surprisingly little methane (CH4) in the planet’s atmosphere, indicating that the interior of WASP-107 b must be significantly hotter and the core much more massive than previously estimated.

The unexpectedly high temperature is thought to be a result of tidal heating caused by the planet’s slightly non-circular orbit, and can explain how WASP-107 b can be so inflated without resorting to extreme theories of how it formed.

The results, which were made possible by Webb’s extraordinary sensitivity and accompanying ability to measure light passing through exoplanet atmospheres, may explain the puffiness of dozens of low-density exoplanets, helping solve a long-standing mystery in exoplanet science.

At more than three-quarters the volume of Jupiter but less than one-tenth the mass, the “warm Neptune” exoplanet WASP-107 b is one of the least dense planets known.

While puffy planets are not uncommon, most are hotter and more massive, and therefore easier to explain.

“Based on its radius, mass, age, and assumed internal temperature, we thought WASP-107 b had a very small, rocky core surrounded by a huge mass of hydrogen and helium,” explained Luis Welbanks from Arizona State University (ASU), lead author on a paper published today in Nature.

“But it was hard to understand how such a small core could sweep up so much gas, and then stop short of growing fully into a Jupiter-mass planet.”

If WASP-107 b instead has more of its mass in the core, the atmosphere should have contracted as the planet cooled over time since it formed. Without a source of heat to re-expand the gas, the planet should be much smaller.

Although WASP-107 b has an orbital distance of just 5 million miles (one-seventh the distance between Mercury and the Sun), it doesn’t receive enough energy from its star to be so inflated.

“WASP-107 b is such an interesting target for Webb because it’s significantly cooler and more Neptune-like in mass than many of the other low-density planets, the hot Jupiters, we’ve been studying,” said David Sing from the Johns Hopkins University (JHU), lead author on a parallel study also published today in Nature.

“As a result, we should be able to detect methane and other molecules that can give us information about its chemistry and internal dynamics that we can’t get from a hotter planet.”

WASP-107 b’s giant radius, extended atmosphere, and edge-on orbit make it ideal for transmission spectroscopy, a method used to identify the various gases in an exoplanet atmosphere based on how they affect starlight.

Combining observations from Webb’s NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera), Webb’s MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument), and Hubble’s WFC3 (Wide Field Camera 3), Welbanks’ team was able to build a broad spectrum of 0.8- to 12.2-micron light absorbed by WASP-107 b’s atmosphere.

Using Webb’s NIRSpec (Near-Infrared Spectrograph), Sing’s team built an independent spectrum covering 2.7 to 5.2 microns.

The precision of the data makes it possible to not just detect, but actually measure the abundances of a wealth of molecules, including water vapor (H2O), methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ammonia (NH3).

Both spectra show a surprising lack of methane in WASP-107 b’s atmosphere: one-thousandth the amount expected based on its assumed temperature.

“This is evidence that hot gas from deep in the planet must be mixing vigorously with the cooler layers higher up,” explained Sing. “Methane is unstable at high temperatures. The fact that we detected so little, even though we did detect other carbon-bearing molecules, tells us that the interior of the planet must be significantly hotter than we thought.”

A likely source of WASP-107 b’s extra internal energy is tidal heating caused by its slightly elliptical orbit. With the distance between the star and planet changing continuously over the 5.7-day orbit, the gravitational pull is also changing, stretching the planet and heating it up.

Researchers had previously proposed that tidal heating could be the cause of WASP-107 b’s puffiness, but until the Webb results were in, there was no evidence.

Once they established that the planet has enough internal heat to thoroughly churn up the atmosphere, the teams realized that the spectra could also provide a new way to estimate the size of the core.

Gov. Doug Burgum announced NASA astronaut James Buchli as the 49th recipient of the North Dakota Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award, the state’s highest commendation for its citizens.

Buchli born in New Rockford, has represented North Dakota in the fields of aviation and space exploration with immense skill and dedication, captivating and inspiring North Dakotans and space enthusiasts around the world.

Buchli became the first North Dakotan to fly in space and is a veteran of four space flights. He has orbited the Earth 319 times, traveled 7.74 million miles and spent more than 20 days in space.

He was a distinguished Marine Corps aviator before becoming a NASA astronaut with a career marked by impeccable service and groundbreaking achievements.

“Jim Buchli’s distinguished career is a testament to perseverance, expertise and leadership. He flew on four space shuttle missions and participated in scientific experiments, satellite deployments and defense-related space operations of great importance to our country,” said Burgum.

“An exceptional North Dakotan, Buchli is a great supporter of the UND Aerospaceprogram and shares his experience and skills with aspiring students.

A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Buchli began his career with a commission as a Second Lieutenant upon his graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1967, followed by a master’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering Systems from the University of West Florida. As a Marine Corps officer, Buchli served with valor during the Vietnam War, earned numerous decorations and demonstrated exceptional skill as a naval aviator with over 4,200 flight hours in 17 aircraft types.

As a NASA astronaut, Buchli quickly established himself as a critical member of the pioneering space shuttle program. Selected in 1978 after completion of the Navy Test Pilot School, Buchli brought his extensive military experience to the space program, becoming one of the first astronauts specifically chosen for the space shuttle era.

His missions included high-profile and challenging flights such as STS-51C, the first Department of Defense mission, and STS-61A, a joint venture with West Germany that featured the largest crew at that time and the first international payload operations.

Buchli’s career was marked by important scientific experiments and satellite deployments, such as the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite during STS-48.

Following his active flight career, Buchli continued to serve as Deputy Chief of the Astronaut Office, where he played a key role in astronaut training and operations.

Russia launches tactical nuclear drills (VIDEO)

The exercise will involve the delivery of nuclear weapons to troops, covert deployment, and preparations to a strike, the Defense Ministry has said

The troops of Russia’s Southern Military District launched thefirst stage of recently announced tactical nuclear drillson Tuesday, the Defense Ministry has said.

The exercise is designed to serve as adeterrent amid continued escalation between Russia and the West, through the demonstration of Moscow’s ability to respond to any external threats, the Ministry said earlier.

It will involve deliveries of nuclear weapons to troops from their storage sites, nuclear arming of tactical missiles, and preparations for missile launches, the ministry announced in a statement on Telegram.

The troops will be using the Iskander-M systems, which can fire 9M723-1 ballistic missiles or the 9M728 cruise missiles, both of which can carry tactical nuclear warheads with yields between five and 50 kilotons.

The Southern Military District forces willalso practice covert deployment operationsusing the systems, as part of launch-preparation drills, according to the military.

The exercise will also involve nuclear arming of the air-launched missiles, including the state-of-the-art, hypersonic Kinzhal. The Kh-47M2 Kinzhal missiles and the Kh-32 cruise missiles that are delivered by Russian bombers are capable of carrying warheads similar to those mounted on Iskander projectiles. During the drills, Russian aircraft are to fly on patrol missions armed with these missiles, according to the ministry.

A video published by the military shows crews of several Iskander-M systems arming them with missiles and preparing them for launch.

The drills are “aimed at maintaining the combat readiness of the personnel and equipment of the non-strategic nuclear-weapon units,” the ministry’s statement said. It added that Russian forces should be ready to “unconditionally” ensure sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country, amid “provocative statements and threats” made by some Western officials.

Moscow announced the drills earlierin May, citingwhat it called a “new” and “unprecedented” escalation in the Ukraine conflict. The Kremlin pointed to statements by French President Emmanuel Macron, who has repeatedly refused to rule out a NATO deployment in Ukraine.

Similar ideas have been voiced by US House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries. Former UK prime minister and current Foreign Secretary David Cameron also stated recently that Kiev has the right to use British weapons to strike targets deep inside Russia. In response, Moscow summoned the British ambassador and warned of a potential response to such attacks.

You probably don’t recognize the name Kehinde Wiley, but you might recognize his ridiculous official portrait of Obama in which one of the worst men to ever squat in the White House appears to be sitting in a chair inside a bush or some hedgerows.

Widely praised by the TED Talk people and mocked by everyone else (at least until King Charlie’s portrait came along), there didn’t seem to be much of a case to be made for it except that the Obamas were determined to make history by picking black artists and they couldn’t find any so they had to settle for these junior high school art projects that smell like paste when you look at them.

Anyway, to make a long story short, you might recognize Wiley’s name after this.

In an Instagram post shared Sunday, British-Ghanaian artist and curator Joseph Awuah-Darko alleged Wiley sexually assaulted him twice in 2021. Awuah-Darko said the first incident occurred on June 9, 2021, at a dinner held at the Noldor Artist Residency in Ghana, to celebrate Wiley’s work. Awuah-Darko is the founder and chairman of the Accra-based program.

In the post, he claimed he was “inappropriately groped” by Wiley, in front of another guest, and that the action was “unwelcome and unprovoked.” He then described a second incident that day as “much more severe and violent,” without elaborating further. (In a subsequent interview with the New York Times, he claimed that “a sexual encounter began consensually, but that it then moved to a bedroom, where… Mr. Wiley forced himself on him after Mr. Awuah-Darko had said he did not want to go further.”)

The assaults “almost destroyed me,” Awuah-Darko wrote in the post, adding he hoped that others would feel empowered to come forward.

Wiley is denying the accusations, and this is as much as I want to know about the whole thing except that having another Obama grandiose woke gesture boil down to this is perfectly on brand.

The U.S. Space Force is set to partner with startup Starfish Space to launch a satellite "jetpack" that can dock with "virtually any" satellite currently in orbit and assist with maneuvering capabilities in a $37.5 million contract.

The first-of-its kind technology would be able to extend the life of satellites by docking to them and using its own fuel to keep them operational in Geostationary orbit.

The new kit, dubbed "Otter," can also be used to dispose of defunct satellites that pose collision risks to functional satellites, freeing up space in Earth's already crowded orbital zone.

According to Starfish Space, "Otter's" kit includes autonomous guidance and control software that "enables complex RPOD [Rendezvous, Proximity Operations and Docking] missions," binocular computer vision, and a reusable system that allows for docking on "virtually any" flat surface in orbit.

"Starfish looks forward to collaborating with the Space Force to build the capabilities required to enable Dynamic Space Operations," said Trevor Bennett, co-founder at Starfish Space, in a statement provided to Newsweek.

"We are in a position to deliver a real on-orbit capability on a relevant timeframe. We're proud to support the DoD in its national security objectives, and grateful to our partners at Space Systems Command, USSPACECOM, SpaceWERX, and across the DoD."

Air & Space Forces Magazine reported that the company aims to launch one of its "Otter" craft by 2026.

Starfish Space says it envisions a wide array of applications for the technology, including in-space inspection, orbital relocation, and logistics services, as well as conducting repairs, component upgrades, and in-space assembly and manufacturing.

Starfish Space's contract with USSF comes after the startup completed its first mission to demonstrate the technology, "Otter Pup," earlier this month.

Newsweek has contacted the Space Force for comment via email.

As of 2021 there were 6,542 satellites in orbit above Earth. Approximately half of these were non-functional.

Founded in 2019 by Austin Link and Trevor Bennet, Starfish Space is a startup that focuses on satellite servicing, aiming to capitalize on the need for orbital maintenance.

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s extremely warm reception of President Vladimir Putin yesterday in Beijing sealed theincreasingly formidable Russia-China strategic relationship. It amounts to a tectonic shiftin the world balance of power.

The Russia-China entente also sounds the death knell for attempts by U.S. foreign policy neophytes to drive a wedge between the two countries. The triangular relationship has become two-against-one, with serious implications, particularly for the war in Ukraine. If U.S. President Joe Biden’s foreign policy geniuses remain in denial, escalation is almost certain.

In a pre-visit interview with Xinhua,Putin noted the “unprecedented level of strategic partnershipbetween our countries.” He and Xi have met more than 40 times in person or virtually. In June 2018, Xi described Putin as “an old friend of the Chinese people” and,personally, his “best friend.”(Does Xi have best friends?)

For his part, Putin noted Thursday that he and Xi are “in constant contact to keep personal control over all pressing issues on the Russian-Chinese and international agenda.” Putin brought along Defense Minister Andrey Belousov as well as veterans like Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and key business leaders.

Joint Statements Matter

Xi and Putin signed a strong joint statement Thursday, similar to the extraordinary one the two issued on Feb. 4, 2022, in Beijing. It portrayed their relationship as “superior to political and military alliances of the Cold War era.Friendship between the two States has no limits, there are no ‘forbidden’ areas of cooperation …”

The full import of that statement did not hit home until Putin launched the Special Military Operation into the Donbass three weeks later. China’s muted reaction shocked most analysts, who had dismissed the possibility that Xi would give “best friend” Putin, in effect, a waiver on China’s bedrock policy of non-interference abroad.

In the following weeks, official Chinese statements made clear that the principles of Westphalia had taken a back seat to “the need for every country to defend its core interests” and to judge each situation “on its own merits.”

Nuclear War

Thursday’s statement expressed concern over “increased strategic risks between nuclear powers” — referring to continued escalation of the war between NATO-supported Ukraine and Russia. It condemns “the expansion of military alliances and creation of military bridgeheads close to the borders of other nuclear powers, particularly with the advanced deployment of nuclear weapons and their means of delivery, as well as other items.”

Putin has undoubtedly briefed Xi on the U.S. missile sites already in Romania and Polandthat can launch what Russians call “offensive strike missiles” with flight time to Moscow of less than 10 minutes. Putin surely has told Xi about theinconsistencies in U.S. statements regarding intermediate-range nuclear missiles.

For example, Xi is aware — just as surely as consumers of Western media are unaware — thatduring a Dec. 30, 2021, telephone conversation, Biden assured Putin that “Washington had no intention of deploying offensive strike weapons in Ukraine.”

There was rejoicing in the Kremlin that New Years’ Eve, since Biden’s assurance was the first sign that Washington might acknowledge Russia’s security concerns. Indeed, Biden addressed a key issue in at least five of the eight articles of the Russian draft treaty given to the U.S. on Dec. 17, 2021. Russian rejoicing, however, was short-lived.

Foreign Minister Lavrov revealed last month that when he met Antony Blinken in Geneva in January 2022, the U.S. secretary of state pretended he’d not heard of Biden’s undertaking to Putin on Dec. 30, 2021. Rather,Blinken insisted that U.S. medium-range missiles could be deployed in Ukraine, and only that the U.S. might be willing to limit their number, Lavrov said.

The Mother of All Miscalculations

When Biden took office in 2021, his advisers assured him that he could play on Russia’s fear (sic) of China anddrive a wedge between them. This became embarrassingly clear when Biden indicated what he had told Putin during their Geneva summit on June 16, 2021.

That meeting gave Putin confirmation that Biden and his advisers were stuckin a woefully outdated appraisal of Russia-China relations.Here is the bizarre wayBiden described his approach to Putin on China:

“Without quoting him [Putin] — which I don’t think is appropriate — let me ask a rhetorical question: You got a multi-thousand-mile border with China. China is seeking to be the most powerful economy in the world and the largest and the most powerful military in the world.”

The ‘Squeeze’

At the airport after the summit, Biden’s aides did their best to whisk him onto the plane, but failed to stop him from sharing more wisdom on China:

“Russia is in a very, very difficult spot right now. They are being squeezed by China.”

After these remarksPutin and Xi spent the rest of 2021trying to disabuse Biden of the “China squeeze” on Russia: itwas not a squeeze, but a fraternal embrace. This mutual effort culminated in a Xi-Putin virtual summit on Dec. 15 of that year.

The video of the first minute of their conversation was picked up by The New York Times, as well as others. Still, most commentators seemed to miss its significance:

Next February I expect we can finally meet in person in Beijing as we agreed. We will hold talks and then participate in the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games. I am grateful for your invitation to attend this landmark event.”

Xi:

“Dear President Putin, my old friend. It’s my pleasure to meet you at the end of this year by video, the second time this year,our 37th meeting since 2013.

You have hailed … China-Russia relations as a model in international collaboration in the 21st Century, strongly supporting China’s position on safeguarding its core interests, and firmly opposed to attempts to drive a wedge between our two countries. I highly appreciate it.”

Is Biden still unaware of this?Have his advisers told him that Russia and China have never been closer, with what amounts to a virtual military alliance?

The Election

Putin has said he is aware that Washington’s policy toward Russia “is primarily impacted by domestic political processes.” Russia and China certainly assess that Biden’s policy on Ukraine will be influenced by the political imperative to be seen as facing Russia down.

If NATO country hotheads send “trainers” to Ukraine, the prospect of a military dust-up is ever present.What Biden needs to knowis that, if it comes to openhostilities between Russia and the West, he is likely to face more than just saber rattling in the South China Sea — andthe specter of a two-front war.

The Chinese know they are next in line for the ministrations of NATO/East.

Indeed, it is no secret that the Pentagon sees China as enemy No. 1. According to the DOD’s National Defense Strategy, “defense priorities are first, defending the homeland, paced to the growing multi-domain threat posed by the People’s Republic of China.”

The Pentagon will be the last to sing a requiem for the dearly departed unipolar world. May sanity prevail.

Imprisoned ex-Trump aide Peter Navarro predicts Fed Chair’s ouster and ‘mass deportations’ in a second presidential term

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell would be gone in the first 100 days of a second Donald Trump term that would also include mass deportations of undocumented immigrants and more tariffs on Chinese goods, former White House economic adviser Peter Navarro told Semafor from the federal prison where he is serving a four-month sentence for refusing to cooperate with a congressional probe into the Jan. 6 riots at the Capitol.

Navarro, who directed Trump’s Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy until 2021, has remained loyal to the former president. Donald Trump Jr. and other members of the candidate’s inner circle have visited Navarro at the minimum-security facility in Miami where he is being held, a signal that he could have a prominent role in another Trump administration.

Navarro laid out the former president’s economic priorities in an exclusive interview, writing his responses on the email system at the prison’s law library, where he works.

Navarro said he hopes to speak at the Republican National Convention if he can make it out in time, with his scheduled release date of around July 17 falling in the middle of the gathering. He wants to tout Trump’s economic agenda, laid out in a book he has been wrapping up in prison, The New MAGA Deal, which will be released the week of the convention.

His time behind bars hasn’t tempered Navarro, an anti-China hardliner who battled with more globally minded Wall Street executives who joined the Trump administration. He continues to bash Gary Cohn, Trump’s ex-director of the National Economic Council, and former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, both Goldman Sachs alumni.

Gina Chon: What are Trump’s economic priorities if he wins?

Peter Navarro: The New MAGA Deal documents 100 actions in 100 days. At the top of the trade list is Trump’s Reciprocal Trade Act, originally introduced by Congressman Sean Duffy in 2019. If countries refuse to lower their tariffs to our levels, the president would have the authority to raise our tariffs to theirs. It is the most common sense route to balancing our trade deficit and thereby stimulating economic growth, and strengthening the US dollar. It should appeal to protectionists and free traders alike.

Chon: What didn’t get done in the last term that would be back on the table?

Navarro: One of the biggest pieces of unfinished Trump business is to solidify Buy American, Hire American government procurement, and reshore our private sector supply chains and manufacturing back to US soil. We are dangerously vulnerable to foreign coercion in everything from defense applications and tech, to pharmaceuticals.

Trump will also quickly seal the border and begin mass deportations. Biden has imported a wave of crime and terrorism along with an uneducated mass that drives down wages of Black, brown, and blue-collar Americans. Blacks and Hispanics, particularly males in the workforce, are flocking to Trump in droves.

By 2014 McBride had compiled a dossier into profound command failings that saw examples of potential war crimes in Afghanistan overlooked and other soldiers wrongly accused. Sometimes a whistleblower does everything right. He or she makes a revelation that is clearly in the public interest. The revelation is clearly a violation of the law. And then he or she is even more clearly abused by the government. It would be great if these stories always had happy endings. Unfortunately, they don’t.

In this case, the whistleblower, the hero,Australian David McBride has been sentenced to five years and eight months in prison for telling the truth. He will not be eligible for parole for 27 months.

David McBride is former British Army officer and a lawyer with the Australian Special Forces who blew the whistle on war crimes committed by Australian soldiers in Afghanistan,specifically the killing of 39 unarmed Afghan prisoners, farmers, and civilians in 2012.

After failing to raise a response through official channels, McBride shared the information with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), which published a series of major reports based on the material.

The ABC broadcasts in 2017 led to a major inquiry that upheld many of the allegations. Despite this, the ABC and its journalists themselves came under threat of prosecution for their work on the story.

The ABC offices in Sydney were raided by the national police, but in the end the government did not prosecute an ABC journalist because it was not in the public interest. McBride himself, however, was prosecuted for dissemination of official information.

Two Tours in Afghanistan

Let’s go back a few years. McBride at the time already was a seasoned attorney.After studying for a second law degree at Oxford University, he joined the British military and eventually moved back to Australia where he became a lawyer in the Australian Defence Forces (ADF). In that role he had two tours in Afghanistan in 2011 and 2013.

While on deployment, McBride became critical of the terms of engagement and other regulations that soldiers were working under, which he felt were endangering military personnel for the sake of political imperatives determined elsewhere.

By 2014 McBride had compiled a dossier into profound command failings that saw examples of potential war crimes in Afghanistan overlooked and other soldiers wrongly accused. His internal complaints were suppressed and ignored.

McBride’s reports also looked at other matters, including the military’s handling of sexual abuse allegations. After his use of internal channels had proven ineffective, McBride gave his report to the police. And eventually, he contacted journalists at ABC.

ABC’sAfghan Files documented several incidents of Australian soldiers killing unarmed civilians, including children, and questioned the prevalent “warrior culture” in the special forces. Subsequent to McBride’s disclosures, the behavior of other Coalition Special Forces in Afghanistan also came under sustained investigation.

In many ways, McBride’s reports went further than the issues identified by ABC. Amid prevalent rumors that Australian troops were responsible for war crimes, questionable deaths in Afghanistan had led to calls for investigations.

Report Vindicated McBride & ABC

In November 2020, the Brereton report (formally called the Inspector General of the Australian Defence Force Afghan Inquiry report) was published, utterly vindicating McBride and the ABC. Judge Paul Brereton found evidence of multiple incidents involving Australian personnel that had led to39 deaths.

Among his recommendations were the investigation of these incidents for possible future criminal charges.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has angrily condemned the International Criminal Court's prosecutor for seeking arrest warrants for him alongside Hamas's leaders over alleged war crimes in the Gaza conflict.

Mr Netanyahu said he rejected with disgust that "democratic Israel" had been compared with what he called "mass murderers".

Mr Netanyahu's comments have been echoed by US President Joe Biden, who said there was no equivalence between Israel and Hamas.

The chief ICC prosecutor, Karim Khan, said there were reasonable grounds to believe that Mr Netanyahu and his Defence Minister Yoav Gallant bore criminal responsibility for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Mr Gallant on Tuesday described the ICC's arrest warrants against him and the prime minister as a "disgraceful" attempt to interfere in the war.

The ICC is also seeking a warrant for Hamas's leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, for war crimes.

Israel and the US, its key ally, are not members of the ICC, which was set up in 2002.

The accusations against the Israeli and Hamas leaders stem from the events of 7 October, when waves of Hamas gunmen attacked Israel, killing about 1,200 people and taking 252 others back to Gaza as hostages. The attack triggered the current war, in which at least 35,500 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry.

On Monday, Mr Biden said there was "no equivalence - none - between Israel and Hamas".

"It's clear Israel wants to do all it can to ensure civilian protection," Mr Biden added.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken echoed the president's condemnation, saying Washington "fundamentally rejects" the move. "It is shameful," he said. "[The] ICC has no jurisdiction over this matter."

Mr Blinken also suggested the request for arrest warrants would jeopardise ongoing efforts to reach a ceasefire deal.

Mr Khan said Israel's prime minister and defence minister were suspected of crimes including starvation of civilians as a method of warfare, murder, intentionally directing attacks against a civilian population, and extermination.

The prosecutor said the alleged crimes began "from at least 7 October 2023" in the Hamas leaders' case, when the group launched its attack on Israel, and "from at least 8 October 2023" for the Israeli leaders.

The ICC defended its stance on Monday, saying that despite "significant efforts" it had not received "any information that has demonstrated genuine action at the domestic level [in Israel] to address the crimes alleged or the individuals under investigation".

A panel of judges at the ICC must now consider whether to issue the warrants and, if they do, countries signed up to the ICC statute are obliged to arrest the men if they have such an opportunity.

Mr Netanyahu, Israel's longest-serving prime minister, condemned the application to seek his arrest as "an absurd and false order".

In a public statement in Hebrew, he asked "with what audacity" the ICC would "dare to compare" Hamas and Israel.

The comparison was a "distortion of reality", Mr Netanyahu said.

He accused the prosecutor of "callously pouring gasoline on the fires of antisemitism that are raging across the world".

Israel's Foreign Minister Israel Katz called the move by Mr Khan an "unrestrained frontal assault" on the victims of the 7 October attacks and a "historical disgrace that will be remembered forever".

In a statement, Mr Gallant reiterated: "The IDF is fighting in accordance with international law, while taking unprecedented measures to facilitate humanitarian aid.

"The State of Israel is not a party to the court and does not recognise its authority."

Some of Israel's Western allies avoided directly criticising the ICC in their statements.

In a statement late on Monday, the French foreign ministry said it supported the court and what it called its "fight against impunity in all situations".

Similarly, Germany's foreign ministry said it “respects the independence and procedures” of the ICC.

However, Berlin did criticise the simultaneous publication of the charges against Israeli and Hamas leaders, saying the move "created the incorrect impression of equivalency".

There would be almost no criminal charges, however. At least, there would be only one eventual criminal charge against one single soldier in the murder of Afghan civilians. There have been no charges against the officers who covered up the war crimes.

Instead, though, there would beserious charges against McBride for “theft of government property” (the information) and for “sharing with members of the press documents classified as secret.” He faced life in prison.

McBride’s sentence illustrates the challenges that Australian whistleblowers face when reporting evidence of waste, fraud, abuse, illegality, or threats to the public health or public safety.

First, just like in the United States, there are no protections for national security whistleblowers. McBride took his career — indeed, his life — into his hands when he decided to go public with his revelations. But what else could he do?

Second, as in the United States, there is no affirmative defense. McBride, like Edward Snowden, Jeffrey Sterling, Daniel Hale and like me, was forbidden from standing up in court and saying, “Yes, I gave the information to the media because I witnessed a war crime or a crime against humanity. What I did was in the public interest.”

Those words are never permitted to be spoken in a court in the United States or Australia.

Recalling Nuremberg

Third, Australia is in dire need of some legal reforms. The judgein McBride’s case said at sentencing that McBride, “had no duty as an army officer beyond following orders.”That defense was attempted at Nuremberg and it failed. It’s time for the Australian judiciary to get into the 21st century.

There are a couple points of light in this whole fiasco. The Brereton Commission did indeed recommend that 19 members of the Australian Special Forces be prosecuted for war crimes. So far, one has been charged with a crime. He is accused of shooting and killing a civilian in a wheat field in

Uruzgan Province in 2012.

And McBride will be allowed to appeal his conviction. Still any other light at the end of the tunnel is likely an oncoming train, rather than relief for the whistleblower.

But the bottom line is this. There is a war against whistleblowers in Australia just like there is in the United States.

Indeed, Andrew Wilkie, a former Australian government intelligence analyst-turned-whistleblower, and now member of Parliament, says that“the Australian government hates whistleblowers” and that it wanted to punish David McBrideand to send a signal to other government insiders to remain silent, even in the face of witnessing horrible crimes. I would say exactly the same thing about the United States.

I’m proud to call David McBride a friend. I know exactly what he’s going through right now. But his sacrifice will not be in vain. History will smile on him. Yes, the next several years will be tough. He’ll be a prisoner. He’ll be separated from his family. And when he gets out of prison, well into his 60s, he’ll have to begin rebuilding his life. But he is right and his government is wrong. And future generations will understand and appreciate what he did for them.

The long-expected layoffs at Pixar Animation Studios have begun.

Today, leadership at the storied company that traces it origins to the late Steve Jobs and was bought by Disney in 2006 will notify employees of the reductions, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. It is the biggest restructuring in Pixar’s history, although top leadership isn’t impacted.

Approximately 14 percent of Pixar’s workforce, or around 175 employees, will be let go. Before the reductions, approximately 1,300 people worked at the animation studio.

The layoffs are part of Disney chief Bob Iger’s overarching mandate to return to a focus on quality, versus churning out content for streaming which was a priority for his sort-lived successor, Bob Chapek. Disney execs have talked about returning to a focus on quality during numerous earnings calls this year, saying creative teams across the company were stretched too thin in the arms race to feed streamers.

Three weeks ago, his attorney sent a legal letter to Fox News threatening to sue the media empire for allegedly conspiring with Trumpland operatives and pro-Russia foreign nationals to defame him, and for exploiting his image for profit.

And in an exclusive interview with The Daily Beast, the 54-year-old blasted Rupert Murdoch’s flagship for using his infamous drug addiction to “dehumanize” him in order to take down his father.

“I’m not saying my addiction is an excuse for my bad behavior. What I’m saying is that my addiction is not an excuse for them to dehumanize me—and in doing so dehumanize everybody from the addict that you pass it on the street, to the one that you live with,” he said.

“That is the principal motivating factor,” Biden said, mocking near-nightly attacks spouted by Fox News personalities, “Addict, addict, addict, addict, you know. Crack addict, he’s a crack addict, smoking crack, addict.” The demand letter that Biden’s attorneys sent Fox asked the network to issue written retractions and on-air apologies and corrections for hundreds of online articles and broadcasts.

His lawyers told The Daily Beast they plan to file a lawsuit “shortly.”

The Yale Law graduate said he’s not under any delusion about the challenges that lie ahead if he does sue—nor is he deterred. “Everybody that has ever thought about bringing a defamation suit is always told they’re just going to spend any legal proceeding defaming you all over again,” he said, going on to explain why that did not discourage him. “It’s not like I’m going to reignite some controversy over whether or not I ever smoked crack.”

If the lawsuit moves forward to the discovery phase, Biden claimed, it will make the months of embarrassing revelations from Dominion Voting Systems’ successful defamation suit against Fox News—over the promotion of lies about the 2020 election—look like “pattycakes.”

Asked for a response to Biden’s allegations, aFox spokesperson referred The Daily Beast to a previous statement that cited its “constitutionally protected coverage” about “a public figure who has been the subject of investigationsby both the Department of Justice and Congress, has been indicted by two different US Attorney’s Offices in California and Delaware, and has admitted to multiple incidents of wrongdoing.”

“Consistent with the First Amendment, Fox News has accurately covered these highly publicized eventsas well as the subsequent indictment of an FBI informant who was the source of certain claims made about Mr. Biden,” that statement said.

Biden’s attorneys later demanded that the network retract this statement, alleging that it “falsely states that Hunter Biden was the subject of an investigation by Congress…mischaracterizes the plain facts of his litigation, and intentionally avoids telling their audience that their attacks on Hunter were ‘based’ on an informant who lied.”

Hunter Biden’s hopes of a somewhat private life went out the window three-and-a-half years ago, when the salacious contents of his personal laptop first exploded in the media. These days, he keeps mostly to himself and a small circle of family, friends, and trusted advisers. But he said he can’t keep his antagonists at bay. Invasions of privacy are so routine—“All the fucking time,” he says—that they even interrupted our interview.

This experience—of imposters, pranksters, or operatives contacting people he knows and making bizarre, vulgar and offensive false claims—is normal for Hunter since gigabytes of his private data were publicly dumped on the internet.

US threatens German banks with sanctions – Reuters

The treasury secretary has urged financial institutions to comply with restrictions on Russia or face penalties

German bank executives need to increase their compliance with sanctions on Russia, and shut down any efforts to circumvent them, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned on Tuesday during a meeting with bankers in Frankfurt, according to Reuters.

The US official reportedly stressed that Russia must not be allowed to procure “sensitive goods” to aid its military operation in Ukraine, and warned that Washington now has the authority to hit foreign banks with secondary sanctions if they are believed to be aiding Russian military-related transactions.

“I urge all institutions here to take heightened compliance measures and to increase your focus on Russian evasion attempts,” Yellen said, warning that those who fail to do so may be prevented from using the US dollar.

Reuters reported that she also told the executives to police sanctions compliance at their foreign branches and subsidiaries, and reach out to foreign correspondent banking customers to do the same, especially in high-risk jurisdictions.

Yellen suggested that Russia is now “desperate” to obtain critical goods from Germany and the US, and that such countries must “remain vigilant to prevent the Kremlin’s ability to supply its defense industrial base and to access our financial systems to do so.”

Earlier this month, Reuters also reported that the US Treasury had threatened to cut off the access of Raiffeisen Bank International (RBI) to the American financial system due to its continued activity in Russia.

The Austrian lender is one of the few foreign banks that has yet to suspend operations in Russia despite Western sanctions. However, in a letter seen by Reuters, US Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo warned thatRBI’s continued presence in Russia threatened US national security, and suggested curbing its access to the US dollar.

After the warning, RBI announced it would no longer expand its business in Russia, while a spokesman for the group said it had “significantly reduced” its presence in the country to mitigate the risks from sanctions.

“RBI will continue to work towards the de-consolidation of its Russian subsidiary,” the spokesperson told Reuters.

The European Central Bank has also pressured all banks in the Eurozone to speed up their exits from Russia or face US sanctions – and instructed them to submit an “action plan” by next month detailing how they will suspend their operations in the country.

Another Cybertruck owner has reported technical issues with his brand-new electric pickup after driving no more than 35 miles.

Jason Jones purchased his new Cybertruck in Pensacola, Florida on May 9, spending $119,990 on the "Cyberbeast" variant of the Cybertruck. He picked it up at the Tesla Service Center and drove 35 miles to a nearby Supercharger station in Crestview on his way home to Destin. But as he was charging the truck, it began leaking coolant from the rear.

Jones immediately called Tesla's customer service for assistance, but to his surprise, coolant leaks were not covered under warranty. He then posted about his situation on X with an accompanying picture of his Cybertruck.

"@elonmusk Broke down 35 miles from delivery @Tesla Pensacola with my new CyberBeast. Called Tesla service and the rep told me Tesla doesn't cover coolant leaks. They did end up sending a tow truck. No delivery experience at all and the truck was very dirty at pick up," wrote Jones.

Jones also posted his frustration over the condition of the truck at the Pensacola service center.

"The other thing that really frustrates me… is, when I picked it up … the truck was very dirty outside and [had] issues inside. Charge was 47 percent… I've never picked up a new car without a full tank of gas. WTF Tesla?" Jason wrote.

He also voiced all this frustration on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum. And only when his posts went viral did Tesla take immediate action.

Tesla Cybertruck issues continue to pile up

Reports of Tesla's Cybertruck experiencing grave malfunctions started popping up almost immediately after it entered the market. The situation with Jones' Cyberbeast adds to the long list of incidents that occur immediately after purchase of the electric trucks.

Aside from the coolant leak incident, new owners are reporting accelerator pedal flaws, software glitches, rust, brake failures, easily soiled exteriors and panel misalignment.

In another setback, a Tesla Cybertruck stranded on the Corral Hollow OHV (off-highway vehicle) Trail in Bear Valley, California, suffered from software glitches that affected its traction control and tire deflation. Rescuers found that the truck had no proper tow points, which forced them to attach ropes to the suspension for recovery.

Moreover, other Cybertruck owners in California have reported seeing "orangish tints and spots" indicative of rust after rain exposure, despite its "ultra-hard stainless-steel exoskeleton" meant to minimize dents, damage and corrosion. Another video that went viral in December showed how a Tesla Cybertruck, carrying a Christmas tree, experienced brake failure, while struggling on the snowy off-road hill in California's Stanislaus National Forest.

(Ken Silva, Headline USA) Saudi Arabia’s involvement in 9/11 has been public information for decades, with numerous sources documenting how Saudi officials Fahad al-Thumairy and Omar al-Bayoumi allegedly assisted at least two of the hijackers ahead of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

But were Thumairy and Bayoumi rogue criminal religious zealots, or were they operating under the direction of the Saudi Arabian government?

A bombshell court filing in a long-running 9/11 lawsuit makes the case for the latter argument. Families of 9/11 victims argued in a 71-page brief filed on May 7 that Thumairy and Bayoumi operated under the directions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

“The evidence is clear that Saudi Arabia deployed its officials and agents to serve in an illegal government enterprise that was extensively intertwined with terrorism, so that the agents were acting within their core mission when they helped integrate the hijackers into the United States,” plaintiffs said in their May 7 brief, which is in response to Saudi Arabia’s motion to dismiss.

“The evidence also shows that Bayoumi and Thumairy acted at all times in accordance with the directives of more senior Saudi officials, which separately establishes that they were acting within the scope of their agencies and employment.”

The 71-page, partially redacted court filing compiles evidence that has been trickling out over the last several years about Saudi’s involvement in 9/11. That includes a 2017 FBI report that said Bayoumi was operating directly under then Ambassador Prince Bandar bin Sultan Alsaud—a close friend of the Bush family.

“Omar Albayoumi was paid a monthly stipend as a cooptee of the Saudi General Intelligence Presidency (GIP) via then Ambassador Prince Bandar bin Sultan Alsaud,” said the FBI report, which is quoted in the May 7 filing.

“Allegations of Albayoumi’s involvement with Saudi intelligence were not confirmed at the time of the 9/ 11 Commission Report. The above information confirms these allegations.”

Saudi Arabia, for its part, continues to deny any involvement in 9/11.

Meanwhile, new evidence in recent years has suggested that not only was Albayoumi a Saudi agent working for Bandar—he was also an asset of the CIA, which was, of course, once headed by George H.W. Bush. That information has been coming from the proceedings against 9/11 defendants at Guantanamo Bay.

According to Office of Military Commissions investigator Don Canestraro, at least two FBI agents told him that the CIA had attempted to recruit two of the hijackers as informants. The CIA was directing its recruiting efforts through Bayoumi, according to Canestraro.

Under PIID 0004, Black & Veatch subcontracted Labyrinth Global Health, Inc. The scope of contracted work for Labyrinth Global Health, Inc. in Ukraine included a contracted line item dated 11/12/2019 that occurs before the first ever application and use of the term “COVID-19” by the WHO on 02/11/2020. The 11/12/2019 line item specifically includes “SME MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENTATION AND COVID 19 RESEARCH.” Under the same contract PIID 0004, Black & Veatch also subcontracted Metabiota. Metabiota is directly tied to Hunter and Joe Biden through private equity via Rosemont Seneca, which contributed seeding funds to start Metabiota. Existing analysis and evidence thoroughly documents the Bidens’ invovlement with Metabiota.

EXISTING ANALYSIS POSITIONS “COVID-19” BACK TO 2017

Longstanding analysis and evidence by several years positions the specific term “COVID-19” back to 2017. The 2017 timeline is critical because “COVID-19” never existed until the WHO first established it as the moniker of the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak on the date of 11 Feb 20. Days before Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed special counsel Jack Smith to investigate former President Donald Trump, experts who had been following the Justice Department investigations questioned its necessity. Mr. Smith was appointed on Nov. 18, 2022.

On June 22, U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon will hear arguments on a motion to dismiss the classified documents case against President Trump based on the unlawful appointment of the special counsel. Experts who advanced this legal theory have told The Epoch Times they plan to participate as amici curiae, or friends of the court.

When President Trump appealed his presidential immunity defense to the Supreme Court, former U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese III was quick to submit an amicus brief arguing that before the case could proceed, the high court should settle the matter of whether a private citizen can lawfully be given the authority to impanel a grand jury, investigate, and prosecute a former president.

Mr. Meese, arguing together with constitutional law scholars and professors Steven Calabresi and Gary Lawson, holds the position that Mr. Garland had no authority to grant Mr. Smith such “extraordinary criminal law enforcement power,” as attorneys general lost that power in 1999.

Mr. Meese, incidentally, was himself investigated by an independent counsel when the law was still in effect. The professors are experts in this niche matter, and in 2019 authored a paper arguing that the appointment of special counsel Robert Mueller was unlawful for the same reasons.

The Appointments Clause of the Constitution states that the president has the authority to appoint a number of officers that courts have come to deem “principal” or “superior” officers, whose appointments have to be established by Congress through law, and have their appointments confirmed by the Senate. It also states that Congress can, through law, allow department heads to appoint “inferior” officers.

The correct avenue would have been to appoint a currently serving U.S. Attorney as special counsel, or to appoint an outside special counsel that serves under a U.S. Attorney, Mr. Meese, Mr. Calabresi, and Mr. Lawson argue.

“Smith is the classic ‘emperor with no clothes,’” their Supreme Court brief reads.

Attorneys for President Trump in a second case picked up on this argument, filing a motion in the Southern District of Florida. They argued that Mr. Smith’s appointment violated the Appointments Clause, and there is no permanent funding allocated to a special counsel office, therefore the indictment should be dismissed.

Mr. Meese, Mr. Calabresi, and Mr. Lawson filed another amicus brief in support of the motion in this case, as did other experts.
