The United States Embassy on Tuesday filed two assurances with the British Foreign Office saying it would not seek the death penalty against imprisoned WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange and would allow Assange “the ability to raise and seek to reply upon at trial … the rights and protections given under the First Amendment,” according to the U.S. diplomatic note.

Assange’s wife Stella Assange said the note “makes no undertaking to withdraw the prosecution’s previous assertion that Julian has no First Amendment rights because he is not a U.S citizen. Instead,” she said, “the US has limited itself to blatant weasel words claiming that Julian can ‘seek to raise’ the First Amendment if extradited.”

The note contains a hollow statement, namely, that Assange can try to raise the First Amendment at trial (and at sentencing), but the U.S. Department of Justice can’t guarantee he would get those rights, which is precisely what it must do under British extradition law based on the European Convention on Human Rights. A 4th grade class at a Georgia elementary school was reportedly shown an episode of a children's show in which a dog believed himself to be a cat, and the other playground animals were encouraged to go along with the creature's delusion. Libs of TikTok shared the video to X, saying that it was shown to students.

The group that made the video encourages LGBTQ activism for students, promotes Pride parades and festivals for kids, and has brought their programming to libraries to do live shows for children. The shows were created in 2017 and are apparently still in circulation in schools. That was part of the plan. When they were made, an organizer of the project said that the local Thames Valley District School Board would make use of them.

"Teachers can use them to support the start of a conversation in their classroom and they're a free resource for families," said organizer Paula Jesty. A lack of judges has led to a man having his human trafficking charges thrown out due to delays at Toronto Superior Court for the second time this year.

According to the Toronto Star, Superior Court Justice Michael Code called the federal government’s failure to appoint enough judges an “embarrassment to the administration of justice.”

Marlon Downey’s first case of human trafficking was tossed out in January due to delays and now so has a second case involving a different complainant.

According to the Supreme Court, cases in Superior Court must be heard within 30 months or else be tossed out for violating the accused person’s constitutional right to a trial within a reasonable time.

Other cases which were tossed out due to a shortage of judges include charges of child sexual abuse, gun possession linked to a fatal shooting, assault and sexual assault.

Downey’s second case was tossed by Superior Court Justice Jennifer Penman on Monday, who in her decision said that “the most significant contributing factor to the overall delay in this case was a systemic lack of judicial resources.” Continue...

As Canadian crime stats “skyrocket” year-over-year, the Liberal government’s approach to crime has “demonstrably failed” and is making Canadians less safe, the Conservatives claim.

Rob Moore, the Conservative shadow minister, told True North in an interview Wednesday that Canadians feel less safe than they did before Justin Trudeau.

“When people are feeling less safe, it’s because Canadians are less safe under this government,” he said.

“These (stats) are the result of deliberate actions taken by the government in legislation that have created a catch and release (system), which means that in spite of the best work of police to capture someone, our justice system is releasing those individuals back onto the street to re-offend.”

Since Justin Trudeau took office in 2015, violent crime has increased across Canada by almost 40%, homicides are up by 43% and gang-related murders are up by 108%, according to Stats Canada data from 2022.

Despite Trudeau’s gun bans, violent gun crime is up by 101% since he took office. There has been a year-over-year increase in crime for the last four years.

Foreign nationals deemed to be high-risk by the Canada Border Services Agency may soon be set free due to a lack of space at detention centres.

The CBSA has been retrofitting its Laval, QC detention centre to create more space for high-risk detainees, however prolonged delays may force the agency to release some foreign nationals who are considered both a threat to public safety and a flight risk.

In an internal memo sent out by the National Detention Contingency Task Force on March 20, the task force explains how these delays may surpass its ability to detain dangerous persons as several provincial holding contracts are set to expire.

In June, Ontario and Quebec are scheduled to join seven other provinces in no longer housing high risk detainees facing deportation. Newfoundland and Labrador also announced that it’s ending its contract with the CBSA in 2025.

Provinces are required to give one year’s notice before cancelling their detainee contracts which Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland have already done.

Alberta gave its notice in 2020, giving the Trudeau government ample time to find a solution to this problem.

The Trudeau government was notified by Alberta that it would cease taking immigration detainees in 2020, and the latest provinces also provided the federal government with one year’s notice prior to cancelling their contracts. Continue...

The franchise owners claim they were placed in situations that caused an “irredeemable conflict of interest” after the company Loblaws acquired Shoppers Drug Mart in 2014.

Loblaws allegedly created “risks to patient safety and pose a significant risk of causing patient harm,” according to a statement of claim.

The practices named in the suit include medication reviews, along with vaccinations, illness diagnoses, and prescriptions.

Pharmacist terminated for speaking out

The claim additionally states that Shoppers Drug Mart has terminated contracts with pharmacists who questioned the alleged unsafe practices and “breached key obligations.”

Sivajana Sivapalan, a pharmacist leading the lawsuit, said he was terminated without reason from Shoppers Drug Mart in 2023 after expressing concerns in regards to their business decisions.

Sivapalan has been running their pharmacy for 12 years, working in Beamsville, Ontario, since 2011.

Franchise owners say that despite communicating concern, Loblaws has taken “little to no action” to address the issues.

After a meeting with the Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP) on March 25, they announced a “zero tolerance” for business practices that will prevent the “ability to deliver effective care” to patients.

The OCP claimed to hear from “thousands” of pharmacists concerning unsafe practices involving patients and stated in a news release they found “inappropriate pressure” to conduct medication reviews “deeply troubling.”

“The College will consider every tool available to us to address those concerns,” they added.

Loblaws has spoken out regarding the proposed suit, saying the case has “no merit whatsoever” and the company will “vigorously defend” itself.

A Fraser Institute study found that although global temperatures have increased “moderately” since 1950, there is no evidence to suggest that extreme weather events are on the rise despite the assertions of climate activists and Canada’s government.

The study analyzed data found in the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (UN IPCC) and found that in many cases the frequency and severity of extreme weather events decreased or stayed the same rather than escalating.

The author of the study, Kenneth Green, a senior fellow at the Fraser Institute spoke to True North about his findings.

Green has a doctoral degree in Environmental Science and Engineering from UCLA, and has been studying environmental policy since before receiving his doctorate in 1984.

“When you dig into the actual underlying data on what’s happening, rather than the claims of politicians, you find that extreme weather events are pretty uncertain as to whether we’re seeing extreme weather changing or will see extreme weather changing,” said Green.

Even before the Liberal government introduced its fertilizer emission reduction target, Canadian grain farmers were leading the way in reducing agricultural emissions.

According to the Grain Growers of Canada, between 1997 and 2017, grain farmers surpassed the entire economy in reducing emission intensity. Emission intensity measures a farmer’s emission output relative to the production of a single bushel.

Over that period, grain farmers reduced their emission intensity by 50%, while the entire Canadian economy saw a 36% reduction.

“For decades, grain farmers have been at the forefront of sustainability, making Canada a global leader in producing grain with the lowest emissions possible,” said the advocacy group’s vice-chair, William van Tassel.

“Yet, boosting our competitiveness and commitment to emission reductions demands a significant increase in research and development investments. These investments are essential for overcoming current obstacles and leveraging future opportunities.”

The federal government is taking aim at plastic with a federal registry that will require some companies to regularly report their plastic production and importation.

Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault made the announcement during his kickoff of the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Monday.

Delegates and representatives from around the world are meeting in Ottawa this week to develop an internationally binding agreement on plastic pollution by the end of the year, The United Nations Environment Programme is responsible for organizing the meetings.

A British Columbia NDP MLA is trying to get taxpayers to fund a no-whites-allowed committee to “eliminate systemic racism.”

MLA Niki Sharma has proposed the creation of a “racialized” committee under Bill 23, the Anti-Racism Act. If passed, the committee would create a framework for the province to combat racism.

All members of the Provincial Committee on Anti-Racism, under the bill, would have to be “racialized” and “have expertise in working to eliminate systemic racism and advance racial equity.”

Taxpayers will fund their work and will reimburse the racially exclusive committee for “reasonable” travel and out of pocket expenses.

The committee would have at least two individuals who represent organizations which support “racialized individuals or communities,” two who have “expertise in systems thinking theory and practice,” and two who have experience in the development and delivery of anti-racism training curricula.

If passed, Bill 23 will make the provincial government create an anti-racism action plan in collaboration with this committee which is meant to root out “systemic racism and systemic racism specific to indigenous people,” all while advancing racial equity.

“It is alleged that Mhaouek conspired to facilitate purchases of Libyan oil between prohibited entities and the People’s Republic of China contrary to the United Nations Act,” reads an RCMP statement.

His alleged accomplice, 27-year-old Mahmud Mohamed Elsuwaye, remains a fugitive with Interpol issuing a global alert to track him down.

The RCMP say both men were employed by the International Civil Aviation Organization, a UN agency with its headquarters located in Montreal, when the alleged conspiracy occurred.

But now the Prime Minister said that Saskatchewan residents will get the full rebate, and falsely stated that his party always had that position.

Asked by a reporter on Wednesday, “Why have you now changed your position, and what does this mean for other provinces who also refused to collect?” the Prime Minister responded, “First of all, there’s been no change in position.”

Trudeau further threatened Moe with legal trouble

“I don’t know about you, but having an argument with CRA about not wanting to pay your taxes is not a position I want anyone to be in. Good luck with that Premier,” Trudeau said.

The feds have been irate with Premier Moe for knee-capping their federal carbon tax, with Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland also suggesting in November that it’s possible Premier Moe will get criminally charged.

“What can the federal government do to prevent [Moe] from acting unilaterally?” a reporter asked Freeland. “Will he, will the province, will anyone, incur penalties? Will there be fees? Or perhaps even jail time?” a reporter asked Freeland.

Freeland responded, “The federal government expects everyone in Canada to obey the law. Canada is a country of good peace, order, and good government. I think that is something all Canadians believe in. That’s something we expect.”

Cacao trees in West Africa, where 50% of the world’s chocolate originates, are currently under threat by a virus that may jeopardize the global supply of chocolate.

In a new scientific study, researchers from the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana and the University of Kansas, Prairie View A&M, reported that the cacao swollen shoot virus disease (CSSVD), caused by tiny insects called mealybugs, has endangered cacao trees in the Ivory Coast and Ghana.

Harvests in the Ivory Coast and Ghana have been cut by 15% to 50% since the virus has wreaked havoc on cocoa trees.

To combat the pesky virus, researcher Chen-Charpentier from the University of Kansas, Prairie View A&M, has advocated for vaccinating cocoa trees and spreading them out from one another.

The Canadian Armed Forces will destroy 11,000 of its Second World War-era pistols after receiving new 9-mm pistols to replace its outdated weaponry.

After receiving the final delivery of the new pistols as part of a $19.4 million project, the old pistols will be sent to supply depots in Alberta and Quebec for disposal, which will be carried out before the end of the year.

The Browning Hi-Power pistols, which has been used by CAF members for decades, were becoming increasingly difficult to find replacement parts for.

Distribution of the newly purchased Sig Sauer P320 to units is already underway.

“The pistols have not yet been destroyed,” said National Defence spokesperson Cheryl Forrest in an email to the Ottawa Citizen. “We anticipate the pistols will be disposed of by the end of 2024.”

According to Forrest, about 150 Browning Hi-Power handguns will be preserved for distribution to museums throughout Canada, however, none have been shipped out yet.

Canada is currently on its way to taking first place for having the most unaffordable housing market on Earth.

According to data from the OECD, which tracks housing prices amongst developed nations across the globe, Canada currently has the second highest housing price-to-income ratio in the world, second only to Portugal, which is experiencing an unusual bubble that has already hit a ceiling and is expected to cool over the coming months.

In other words, Canada is poised to officially become the most unaffordable place on Earth in terms of housing over the coming months based on Canadians’ income levels and ability to afford rent, mortgages, etc. But really, it already is the worst.

Alberta Minister of Public Safety Mike Ellis says the RCMP is ‘stretched thin’, ‘on the brink’ of collapse, and increasingly unable to keep Albertans safe.

Following news from the Management Advisory Board that the federal police force is “stretched thin” in the province, Ellis expressed his deep concerns, saying that it’s time for Alberta to have an independent provincial police agency to address the gaps left by Ottawa.

“Ottawa is making Canadians and Albertans less safe through its failure to adequately support policing services. That’s why Alberta’s government is working on several fronts to enhance the current policing model to ensure it’s meeting the needs of our communities,” Ellis wrote in a statement.

“This includes introducing the Public Safety Statutes Amendment Act, 2024 to help augment provincial policing,” Ellis continued. “If passed, the tabled legislation will support policing efforts by enabling the creation of an independent police agency that would be able to carry out police-like functions currently performed by Alberta’s sheriffs.”

An activist who has become a recognizable face at some of Canada’s most heated protests was among several arrested on hate-motivated and other charges related to an anti-Israel protest.

Deana Sherif, 47, faces eight charges and was denied bail after allegedly assaulting a police officer and two others and harassing people as they left a religious service in what police have called a hate-motivated incident.

When asked if the Jewish community was targeted and if the religious service was at a synagogue, a spokesperson from the Ottawa Police Service told True North they “will not identify the victims so as not to further victimize.”

Sherif was arrested after a series of protest-related incidents on Apr. 15, in the wake of Iran’s attack on Israel.

She is charged with assaulting a police officer with the intent to prevent an arrest, obstructing a peace officer in the execution of their duty, two counts of assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, two counts of hate-motivated harassment, and threatening behaviour and intimidation. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told his Liberal MPs in a caucus meeting that they should not be expecting much improvement in the public’s support for his party.

This comes after reports circulated that the Prime Minister’s Office had set an internal goal to shave the Conservatives’ lead in the polls by five points every six months, aiming to hit their first goal deadline by July.

The Liberal Party has not been faring well in recent public opinion polls, as the Conservatives under their leader Pierre Poilievre has seen a massive uptick in support at the expense of the Liberals.

The federal government’s payment program for the vaccine-injured is getting a $36 million top up from the feds, but accessing that money is proving difficult.

Of the 2,233 claims made to the Vaccine Injury Support Program, just 138 – a little over 6% – have been approved by the medical review board for the program, which has paid out $11.2 million so far.

The Liberals have allocated an additional $36 million in the recent budget to the Vaccine Injury Support Program, over the next two years.

Oxaro administers the Vaccine Injury Support Program for the feds for all provinces and territories, except Quebec, which has its own program.

Ross Wightman, who was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre system after receiving a COVID vaccine, was one of the recipients, getting a one-time payout of around $250,000, the maximum offered by the program. He also receives $90,000 annually in income replacement.

“I don’t know if there’s even an amount that would ease the pain,” said Wightman.

Despite being poked, prodded, and tested for months, doctors were fearful of the consequences they might face from superiors if they officially declared that the vaccines caused Wightman’s injuries. Continue...

A Trudeau-appointed senator known for repeating communist China’s talking points recently said during a Carleton University lecture that Canada shouldn’t be involved in defence exercises along the Taiwan Strait and should forge further ties with countries like China.

During the Vickers-Verduyn Lecture in Canadian Studies earlier this month, Sen. Yuen Pau Woo elaborated on his views on China.

This statement comes in the wake of the Canadian Navy’s joint transit with the American Navy last year, an action that attracted close scrutiny from Chinese military forces.

“We are, as you know, in a geopolitical conflict primarily between the U.S. and China. There are certain actions the U.S. is taking with respect to China that make sense and that we might well want to follow,” said Woo.

“However, there are other actions that do not align with our national interest. If we start considering our national interests, for instance, I’m not sure we should be sailing through the Taiwan Strait. I don’t think that’s necessarily in our national interests.”

The senator’s comments echo China’s official line – that Canada has no business in the Taiwan Strait.

Woo also expressed dislike for trade prohibitions as well as bans on research collaborations between Canadian universities and Chinese institutions.
