What's /philosophy/'s opinion on stoicism? Is it good the way it is, or is it bad?

It's neither good nor bad. These are judgments made by people without all the facts.

stoicism is a very good guideline for cultivating virtue and masculinity. It does not provide a complete worldview or religion, but it is very good for regulating your actions.

I think the more Stoicists shill discussion of their ideology the more prone I am to being annoyed and disliking it.

Now please stop, I'm only bumping this thread so other Stoicists can see this PSA.

It's cynicism for betas.

Seriously -- check out the Cynic philosophy -- it preaches many of the same virtues but has solid praxis backing them.

If you become annoyed it's because you lack self-control.

stoicism sounds a lot like apathy to me tbh. and, imo, apathy is like death, in some ways. while i see how emotions can hinder you, but in the end, you need emotions to be motivated. if apathy prevents you from doing something, it's not helping you.

i might have misunderstood stoicism, so pls correct me or point me to a book or smth. pls be gentle, i have only recently started to get interested in philosophy.

That you liken ataraxia to death only shows that you understand neither. And most importantly, that you do not know neither the meaning of 'emotion' nor the consequences that follow from their existence.

Stoicism in like apathy only in the way you see emotions. Stoicism does not supposedly disable emotions, it puts them behind logic thought. Being a stoicist means acting after thinking, not acting after feeling.

For example: stoicist can and will do thing A because he has calculated that it will be good for him/someone/something, and feel joy afterwards. Even if his emotion before doing it told him to "Naaa, not worth it".

What?

Good and bad are not the same as Good and Evil. I was referring to judgments based on personal opinion.

Things being Good(R) and Bad(R) are not the same as being good or bad.

Could not agree more. Sometimes it feels so good to do Bad(R) things.
