this, we all know otters HATE sunlight and being outdoors and swimming in their natural environment. A sink in a 3x3m flat is much better than a giant river.

Bingo is scared of the bathtub he wouldn't dare swim in a river. And he hates fish. He refuses to eat anything but kibble and jerky, neither of which would be available to him in the wild.

That's because he was stolen from his mommy and never learned how to be an otter.

I hate it when people complain about space that pets have. Humans are supposed to live in great open spaces too but guess what, I'm stuck in this fucking shoebox apartment. I deal with it, animals can deal too. At least they get fed and sheltered for free.

An animal abused to the point of being unable to live unassisted. How sad.

Sure these particular animals might seem content as pets since it's the only life they know, but it's still not a good situation. When idiots see these videos and think "wow, I'm gonna get one!" but don't know how to feed and take care of an otter and lack the kind of space it needs, they end up hurting the animal and hurting themselves.

The fact is that otters are not pets, they are not domestic, they are wild animals and will behave as wild animals do. So these kinds of videos promote and encourage negative things.

You aren't, you're free to leave whenever you want. You're not being forced to stay in an otter's holt.

>You aren't, you're free to leave whenever you want.

That is debatable, but even if true, I have unfortunately forgotten how to survive and adapt in my natural environment, much like the pet otters.

You're in your natural environment, humans have evolved to live this way.

Also, nobody is stopping you from going outside.

I decided to look for otter videos on YouTube. I accidentally clicked a video of otters kept as pets. I immediately flagged the video. Does it even help though? YouTube seems to be full of these.

The Japanese otter was declared extinct (although there still seems to be some unconfirmed evidence to the contrary) and now the Japanese exotic pet industry supports poaching of Asian small clawed otters. This is so messed up.

You know what. Maybe people need to breed more albino otters. Since they look different from their wild form this may actually encourage more breeding instead of poaching. However, I think it's still important that people get educated about these animals and only adopt them if they can take proper care of them and are willing to put up with the difficulties of keeping exotic pets.

It seems the Japanese (and other East Asians who participate in this, in general) just see these animals as cute things rather than actual living creatures. They pretend to like them, but don't really care about them. Yeah it's messed up, I flag these videos/posts every time I see them.

>>566

If you want a mustelid as a pet, just get a ferret. They were already domesticated 2500 years ago for the purpose of giving people cute mustelid pets. Breeding otters as pets will likely just result in totally-not-ferrets, and I think breeding them in captivity in the first place is questionable since it can take many generations for them to really be tamed, if at all.

Flagging doesn't really do anything, Youtube can remove the video but they can't remove the otter. At most it prevents more people from being encouraged by it. But they ignore most of the reports anyway.
