You are otterly loved!
World Otter Day 2020
The special day is only three months away! This year's World Otter Day will be on May 27th.
Like last year, we're gonna celebrate with a nice otter-themed stream at cytu.be/r/ottercine. Last year we watched Ring of Bright Water and Tarka the Otter, this year is still open to suggestions. Otter 501 seems like a decent film, it's about a baby sea otter being rescued.
Have you got anything planned yet, otters?
Being an otter fan is not for everyone; you must have a certain level of intelligence and perfomance level of the brain; otter fans have heightened logical thinking and analysis skills which allows them to sea otters as the noble creatures that they are.
The soul of the otter fan is a happy soul, for in contrast to the plebeian soul it is nourished by the love of otters. Hence it enjoys a closer connection to God, being ever thankful to the wise Creator for giving us the beautiful gift of otters.
Plebeians are not likely to become otter fans, as they simply do not have the capacity to handle otters in their brains. If you have passed the test and find yourself here, as one of us: Congratulations. It is certainly a great privilege to be here and to be able to love otters this much.
RIP Otto
PSA: Otters have taste. Please do not feed them. Otters only eat fresh fish from clean waters. They don't eat french fries, donuts or noodles. If you give them human food, you will kill them. If you have to feed them, give them otter food. Not dog food. Not cat food. Not fast food. Otter food. That's what they like, because they are Otters.
Future of Otters
What do you think the future will hold for the otter? Short-term and long term?
Should Man go extinct, I believe they'll be able to replace us.
They can stand upright, have forward-facing eyes, and are able to use tools.
Some of them (smooth-coated, giant etc) live and hunt in groups where they're able to communicate and coordinate with each other.
Perhaps they'll go through the same kind of development that primates did when they became humans. Perhaps they'll develop better communication skills, maybe even a sort of language comparable to that of dolphins. Maybe they'll make more complicated tools, maybe even discover fire. I'd like to believe that could happen.
Of course, that's assuming we don't kill them all before that happens.
Where do otter fans live?
I was just wondering where you guys live. I live in the Netherlands and I went to Blanckendaell zoo near Tuitjenhorn, Noord-Holland, on World Otter Day, which is about a 1 hour bicycle ride from my home. I took a lot of pictures of the Asian small-clawed otters and the meerkats, however I think it would be nice to go together with another otter fan some day.
AquaZoo in Leeuwarden is also really nice. I went there with family a couple of years ago and there were giant otters.
If anybody else here lives in or near the Netherlands and/or knows other zoos with otters in or near the Netherlands, I'd love to know about it. This September I'm going to Japan so if anybody lives there or has recommendations, please, tell me too.
What do you people think about the whole fisheries conflict?
Anglers are saying otters are destroying river ecosystems. They say they were released irresponsibly and without regard for the environment. And fishery owners have been victimised by the otter because of killing all their fish. (They don't eat it they just kill it). Anglers have launched a petition to the UK government to control the otter population but it was rejected. I want to hear your opinion and what you think should be done.
From 0-10, how much do you love otters?
>0: I am indifferent to otters
>1-3: I have a mild interest in otters
>4-6: I'm into otters
>7-9: I really love otters
>10: Otters are the meaning of my life and the source of my strength. There is nothing in the world that I love more than otters. I could not go on without otters. I am addicted to and obsessed with otters
Films and books thread
What's your favourite otter-related films, books, etc.?
There's no better way to begin a thread like this than to mention Gavin Maxwell's masterpiece Ring of Bright Water, which was published in 1960 and picturised 9 years later, detailing his life with otters on the coast of Scotland.
MEDIA IS AN EXPRESSION OF HUMAN THOUGHT AND CULTURE; ALL FORMS OF MEDIA HAVE BEGUN TO INCORPORATE OR FEATURE OTTERS IN MANY CONTEXTS; THIS TREND WILL GROW AND CONTINUE FOR A LONG TIME.
Progress is being made, everyone is currently talking about Otters they are showing up and being referenced in games movies TV shows books comics ads and social media regardless of context, popular attention and opinion is slowly shifting toward Otters and they are permeating every area of popular culture. We will see more and more of this in the coming time, we finally got the train rolling, more people are becoming aware of Otters as they enter the collective consciousness.

Funny thing, I have a personal game project that needed to have an otter character.
I haven't had much luck looking great refs before I stumbled on this board by accident.
I've been saving some cool pics on this board, now I have a decent library to draw from for the design. Thanks Anons!
Every time I am reminded of the existence of Otters, I am overcome by an intense feeling of bliss; I might be having stress and pain in life but once i begin to remember Otters it all goes away. Otters are like a drug. I can not get enough of them. They - their appearance, their behaviour - certainly have a powerful aura. Each time that I am reminded of the existence of Otters, a wave of blissful feeling washes over me; as much pain and stress as I suffer in life it all goes away as soon as I begin to think of Otters. Putting your mind to Otters is certainly addictive. But all must find a way to persevere in the pains of daily life.
The feeling goes stronger every time I read about Otters, or look at their images, or even see one in reality. It does not fade or go away, unless if I do not think about Otters for a while. Please can someone tell me if they know what i'm talking about. What is it about these animals? Why are they so powerful?
We are exalted by otters as they are a beautiful gift that God has given to us. For God created otters with the qualities of goodness, wisdom, and strength. What does the law of God teach us about the otter? Indeed, it is the source of our happiness and joy. But the most important point it lays down is that the otter doesn't have a mind of its own and that God works through it. The otter doesn't go on about his thoughts and feelings only, which makes it very similar to an angel. God wants his thoughts and feelings to reflect in them. This is why they are called "spiritual beings". When you consider the otter as a rational creature, you find he has no choice but to obey God's will. Otters are so adaptable, that they can move through water, land, air, and even space.
Our pride and happiness is that we fulfill our divine duty of protecting otters. We are loyal to otters and serve them. They are cherished creatures in our hearts.
>"Do you love otters?" he asked.
>"Yes sir," I answered, "with all my heart."
>"If there's one thing we've grown to really like, it's otters."
>"We love otters, we love otters."
I enjoy otters.
<"I don't know what's going on in your head", my mother said angrily, "All you ever talk about is otters! It's as if you're obsessed! All day long, it's always just otters, otters, otters!"
<"Well fine, I am obsessed! I just love them!", I yelled back.
<"Well yeah, but I have many other things to do than talk about them today". My mother put me in a daze with a question. "Why do you even like otters?"
<The whole time, I was asking questions, but I had no answer. All I could feel now was something terrible. It was terrible. I don't know what was going on inside my head, but it was just as bad. It was as if I was seeing ghosts all day. One day, I was playing in my room. At my feet were about 20 otters that were all about 4 years old. All I could see was myself. My father was on his way there just then and I was holding my hands up there to get the otters closer to me.
<"What are you doing!", I yelled.
"I love otters and am ready to give everything for them", I proudly proclaimed. It was true, I really had a deep love for otters. The experience of seeing them running in the water during the hunt was like an exhilarating sensation for me. I was a little intimidated, but there was nothing I could do. This was our first encounter with otters, so I understood that their presence was a bit strange for me. But I didn't care, as it was our first day together and I wanted to take all that we could find.
Since we first came up this way we made sure to check to make sure it was safe to go swimming with the otters. We had a very good time and our eyes quickly became accustomed to the bright colored lures, which helped the lures to feel more comfortable. With no signs of aggression on us, we had a great time. I was so happy when one of The otters walked up next to me with
>I don't know what the hell is wrong with my son. The other kids are outside playing and he's just in his room by himself all day reading about otters. I tried asking him why he's so damn obsessed with otters but all he keeps telling me is that they're my favorite animals."
>The parents of the children took the news of their child being diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders with a grain of salt. "We have no idea why he's suddenly obsessed with these little critters. My first instinct would've been to let him grow up," said Tanya and Mike, both 27. "He's never read about them, and he wasn't particularly interested in anything as a child. It's odd that he'd become obsessed with them but we can live with it I guess."
In May of 2019 we will know who are the good and bad guys in Asia.
>India, Bangladesh, and the Philippines have submitted proposals to ban all international commercial trade in two species of otter in South and Southeast Asia: The Asian small-clawed otter and the smooth-coated otter. Final decisions on the proposals will be made in May in Colombo, Sri Lanka during the 18th Conference of the Parties (COP18) to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
https://www.nrdc.org/experts/paul-todd/asian-countries-propose-bans-commercial-trade-otters
I hope they will publish who votes against this proposal, and thus for the prolonged suffering and endangerment of otters. There can be no peace with them
Otters can kill.
Please enjoy the sea otters from the safe viewing distance of 50 yards (150 feet) on land and 100 yards (300 feet) on water per the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. And please leave handling of sick or dead marine wildlife to trained personnel.
Scientists have discovered evidence of the same influenza virus (H1N1) in sea otters living off the coast of Washington State that caused the 2009 swine flu pandemic in humans.
Some important zoonotic organisms that are known to infect sea otters include the single-celled parasite Toxoplasma gondii, the marine Brucella bacteria and the fungus Coccidioides immitis. C. immitis infection causes the disease “Valley Fever” in humans.
River otters can contract the rabies virus when they are attacked by a rabid predator or by another otter who contracted the disease and become aggressive as a result. River otters have been documented as both having rabies and spreading rabies in the United States.
Otter Movie Night
Hello friends, as you know World Otter Day is just two weeks away on May 29th.
I decided we should do something special, so why not enjoy a nice evening together watching stuff about otters?
The stream will be at https://cytu.be/r/ottercine on May 29th at 22:00 CET.
We can watch either Tarka the Otter, Ring of Bright Water, or both.
If you have videos, please suggest them ITT.
Otter Extremism
The Otters' body is perfectly adapted to natural life around rivers and lakes – so long as they remain free of intrusion by " human civilisation", which dumps poison and trash into rivers and builds soulless concrete structures around natural waterways so that no life can thrive. These animals also have the world's thickest fur with 140 000 hairs on their body per square inch. Hence they've also been widely hunted for their precious, soft and warm fur, further contributing to their extinction.
Even though over time, the number of Otters in Europe has been slowly recovering, there is still much to be done. Humans, especially f*shermen, in their selfish quest for more money or even just for fun, are deliberately trapping and killing endangered otters. In the past 100 years, their numbers have rapidly fallen and what was once a common sight across the world, is now a rare and endagered species. All this even while world governments and international organisations have been trying to enforce measures to protect their habitat.
Clearly, those efforts from politicans and volunteers hasn't been enough. More action is required right now if we ever want to save this gift of nature. This is why the world needs Otter Extremism. It's time to get extreme about saving the otter. About preventing intrusion into his habitat, and giving him enough natural space to survive. This world is big enough. I hope you are, too.
The truth is that if the Otter disappeared from this planet, we would have lost another of the earth's fascinating species. If the otter is wiped out at the hands of us humans, then how shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers?
