Weasels and Otters are in the same family, but genetically divergent by 20.8 million years. OneZoom has a good visualization of this.

Unfortunately OneZoom isn't very up to date. They still show skunks as part of the weasel family. Opentree and Wikipedia are more accurate.

Weasels and otters diverged at around 11.6 Ma.

Otters stink too though. Well actually, ferrets don't smell like shit, they smell musky. I like their smell.

Most members of the weasel family have well developed scent glands which produces a musky smell. The only exception is the sea otter. I guess it depends on the person whether they like the smell or not. In the Netherlands both otters and polecats are proverbially known as smelly animals.

Ferrets won't stink if you feed 'em right, or so they say.

I never had a ferret but if I get a pet, it's gonna be a ferret.

My favourite non-otter mustelids would have to be badgers. Everything about them is just perfect.
