Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden’s campaign said Wednesday it will host a “training on resiliency” with failed 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Clinton, who lost to President Trump due to narrow Rust Belt defeats, will headline the public event at 7 p.m. Thursday.

>>“Women for Biden will host a national training on resiliency in the face of multiple national crises and the recent loss of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg,” the Biden campaign said.

>>“This training will feature Hillary Rodham Clinton and Planned Parenthood Action Fund President Alexis McGill Johnson, who will discuss what’s at stake for women and how we energize and mobilize in the final weeks of the campaign.”

Trump often derides Clinton as an example of an embittered Democrat who cannot accept the 2016 election results.

Trump said during a recent campaign trip to Minnesota that Clinton is “a loser.”

“She’s a loser, but not a gracious one,” Trump said.

>>Clinton frequently criticizes Trump. She said in July that “we have to be ready” for the possibility that Trump loses to Biden and refuses to leave office.

The Biden campaign noted that Clinton will speak as Trump prepares to unveil on Saturday his nominee to replace Ginsburg, a liberal icon.

>>“Women across the country are currently bearing the brunt of the COVID-19 crisis, filling essential roles in the economy and balancing work and family responsibilities,” the campaign said.

>>“Americans have long been inspired by Justice Ginsburg and her work advancing equality and opportunity, and her passing has left many feeling a greatPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea on Thursday accused North Korea of firing at a South Korean government official and burning his body and urged the North to punish those responsible.

The man was a government official who disappeared Monday from a South Korean ship that was checking on potential unauthorized fishing near the inter-Korean sea boundary where several inter-Korean naval skirmishes and deadly attacks blamed on North Korea have occurred.

The South Korean Defense Ministry said the missing official was on North Korean shores on Tuesday afternoon. But it’s still unclear how he ended up in the North, and the updated information the ministry released Thursday did not say how he died.

The man’s disappearance and death, however, are expected to deepen already-strained ties between the rivals.

The Defense Ministry said in the statement that it concluded the North committed “this atrocious act” based on an analysis of various intelligence and that South Korea strongly condemned the North’s acts.

North Korea didn’t immediately respond to the South Korean announcement.

>>Ties between the two Koreas remain frosty amid a deadlock in nuclear talks between North Korea and the United States. In June, North Korea blew up an inter-Korean liaison office on its territory to protest South Korean civilian leafleting campaign against the North.

>>At the height of their Cold War rivalry, North Korea often forcibly towed South Korean fishing boats operating near the sea boundary into its waters, holding some of those on board and returning others. No such incidents have been reported in recent times.

Defections of South Koreans to North Korea are highly unusual. More than 30,000 North Koreans have fled to South Korea in the past 20 yearPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

Gov. Kate Brown held a briefing today to discuss the state’s wildfires.

The briefing came as one of two large fires burning in Marion County became the first statewide to surpass 200,000 acres this year. The Lionshead fire west of Warm Springs is 15% contained.

At the same time, the Beachie Creek fire east of Salem has burned through 192,805 acres and is 46% contained.

Brown was joined by State Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple; Doug Grafe, chief of fire protection at the Oregon Department of Forestry; state Emergency Management Director Andrew Phelps; Adjutant General Michael Stencel; and Gabriela Goldfarb, the Oregon Health Authority’s environmental public health manager.

President Donald Trump was asked Wednesday whether he will commit to a peaceful transfer of power should he lose this fall to Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. The president declined to do so.

"Well, we’re going to have to see what happens," Trump said. "You know that I’ve been complaining very strongly about the ballots and the ballots are a disaster."

Dr. Anthony Fauci and Sen. Rand Paul had a heated exchange Wednesday over the coronavirus and herd immunity.

The exchange occurred Wednesday between the infectious disease expert and Kentucky Republican senator during a hearing in the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.

Paul, who has long been a critic of Fauci’s response to COVID-19, criticized Fauci for praising the job New York City has done in getting its coronavirus numbers down.

“No, you’ve misconstrued that, senator, and you’ve done that repetitively in the past,” Fauci quipped back at Paul.

Emotions ran high here Wednesday as protesters took to the streets and at least one police officer was shot, following a day that brought angry response to a prosecutor's decision to charge only one of the officers involved in the Breonna Taylor shooting.

A Louisville Metro Police officer was shot in downtown Louisville Wednesday night, a department spokesman confirmed. But details were sketchy and it's unclear why the officer was shot.

An FBI SWAT team is on the scene to help with the officer shot.

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden questioned President Trump’s refusal to commit to a peaceful transfer of power on Wednesday.

Asked about the president’s remarks during his briefing, Biden told reporters “what country are we in?”

“I'm being facetious. I said what country are we in? Look, he says the most irrational things. I don't know what to say,” Biden added, according to a pool report.

During a White House briefing, Trump refused to commit to a peaceful transition of power should he lose the November election, instead once again sowing doubt about the security of mail-in ballots.

President Trump abruptly exited his news conference Wednesday at the White House, saying he had an “emergency” phone call as reporters continued to press him with questions on the Breonna Taylor case.

"I have to leave for an emergency phone call," Trump said before leaving the briefing. "I'll be back. I'll see you tomorrow"

Trump earlier praised Kentucky’s Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear for calling in the National Guard as the state braced for unrest following the grand jury decision in the Breonna Taylor case.

“I will be speaking to the governor, we have a call scheduled,” Trump said. “I understand he's called up the National Guard. That's a good thing. It’ll all work out.”

More than 300 elephants in the southern African country Botswana have died as a result of ingesting toxic blue-green algae, officials said Monday.

Blue-green algae, also called cyanobacteria, produces a neurotoxin that has been found in the Okavango Delta wetland, where elephant carcasses began turning up in May, NBC News reported.

The number of dead elephants has risen from 281, reported in July, to 330 as of the announcement this week.

>>“We have many questions still to be answered such as why the elephants only (died) and why that area only," said Mmadi Reuben, principal veterinary officer at Botswana’s Department of Wildlife and National Parks. "We have a number of hypotheses we are investigating.”

In neighboring Zimbabwe, another 20 elephant carcasses were discovered, also believed to have succumbed to a bacterial infection.

>>A 2019 study using satellite imagery showed the frequency and size of blue-green algal blooms is increasing around the world in lakes with average temperatures that have gone up over time due to climate change. Algal blooms can be a normal occurrence when lake water warms in summer months, but in certain conditions it creates large “dead zones” which can last for months and suffocate wildlife.

Blue-green algae blooms are regularly reported in lakes in Upstate New York, including recently in Skaneateles and Owasco Lakes. Last year dozens of blooms were reported everywhere from Long Island to Western N.Y. However, the species of cynobacteria blamed for elephant deaths in Botswana was not specified, and it is unclear whether it is the same as the algal blooms that seasonally appear in some New York lakes.

China allegedly pushed over half a million rural Tibetans into forced labor camps in the first seven months of 2020, mirroring a its concentration camps for Uyghurs in western Xinjiang.

A new study published on Tuesday by the Jamestown Foundation details how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) forced over 500,000 Tibetans into military-style camps designed to train “rural surplus laborers” into industrial workers in the first half of this year. After completing their so-called “vocational training,” which includes political indoctrination, the Tibetans were transferred to work in factories across China, according to government quotas.

Chinese officials regularly use the term “vocational training” to refer to concentration camps, particularly those in Xinjiang where Uyghurs and other Muslim ethnic minorities face indoctrination, torture, and slavery. Estimates by the U.S. government suggest China has imprisoned as many as three million people in over 1,000 Xinjiang concentration camps in the past three years.

Reuters said on Tuesday that it reviewed “over a hundred state media reports, policy documents from government bureaus in Tibet and procurement requests released between 2016-2020” corroborating the study’s findings.

An official notice posted to the website of Tibet’s regional government website in August reveals that, of the 500,000 Tibetans pushed into the training camps in the first half of this year, “50,000 have been transferred into jobs within Tibet, and several thousand have been sent to other parts of China.”

China has occupied Tibet since 1950, when Chinese troops seized control of the region in what Beijing described as a “peaceful liberation.” Tibet has since become one of China’s most restricted regions.

The CCP’s training camp model has been previously used in its western Xinjiang territory to detain an estimated one million Muslim UyghursPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

Johnson & Johnson began its final round of testing for its COVID-19 vaccine Wednesday.

The study is one of the most expansive to occur so far, involving 60,000 volunteers across the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Mexico and South Africa, the Associated Press reported. The vaccine is the latest to begin its final testing phase, joining candidates developed by Moderna and Pfizer, and is the only vaccine that would be administered as a single dose.

“We want to do everything we can without sacrificing safety or efficacy… to make sure that we end up with vaccines that are going to save lives,” Director of the National Institutes of Health Dr. Francis Collins said to reporters, according to AP.

President Donald Trump has floated the possibility of a vaccine before Election Day, despite health officials in his administration saying that a vaccine is unlikely to be completed and distributed before mid-2021.

“Big news. Numerous great companies are seeing fantastic results. The FDA must move quickly!” he tweeted Wednesday morning in reaction to Johnson and Johnson’s announcement.

A Tuesday poll showed that 61% of Americans would not take any vaccine once first available, an eight-point drop since August.

Ignoring calls for an end to his 26-year grip on power, President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus was sworn in for a sixth term on Wednesday after an election that the opposition and several foreign governments say was rigged.

The ceremony would normally have been publicised as a major state occasion but was instead held without warning following Lukashenko’s claim of a landslide victory in the Aug. 9 election.

The opposition, which has staged more than six weeks of mass protests demanding his resignation, denounced the inauguration as illegitimate and called for more demonstrations on Wednesday evening.

The United States and European Union are drawing up sanctions against officials involved in the election and a subsequent crackdown by the security forces.

The official news agency Belta said Lukashenko placed his right hand on a copy of the constitution and swore the oath of office at a ceremony attended by several hundred people.

The 66-year-old leader said the country needed safety and consensus “on the brink of a global crisis”, an apparent reference to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I cannot, I have no right to abandon the Belarusians,” he said.

Protesters carrying red-and-white opposition flags began gathering in small groups in the capital, including outside at least three universities, local media footage showed. Calls circulated on social media for mass protests for the evening.

Donald Trump will face Joe Biden within days for the first of three presidential debates, and some of the president’s supporters are already bracing for a humiliating loss.

White House allies, Republican donors and some of Trump’s closest advisers worry that a recent, frenzied push by his top lieutenants to portray Biden as a seasoned debater — with the goal of raising expectations for the Democratic presidential nominee — is too late and too disingenuous to have an impact when the two meet on the debate stage next Tuesday.

The Senate Homeland Security and Finance Committees on Wednesday released an interim report on their monthslong joint investigation into Hunter Biden’s role on the board of Ukrainian natural gas firm Burisma Holdings and his alleged “extensive and complex financial transactions.”

Homeland Security Committee Chairman Ron Johnson, R-Wis., and Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said their investigation has “faced many obstacles” from Democrats on their committees and that executive agencies “failed to comply with document requests.”

The chairmen added that “there remains much work to be done” in their probe. Hunter Biden is the son of the Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. His work background played a starring role in the Trump impeachment efforts earlier this year. He and his father have denied any wrongdoing related to his work.

>>The 87-page report stated that Obama administration officials “knew” that Hunter Biden’s position on the board of Burisma was “problematic” and that it interfered “in the efficient execution of policy with respect to Ukraine.”

>>“This investigation has illustrated the extent to which officials within the Obama administration ignored the glaring warning signs when the vice president’s son joined the board of a company owned by a corrupt Ukrainian oligarch,” the report’s executive summary stated.

Hunter Biden joined Burisma in April 2014 and, at the time, reportedly connected the firm with consulting form Blue Star Strategies to help the natural gas company fight corruption charges in Ukraine. During the time Biden was on the board the company’s board, then-Vice President Joe Biden was running U.S.-Ukraine relations and policy for the Obama administration.
