A man carrying a “Liberate Hong Kong” sign as he drove a motorcycle into police at a protest against the territory’s Chinese rulers became on Friday the first person charged with inciting separatism and terrorism under a new security law.

Beijing imposed the legislation on the former British colony earlier this week despite protests from Hong Kongers and Western nations, setting China’s freest city and a major financial hub on a more authoritarian track.

Critics say the law - which punishes crimes of secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces with up to life in prison - is aimed at crushing dissent and a long-running campaign for greater democracy.

Police say 23-year-old Tong Ying-kit rammed and injured some officers at an illegal protest on Wednesday. A video online showed a motorbike knocking over several officers on a narrow street before the driver falls over and is arrested.

Tong, who was hospitalised after the incident, was charged less than 24 hours after the city government said the slogan he was carrying - “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times” - connotes separatism or subversion under the new law.

The rallying cry appears on placards, T-shirts, and post-it notes stuck to walls around Hong Kong.

Britain will end coronavirus quarantines for people arriving in England from more than 50 countries, including Germany, France, Spain and Italy - but not the United States - the government said on Friday.

The move, effective July 10, clears the way for millions of British tourists to take summer holidays without worrying about being quarantined when they return. Those arriving from higher risk countries will still have to self-quarantine for 14 days under a rule which has angered airlines and travel companies.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government had debated for days how to ease the quarantine rules. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, which set their own health policies within the United Kingdom, have not announced plans to lift the measures.

“Today marks the next step in carefully reopening our great nation,” Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said.

As the spread of the novel coronavirus slows in Europe, countries are reopening travel after more than three months of lockdown.

By John McWhorter

https://reason.com/people/john-mcwhorter/

Over the past several years, a social justice philosophy has arisen that is less a political program than a religion in all but name. Where Christianity calls for people to display their moral worth through faith in Jesus, modern Third-Wave Antiracism (henceforth TWA) calls for people to display their moral worth through opposition to racism. In the wake of the murder of George Floyd, this vision has increasingly been expressed through procedures, routines, and phraseology directly patterned on Abrahamic religion.

America certainly has work to do on race. For one, while racism does not explain why cops kill more black than white people—poverty makes all people more likely to be killed by the cops, hundreds of poor whites are killed annually, but more black people are poor—they harass and abuse black people more than white people, and the real-life impact of this is in its way just as pernicious as the disparity in killings would be. If the tension between black people and the cops were resolved, America's race problem would quickly begin dissolving faster than it ever has. But making this happen will require work, as will ending the war on drugs, improving educational opportunities for all disadvantaged black children, and other efforts such as steering more black teenagers to vocational programs training them for solid careers without four years of college.

These are real things, upon which we must behold scenes like in Bethesda, where protesters kneeled on the pavement in droves, chanting allegiance with upraised hands to a series of anti-white privilege tenets incanted by what a naïve anthropologist would recognize as a flock's pastor. On a similar occasion, white protesters bowed down in front of black people standing in attendance. In Cary, North Carolina, whites washed black protesters' feet as a symbol of subservience and sympathy. Elsewhere, when a group of white activists painted whip scars upon themselves in sympathy with black America's past, many black protesters found it a bit much.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said Wednesday that public protests are likely causing the number of citywide coronavirus cases to spike, just two days after claiming there wasn't "any conclusive evidence" showing a connection between the two.

Garcetti, a Democrat, was speaking at a press conference concerning the recent Black Lives Matter protests in Los Angeles when he was asked if the demonstrations were contributing to the spread of COVID-19.

He claimed he'd consulted with Dr. Barbara Ferrer, LA County's director of public health, and determined the protests were in fact contributing to the spread of the virus.

“I talked again with Dr. Ferrer about that this morning. She does think some of the spread did come from our protests," he said. "It’s not the act of protesting – that’s a great and American thing to do no matter what your opinion is… but protesting without maintaining physical distancing, without wearing your mask, without having sanitizer – we just have to be smart. Whether you’re at a protest or at your home, whether in your workplace or whether you’re out shopping, these rules don’t change.”

He added, “We do believe there is a connection, we don’t believe that everybody has been doing this safely and wherever you can, please stay at home.”

The U.S. economy added 4.8 million jobs in June and the unemployment rate fell to 11.1 percent, both better than expected.

The economy has added around 7.3 million jobs in the past two months. The increase in the ranks of employed workers shows that companies ramped up hiring as the economy reopened and consumers came back to stores, restaurants, and other businesses that had been shuttered in March and April.

Job growth was strong in restaurants and bars, reflecting the reopening of those establishments across the country, which added 1.5 million jobs, the Labor Department said Thursday. But employment remains 3.1 million below February’s level, the month before the pandemic hit the U.S. economy.

Retail stores added 740,000. There were big gains in clothing stores, furniture stores, department stores, and auto dealerships. Despite the gains, total employment is around 1.5 million below February’s level.

Manufacturing employment rose by 356,000 but is down by 757,000 since February. June employment increases were concentrated in the durable goods component, with the auto sector adding 196,000 jobs, accounting for over half of the job gain in manufacturing. Construction employment increased by 158,000 in June, following a gain of 453,000 in May.

Employers added the jobs even as much of the country was beset by urban riots, looting of commercial districts, and marches by self-styled “black lives matter” activists calling for the defunding of police and the toppling of statues of political leaders from America’s past.

The co-founder of Black Lives Matter names a convicted cop killer as one of her heroes, and the BLM national organization is fiscally sponsored through a leftist group whose board of directors includes a convicted terrorist.

Alicia Garza, one of three co-founders of the Black Lives Matter national organization, has repeatedly talked about how convicted cop killer and wanted domestic terrorist Joanne Chesimard, also known as Assata Shakur, is one of her main inspirations. Susan Rosenberg, a member of the board of directors for the left-wing Thousand Currents group, which handles the intake of donations made to Black Lives Matter, is a convicted terrorist who, among other things, was suspected of helping Shakur escape from prison.

Rosenberg, who was listed as the vice chairwoman of the board of directors for Thousand Currents until the webpage was pulled down this week, as first reported by the Capital Research Center, had been a member of the radical leftist revolutionary militant group known as the May 19th Communist Organization, affiliated with the Weather Underground terrorist group and other radicals. She was convicted on weapons and explosives charges and sentenced to 58 years in prison, serving 16 years before being pardoned by President Bill Clinton in January 2001.

Thousand Currents did not return a request for comment.

Black Lives Matter, which is not a 501(c)(3) charitable group, uses an IRS-approved 501(c)(3) organization — Thousand Currents — as its fiscal sponsor, and so donations made on the Black Lives Matter website through the left-wing ActBlue donation platform go to Thousand Currents, which says it then distributes them to Black Lives Matter. Black Lives Matter has gained a vast amount of national attention, and funding, since the death in Minneapolis police custody of George Floyd on Memorial Day.

A white couple leaving a Chipotle restaurant this week were falsely accused of racism by a black woman and her 15-year-old daughter.

The black woman accused a pregnant white woman of bumping into her daughter near the entrance of the restaurant and demanded an apology.

The white woman accused the black women of blocking the sidewalk and preventing her from walking to her car.

Niggers now realize that if they can get any "racism" video to go viral on worldstarhiphop, it's like winning lottery. They'll get gibs, sympathy, talk show appearances, and their own line of #BLM merch. This means they will provoke you, yell in your face, stand in your way, block your car, attack your vehicle, drag you out of the vehicle, anything they need to get a sensational video and story out of you. Once you defend yourself, the kike media will dox you and unleash a mob that will seek to ruin you and your entire family.

And they've been arrested for defending themselves.

A husband-and-wife duo has been arrested and charged after a viral video showed the woman pulling a gun on a mother during a heated confrontation outside of a Chipotle restaurant in Orion Township, Michigan.

In cellphone footage that's been circulating on social media since late Wednesday, the woman can be seen brandishing a handgun while arguing with the camera operator at a parking lot, yelling, "Don't f—— jump behind my car."

On Thursday, Sheriff Michael Bouchard of Oakland County said in a press conference that the woman who pointed the gun and the driver in the video have each been charged with felonious assault, which carries a maximum punishment of four years in prison upon conviction.

Bouchard said the woman and man, who both carried concealed pistol licenses, each had a loaded gun in their possession when they were arrested.

Former President Barack Obama referred to the ongoing unrest around the country, associated with the Black Lives Matter protests, as a “Great Awakening” in his remarks to a fundraiser for former Vice President Joe Biden on Tuesday.

Obama said:

And the good news, what make me optimistic is, the fact that there is a Great Awakening going on around the country particularly among younger people who are saying not only are they fed up with the shambolic disorganized mean spirited approach to governance that we’ve seen over the last couple of years but more than that are eager to take on some of the core challenges that have been facing this country for centuries.

The original “Great Awakening” was a religious revival in colonial American society several decades prior to the Revolution.

As History.com notes:

The Great Awakening was a religious revival that impacted the English colonies in America during the 1730s and 1740s. The movement came at a time when the idea of secular rationalism was being emphasized, and passion for religion had grown stale. Christian leaders often traveled from town to town, preaching about the gospel, emphasizing salvation from sins and promoting enthusiasm for Christianity. The result was a renewed dedication toward religion. Many historians believe the Great Awakening had a lasting impact on various Christian denominations and American culture at large.

One of the most famous sermons of the Great Awakening is Jonathan Edwards’ “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God“:

The wrath of God burns against them, their damnation does not slumber; the pit is prepared, the fire is made ready, the furnace is now hot, ready to receive them; the flames do now rage and glow. The glittering sword is whet, and held over them, and the pit hath opened its mouth uPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

U.S. customs officials intercepted 19,555 pounds of prohibited meat products from China between April 6 and June 6 in Los Angeles, intercepting them before they reached American consumers.

The meat products contained prohibited pork, chicken, beef, and duck. They were packaged in boxes that had other consumer products such as headphones, door locks, kitchenware, trash bags, and cellphone covers, “in a clear attempt to smuggle the prohibited means,” according to a June 19 statement from the U.S Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

The Pentagon said in a statement late Tuesday evening that it had no corroborating evidence that Russian operatives offered bounties to the Taliban for American soldiers stationed in Afghanistan.

“The Department of Defense continues to evaluate intelligence that Russian GRU operatives were engaged in malign activity against United States and coalition forces in Afghanistan. To date, DOD has no corroborating evidence to validate the recent allegations found in open-source reports,” said Chief Pentagon Spokesman Jonathan Hoffman.

“Regardless, we always take the safety and security of our forces in Afghanistan – and around the world – most seriously and therefore continuously adopt measures to prevent harm from potential threats,”

The head of the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department has said he was “furious,” after three inspectors were arrested at Wednesday’s protest in opposition to the newly-enforced national security law.

HKFP has learned that the three inspectors will be suspended following their arrests, which were unrelated to the new legislation that criminalises secession, subversion, terrorist acts and collusion with foreign forces.

Local media reported they were arrested for allegedly participating in an unlawful assembly, but the department did not confirm in their response to HKFP. Its Commissioner Hermes Tang said the department would not tolerate any illegal acts and disciplinary offences, adding such behaviour would be handled seriously.

“All personnel must abide by the law and fully support and cooperate with the HKSAR and police work in stopping violence and curbing disorder,” the department said in an email reply on Thursday.

As Hong Kong marked 23 years since its handover to China on July 1, thousands of Hongkongers took to the streets in Causeway Bay and Wan Chai in defiance of a police ban.

The force deployed water cannon, tear gas, pepper spray and pepper balls to disperse crowds. They arrested around 370 people as of 10 pm on Wednesday, among which 10 were in connection with violation of the national security law.

Democrats in the Virginia Senate proposed downgrading the charge for assaulting an officer from a felony to a misdemeanor.

The Senate Democrats released a plan to address police brutality and racial injustice in response to nationwide protests. The proposal includes several changes to policy regarding policing, including changes to the crime of assaulting an officer.

“Our constituents want change,” said state Sen. Mamie Locke, chairwoman of the state Senate Democratic Caucus. “We hear that loud and clear from them. They want policy change. They’re pretty much done with thoughts and prayers. They’re done with ‘one more discussion’ and hearing us say we’ll get it done. … They want policy change.”

The policy would "defelonize" assaulting an officer and "return" the punishment from a felony to a misdemeanor. Currently, a person found guilty of assaulting an officer in the state faces a minimum sentence of six months in jail, though judges can issue a sentence of up to five years in prison. Misdemeanor sentences, meanwhile, carry a maximum sentence of one year in prison and no minimum sentence.

Senate Democrats in Virginia say all 21 members of their caucus supports passing the following criminal justice policies in a special session later this summer.

Reduce the charge for assaulting any politician from a felony to a traffic ticket.

“We strongly reject this allegation. The nineteen-year Jihad of the Islamic Emirate is not indebted to the beneficence of any intelligence organ or foreign country and neither is the Islamic Emirate in need of anyone in specifying objectives.”

Here again we see jihadis referring to their activities in strictly Islamic terms, while Islam is the foremost aspect of the conflict that Western analysts ignore as they try to formulate strategies to deal with that conflict.
