I can understand Toby's burden as a creator; one doesn't choose to let a beloved character die unless it's absolutely impossible to avoid. It's never easy, and it always hurts. He had a good reason to do things the way he did.
Asriel is Undertale's version of the Kobiyashi Maru test. It's a no-win scenario. You are not meant to save Asriel, and in fact it is impossible under any circumstances (short of editing the game code, ie: cheating). You can't even save him by letting him beat you and thus take over the world, as it is literally impossible to lose against him.
"How we face death is at least as important as how we face life."
Concerning Asriel, the player is forced to face death in all its normality and inevitability and irreversibility. I can't say it's necessarily a sign of maturity, because everyone grieves differently, but eventually you have to move on and face the fact that he isn't coming back. He can't. Oh sure, you can try and ignore it, or get around it by latching onto non-canon fiction where you could save him, or where things went differently, or whatever, but the fact of reality is that he is dead. You can't stop it, you can't change it. The only thing you can do is honor his last wishes and cherish the life he had. Remember him as himself and forget the flower that's left in the ruins. Take care of his parents. Keep up the friendships you've built. Forge a new future for yourself. He can't hurt anymore, so try not to hurt, either.
Remember his smile, his warmth, his scent, the brightness and love in his eyes. If you keep those things inside of your heart, he'll never really be completely gone.

>this "irreversible" shit
>in a game where the main character's power is reversing shit
sorry, but this fails on a great many levels, most notably you're right there and talking to him- the only reason that Frisk didn't immediately go, say, "HEY ALPHYS GET HERE NOW AND DO ANYTHING YOU CAN TO STABILIZE HIM" is because it's not part of the story.
Have some more goats.

It's a lesson that while you can fix many things, eventually, you will find something you simply can't fix.
And then the only thing you can do, is let it go, and try to move on.
By trying to stop it, or save something that cannot, and should not be saved, you can then make a situation worse.
From there, things spiral out of control, until you're left with little to no options.
You can only do what you planned to do from the outset. Let it go, and move on. .
The above sums up the major theme of the game. Think about Flowey after you read this, and the pieces should fall into place.

And again, it's fucking stupid, especially in context.
The only reason any of this works is that Frisk has to go through the motions, has to play along, and can't talk. Frisk can't just call up Alphys after a reset and go "Hey, Flowey is Asriel, and he can use everyone's souls to blast through the barrier, can you find a way to keep him not from turning back into a flower after he does that?"
But, because it's a game, the player simply lacks the agency to do things like that.
Imagine if you were trying to DM a fucking tabletop game of Undertale with a player who could rewind and do things as many times as he liked.

You're assuming there IS a way to keep him as himself. You're assuming that Frisk hasn't actually TRIED in multiple resets already.
You're assuming that the being standing in front of you is actually Asriel, instead of some kind of echo laid upon a shell of dust and Determination, and that you aren't infringing upon what HE wants by keeping his soul (or whatever monsters have in lieu of a soul) from leaving the realm of the living as it is meant to.
Did Asriel ever once ask you to save him? Didn't he, in nicer words, tell you to fuck off and let him go in peace, to live your life and move on?? I think you're being selfish by going against this.

You're all missing what's right in front of you. Quoted from some other guy:
>If you want to change history that badly, the game effectively tells you what you need to do.
>SAVE and LOAD are only small aspects of DETERMINATION. If you have enough real DETERMINATION, you can reach in and alter reality on behalf of Frisk and Asriel.
>In my playthrough, Asriel did not tell Frisk that they need to be careful of the outside. Instead, he told Frisk that they had SAVEd his SOUL through pure DETERMINATION and that he would be visiting the surface with everyone else.
>How? The dialogue in data.win is in plaintext, and if you make sentences with the same length of the originals, you can change the dialogue as you like. That's how.
So there. The true power of determination is the ability to change the code of the game itself.

>You're assuming that Frisk hasn't actually TRIED in multiple resets already.
This is blatantly retarded. "You're assuming that something we never see happen hasn't happened"
>from leaving the realm of the living
Except he's not dead, he's Flowey.
>Did Asriel ever once ask you to save him? Didn't he, in nicer words, tell you to fuck off and let him go in peace, to live your life and move on?? I think you're being selfish by going against this.
He didn't ask you to try to save him while he was busy trying to kill you, either. But you did it anyway. Except you can't (without just tossing the story itself out) because doguniverse and emo.
>>1801
In the end, this. You can call it "cheating" if you want but in-universe the player is basically straight-up labeled a godlike, transdimensional force (Flowey comes straight out and says that you're the only one with the power to kill their happy ending). Change the game, change the story.

You're all forgetting the fact that you AREN'T Frisk, I posted this in the /v/ thread but it's like the game called OFF.
I theorize Chara and Frisk are one in the same, Chara who become a flower like Flowey and eventually reincarnated their form when they got a push- the push being the player, Chara probably went postal on the humans in the village then went to the monsters, problem being; that's a long ass fall.
A fall so long they lost all their EXP, Sans even says something along the lines of "You're not completely innocent, but you kept a certain tenderness about you" in the true pacifist route.
In the Genocide route you give Chara enough power to complete their mission, it's why Frisk is a non element here, Frisk doesn't exist in a Genocide route because you didn't set the new vessel on that path, it's why at the end after beating Sans Chara stabs themself without your input, and addresses you as a good partner, Chara is now strong enough to go through the game without any LOVE and not become Frisk.
Fisk on the other hand becomes strong enough in a true pacifist ending, and names themself it's because they are now strong enough to control their own body, but leaves you in control.
It's why you can't die against Asriel; Frisk won't let it happen, I also think it's why you can't hurt any of the True Lab enemies.
