Alright, boys and girls, Wonderland/Suffering Anon here. It's Shoggoth time. I've thought about it, procrastinated about it, and teased it, now I'm going to do it. Get yourselves comfortable and turn off the lights.

Shoggoths are a strange sort of mamono with an enigmatic reputation. Archaeological records dictate that creatures resembling them first appeared to remote human settlements at least ten thousand years ago, and yet the`creatures themselves state that they have known mankind longer. Puzzling also is the fact that records of them sharply declined at the nine thousand year mark, until they vanished. Only within the past hundred years have the Shoggoths returned to the record, a rare and mysterious, yet increasing, presence in our World. Much discussion has been made of the fact that the first "modern" entities appeared shortly before first contact with Wonderland. Whether a connection exists is unknown.

A Shoggoth is an amorphous blob of malleable black/blue/white ichor and plasm possessed of a conscious mind and on average weighing in at two hundred pounds imperial. For reasons known only to it, the entity takes on a distorted facsimile of a humanoid female figure dressed in a Frankian maid uniform. Despite the fact that it can form any number of shapes, appendages, organs, and orifices at will from its protoplasm, the Shoggoth will always default to this form. Its "body" is somewhat unstable, randomly projecting pseudopods and opening xanthous eyes from its lower half unless otherwise ordered. Its expression is typically set in a contented if vaguely unsettling smile. Its "facial" eyes are yellow like the rest, but are given an amount of detail closer akin to the human equivalent; while the sclera is dark grey and the iris pulses to an unknown rhythm (and the "eyeballs" themselves are set in wide lidless and pitch black sockets which contract or expand with the creature's mood), the features are identical to that of a human.

In terms of demeanor, all Shoggoths maintain an unshakably servile attitude (with the exception of AllBlack states, more on that later). The entity will follow any order given to it by its designated master, save for any that would permanently separate them (for instance, ordering one to commit suicide will have the thing commit an act fatal to a human; debate has been held over whether this indicates a morbid sense of humor, or a deeper psychological fault). These can range from making a specific blend of tea, to sexual acts, to outright murder. If it so pleases the master, a Shoggoth will do it. Whatever hobby or reading material their master indulges in, the Shoggoth will also partake of it (or at least the knowledge of it) so that they may avail themselves on that subject if asked. They will be aware of all past and present relationships, usually through inquiry, then examination of correspondence, and then through whatever means they have available. All habits, inhibitions, and preferences become known to them. Whatever gets them closer and more essential to their master is the route they will take. While this approach begins subtly and slowly, the Shoggoth will occasionally lapse into displays of self-satisfaction at the state of its relationship with the master, or express frustrated bemusement if he remains cautious. It will grow to anticipate all his needs and wants with time. Outright rejecting the Shoggoth merely results in it returning to the subtler approach. It has all the time it could want to be patient, after all.

If he values the life of an innocent, however, the master is not to introduce "another" maid to the household without its approval. A Shoggoth's mental state will rapidly deteriorate in the presence of a servant it deems a threat to its position, and within days of determining this threat it will devolve into a shapeless and feral monstrosity. Only an invocation of the Yellow Sign can restore order at that point.

The bond shared between the Shoggoth and its master is as strong as it is odd. The creature chooses the recipient of its service seemingly at random, appearing without warning to offer its services. Anyone from the poorest serf to the wealthiest noble may be chosen (though most are unmarried and living rurally). All a Shoggoth asks is for a roof to reside under and a single square meal per week. Whatever else it needs, it can absorb from its environs. If it is rejected, the thing will simply greet its "choice" at the door each morning until they break down and accept. From there on, it assumes the servile pattern of approach discussed beforehand. However, the deepening association developed is not limited to physical use. Over time, the Shoggoth's bond takes on a mental aspect. The more it knows its master, the more it can tell what he is thinking. While this could be written off as observational skill, the master can in turn perceive snatches of the Shoggoth's thoughts. Eventually, both may glimpse each other's memories. While this can facilitate their relationship, such an eldritch exchange is seldom of benefit to the master's mental health. Unless specifically ordered to filter its thoughts, the Shoggoth will happily and obliviously drive its master to raving insanity with alien thought processes, stimuli he has no senses for, and memories of an unfathomably distant past. Depending on what it perceives, however, the entity will become more accustomed to human behavior, and indeed may adopt it: Gestures and body language, social cues and etiquette, into emotional intelligence and logic. It can even learn to flawlessly imitate the master's voice and adopt a completely humanoid form for limited periods.

Contrary to rumor and tale, Shoggoths do not and can not understand the concept of love unless their master does (and if it happens at all, it will take time). It is foreign to them, as serving another is their entire purpose. While they have an understanding of reciprocity, care beyond those bounds is confusing. A Shoggoth values its master's life not out of emotional concern, but because it would fail its purpose if he were to die. Nor does the thing value its own existence, seeing itself as merely a tool to be used (even if being used gives it pleasure). For instance, were its master to express or feel grief in response to its seeming demise, and then excess relief, a Shoggoth will experience profound incomprehension. While it is pleased to know more of its master, the entity is deeply disquieted by these strong foreign emotions and why it cannot parse them. Why should the master care so much about what is merely a tool? Such disquiet will eventually drive it to distraction, which it deems an unacceptable failure on its own part. So it will give up and ask the master why he feels the way he does. All this accomplishes is the creation of new questions and the idea that humans are insane. Some grow more comfortable with that idea as the mental link solidifies and thoughts overlap. Others will increasingly withdraw into their memories, both to find comfort in the past and in hopes that their present master will turn out like the old ones. Either way, a Shoggoth coming to truly love its master is a rare occurrence, a madness shared by two.

In all of this, a Shoggoth never consults another Shoggoth, even if another is close at hand. Unless directed by a master, they will not acknowledge each other in public. Prompted interactions of this nature tend to be verbally brisk but physically

possessive. Other Audient Void entities are treated as if nobles of a familiar court, though that rapidly chills if they attempt to take the Shoggoth's master. If another, more terrestrial Mamono attempts such, they will be rebuffed on an increasingly violent scale depending on their efforts. Unless otherwise ordered, attempted rape is cause for immediate death and then absorption. So long as they are not a "threat," however, the Shoggoth will accept the presence of Mamono friends. These protocols are reached through a combination of instinct and judgement, all of its own will.

And yet, for years there has existed evidence that the Shoggoths ultimately answer to something else.

So named for the sudden and drastic change in appearance, the AllBlack states are dramatic transformations of body and mind in a Shoggoth. A state begins without preamble, coming mid-action or even mid-word. The Shoggoth freezes in place and then changes all its color to a pitch black hue, all eyes winking out. Its "outfit" changes into a number of different configurations, though the most frequent sighted include a ballgown with red trim or flowing robes with a strange headdress. Not one tentacle or mouth will emerge from this ensemble unless the entity wishes it. Its lips draw back from perfect white and human teeth, a cruel smile set beneath eyes somehow even darker than the rest of its body. Its vocal register shifts to a smooth contralto, sometimes to an inhuman bass or eerie falsetto.

For the duration of this state, the Shoggoth will behave with mocking condescension and a callous disregard for its master's safety, in addition to unpredictable inquiry. It seemingly relishes in their confusion, fear, or anger, for instance asking if the master is pleased with "this one's" service, then throwing them with a sudden tentacle just short of a window. It will state that the Shoggoth he knows is present, but not "awake." If asked its name, the entity will laugh and then deflect. It will say that it is always there, and is a part of the Shoggoth the master cares so much about. It will express amusement that the master sees the Shoggoth as anything more than a tool. Even more amusing if the Shoggoth has begun to see itself as a person. It then offers to make itself "more useful" by erasing the developed personality, if the master wishes for a more even and less restrained service. No recorded Shoggoth and master have reported agreeing to this offer, but sightings of feral instances devoid of their masters have been recorded rampaging through the countryside.

The state ends as suddenly as it begins. The Shoggoth has no memory of the incident, and will become distressed if prodded on it. However, it does gain a greater control over its shape. AllBlack states seldom reoccur, though it is not unknown. When they do, it is often at the most disruptive moments possible. Only specific magical bindings can prevent the chance of a recurrence.

When Lovecraft was alive, Derleth basically was his proofreader. Post-mortem, he was among the most vocal promoters of Lovecraft's works toward a wider audience (the latter being a huge elitist and did not care about popularity). But even then, just how much did Derleth truly do to push Lovecraft's work into worldwide recognition is up to debate.

The artist really nailed the look on her face. It's caring, but also subtly psychotic … maybe. It's obvious enough to see that something is off about the look on her face, but subtle enough for it to be hard to pin down what exactly that is. It's her eyes. And then I noticed that she isn't two eyed.

Ah, that is also part of the Shoggoth. Whenever she gets jealous/territorial, as seen in how it reacts to unapproved maids, she deteriorates into that feral and formless state until THREAT is REMOVED. This can also happen more readily if her master agrees to "wipe the slate clean" with the AllBlack state. I'm of two minds with that: either the Shog devours its master and rampages aimlessly, or the master killed himself once he'd realized what he'd done, and the Shog's personality reasserted itself just long enough to go mad from grief.

Not a fan of this use of Azathoth. Azathoth is a label applied to the boundless, inconceivable, uncomprehending chaos beyond dimensioned space. To approach such a thing, let alone speak with it, would not be dissimilar to crossing the event horizon of a black hole. Though things like facts, communication, or indeed likeness may exist past that limen of light, they are unknowable to any wholly material mind. Only one entity can communicate with the Lord of All, its soul and messenger the crawling chaos Nyarlathotep.

AllBlack also probably isn't the crawling chaos. Nyarlathotep's modus operandi is using agents like formless lunar monsters or men to do its bidding. Not that it couldn't wear any man, monster, or god like a mask, it just doesn't seem to. Nyarlathotep's also pretty well-spoken.

AllBlack would be a good characterization for a human altered by something from beyond the oort and who now revels in the deception and suffering of men. Or maybe one of the shoggoths' long-dead creators laughing at the perversions of the planet's new dominant species.

In my humble defense, I couldn't think of a higher expression of incredulity and exasperation for an Outer God than by invoking its master as an oath. I also must disagree a little with how you describe Azathoth, since he is also known as the Nuclear Chaos, hence "center of all."

That's probably my fault. I haven't read Nyarlathotep's dialogue for a while, so I just worked with what I remembered of its characterization, namely a colossal and thoroughly malevolent dick who derives amusement from watching men destroy themselves. The idea I have is that the whole "Audient Void" is another of its forms (or at least the space where its consciousness resides in this setting; it's really only a limb into this universe's space), and the resulting mamono are its game pieces. The World's situation amused it so greatly that Nyarlathotep wanted to join in on the "fun."

Night-Gaunts are another peculiar resident race of the Audient Void. They are servants of a different sort from the Shoggoths, silent messengers and watchers in service to great eldritch entities…and to those few mortals who can harness them. Like the Shoggoth, they appear in ancient archaeological records, ones previously misidentified as containing demons or even angels (in a rare interview, a member of the latter vehemently denied Night-Gaunts having anything to do with either side). Unlike the Shoggoth, they have been sporadically seen over the millennia since, though their rate of sightings has spiked as of the past hundred years.

A Night-Gaunt is a chimeric winged and horned humanoid possessing traits from mammals, cephalopods, gastropods, dragons, as well as elements not found in this World, weighing around one hundred and ten pounds imperial. Typically, they are covered in a coating of light-absorbent pitch-black slime, with oily "hair" (actually thin hollow tendrils similar to fiber-optic cables lined with millions of tiny spiracles) of the same color and a grey-white body beneath. Black tentacle-pseudopods with purplish tips emanate from its spine, used to carry additional objects and securing potential riders; a pair of bat-like wings project from its upper back, with an average wingspan of sixteen feet. The face is typically hidden behind a featureless "mask" of tightly compressed hair, and though it is usually unemotive and unsettlingly doll-like in its smoothness, it is at least recognizably human. Like the Shoggoth, other eyes (monochromatic purple in color) dot the rest of its concealed body, though the pale "facial" eyes are those most often seen. All specimens found have been confirmed female beneath the slime, though the Night-Gaunt can completely conceal its sex through tightly binding its figure. It does this by wrapping the entirety of her flexible form in strands of its "hair", then tightening it until no signs of either sex remain. A Night-Gaunt's pointed fingers can acquire knife-like sharpness in this condition, so it is sometimes used for self-defense.

Night-Gaunts, by definition, speak for others when they themselves cannot be present. It can speak the given to it with the exact tone, inflection, and volume intended by the sender. It can even flawlessly imitate their voice, if the sender has one and the Night-Gaunt has heard it. If they have not (or the recipient wishes to read the message instead), the messenger will flatten its wing and display white text in an easily legible font across it. Any time it speaks with another's voice, the Night-Gaunt displays a novel feature:having masked its face in "hair," it proceeds to "project" the face (and sometimes hair) of the sender onto the blank mask, perfectly showing their expression at the time of the message's dictation (unless otherwise ordered). A Night-Gaunt does not speak its own words without a trick, as it sees itself as nothing more than a herald and a mouth-piece. Its own words are entirely insignificant, and therefore deserve no voice. Thus, whenever it needs to "speak" to sender or recipient, it uses either appropriate text or sign language to get the message across. Its "diction" is almost unfailingly clipped, precise, and beige, possessing a purpose-limited vocabulary. While utterly patient and capable of memorizing pages-long messages, a Night-Gaunt does not remember past messages unless they were its own words, and therefore cannot grow its vocabulary without instruction outside its task. This can result in frustrated body language and shifting eyes if it is asked something it has no appropriate words for.

Remedying this problem is one of several ways past that stoic mask.

The wings of a Night-Gaunt contain something similar to cephalopodal chromatophors, though all white. They come in complex patterns which only require portional "light-ups" to produce characters in a vast variety of languages. The "hairs" over the wings unconsciously adjust to unveil as many of these character-makers as are necessary.

These are what the Night-Gaunt sees with while her facial eyes are otherwise occupied. They grant her a 360° field of vision, which is remarkably useful in evading pursuit and obstacles in any environment. The slime/mucus/film yes, I know there is a difference between all three, I just need to make up my mind acts as a filter against the spectrum of light, protecting the Night-Gaunt's highly sensitive "true" skin, and preventing sensory overload in the hidden eyes. It is the means through which the Night-Gaunt protects herself from the vacuum of space, and renders herself impervious to environmental toxins. As a side note, the "horns" are actually antennae attuned to cosmic signals. Were this World to develop radio, she would be able to hear the waves.

I think a simple array of chromatophores makes more sense than complex patterns. It's easier to grow and doesn't box you into a limited set of characters. You can remotely reprogram the neural algorithms for language production use Magneto (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4846560/) on Broca's area or equivalent to build new character encodings. This also saves you the trouble of covering the wings with "hair".

There are a few ways to go about this. Internal electrically short antennae could catch some radio frequencies, but you'd be limited by how much loading coil you could fit in the horns. Microstrip antennae could be used for some microwave frequencies. The horns could be converted to leaky wave antennae to get millimetre wavelengths. But no matter what you do the angular resolution of anything horn-length is way too low to handle cosmic radio signals.

Anatomy

The body is radially symmetric. 20 conical arms radiate from the prolate edge of a dorsoventrally compressed central disc. The maximum arm span is 120 cm. Each arm is 50 cm long.

The integument has 3 layers: the surface layer, a keratinized polycarbonate cuticle; the middle epidermal layer; and a dermal skeleton. The epidermis is pigmented by a black body hydroxylapatite, calcium carbonate, and carbon mix similar to bone char. The dermal skeleton is segmented into a regular hexagonal tiling of ossicles. Each ossicle is comprised of calcite stereoms. Thermoplastic copolyester (TPC) is the elastomer component of connective tissue in the dermis and epidermis. TPC grants increased elasticity and chemical, impact, and thermal resistance relative to elastin in the mammalian dermis.

Musculature, Respiration, and Circulation

There are two types of muscles in the arms and body: smooth muscles and fluidic skeletal muscles. Smooth muscles are comprised mostly of contractile sheets of α-actin and myosin II. They can be found in intestinal, oesophageal, stomach, and vascular tissues. Fluidic skeletal muscles are bladders through which contractile tissues move gas or liquid (though never both at once) to cause tension or relaxation. Groups of skeletal muscles form antagonistic pairs. In the arms, skeletal muscles parallel to the longitudinal axis are grouped near the base and those perpendicular to the longitudinal axis have a transverse arrangement. In the central disc, skeletal muscles perpendicular to the oblate axis have a radial arrangement. Skeletal muscles also perform respiratory gas exchange with adjacent vessels. The inner surfaces of skeletal muscular bladders are lamellated. This and the thermoconforming nature of the organism allows it to easily breathe underwater and at high altitudes. Peristaltic movement of the arms circulates fluids through skeletal muscles and the vascular system. Spiracles encircle the base of each arm.

Digestive System

The mouth, a peristomial membrane around a sphincter, is located in the middle of the ventral side of the central disc. A short oesophagus connects the mouth to the stomach. A second sphincter divides the stomach into two segments: an eversible cardiac gizzard and a pyloric sac. The gizzard is lined with chitinous teeth reinforced by calcium carbonate and can be re-inverted by ligaments connected to the arms. Glandular tissue around the inner mouth and oesophagus secretes saliva into the gizzard. The pyloric sac's inner surface is ciliated. The metachronal movement of the cilia pushes food through the digestive tract. A toroidal hepatopancreas surrounds, secretes digestive enzymes into, and absorbs digested food from the pyloric sac. The pyloric sphincter separates the pyloric sac and a short, villiated intestine. The intestine reabsorbs water from digested food and passes food waste to a smooth rectum. The rectum excretes food waste through a small anus in the middle of the dorsal side of the central disc.

Sensory and Effector Organs

Hundreds of thousands of pit eyes cover the arms and central disc. Pit eye receptor cells are capacitor arrays made of organic superconductors (spines of carbon atoms with alternating diethyl-cyanine iodide side-chain molecules) and water as a dielectric medium. Leucophores (white-reflective chromatophores) behind the receptor cells allow the pit eyes to be individually focused and improve sensitivity to UV light.

Spiracles at the base of each arm connect to short rings of olfactory epithelium before branching into the skeletal muscles.

Taste receptors are sparsely distributed across the inner surface of the eversible gizzard. The highest concentration of taste receptors is around the cardiac-pyloric sphincter.

Auditory organs encircle each arm just above the spiracles. Each organ is an invagination leading to a fluid filled vesicle. The underside of the vesicle is connected to sensory hair cells.

Tiny, sessile echinoidal pedicellariae cover the arms and central disc.

Nervous System

Axons and dendrites are optical fibres made of poly(methyl methacrylate) (acrylic glass). The average axonal branching factor is 15000 compared to 7000 for adult humans and 10000 for 3-year-old humans. Synapses are made of pentacene, an organic phototransistor. Nervous cell bodies are light-emitting electrochemical cells with graphene electrodes and pentacene semiconductors.

The nervous systems of each arm have the same general structure and can operate independently. Arms communicate via thick torus of long-axon neurons in the central disc. There is no centralized brain. Sensorimotor cross-connections gate signals allowing sensory and motor neurons to be used for cognition when not otherwise occupied. The Encephalisation Quotient (EQ) relative to Asteroidea is 17.856. EQ of humans relative to Mammalia is 7.44.

Reproduction

Pairs of gonads are contained in each arm. Every arm is capable of sexual reproduction, during which gametes are released from the arm's tip. Asexual reproduction via fission of the central disc or autotomy is also possible. The largest distance from the central disk an arm can be severed and still regrow a body is 1.5 cm. Nervous systems of arms or segments regenerated from the central disk are initialized with data from the remaining arm(s).

Materials Fabrication

Pliable, pigmented TPC can be extruded from glands in the epidermis. Acrylic glass axons can also be extruded from large neural gangia at the tips of the arms. Once axons reach the desired length the neural ganglia bud and are shaped by pedicellariae to form circuits in the extruded TPC sheets. The neural ganglia can connect to the circuits and communicate at a rate of 417 Petabit/s. The human brain can contain ~20 petabits of information. Pedicellariae form pit eyes in extruded TPC sheets by pulling receptor cells and leucophores from existing eyes (which later regenerate) and wiring them to the circuits. Due to the high bandwidth and <1 µs signal latency between the circuits and any nucleus in the nervous system, the nervous system and any circuits to which it is connected have a single integrated consciousness.

Anatomy

Night-gaunts have morphological characteristics analogous to those of modern bats, birds, and humans, as well as characteristics unlike those of any creature alive or in the fossil record. On average they weigh 35 kg and stand 180 cm tall when fully extending their legs. The skeletal structure of their torso is most similar to that of humans, though the shoulder girdle has non-therian attributes. Four limbs radiate from the shoulder girdle, two arms and two wings. The length and skeletal structure of the arms are the same as in humans. The skeletal structure of the wings is the same as in modern bats, with an average wingspan of 520 cm and an average aspect ratio of 7. Night-gaunts are digitigrade. 35 caudal vertebrae in the spinal cord form a prehensile tail. At the 25th caudal vertebra, the prehensile tail forks into two 5-vertebrae digits. Each digit is controlled independently. The skull is similar to that of humans, but horned.

Sheets of β-keratin comprise motile, oblong kite-shaped integumentary appendages that cover night-gaunts' prehensile tail. Fine hooks line the edges of the integumentary plates, allowing them to cross-link. Ligaments connect the plates to the caudal vertebrae. The two tail digits are covered by reticula composed of α-keratin instead of the integumentary appendages. The reticular scales have a regular hexagonal tiling. Every integumentary structure comprised of keratin, including hair follicles and horns, are pigmented black by eumelanin.

Night-gaunt skin is very pale due to a low concentration of eumelanin and melanocytes. Similarly, the stroma of the iris has almost no eumelanin, though the epithelial cells are pigmented by pheomelanin. This gives night-gaunts light red or purple eyes.

Musculature

Night-gaunts owe their eponymous litheness to the composition of their skeletal muscles. Smooth and cardiac muscles are the same in night-gaunts as in other vertebrates, but their skeletal muscles are ionic polymer-graphene composite fibrils. Bundles of fibrils are banded by an endoplasmic reticulum that transfers charges through the fibrils. Charges in muscle cells are controlled by active transport of ions across the cellular membrane. Muscle displacement is proportional to the charge transferred through the fibrils.

Wings and Flight

The night-gaunt shoulder girdle has a paired coracoid. A superior dorsolateral glenohumeral joint on the night-gaunt coracoid serves as an articulation for a wing. The coracoid does not extend beneath the clavicle. Instead, a scapular coracoid process attaches to the coracoacromial, coracoclavicular, and coracohumeral ligaments of the arm. Additional coracoclavicular and coracocoracoid ligaments attach the coracoid proper to the clavicle and coracoid process respectively. Supracoracoideus and extra pectoralis muscles control wing movement. The coracoid and scapula have thin, convex medial borders. The coracoid is the same length as the scapula, both of which are slightly longer than the scapula of humans. Other notable features of the night-gaunt shoulder girdle include a furcula, or fused clavicle, and an elongated acromion process.

Unlike in bat wings, the patagium connects to the torso at the tip of the scapula. The patagium and skin of the wing limbs are also, unlike the rest of the skin, pigmented black by eumelanin.

Lacking a keel on their sternum, night-gaunts tuck their long legs against their torso and their arms against their sides to reduce drag during flight.

The cervical vertebrae of night-gaunts are even more hypertrophied than humans' to allow for the innervation of the wings. Modifications to the thickness of the neural arches, the plane of articulation between adjacent centra, the ventral interlocking of adjacent centra, and the angles of articulation reflected by the anterior zygapophyses for the cervical vertebrae relative to humans allow for significantly increased neck flexibility. This allows night-gaunts to focus their field of view along the craniocaudal axis while in flight and the anteroposterior axis while on the ground.

Feet, Legs, and Pelvis

Like in birds and Heterodontosauridae, the distals and metatarsals 2, 3, and 4 are fused to form a tarsometatarsus, and the tibia and proximals are fused to form a tibiotarsus. The fibula is also reduced relative to tetrapods. Tarsometatarsi improve jumping and reduce landing shock relative to unfused distals and metatarsals. The relative proportions of the femur, fibula and tibiotarsus, and tarsometatarsus are approximately 36:40:24. The fibula and tibiotarsus comprise the same proportion of the leg as the fibula and tibia in tetrapod limbs. The feet are anisodactyl.

The sacrum is composed of 5 fused sacral vertebrae and 2 partly fused lumber vertebrae. The sacrum is slightly more fused to the innominate bones than in mammals, though not as much as some species of bird. The sacral canal widens caudally to allow greater innervation to the tail. The sacrocaudal joint is directed distodorsally. Caudal muscles are bundled more dorsally than ventrally.

Respiratory System

Night-gaunt lungs are smaller than those of humans; however, the intrapulmonary bronchus branches into anterior air sacs. These air sacs do not directly perform gas exchange, but serve as extra bellows. A large number of pneumatized bones also contain air sacs connected to the respiratory system. Parabronchi connect dorso- and ventro-bronchi that branch from the intrapulmonary bronchus in the lungs. Pulmonary capillaries surround the parabronchi and diffuse oxygen along their length. Gas from the air sacs moves through the parabronchi during exhalation, maintaining unidirectional airflow through the parabronchi and allowing for gas exchange during exhalation. Inhalation and exhalation are controlled by a diaphragm of skeletal muscle separating the toracic cavity and the abdomen.

Night-gaunts are chordata with a centralized brain within their cranium. Sensory afferents and motor efferents from the spinal cord connect contralaterally with the medulla (brainstem). Sensory afferents from the optic nerves cross at a rostral optic chiasm before preliminary processing in medial lobe nuclei. Medullary nuclei regulate the autonomic nervous system. The pons is superior to the medulla. Its nuclei relay signals between the medulla and cerebrum and perform preliminary auditory processing. The cerebrum is comprised of 26 major lobes arranged around a medial lobe superior to the pons. Some of the major lobes are subdivided, bringing the total number of lobes to 41. The major lobes are highly gyrified, whereas the medial lobe, the pons, and the medulla are smooth. Similar to normal vertebrate cerebella, the neuropils of the anterior basal and peduncle (anterior to the pons) lobes have horizontal and vertical parallel fibre arrangements respectively. The lobes primarily communicate via a thick, branching torus of axons surrounding the medial lobe and stemming from the pons. Adjacent lobes also communicate via shorter direct connections. Although most lobes do not have single, precise functions, posterior lobes are generally involved in sensory interpretation and the anterior lobes are generally involved in motor control, planning, learning, and procedural and declarative memory.

Bioelectric Mechanisms

Night-gaunts conduct electrical currents through a subcutaneous mesh of polyaniline fibres. The spacing of the mesh varies and is smallest in the hands. Specialized electrocytes at mesh nodes store and release charges. Unlike electrocytes in electric fish which operate via active transport of sodium and potassium ions, night-gaunt electrocytes operate like solid-state batteries. Nanometer films of graphene anodes, lithium phosphorus oxynitride electrolytes, and naphthalene-bithiophene polymer cathodes are stacked within non-conductive phospholipid bilayers. Electrocytes are controlled by parallel nervous circuits and can be independently or simultaneously discharged to produce low or high-voltage bursts respectively. Simultaneous discharge timings are regulated by a medullary nucleus. Night-gaunts satisfy the basic conditions of eusociality: cooperative breeding, reproductive division of labour, reproductive and helper castes, and overlapping adult generations; however, they are not obligately eusocial because the helper caste is not permanently sterile. Colonies can be either monogynous of polygynous, but all colonies are monandrous. Foundresses of polygynous colonies are usually sisters. For multiple-foundress colonies, a single husband reproduces asexually through autotomy and the resulting individuals bond monogamously with the foundresses. Overlapping generations of daughters constitute the helper caste and provide alloparental care to new generations. One or more daughters may leave to found a new colony depending on resource abundance, colony density, or strategic value in combat.

Anatomy

Shoggoths are clonal colonies of 1000 ramets on average. Each ramet can metamorphose into an indeterminate number of forms based on environmental conditions; however, the vast majority of ramets comprising a shoggoth never do so. Metamorphosis is done mostly by clusters of ramets to form sensory or effector structures in response to stimuli. These structures are consumed by the shoggoth when the stimuli are removed. Unspecialized ramets are flexible, bioluminescent, dark purple spheres with a 1 cm average diameter. The only two common morphological features of all ramet forms are: the presence of epidermal, mesodermal, and endodermal germ layers consisting of skin and nervous, muscular, and digestive tissues respectively; and a high concentration of a magnetic aniline polymer in the epidermis. The magnetic polyaniline allows ramets to seal their epidermis around foreign objects and ingest them similarly to phagocytosis, share their contents through gap junctions, and connect to each other on contact. How ramets connect and move defines a cluster's momentary shape and whether it is fluid or solid. Shoggoths' mimicry of other objects and organisms is more often accomplished by magnetic ramet interactions than one-to-one recreation.

Nervous System

Ramets' nervous systems are comprised of two-dimensional meshes of omnidirectionally conductive neurons. Neural nets are present in every germ layer, though neurons are by far most abundant in the epidermis. The neural nets of each germ layer operate largely independently. Cross-connections between epidermal sensory and motor neurons gate signals so those neurons can be used for cognition when not otherwise occupied. Ramets use epidermal magnetoreceptors to communicate with each other. Chains of hundreds of intracellular oblong magnetosomes orient themselves along the field lines of the magnetic polyaniline. The activity of ramets' ion gate/pump-based neurons disrupts the magnetic field. The resulting fluctuations in magnetosome alignment releases calcium ions which cause neurotransmitter vesicles to fuse with a presynaptic membrane and release their contents. Postsynaptic sensory neurons also receive signals from adjacent neurons, so they depolarize simultaneously with local magnetic field disruptions. This allows ramets to distinguish between their own nervous activity and that of other ramets.

To facilitate communication between distant clusters of ramets, some ramets metamorphose into forms with branching projections. Many 100-200 µm diameter projections with high concentrations of magnetoreceptors receive signals from nearby ramets. After the ramet's body processes this information, several 100-500 µm diameter bundles of axons transmit data to other clusters of ramets. How information is processed and what data is sent depend on the state of the local ramet cluster and to which clusters the ramet is sending data. Projection branches are plastic and remodelled by autophagy.

Lateral Gene Transfer

Ramets reproduce only asexually through budding. Lateral Gene Transfer (LGT) is used instead of sexual reproduction to promote genetic diversity and adapt to the environment. LGT can occur between ramets or between a ramet and any cells it ingests. In both cases, LGT is mediated by phage-like Gene Transfer Agents (GTAs). GTAs containing ramet DNA are produced by endodermal cells, but satellite and helper viruses are needed to produce GTAs from ingested cells. Different virus strains can infect animals, fungi, plants, and prokaryotes. Fibroblast derivative packing cells containing DNA plasmids that express viral gene products release satellite or helper virions. Satellite virions contain reverse transcriptase and an mRNA restriction site sequence. The mRNA sequence has no promoter and is not expressed. Helper virions contain restriction enzymes, vector DNA, and DNA ligase. The restriction enzymes cleave infected cells' DNA at the restriction site encoded by the satellite virus, and DNA ligase builds recombinant DNA from the cellular and vector DNA strands. The vector encodes for GTA gene products and GTA and cellular gene promoters.

Cellular Respiration

Shoggoths are facultative anaerobes capable of photosynthesis. In most situations, carbohydrates are ingested or produced by photosynthesis and catabolized during aerobic respiration. In an anoxic environment, shoggoths switch to anaerobic respiration using cobalt(III), fumarate, halocarbons, iron(III), manganese(IV), nitrate, sulfur, or uranium(VI) as an electron acceptor. To use a particular electron acceptor, a shoggoth must have undergone significant LGT with a clade that uses it, and it must be available in sufficient quantities. Because anaerobic respiration is less efficient than aerobic respiration, shoggoths tend to split into smaller clusters or even individual ramets in anoxic environments. These clusters then compete for resources or leave. Similar behaviour can be seen in aphotic environments with few prey.

Well, anon, you'll have to be more specific: there are many more Great Old Ones than just old Tentacleface. Each of the GOO are a singular and unique entity, if memory serves, thus apart from being alien abominations, it's difficult to pin them down to one thing. The Great Priest itself may or may not have descendants in the Kraken, but that's understandably difficult to verify. Cthylla is a direct offspring however, so perhaps a more feminine-looking version of her father. Bit sheltered. The Black Goat in the Woods is not present there is only one Outer God here, but some of her Thousand Young are, and resemble twisted Satyrs. Mother Hydra is the matriarch of the Deep Ones (which have also been known as Sahuagin), and as such is the largest of their kind, yet is also the least mind-breaking of the Great Old Ones thanks to interacting so often with the World at large.

A Great Old One could do as it does out of boredom, or to fulfill its own unknowable purposes. Perhaps it wants to put on a show. Perhaps it's been corrupted by the world around it, and taken on some humanity. Perhaps they see the magic of mankind, and see a greater potential. Though the entity behind the All-Black Shoggoth and the Audient Void itself is doing what it does purely for its own amusement.

The Shoggoth derives emotional pleasure and deep contentment from serving its master. However, it feels no sensual pleasure of its own unless ordered to. This is complicated somewhat by how the creature cannot directly copy the master's nerve endings, and requires a degree of study before it can properly replicate human female sexual organs. This process can be sped up rapidly if the Shoggoth has a "volunteer" to model itself off (it is usually wise if the volunteer is willing, if only to avoid trouble with the law). Once the copying is done, the Shoggoth can shape and reshape its organs as desired, and can increase or decrease its sensitivity at will. Some Shoggoths become oversexed from realigning themselves to derive sexual pleasure in following orders, and can literally work themselves into a nymphomaniac frenzy. As this experimentation tends to disrupt both their work and their shape (the phrase "melt into a puddle" is rarely so apt as in these cases), the Shoggoth usually discontinues it out of shame. The entity's breasts also become capable of lactation, though it requires more food if the milk is to have any consistent taste and nutritional value.

Whether the Shoggoth intends to or not, copying female sexual organs also means that the entire reproductive system is replicated. The entity then has a functional womb, and may indeed bear children. There is no risk of an unexpected pregnancy as the Shoggoth will only conceive if so allowed. Pregnant Shoggoths have little control over how many children they bear on the first pregnancy, but can change the number (and sex) desired with practice. Typical gestation lasts for ten months, during which the Shoggoth becomes ravenously hungry. It is advised that the master stock up well before even conception, as otherwise he will be eaten out of house and home. Labor and birth are painless, unless the Shoggoth wishes to experience travail, and even then the master must grant permission. The result is either a human boy or a Shoggoth (though rumors persist of Shoggoth-born human daughters), with the boy often possessing abnormal flexibility and a strong mind, and the Shoggoth girl having a much better grasp than her mother of the human shape in addition to a more willful streak. Both children will have partial access to the mother's ancient memories growing up, and the day a Shoggoth girl takes on the guise of a Frankian maid is a joyous occasion.

There's nothing simultaneously as sad and horrifying as a Shoggoth reacting to having harmed its master, methinks. All kinds of safeties are built into the Shog to prevent this sort of thing, but if even if it happens on accident the thing will blame itself. The humanoid shape dissolves into streaming eyes and wailing mouths, and the creature won't be "fixed" until the master assures it that no lasting injury was done. Comforting a weeping Shoggoth takes some fortitude, but you'd have to be pretty strong-minded already to take one on.
