Boulder shooting: Gunman opens fire inside King Soopers store

A shooter opened fire inside a King Soopers grocery store in Boulder on Monday afternoon, but there were few details hours after the first reports came in.
Authorities haven’t provided any information about possible deaths or injuries, or the status of the shooter. A news conference is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Video live-streamed by a bystander at the King Soopers at 3600 Table Mesa Drive showed what appeared to be shooting victims, and witnesses told The Denver Post of seeing at least one person who’d been shot.
That live-streamed video also showed a man wearing only shorts being removed from the store in handcuffs after police went in. One of his legs was covered in blood. It’s not clear if the man was a shooting suspect or whether he was arrested.

Sen. Ted Cruz rips Biden for hypocrisy on media blackout of border
This is outrageous
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is pressuring President Joe Biden to be more transparent with the media about the migrant crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border.
The White House faces criticism from reporters for restricting media access to Customs and Border Protection facilities that are housing thousands of unaccompanied migrant children. Last week, when Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas led a bipartisan delegation of lawmakers to tour the U.S. border, reporters were barred from covering their tour due to "privacy and COVID-19 restrictions."
More than 15,000 migrant children have been detained by the federal government, but the "crowded, makeshift conditions" these children were kept in were not reported until Monday when Axios obtained exclusive photos of kids being kept in cage-like "pods."
In a letter to the president, Sen. Cruz said it was "outrageous and hypocritical" of Biden to bar reporters from access to the situation at the border.
"As part of our oversight duties as Senators, I and 14 of my colleagues will travel to the border this week to talk to the brave men and women on the ground who are working every today [sic] to stop this crisis and secure our border," Cruz wrote.
"But it is not enough for members of the Senate to see what is happening — the American people must see. That is why I requested that members of the media be allowed to join us. But your administration clearly and emphatically refused to offer press access. This is outrageous and hypocritical."

More “COVID Suicides” Than COVID Deaths In Kids
Before Covid, an American youth died by suicide every six hours. Suicide is a major public health threat and a leading cause of death for those aged under 25 — one far bigger than Covid.* And it is something that we have only made worse as we, led by politicians and ‘the science,’ deprived our youngest members of society — who constitute one-third of the US population — of educational, emotional and social development without their permission or consent for over a year.
And why? For what?
We were scared. We were scared for our lives and those of people we love. And, like your average German-on-the-street in the 1930s and 40s, we believed that doing what we were told and supporting the national cause would save us and our families.
The reality is we sacrificed others without a second thought. We have sacrificed our youths’ lives and future livelihoods in a desperate attempt to save a slim minority of the elderly population who have surpassed the average US life expectancy of 78.8 years and those who were already on their way out…..
The biggest increase in youth deaths occurred in the 15-24 age bracket — the age group most susceptible to committing suicide, and which constitutes 91% of youth suicides. Indeed, as early as July 2020 — just four months into the pandemic — CDC Director Robert Redfield remarked that
there has been another cost that we’ve seen, particularly in high schools. We’re seeing, sadly, far greater suicides now than we are deaths from COVID. We’re seeing far greater deaths from drug overdose.
Although complete national suicide data for 2020 likely won’t be publicly available until 2022, Redfield’s claim is supported by the increase in calls and emails witnessed by mental illness hotlines.
Between March and August the National Alliance on Mental Illness HelpLine reported a 65% increase in calls and emails. The Trevor Project — which targets suicide prevention among LGBTQ youth — saw double its usual call volume. The jump in helpline calls hadn’t let up by the end of 2020: in November Crisis Text Line received 180,000 calls — its highest volume ever, and an increase of 30,000 from the previous month. Over 90% of those were from people under 35.
Such “deaths of despair” tend to be higher among youths, particularly for those about to graduate or enter the workforce.

British drugmaker AstraZeneca Plc may have provided an incomplete view of efficacy data on its Covid-19 vaccine from a large scale U.S. trial, the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) said on Tuesday, in a fresh setback to the shot.
AstraZeneca said a day earlier that its Covid-19 vaccine developed with Oxford University was 79% effective in preventing symptomatic illness in a large trial in the United States, Chile and Peru.
"The DSMB expressed concern that AstraZeneca may have included outdated information from that trial, which may have provided an incomplete view of the efficacy data," the U.S. agency said, referring to the independent Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB).
"We urge the company to work with the DSMB to review the efficacy data and ensure the most accurate, up-to-date efficacy data be made public as quickly as possible."what the hell does that mean?
The request cast doubts over the company's plan to seek US emergency use authorization for the vaccine in the coming weeks.
Authorization and guidelines for use of the vaccine in the United States will be determined by the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention after thorough review of the data by independent advisory committees, said the NIAID, part of the National Institutes of Health.
AstraZeneca did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

José Baselga, renowned cancer researcher and AstraZeneca oncology R&D head, dies at 61
José Baselga, a storied oncology researcher and pharmaceutical executive whose discoveries helped pave the way for new breast cancer therapies, died Sunday at the age of 61.
His death was confirmed by AstraZeneca, where Baselga had been serving as executive vice president for research and development in oncology. The company did not provide a cause of death; the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia reported it was Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a rare brain infection that causes degeneration and death.
Baselga had joined AstraZeneca two years ago, after his academic career ended amid a conflict-of-interest scandal at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
“An outstanding scientific leader, José leaves a lasting legacy in the scientific community and here at AstraZeneca,” company CEO Pascal Soriot said in a statement. Soriot added of Baselga, “His visionary leadership, deep scientific expertise and strategic insight have delivered so many achievements that we can all be proud of and that will benefit patients’ lives in the years to come.”
Anas Younes, who worked with Baselga in academia and at AstraZeneca and had known him since 1986, told STAT that Baselga was “ambitious, resilient, caring, brilliant — and joyful.”
“People don’t understand that — he was a really funny person to be around,” Younes said.
Baselga had both an M.D. and Ph.D., and his academic career included stops at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital in his native Spain, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Memorial Sloan Kettering, where he was ultimately chief medical officer and physician-in-chief.
During his career, Baselga was involved in the clinical development of multiple cancer therapies, including trastuzumab (also known as Herceptin), according to a biography from the American Association for Cancer Research. His scientific pursuits focused on finding therapeutic agents based on genetic mutations and molecular targets on tumors, and on investigating how cancers became resistant to treatment.
Baselga was best known as a breast cancer researcher, but in his leadership at MSKCC, he shaped scientific strategies across disease types, Younes said.
During his academic career, Baselga collaborated with and served as an adviser to startups as well as major pharmaceutical companies, which is common for investigators working on taking potential treatments from research labs into patients.
But in 2018, ProPublica and the New York Times reported that Baselga had failed to disclose receiving millions of dollars from drug and other health care companies in research articles he published in academic journals. Baselga told the news organizations the omissions had been unintentional.
Baselga resigned from MSKCC soon after, and in January 2019, joined AstraZeneca as the drug maker shifted more of its focus to cancer.
He is survived by his wife, Silvia, and four children.
“José was more than a colleague to me,” Soriot’s statement said. “He was a friend, and someone I immensely respected and cherished. I will enormously miss having him alongside me, and I will continue to be inspired by his work and vision.”

(ANSA) - SIRACUSA, MAR 12 - AstraZeneca Italia CEO Lorenzo Wittum is one of four people placed under investigation as a formality in the death of navy sub-lieutenant Stefano Paternò, who died three days ago near Catania a day after having his first COVID jab. The other three probed are a doctor and nurse in the military hospital where the jab was given and an emergency doctor.
Astrazeneca said Friday there was no evidence of increased risk of blood clots from the vaccine.
In all, three people including a Sicilian police officer and a Carbiniere have died after getting the vaccine in Italy.
Health ministry prevention chief Gianni Rezza urged people to avoid unjustified alarmism "because so far no causal link has been shown" between the three deaths and the Astrazeneca batch, which has been banned as a precaution.

Results from AstraZeneca's recent Covid-19 vaccine trial "may have included outdated information" that "provided an incomplete view of the efficacy data," a federal health institute said early Tuesday.
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases issued the unusual statement after AstraZeneca announced Monday that the trial showed no serious side-effects, and that it was 100 percent effective in stopping severe and fatal cases.
The __NIAID said that it had been notified late Monday about the "concern" by the
data and safety monitoring board,__ a panel of independent experts that reviews safety and efficacy data for vaccines in the United States.

Results from a large clinical trial in the United States and South America indicate that AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine, AZD1222, is well-tolerated and protects against symptomatic COVID-19 disease, including severe disease or hospitalization. The independent Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) overseeing the trial identified no safety concerns related to the vaccine. The United Kingdom-based global biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca developed the vaccine and led the trial as regulatory sponsor.
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response, provided funding support for the trial through the federal COVID-19 response.
The placebo-controlled trial began in August 2020. The analysis is based on results from 32,449 adult volunteer participants enrolled across 88 sites in the United States, Chile and Peru. One participant received a placebo for every two participants who received AZD1222, resulting in approximately 20,000 people receiving the investigational vaccine. The vaccine was administered as two doses of 5 x1010 viral particles four weeks apart.
AZD1222 demonstrated statistically significant vaccine efficacy of 78.9% in preventing symptomatic COVID-19 and 100% efficacy in preventing severe or critical disease and hospitalization.In participants 65 years and older, who comprised 20% of the trial population, vaccine efficacy against symptomatic COVID-19 was 79.9%.'''
The DSMB conducted a review of thrombotic events (blood clots) and cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) among participants and found no increased risk of these conditions in vaccinated participants.
Approximately 79% of participants were white, 22% were Hispanic, 8% were Black or African American, 4% were Native American, including American Indian/Alaska Native participants residing in the U.S., and 4% were Asian. Vaccine efficacy was consistent across ethnicity. Approximately 60% of participants of any age had underlying health conditions associated with an increased risk of developing severe COVID-19, such as diabetes, severe obesity or cardiac disease.
Authorization and guidelines for use of the vaccine in the United States will be determined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) after thorough review of the data by independent advisory committees. Today’s results build on data from multiple clinical trials of AZD1222 conducted worldwide. The World Health Organization has recommended use of the vaccine for prevention of COVID-19 in adults and it is currently available for use in more than 70 countries. The European Commission has granted a conditional marketing authorization for the vaccine in the European Union.
The current trial defined symptomatic COVID-19 as having SARS-CoV-2 infection and at least one respiratory symptom (pneumonia, shortness of breath or low oxygen requiring supplemental oxygen) or at least two of the following symptoms: fever, new or worsening cough, muscle pain, fatigue, vomiting and/or diarrhea, and loss of smell and/or loss of taste. Severe or critical COVID-19 was defined as having SARS-CoV-2 infection and any of the following: clinical signs of severe systemic illness, respiratory failure (defined as needing high-flow oxygen, noninvasive ventilation, mechanical ventilation or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, known as ECMO), evidence of shock, significant acute renal, hepatic or neurologic dysfunction, or admission to an intensive care unit or death.

AZD1222 was developed by Oxford University’s Jenner Institute and Oxford Vaccine Group and then licensed to AstraZeneca for further development. Representatives from AstraZeneca, NIAID and BARDA receive recommendations from the DSMB.
Sites that are part of the COVID-19 Prevention Network (CoVPN) enrolled volunteers in the clinical trial. The CoVPN is composed of existing NIAID-supported clinical research networks with infectious disease expertise and was designed for efficient and thorough evaluation of vaccine candidates and monoclonal antibodies for the prevention of COVID-19. CoVPN investigators Ann R. Falsey, M.D., professor of medicine, University of Rochester School of Medicine in New York, and Magdalena E. Sobieszczyk, M.D., associate professor of medicine at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, are coordinating investigators for the trial.

Since 1997, he has served as chair of the Department of Bioethics at The Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health.
- Atul Gawande, the Cyndy and John Fish Distinguished Professor of Surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Samuel O. Thier Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, and Professor of Health Policy and Management at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He previously served as a senior adviser in the Department of Health and Human Services in the Clinton administration.
- Celine Gounder, Clinical Assistant Professor at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine and cares for patients at Bellevue Hospital Center. From 1998 to 2012, Dr. Gounder studied TB and HIV in South Africa, Lesotho, Malawi, Ethiopia and Brazil. U.S. current account deficit hits 12-year high in 2020
The U.S. current account deficit raced to a 12-year high in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic severely disrupted exports and could remain elevated this year as an economic recovery driven by massive fiscal stimulus draws in imports. The Commerce Department said on Tuesday the current account deficit, which measures the flow of goods, services and investments into and out of the country, surged 34.8% to $647.2 billion last year. That was the largest shortfall since 2008-imagine that just as the markets came apart in the later half of 2008.
The current account gap represented 3.1% of gross domestic product last year, also the largest share since 2008 and up from 2.2% in 2019. The high current account deficit is likely not an issue for the United States, in part because of the dollar’s status as the reserve currency.
Economic growth this year is expected to top 7%, driven by the White House’s $1.9 trillion pandemic rescue package. That would be the fastest growth since 1984 and would follow a 3.5% contraction last year, the worst performance in 74 years. Exports of goods and services to, and income received from foreign residents dropped $578.3 billion to $3.23 trillion in 2020. Imports of goods and services from, and income paid to, foreign residents fell $411.3 billion to $3.87 trillion.
The trade deficit jumped to $681.7 billion in 2020 from $576.9 billion in 2019. In the fourth quarter, the current account gap widened 4.2% to $188.5 billion, the highest since the second quarter of 2007. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the deficit widening to $189.9 billion last quarter.
It represented 3.5% of GDP in the October-December quarter, up from 3.4% in the third quarter and was the largest share since the fourth quarter of 2008. Still, the deficit remains below a peak of 6.3% of GDP in the fourth quarter of 2005 as the United States is now a net exporter of crude oil and fuel.

Lira Plunge Squeezes Traders With Swap Rates Surging to 1,400%
International investors fleeing Turkish stocks and bonds have created a massive bottleneck in the market for liras.
As funds dump Turkish assets and receive liras in exchange, they’re also scrambling to unwind currency hedges – driving the cost of borrowing liras overnight on the offshore swap market to extreme levels. At one point on Tuesday, the rate reached as high as 1,400%, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. “As everyone tries to exit at the same time, it causes spikes in lira rates,” said Onur Ilgen, the head of treasury at MUFG Bank Turkey in Istanbul.
MUFG is Mitsubishi Financial Group and likely on the very wrong side of this.
Another reason behind the crunch: Turkey severely restricts how much banks can lend to foreign investors via swaps. The rules, which were imposed after the currency collapse of 2018, are designed to make it prohibitively expensive for anyone to short the lira during a time of crisis. They can also make trading difficult for investors with hedged lira positions.
Violent swings in Turkish markets have been unleashed this week after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan unexpectedly fired his central bank chief, sowing uncertainty about the country’s future monetary policy. Among investors, there are concerns that the central bank has lost credibility, and with inflation accelerating to almost 16% in February, the economy faces severe challenges. Just a few weeks ago, the lira was among the best-performing emerging-market currencies and investors were returning to Turkey on the belief that former central bank Governor Naci Agbal’s policies could bring inflation under control. Now the big question is whether the country will once again embark on a path of cutting rates, how quickly it might happen.
As investors hunt for lira to close the swaps, some of the demand showed up in the local spot market. The currency was only 1% weaker at 7.8808 against the dollar on Tuesday – a sign of stability after yesterday’s 8% plunge.
Still, many analysts are unconvinced that the losses are over. Renaissance Capital predicts the currency could slide a further 12% by year-end, while Commerzbank AG expects it to reach 10 per dollar.

U.S. Post Office unveils 10-year financial plan, with aim to breakeven by fiscal 2023
The U.S. Postal Service unveiled Tuesday a 10-year plan, with a goal of returning to financial sustainability and achieve "service excellence," while maintaining its seven-day package delivery, and six-day mail delivery, service. As part of the plan, the Post Office aims to operate at breakeven by fiscal 2023, which would eliminate a projected $160 billion in losses over the next 10 years, while at least meeting, if not exceed, its goal of 95% on-time delivery. The plan includes the generation of $24 billion in revenue from enhanced package delivery services for business customers, such as same-day, one-day and two-day delivery options, aligning pricing to reflect market dynamics, and improving cash flow to allow for $40 billion worth of upgrades in workforce, new vehicles, improved post offices and technology improvements. "The need for the U.S. Postal Service to transform to meet the needs of our customers is long overdue," said Postmaster General Louis DeJoy.

AstraZeneca Admits Vaccine Efficacy Based On "Interim" Data, Vows To Release Update Within 48 Hours

Update (0800ET): As the media (and the rest of the world) tries to figure out what exactly is going on with the AstraZeneca trial data, and whether the vaccine's ability to protect the population from COVID truly does outweigh the risks, the company has just released a statement promising to release up-to-date results from the final phase of the trial within 48 hours.
AZ said yesterday's trial conclusions were based on an "interim analysis" with all data received by the cutoff date of Feb. 17. Then, it promised to "immediately engage with the independent data safety monitoring board to share our primary analysis with the most up to date efficacy data." Results of this primary analysis will be available within 2 days.
The numbers published yesterday were based on a pre-specified interim analysis with a data cut-off of 17 February.
We have reviewed the preliminary assessment of the primary analysis and the results were consistent with the interim analysis. We are now completing the validation of the statistical analysis.
We will immediately engage with the independent data safety monitoring board (DSMB) to share our primary analysis with the most up to date efficacy data.
We intend to issue results of the primary analysis within 48 hours.
More academics complained about the optics of the situation.
"The last thing this vaccine needs is more concern when we kind of thought we were at that point now where we would put to bed all the other concerns," said Paul Griffin, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, who is conducting clinical studies in Australia on four Covid-19 vaccine candidates.
And reporters complained that AstraZeneca's explanation, and the whole back-and-forth between Astra and the NIH, seemed bizarre.

The efficacy rate in the US trial was stronger than the 70% figure AstraZeneca reported from an earlier study. But those data were an average of different readings (62% and 90%) from two separate arms of the study. Bottom line: Whatever the 'final' efficacy number is, it should probably be taken with a grain of salt.
To that point, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nominal head of the NIAID, insisted that, in all likelihood, the AstraZeneca jab is "very likely a very good" vaccine. This is presumably just another in a seemingly endless stream of hiccups.

Translation: the US will follow through with plans to approve the AstraZeneca jab (after a notably lengthy delay) - but turn around and give all the AZ jabs it has on hand to Mexico and other governments.
Pretty soon, maybe AstraZeneca can stop blaming European governments for stoking skepticism about the company's COVID jab, and start blaming the US (or maybe the drugmaking giant might consider accepting some responsibility, considering the reaction to rare blood clots isn't the first safety issue to mar the jabs reputation).
One day after proclaiming to the world that an extremely thorough and credible study based in the US (but carried out both in the US and across South America) had shown its jab to be 79% effective at preventing COVID (and 100% effective at preventing serious cases of the virus-caused disease) US officials are slamming the drug company and the data for possibly misrepresenting the vaccine's efficacy.
Earlier Tuesday morning, US officials issued an unusual statement expressing concerns the company had included "outdated information" from its study and that it may have provided "an incomplete view of the efficacy data." The concern, according to the Data and Safety Monitoring Board (the group responsible for overseeing trials of new medication and vaccines), is that the report included "outdated information" which may have provided "an incomplete view" of the efficacy data.

Myanmar coup latest: Junta to retain internet curbs to ensure 'rule of law'

10:20 p.m. A 7-year-old girl has been shot and killed in Mandalay, Reuters reports, citing people working for a funeral service. According to the report, witnesses say the girl was shot in her home when security forces opened fire in the area.
9:20 p.m. A fire at a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh has killed at least 15 people and left more than 560 injured and an estimated 400 people missing, the United Nations Refugee Agency says. The fire broke out yesterday at the Kutupalong Balukali refugee camp in Cox's Bazar, according to UNHCR. "At least 10,000 shelters are estimated to have been destroyed or damaged, but figures are expected to climb in the coming days as assessments continue," according to the agency. "Refugees who have been displaced are being temporarily accommodated within the camp community."
3:30 p.m. Myanmar's military rulers have no immediate plans to lift restrictions on the internet because violence in the country is being provoked online, a junta spokesman says. Most important to the country is the rule of law and stability, so the internet will be restricted for "a certain time period," spokesman Zaw Min Tun told a news conference. "I think the Japanese government has some kind of power – diplomatic and economic and also political. Soros philanthropic group demands release of staff member held in Myanmar

(Reuters) - The Open Society Foundations, a philanthropic organisation founded by billionaire George Soros, called on Tuesday for the immediate release of a staff member held in Myanmar and said allegations of financial misconduct were false.
State media in Myanmar reported that authorities had detained an official from the Open Society Myanmar and were looking for 11 other employees on suspicion the group passed funds to opponents of a Feb. 1 coup.
“The Open Society Foundations are deeply concerned by reports that an OSM (Open Society Myanmar) staff member has been detained in Myanmar,” Open Society Foundations said in an emailed statement.
“We call for her immediate release. We are alarmed by reports that authorities are seeking to interrogate other staff members.”
Opponents of military rule launched a civil disobedience movement (CDM) of strikes to press the generals to reverse their coup, to free detained government leader Aung San Suu Kyi and to recognise her party’s Nov. 8 election victory.
The military has responded with a crackdown on pro-democracy protests, killing more than 180 people, a human rights group said, while taking legal action against Suu Kyi and others.
The Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper, which has been for years a mouthpiece of the military, said OSM transferred funds without seeking permission from the Foreign Exchange Management Department.
The group then exchanged $1.4 million into Myanmar’s kyat currency “without following the necessary rules and regulations”, the paper said.
“Claims of financial misconduct, including that OSM acted illegally by withdrawing their own funds in local currency from the SMID bank, are false,” Open Society Foundations said.
“Claims that OSM used these funds for illegal purposes are false. These funds were used for purposes fully within the objectives of OSM.”
The Global New Light of Myanmar paper suggested that unidentified non-governmental organisations were “providing cash assistance to CDM movements”.
The paper said the finance officer of Open Society Myanmar, Phyu Pa Pa Thaw, had been interrogated since last Friday about “that cash flow into the CDM movement”.
Authorities were looking for 11 other OSM employees to interrogate them, it added.
“These allegations suggest a worrying attempt to attack and discredit those who wish for a return to peace and democracy in Myanmar,” The Open Society Foundations said.
The Open Society Foundations says it is the world’s largest private funder of independent groups working for justice, democratic governance, and human rights.
It provides grants through a network of national and regional foundations and offices, funding an array of projects.
It says the Myanmar foundation supports “civil society and groups representing marginalized people to encourage a representative democracy to take root”.
Authoritarian governments regularly attack Soros and his organisation for its work, and he has been the target of conspiracy theories and social media misinformation for years.
The newspaper published a picture of Suu Kyi meeting Soros in 2016 in New York and of her meeting his son, Alexander Soros, in Myanmar, but it did not link Suu Kyi or the Open Society Foundations to any alleged irregular transfer of funds.

Police investigate reports of armed person at Yountville Veterans Home
The Napa County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday asked people to avoid the area by the Yountville Veterans Home because authorities as they respond to reports of an armed person at the massive facility.
The California Highway Patrol said the agency received a report of what appeared to be a woman at the veteran's home with what the caller described as a shotgun.
That prompted the CHP and multiple other law enforcement departments to respond and conduct an "extensive search" on ground and in the air to try to find the possible suspect. The CHP said at this time there have been no reports of any shots fired or any additional reports of the person.
The veterans home was the site of a deadly shooting three years ago.
The sheriff's alert came just before 8:30 a.m.
Jestina Connors told KTVU that her mother, Suzanne Connors, who is a nearly 20-year veteran receptionist at the veterans home, called her this morning about 7:30 a.m. to say she was holed up in her office. She and her mother were both on campus three years ago, when a former Army infantryman shot and killed three staff members at a veterans center in Yountville before killing himself was upset about his treatment and talked about shooting employees "several times" before the killings.
Connors said she was delivering her mother lunch that day and this incident is bringing back terrible memories.
Her mother has since been evacuated to a nearby church on campus and has been told to shelter in place.
The two have been texting nonstop to keep each other updated on what's going on.

BOULDER, Colo. – Dozens of agencies, including the FBI and ATF, are investigating Monday’s mass shooting at a King Soopers grocery store in Boulder.
Ten people including a police officer were killed in the massacre and the suspected shooter was taken into custody alive.
He has been identified as Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, 21, of Arvada–he has been charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder.
Police say the Boulder County Coroner’s Office worked overnight to identify all of the victims and notify the next of kin.
The last victim was removed from the scene at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. By 2:02 a.m., all of the victims had been identified. By 3:59 a.m., the families of the victims had been notified.

Kent Taylor, founder and CEO of the Texas Roadhouse restaurant chain, died by suicide Thursday after suffering from severe post-COVID symptoms, according to a statement from the company. He was 65.
“Kent battled and fought hard like the former track champion that he was, but the suffering that greatly intensified in recent days became unbearable,” the statement read.
The statement said Taylor experienced severe tinnitus — among other symptoms — following a COVID-19 diagnosis. Tinnitus is a common condition involving ringing or other noises in one or both ears, and experts say coronavirus can exacerbate existing tinnitus problems.

Fed sets up panels to examine risks that climate change poses to the financial system
The Federal Reserve has taken another step forward in efforts to ensure that the financial system is protected against climate risks.
As the central bank turns its attention increasingly toward the matter, the Fed has created a Financial Stability Climate Committee and a Supervision Climate Committee. The panels will focus on “the potential for complex interactions across the financial system,” Fed Governor Lael Brainard said in remarks Tuesday. “Climate change and the transition to a sustainable economy also pose risks to the stability of the broader financial system. So a second core pillar of our framework seeks to address the macrofinancial risks of climate change,” Brainard added.
The Supervision Climate Committee will focus on identifying risks and putting together a program to address them. The Financial Stability Climate Committee will address “macroprudential risks” for how climate could pose systemic risks to the institutions the Fed supervises. While taking on the climate issue represents a broadening of the Fed’s role in supervising banks and other financial institutions, officials have stressed the potentially damaging impact weather-related events can have on the system. The central bank had begun asking large institutions to assess the potential impact of climate and how they are prepared to weather significant events. Brainard was the first Fed official to start talking about the issue, saying in late 2019 that she wanted her colleagues to begin considering how climate events could impact monetary policy.
“Financial market participants that do not put in place frameworks to assess and address climate-related risks could face significant losses on climate-sensitive assets caused by environmental shifts, by a disorderly transition, or both,” Brainard said. At a hearing Tuesday before the House Financial Services Committee, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell faced questions about whether the central bank ought to be involved in the matter.
For his part, Powell has indicated that climate change is not central to the Fed’s mission but is nonetheless important. “It’s really very early days of trying to understand what this all means. It clearly can have longer-term implications for our economy, our financial system and the people who we all serve,” Powell said. “It’s early days, but we feel like we have the responsibility to start the process of understanding” the risk. Powell said the look into climate change’s impact is part of making sure institutions are “resilient” in the face of risks.

Officials in Boulder, Colo., have publicly identified the suspect and victims in Monday's mass shooting that left 10 people dead at a supermarket in the Denver suburb.
At a press briefing Tuesday morning, Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold fought back tears as she read aloud the names and ages of those killed:

Teri Leiker had spent the last 30 years working at the King Soopers grocery store in Boulder, Colorado—and “it was her favorite thing to do.”
The 51-year-old, described as the “most selfless, innocent” person, loved working—a fact even more tragic considering that same grocery store became the site of a mass shooting on Monday in which Leiker and nine others were tragically gunned down.
“To think Teri was murdered while simply doing her job angers me. The fact that a man decided to take away so much from so many in a matter of seconds angers me,” Lexi Knutson, a friend, said in a touching Facebook post on Tuesday. “If you think we don’t need any sort of gun reform, you’re wrong. We can’t go to movie theaters without fear. We can’t go to school without fear. We can’t go to music events without fear. Now add going to the grocery store to that list.”

Dimon, Fink And Other CEOs Beg New York Lawmakers Not To Raise Taxes
Wall Street executives and other New York employers have begged Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) and other state lawmakers not to raise taxes, warning that they could cause high-income earners who left the state during the COVID-19 pandemic to stay away permanently. At least 250 business leaders were joined by JPMorgan's Jamie Dimon, Citigroup's Jame Fraser, Morgan Stanley's James Gorman and BlackRock's Larry Fink in a letter to Cuomo and other lawmakers, which argues that a series of tax increases proposed by Democratic leaders in the state Assembly would "jeopardize New York’s recovery from the economic crisis inflicted by COVID-19," and were rendered moot by the $1.9 trillion federal relief bill passed earlier this month, according to the letter.
New York State is slated to receive $12.5 billion in unrestricted payments under the new stimulus package, as well as billions more for health and education programs, and a boost in revenue payments which would allow the state to avoid planned spending reductions of $3.7 billion. The proposed package would increase income taxes and levying a new surcharge on capital gains.
The highest-earning 5% of tax filers in the state account for more than 60% of the roughly $50 billion that New York raises each year in state income taxes. The executives said remote-working patterns during the pandemic meant many of the financial, real estate and legal professionals in this group may permanently leave the tax base if proposed taxes are approved. -WSJ "Many members of our workforce have resettled their families in other locations, generally with far lower taxes than New York, and the proposed tax increases will make it harder to get them to return," wrote the executives. "This is not about companies threatening to leave the state; this is simply about our people voting with their feet." According to Kathryn Wylde, president of Partnerrship for New York City and a signatory to the letter, said that Cuomo has been a force of 'fiscal moderation' during his time in office. "It’s obvious that there’s great concern among business leadership that the governor is in a weakened state because of the supermajorities that Democrats have in both houses of the Legislature," Wylde told the Journal.
The letter comes amid crisis for Cuomo, who is currently under an impeachment investigation into accusations that he sexually harassed a slew of women - which comes on top of a scandal over how his administration stuck COVID-positive patients in nursing homes, where the most vulnerable population lives. According to Freeman Klopott, spokesman for the state budget office, the Cuomo administration is focused on the economy and "putting out the welcome mat for the New Yorkers who left during the pandemic." On Monday, Cuomo and state Budget Director Robert Mujica said that budget negotiations were ongoing between executive and legislative aides, with Mujica notably vague on how the state's improving fiscal picture - and federal stimulus windfall - would affect taxation. In January, Cuomo proposed a $193 billion budget which raises $1.5 billion through a temporary tax-surcharge on those who make over $5 million in income. "As of right now we have the resources necessary so that there would be no cuts in the governor’s budget, so you wouldn’t require any significant level of tax increases to pay for the restorations," Mujica said Monday.
