Hypersonic weapons of various types of basing will comprise the backbone of Russia’s non-nuclear deterrence forces, Russian Defense Minister Army General Sergei Shoigu said at an annual operational and mobilization gathering of commanders on Tuesday.

"The potential of non-nuclear deterrence forces, primarily, precision weapons, is being strengthened. Hypersonic systems of various basing will comprise their backbone," the defense chief stressed.

As the Russian defense minister said, "the Army and the Navy are constantly fulfilling tasks that require commanders to have a profound command of the situation, knowledge of the capabilities of their forces and resources, a creative approach and a reasonable initiative."

The professional level of Russian officers is constantly improving as well as the quality of the fulfillment of tasks by military command centers while the combat experience is being timely put into practice, Shoigu said.

As the Russian defense chief recalled, "a lot of methods and techniques of combat operations that were not used previously were implemented during the operation in Syria." "It is necessary to improve them and use them in the training of headquarters and troops," Shoigu stressed.

As the Russian defense chief said, "the peacekeeping operation in Nagorno-Karabakh has also confirmed the high skills of the Armed Forces’ command."

Defense Ministry’s work

The Russian Army and Navy continue developing consistently, the combat readiness of the country’s nuclear triad is being maintained at a high level and its components are being upgraded in a balanced manner. The latest missile systems outfitted with the advanced weapons of breaching anti-ballistic missile defenses are assuming combat duty while military science is developing new methods of troops’ employment, proceeding from the forecasts of the nature of armed conflicts and local wars and the prospects of the emergence of weapons in foreign armies based on new physical principles, the Russian defense chief said.

According to the defense minister, "robotized systems, unmanned aerial vehicles and automated command and control systems are being used increasingly widely in combat training."

"Last year, we fulfilled the order by the supreme commander-in-chief given in the May 2012 decree: the share of advanced armament and military hardware in the troops amounted to 70.1%," Shoigu stressed.

"Now it is necessary to provide for introducing artificial intelligence technologies into the armament that defines the future outlook of the Armed Forces," the defense chief said.

Lead House impeachment manager Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) lied in his opening statement Tuesday and said the Democrats’ case is “based on cold, hard facts.”

The move gave Mr. Durham independence from a possible Biden administration and made it very difficult for a new attorney general to end his investigation, all but ensuring the Durham inquiry would live on after Mr. Trump left office.

“In advance of the presidential election, I decided to appoint Mr. Durham as a special counsel to provide him and his team with the assurance that they could complete their work, without regard to the outcome of the election,” Mr. Barr wrote in a letter that he submitted to Congress in December.

Dozens of Mr. Trump’s U.S. attorneys have already resigned, in the weeks before and after the election, leaving those offices in the hands of acting officials. While Mr. Durham and several more U.S. attorneys are expected to join them this week, that cohort will not include the leaders of the largest, most prominent federal prosecutor’s offices: Audrey Strauss, the U.S. attorney in Manhattan, who was appointed to her position by the courts, and Michael R. Sherwin, the U.S. attorney in Washington, who is an acting official and was not confirmed by the Senate.

Both Ms. Strauss and Mr. Sherwin were elevated to their roles amid upheaval and controversy that stemmed from Mr. Barr’s handling of politically delicate cases involving Mr. Trump.

Ms. Strauss was made the acting U.S. attorney after her boss, Geoffrey S. Berman, angered the White House with his handling of cases against Mr. Trump’s associates and ultimately refused to leave when Mr. Barr tried to replace him. The standoff between the two men ended when Mr. Barr allowed Ms. Strauss, a registered Democrat, to lead the office. Federal judges in her district, exercising a rarely used power, formally appointed her to the position in December.

Mr. Sherwin was tapped to lead the Washington office after his predecessor was removed amid a contentious decision by Mr. Barr to force prosecutors to lower a sentencing recommendation for one of Mr. Trump’s allies, Roger J. Stone Jr. Mr. Sherwin has since emerged as the face of the Justice Department’s sprawling investigation into the Jan. 6 siege of the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob.

Thrombocytopenia has occurred after other shots, but it is exceedingly rare and not yet clear whether vaccines could cause it

At least 36 people have developed a rare, life-threatening blood disorder, called thrombocytopenia, after receiving either of the two COVID-19 vaccines authorized in the US.

One of them, Miami obstetrician Dr Gregory Michael, died after thrombocytopenia caused his platelets to drop to virtually zero. He was just 56 and died of a brain hemorrhage just 16 days after receiving Pfizer's shot.

And doctors ordered Luz Legaspi, 72, not to leave her bed for over a week, for fear a bump, bruise, fall or other minor injury could lead to a similar hemorrhage and prove fatal for her.

Thrombocytopenia has been seen after other vaccines as well, and experts suspect that the shot does act as a trigger in some way - they just don't know why yet.

But so far, the platelet-suppressing condition appears exceedingly rare - affecting just 36 people out of 43 million doses administered in the US - and scientists theorize that only a small fraction of the population may have some predisposition that could lead vaccines to trigger the blood disorder.

Of 15 people included in a forthcoming study, only one had a recent history of low platelet counts, and there were no clear common threads that predict who might be the very few to develop thrombocytopenia after vaccination.

But with the exception of Dr Michael, all others so far have recovered after treatment.

It is common for new presidents to replace U.S. attorneys en masse, and the request for resignations has long been expected. But Mr. Durham’s and Mr. Weiss’s investigations had created delicate situations for the Biden administration, which is seeking to restore the Justice Department’s image of impartiality.

Ahem. The reason Durham got appointed to the special-counsel position is because of a lack of impartiality during the Obama-Biden administration. Durham’s probe involves the partisanship and politicization of the FBI and DoJ during Operation Crossfire Hurricane and the FBI’s potential spying on a major-party presidential candidate. Don’t forget that Durham’s case potentially includes Joe Biden directly, with his White House meeting in January 2017 suggesting the use of the Logan Act to go after Michael Flynn. If Biden removed Durham at this point, especially with the public record of Crossfire Hurricane already at its present stage, it wouldn’t suggest “partiality” — it would smell of a cover-up.

That’s even more obviously true with Weiss, whose investigation involves the Biden family directly. The DoJ’s Hunter Biden probe got partially exposed by the New York Post before the election and confirmed shortly afterward by William Barr. Unlike with Durham, Barr chose not to make Weiss a special counsel, leaving the decision whether to cut him loose to Biden, but that would smack not just of a cover-up but nepotism as well.

The Biden team has clearly conceded (at least to themselves) that they have to live with these probes, at least for now. Perhaps they’re betting that Hunter’s clean and Durham doesn’t have much of a case. That may be a safe bet, considering that both probes have been ongoing for more than a year and neither have produced much in the way of indictments, let alone convictions. (Kevin Clinesmith got probation for falsifying a FISA court submission in a plea deal stemming from Durham’s probe, but so far that’s it.) Canceling either or both might create more political damage than whatever they produce. At least, that’s what the White House hopes.
