Media blames Trump and 'white supremacy' for Reddit-inspired stock surges

While one might think that wanting to screw over those in power may be as old as power itself, Chris Cillizza seems to believe that this behaviour was invented by Trump.

The price of GameStop stocks have surged in recent days after a group of Redditors on the subreddit r/wallstreetbets sought to take advantage of the peculiar stock position facing the company. The company's stocks were shorted by more than 100 percent, meaning that there was more money placed in bets that the stock price would go down then there was money in actual stocks of the company.

The sudden surge bewildered journalists and angered Wall Street executives, with many from the latter group calling for the government to intervene in what they described as stock "manipulation." Many of the Redditors involved have suggested that the reason they have been criticized in such a way was because they are ordinary people who managed to take a toll on the profits of the powerful.

Journalists, seeking to defend the powerful on Wall Street, have taken a different route, scrambling to link the sudden surge in stock prices to their favourite boogeymen – Donald Trump and white supremacy.

Jen Psaki On GameStop Stock Surge: ‘We Have The First Female Treasury Secretary’

At her daily White House press conference Wednesday afternoon, Psaki responded to questions over whether the administration might get involved in the ongoing stock surge by noting that they’d just hired Janet Yellen as Treasury Secretary.

“Is the White House concerned about the stock market activity we’re seeing around GameStop and now some other stocks as well?” one reporter asked Psaki. “Have there been any conversations with the SEC about how to proceed?”

“Well, I’m also happy to repeat that we have the first female Treasury secretary and a team that’s surrounding her and often questions about markets,” Psaki replied.

She continued by noting that the White House would send reporters to the Treasury for comment, “but our team is, of course, our economic team, including Secretary Yellen and others, are monitoring the situation.”

When asked about the steep stock Dow decline, Psaki responded with a confusing excuse.

“It is a good reminder that the stock market is not the only measure of the health of our economy,” she said, “and it does not reflect how working and middle-class families are doing.”

The GameStop stock surge, of course, appears to be built on the day-to-day financial dealings of non-professional traders.

DOJ charges 'social media influencer' with 2016 plot to 'deprive individuals of their right to vote'

Individual allegedly tweeted meme urging users to vote by text.

The Biden Justice Department on Wednesday announced that it has charged Florida man in connection with using "various social media platforms" to "disseminate misinformation designed to deprive individuals of their constitutional right to vote."

The department in a press release said it had charged 31-year-old Douglass Mackey with "election interference" due to his deployment of a meme in 2016 directing users to cast their vote via text.

Mackey, who in 2018 was identified by Huffington Post as the user behind the infamous alt-right Twitter account Ricky Vaughn – and who regularly used that account to spread antisemitic and racist memes – allegedly advised Twitter users to text their 2016 vote via phone, which the DOJ said in its complaint constituted "criminal infringement of the right to vote."

The specific statute under which Mackey has been charged makes it a crime to "conspire to injure, oppress, threaten, or intimidate any person … in the free exercise or enjoyment of any right or privilege secured to him by the Constitution or laws of the United States."

Mackey faces a maximum 10 years in prison if convicted on the charges.

John Kerry reemerges on the political scene to mandate new climate policy.

Longtime Democratic politician John Kerry emerged Wednesday to speak alongside White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki and climate czar Gina McCarthy about the administration's ambitious plan to address climate change.

Kerry — a former senator and Obama administration secretary of state who has largely remained absent from the political scene these last four years — has rejoined his party in Washington to represent the American effort to reduce oil, gas and coal pollution on the world stage.

During the briefing, Kerry, now White House climate envoy, spelled out why and how, in the administration's view, the threats posed by climate change are issues of national security that must promptly be addressed by U.S. intelligence, defense, and homeland security agencies.

Kerry, the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee, said all 17 U.S. intelligence agencies will be involved in commissioning a national intelligence estimate on the security implications of climate change.

Last week, Biden signed an executive order killing the Keystone XL oil pipeline and, with it, a projected thousands of U.S. jobs.

The coal industry, which former President Trump helped protect by rolling back Obama-era energy regulations, also stands to suffer significant job losses under the Biden administration's climate plan.

Kerry on Wednesday suggested that fossil fuel industry workers make "better choices" and become solar power and wind turbine technicians.

"There's a lot of money to be made in the creation of these new jobs in these new sectors," he said, while saying those in the fossil fuel industry were misled by Trump about reviving that sector.

"Unfortunately, workers have been fed a false narrative, no surprise, for the last four years," Kerry said. "They've been fed that somehow dealing with climate is coming at their expense."

Today's orders out of the White House expand on the president's executive action last week to rejoin the Paris climate agreement.

Federal agencies will now be directed to "eliminate fossil fuel subsidies as consistent with applicable law and identify new opportunities to spur innovation, commercialization, and deployment of clean energy technologies and infrastructure," according to the White House statement.

Maricopa County officials on Wednesday decided to approve unanimously a plan to hire two preferred firms to audit election equipment used during the 2020 presidential election.

GOP State senators vowed to continue their push to perform their own forensic audit.

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on Jan. 27 to hire two firms to audit election equipment and software used in the November election, but a key member of the state Senate who has demanded access to election machines and data to conduct his own review is not satisfied.

The board acted after months of unsubstantiated claims of fraud from some Republicans who question President Joe Biden’s victory in Arizona.

The Republican-dominated board defended the accuracy of the county’s election results while acknowledging that a full audit may help dispel what members called “disinformation” about their accuracy.

Board member Clint Hickman, a Republican who has defended the results from attacks by backers of former President Donald Trump, said he welcomes the participation of the Legislature, Secretary of State and governor in the audit process.

“We don’t need to be defensive,” Hickman said. “This board has had nothing to hide.”

The state Senate has issued several subpoenas to the board and county recorder, seeking access to its voting machines, copies of all ballots and much more so it can perform its own audit. The board has fought those requests, saying they were overly broad, while trying to negotiate a settlement with the Senate.

Sen. Warren Peterson, a Republican who chairs the Judiciary Committee with Senate President Karen Fann and issued the most recent subpoenas, said the county’s audit will not satisfy him.

“A county audit will not prevent the Senate from doing their own audit,” Peterson said. “My concern with the county audit is that the scope of the audit is an inch deep. With the limited scope, they have asked to be audited, they are guaranteed to find nothing.”

Under pressure: Tech companies are facing immense political scrutiny for the role social media platforms played in the insurrection at the Capitol.

Dozens of Democrats last week called on Facebook and other social media companies to overhaul their recommendations and algorithms to reduce the spread of incendiary, divisive and violent content on their platforms. The lawmakers railed against the companies, saying that by creating a “digital echo chamber,” they had contributed to the radicalization of those who stormed the Capitol.

"Perhaps no single entity is more responsible for the spread of dangerous conspiracy theories at scale or for inflaming anti-government grievance than the one that you started and that you oversee today as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer,” they wrote in a letter to Zuckerberg.

The issue has also drawn bipartisan concern. A group of Senate Republicans and Democrats in 2019 teamed up on legislation to require platforms to give users the option of experiencing sites without algorithmic recommendations.

Biden administration delays Chinese military investment ban

Move by US Treasury will give new president more time to review Donald Trump’s China policies

The US Treasury has delayed the implementation of a ban on Americans investing in companies with suspected ties to the Chinese military, which had been imposed by Donald Trump after he lost the presidential election.

Mr Trump in November issued an executive order that barred Americans from investing in Chinese companies included in a Pentagon blacklist of groups that might threaten US security. The Trump administration set a January 28 deadline for the ban to take effect, but the Biden administration on Wednesday said that it would extend the date to May 27.

The move comes as the new administration starts reviewing actions that Mr Trump took against China, including putting dozens of Chinese companies on Pentagon and commerce department blacklists that ban investments in those groups or make it harder to export technology to them.

The Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, or Ofac, granted the extension by issuing what it calls a “general licence”. The Trump administration earlier this month had issued a licence that pushed the deadline from January 11 into the second week of the Biden administration.

John Smith, a former Ofac head, said the Trump team had also created confusion because the ban applied to companies with the same name as the groups on the Ofac list — which was derived from the Pentagon list — and companies with “closely” matching names.

The language, which was not accompanied by any clear guidance, meant financial institutions faced the task of having to sift through hundreds and possibly thousands of companies that could be possible sanctions targets.

“Industry very quickly made it clear to Ofac and the US government that the situation was unworkable,” said Mr Smith, a partner at Morrison & Foerster.

“Instead of admitting that it had adopted an unworkable standard, the Trump administration issued a general licence to provide a break for a couple of weeks that would stick it to the Biden administration, which would have to clean up the mess.”

Daniel Tannebaum, a former Treasury official, said the extension would give the Biden team time to assess the policy and to remove some of the confusion that arose during the final weeks of the Trump administration.

“It gives the new administration time to potentially clean up an action that created significant market confusion. General licences are a common method of tweaking sanctions programmes after their implementation to manage against initial unanticipated consequences,” said Mr Tannebaum, a sanctions expert and partner at Oliver Wyman.

Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, this week said the new Biden administration was conducting a series of “complex reviews” of Mr Trump’s China-related policies, but would proceed with “an approach of patience”, suggesting it would take time before the new team decided which measures would be kept and which would be amended or reversed.

“That means we’re going to have consultations with our allies, we’re going to have consultations with Democrats and Republicans, and we’re going to allow the inter-agency process to work its way through to review and assess how we should move forward with our relationship,” Ms Psaki said.

Roger Robinson, a former NSC official who argues that the US should take more aggressive action to prevent American investors from being able to invest in Chinese companies, said he hoped the new administration realised what was at stake during its review.

“Hopefully, the new administration appreciates the need to preserve capital markets sanctions as a key part of their toolkit for dealing with Chinese corporate national security and human rights abusers and protecting American retail investors,” said Mr Robinson, who runs RWR Advisory Group, a research and risk consultancy.

Employees of the voting machine company Dominion are vanishing. At least, their LinkedIn profiles are. Since election day, at least 100 of 243 Dominion workers were deleted. When people noticed that, it didn’t take long to realize that “all their software engineers are in Serbia.” Hmmm.

Rush to delete data at Dominion

The American public is demanding to know exactly why there is such a rush to delete personal information profiles of Dominion employees from LinkedIn. It makes nervous voters wonder what they have to hide.

Until election day, virtually every employee of the firm proudly shared their credentials and biographies with the world. Suddenly, in the wake of election fraud accusations, “Over 40% of Dominion’s employees with profiles on LinkedIn” have “eliminated their profiles from the social media giant.” Why?

Rosie Memos wants to know, “why are all the Dominion people deleting their profiles on LinkedIn?” Also, it “looks like all their software engineers are in Serbia. Nothing could go wrong.”

The Gateway Pundit did some research and came up with a comparison chart where they note, “Here is a list of some of those profiles before they were taken down.” They also mention, “Also of note was that all their software engineers were located in Serbia.

This is the company that managed the vote counting process and reported vote tallies in the 2020 US election.”

Voting machines, it turns out, and the code to run them, both firmware and software, don’t come from a particularly secure source. According to ComputerWorld, “Voting machines are privately manufactured and developed and, as with other many other IT systems, the code is typically proprietary.” Dominion keeps it tightly secret. Just like the Facebook and Google display algorithms, nobody outside the company has any idea what all that code really does.

Ideally, the code used to program voting machines, including Dominion machines, should be freely available for anyone to look at. That way flaws can be detected and repaired before they are exploited.

The Open Source Election Technology Foundation is fighting hard for an “election system that shifts from proprietary, vendor-owned systems” to one owned “by the people of the United States.” That isn’t doing much good now though.

Dominion claims they “develop” their systems in the U.S. and Canada. They just happen to have “an office in Belgrade, Serbia.” They recently ran an ad to hire “four senior software developers in Belgrade.” Firm spokesman Chris Riggall (allegedly his real name) admits, “some of our software development is undertaken outside the U.S. and Canada, specifically, in Serbia, where we have conducted operations for 10 years.”

Dominion insists they take measures “to ensure the accuracy, integrity and security of the software we create for our products.” Do they also build in back-door features? Election officials in Michigan admitted “that 6,000 Trump votes were entered by mistake for Biden, due to a ‘software error.’

The same software is associated with ‘bugs’ in Georgia.” Just by coincidence, “The company is part of a globalist network. The lobbyist of that company is the assistant of Nancy Pelosi, the leader of the Democrats in the Congress.

The Clinton Foundation is also connected with the company.” That makes Americans feel much more secure. Secure in the idea that they stocked up on ammo long before summer.

he U.S. Department of Justice has announced that three people connected with a paramilitary organization called the Oath Keepers have been indicted for conspiring to obstruct Congress and other charges in connection with the chaos at the U.S. Capitol on January 6.

"Jessica Marie Watkins, 38, and Donovan Ray Crowl, 50, both of Champaign County, Ohio; and Thomas Caldwell, 65, of Clarke County, Virginia, were indicted today in federal court in the District of Columbia on charges of conspiracy, obstructing an official proceeding, destruction of government property, and unlawful entry on restricted building or grounds, in violation of 18 U.S.C. §§ 371, 1512, 1361, and 1752," according to a DOJ press release. "According to the charging documents, Watkins, Crowl, and Caldwell communicated with each another in advance of the Jan. 6, 2021, incursion on the U.S. Capitol and coordinated their attack," the release also notes.

"According to the indictment, the three defendants initiated their communications and coordination in November 2020 and continued through on or about Jan. 19, 2021, when Caldwell was arrested. The exchanges vary in topics from a call to action to logistics, including lodging options, coordinating calls to discuss the plan, and joining forces with other Oath Keeper chapters. On Dec. 31, 2020, Caldwell posted, “THIS IS OUR CALL TO ACTION, FREINDS! SEE YOU ON THE 6TH IN WASHINGTON, D.C. ALONG WITH 2 MILLION OTHER LIKE-MINDED PATRIOTS.” In a subsequent post on Jan. 2, 2021, Caldwell stated, “It begins for real Jan 5 and 6 on Washington D.C. when we mobilize in the streets. Let them try to certify some crud on capitol hill with a million or more patriots in the streets. This kettle is set to boil…”

Watkins shared a video in which she was in the Capitol—the video included the caption: “Yeah. We stormed the Capitol today. Teargassed, the whole, 9. Pushed our way into the Rotunda. Made it into the Senate even. The news is lying (even Fox) about the Historical Events we created today.”

In a Facebook post Caldwell wrote: "We are surging forward. Doors breached[.]"

The FBI obtained audio of Watkins and others speaking on Zello during the Jan. 6 episode. The DOJ said that the indictment alleges that Watkins in a recording said, "We have a good group. We have about 30-40 of us. We are sticking together and sticking to the plan."

Japan's main parties agree to withdraw coronavirus punishments from law revision proposals

Japan's main ruling and opposition parties have agreed that proposed new punishments that were set to be included in a bill to revise the infectious disease control law as part of coronavirus measures will be withdrawn, it has emerged. An agreement to remove the criminal penalty provisions was reached on the morning of Jan. 28 at a meeting in the National Diet building between the diet affairs chief of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, Hiroshi Moriyama, and his main opposition counterpart Jun Azumi of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan.

Punishments of imprisonment and penalty fines will both be removed from the revision proposals.

The LDP apparently compromised on the controversial issue after the main opposition party had been opposed to the criminal penalties.
