9 states considering permitless concealed gun carry bills
Republican lawmakers in nine states are considering bills to change existing gun restrictions by letting people carry concealed weapons without requiring a permit.
Following the lead of 15 states that already allow concealed carry without a permit, legislation aiming to relax the rules has been introduced in Utah, Montana, Tennessee, Texas, South Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Alabama and Georgia, Fox News reported.
To obtain a concealed carry permit, most states mandate that individuals undergo background checks and weapons training, but pro-gun groups and lawmakers claim the requirements undermine Second Amendment rights.

The Woman Accused Of Stealing Pelosi’s Laptop Says She Doesn’t Have It
Riley June Williams’ lawyer says the allegations against her are all lies told by a vengeful ex.
After a long hearing in federal court in Washington, DC, on Tuesday, the case of Riley June Williams — a 22-year-old Pennsylvania woman accused of stealing, or helping to steal, a laptop from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office and sell it to Russia’s foreign intelligence service — is more confusing than ever.
According to a statement of facts compiled by the FBI, a “former romantic partner” of Williams called the agency and alleged that Williams took the laptop during the storming of the US Capitol and “intended to send the computer device to a friend in Russia, who then planned to sell the device to SVR, Russia’s foreign intelligence service.” The FBI added that the tipster said the sale fell through for “unknown reasons” and that Williams either still has the device or destroyed it. (Pelosi’s office has confirmed the laptop is missing, though one of her staffers tweeted two days after the insurrection that it was “only used for presentations.”)
But during the hearing Tuesday, the purpose of which was to set the conditions of her house arrest, her defense attorney, federal public defender A.J. Kramer, argued that Williams’ house and her car had been searched, and she did not have the laptop.
“In the allegation of the theft of the computer, she’s charged with aiding and abetting, not the actual theft itself,” Kramer said during the hearing. “In fact, [law enforcement] searched everywhere, and she does not have the computer. They searched the car and the house.”
Following the hearing, Kramer told BuzzFeed News over the phone that Williams denies all of the accusations made against her — from the theft itself, including aiding or encouraging the theft, to the allegations of attempting to sell it to Russia — and alleged that they were all lies all made up by an ex who, as he said in the hearing, “vowed revenge on Williams for various things.” Williams has filed for a restraining order against that ex, Kramer added.
Kramer added that he “thinks” that Williams never had the laptop at all. The Justice Department declined to comment on this suggestion.

DC National Guard commander says Pentagon restricted his authority before riot
Pentagon officials restricted the commander of D.C. National Guard’s authorities ahead of the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol, the commander told The Washington Post in an interview published Tuesday.
Normally, a local commander would be able to make decisions on taking military action in an emergency when headquarters approval could take too much time.
But Maj. Gen. William Walker, the commanding general of the D.C. National Guard, told the Post the Pentagon took that power away from him ahead of the Capitol riot, which meant he could not immediately deploy troops when the Capitol Police chief called asking for help as rioters were about to breach the building.
“All military commanders normally have immediate response authority to protect property, life, and in my case, federal functions — federal property and life,” Walker told the Post. “But in this instance, I did not have that authority.”
Instead, Walker needed approval from then-Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy and then-acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller before deploying troops.
Asked how quickly guardsmen could have arrived at the Capitol, which is two miles from the D.C. National Guard's headquarters, without the higher-level approval, Walker told the Post, "With all deliberate speed — I mean, they’re right down the street.”
The restriction was placed on Walker after the Guard’s heavy-handed and widely criticized response to racial justice protests over the summer. In June, hundreds of guardsmen from around the country poured into the nation's capital at former President Trump’s request, despite objections from local authorities.
A National Guard helicopter also hovered low over protesters as a show of force, a move that drew widespread scrutiny and rebuke.

The House Appropriations Committee was set to receive closed-door testimony Tuesday from McCarthy and Walker as it probes security failures that led to the Capitol riot.
Pentagon officials, local D.C. authorities and the Capitol Police have traded accusations about who is to blame for the Guard’s slow response once rioters breached the Capitol. The Pentagon has said Capitol Police denied offers of Guard assistance in the days before the attack. A Pentagon timeline of events says it took roughly an hour and a half to approve the Guard’s deployment on Jan. 6 after requests were made by Capitol Police and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D).
Also under scrutiny in the Pentagon’s response is the phone call in which then-Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund requested assistance. Sund previously told the Post that Army staff director Lt. Gen. Walter Piatt said on the call he didn’t like the “visual” of the Guard policing the Capitol, a comment Piatt initially denied before backtracking last week.
Walker told the Post there was discussion of optics but said he could not attribute the comments to a particular person.
“There was some talk about optics, but I can’t assign that to one person,” Walker said. “From the Army leadership, there were quite a few people on the call. … It’s clear that somebody talked about the optics. Who said that? I’m not sure.”

Poland Urges U.S. to Regulate Big Tech, ‘Every Citizen Must Be Protected’ from Censorship
Poland’s Deputy Justice Minister has called on the U.S. to protect “every citizen” from Big Tech censorship on social media, as his own country prepares new laws enforcing free speech standards online.
Polish lawmaker Sebastian Kaleta said it was “disturbing” that “Christian or patriotic content” was increasingly being branded as “hate speech” by the Big Tech firms which dominate social media, and that the public discourse should not be controlled by “anonymous moderators”.
Mr Kaleta explained that while other European countries, such as Emmanuel Macron’s France and Angela Merkel’s Germany, are already regulating Big Tech in a way that allows them to “force social media to delete some content”, Poland is approaching the online public square from the opposite direction, with legislation “to prevent legal content from being censored”.
The minister told American broadcaster Glenn Beck that “Many publishers, many politicians right now are interested in our concept, because we saw that freedom of speech is in danger and we want to protect it,” referencing the mass banning of former U.S. President Donald Trump ahead of Joe Biden’s inauguration and Poland’s own dark history of censorship under Communism.
While many conservatives say they accept the right of tech giants to ban, shadowban, and restrict or remove the content of social media users, if reluctantly, because they are “private companies”, Mr Kaleta compared them to, among other things, the telephone networks.
These also started out as private enterprises, he argued in his podcast interview, but evolved into regulated public utilities with democratically accountable oversight as their use became ubiquitous — and it would not be considered acceptable to ban people from using telephones for expressing the “wrong” opinions while using them.
“There are many dangers in Big Tech companies which we should face,” he said, expressing concern at the creation of “monopolies” from which “every citizen must be protected; the rights of every one of us should be protected… to preserve democracy itself.”
Mr Kaleta had previously elaborated on these points in an article for Newsweek, recalling how “Poland suffered under Soviet-imposed Communism for 45 years and endured decades of censorship” and was therefore “particularly sensitive to any attempts to curtail freedom of speech.”

Literary agent fired for having an account on Gab and Parler
Users of alternative tech are now being targeted by cancel culture.
Colleen Oefelein, a former agent at The Jennifer De Chiara Literary Agency, was fired after Twitter users complained that she was using anti-big tech platforms Gab and Parler.
Yesterday, the anonymous Twitter account YA Whispers tagged The Jennifer De Chiara Literary Agency and quote tweeted one of Oefelein’s tweet threads from November 2020 where she announced:
“I’m now also posting on Parler. It’s a great platform with no censorship! Giving away a few critiques there next week. Come find me.”
YA Whispers branded Gab and Parler “alt-right” and asked The Jennifer De Chiara Literary Agency whether it knows or cares that one of their agents frequents these platforms.
On the same day, the agency’s president and founder, Jennifer De Chiara responded to the tweet, thanked YA Whispers, and revealed that Oefelein had been fired.
In a series of followup tweets, De Chiara wrote that the agency was “distressed to discover this morning, January 25th, that one of our agents has been using the social media platforms Gab and Parler. We do not condone this activity, and we apologize to anyone who has been offended or affected by this.”
She added: “The Jennifer De Chiara Literary Agency has in the past and will continue to ensure a voice of unity, equality, and one that is on the side of social justice.”
These tweets from De Chiara didn’t point to any issues with Oefelein’s posts on Gab and Parler – just the fact that she had an account on these platforms and the potential that people could be “offended or affected” by the existence of these accounts.
Parler was taken offline on January 10 so it wouldn’t have even been possible for De Chiara to review Oefelein’s Parler posts if she only discovered the existence of Oefelein’s Parler account on January 25. And Oefelein currently only has one post on Gab which is identical to the pinned tweet on her Twitter account.
Oefelein confirmed that she had lost her job and wrote that she was fired for being “a Christian and a conservative.”
The firing of Oefelein represents an escalation in cancel culture. Instead of being targeted for expressing a specific viewpoint, Oefelein appears to have been targeted simply because she maintaining a presence on growing platforms which are becoming increasingly necessary as Big Tech companies continually decide to be arbiters of truth.

Virginia Rule Allowing Late Ballots Missing Postmark Was Illegal, Court Rules
The Virginia Board of Elections rule allowing officials to count ballots that arrived without a postmark up to three days after the election was illegal, a state judge ruled.
Virginia Circuit Court Judge William Eldridge ruled the state’s late mail-in ballot law violated state statute and permanently banned the law in future Virginia elections, the Public Interest Legal Foundation announced Monday.
The Public Interest Legal Foundation sued the state’s board of elections in October on behalf of Thomas Reed, a Frederick County, Virginia, election official.
“This is a big win for the Rule of Law,” J. Christian Adams, Public Interest Legal Foundation president and general counsel, said in a statement. “This consent decree gives Mr. Reed everything he requested—a permanent ban on accepting ballots without postmarks after Election Day and is a loss for the Virginia bureaucrats who said ballots could come in without these protections.”
The board of elections proposed the rule during an Aug. 4 meeting and related guidance was sent to election officials statewide on Aug. 13 informing them of the change. The Public Interest Legal Foundation sued on behalf of Reed on Oct. 9, according to a news release.
On Oct. 28, one week before the Nov. 3 federal elections, Eldridge blocked the law due to The Public Interest Legal Foundation lawsuit. Virginia was therefore prevented from counting late ballots without postmarks, Public Interest Legal Foundation spokesperson Logan Churchwell told The Daily Caller News Foundation.
“Mr. Reed has a straightforward request. Follow the law,” Adams said after the Public Interest Legal Foundation filed the lawsuit.
Eldridge ruled that existing Virginia state law prohibited ballots without postmarks from being counted, according to a consent decree he signed.
Existing law says that “any absentee ballot returned to the general registrar after the closing of the polls on Election Day but before noon on the third day after the election and postmarked on or before the date of the election shall be counted.”
The court ruling will affect the upcoming November 2021 Virginia gubernatorial and House of Delegates elections.

On Tuesday, Facebook suspended Robert A.J. Gagnon, a prominent Christian scholar on the topic of Bible sexuality, for 7 days. His crime? Speaking out against transgender ideology and President Joe Biden’s new transgender military policy. Facebook claimed that Gagnon’s criticism of this government-imposed ideology violated the platform’s “Community Standards on violence and incitement.”
Ironically, Gagnon’s post drew attention to Facebook’s suspension of his friend, Laurie Higgins, who got a 7-day ban for criticizing Biden’s policy.
“There was absolutely no incitement to violence on our part. We abhor violence done to any person,” Gagnon told PJ Media on Tuesday. “This is just a thinly veiled and pathetic excuse for censorship of any critical views toward trans-tyranny over our consciences, religion, and reason.”
“Only one point of view is being allowed,” he added, ominously. “Trump was not the great danger to the Republic. Left-wing canceling is.”
Gagnon, who holds a Ph.D. in Pauline theology and sexuality from Princeton Theological Seminary, has published “The Bible and Homosexual Practice: Texts and Hermeneutics.” He teaches as a professor of New Testament Theology at Houston Baptist University.
In the post Facebook flagged, Gagnon had defended Higgins’ response to Biden’s pro-transgender military policy.

Goldman Sachs' chief executive David Solomon will get a $10m (£7.3m) pay cut for the bank's involvement in the 1MDB corruption scandal. 1MDB was an investment fund set up by the Malaysian government that lost billions due to fraudulent activity. The global web of fraud and corruption led to a 12-year jail term for Malaysia's ex-prime minister Najib Razak which he is appealing.
Goldman Sachs called its involvement in the scandal an "institutional failure". Goldman Sachs helped raise $6.5bn for 1MDB by selling bonds to investors, the proceeds of which were largely stolen.
Prosecutors alleged that senior Goldman executives ignored warning signs of fraud in their dealings with 1MDB and Jho Low, an adviser to the fund. Two Goldman bankers have been criminally charged in the scandal.
Mr Solomon's pay would have been $10m higher but for the actions its board of directors took in response to the 1MDB saga, Goldman Sachs said on Tuesday.
While disclosing his salary dropped to $17.5m for 2020, the bank stressed that Mr Solomon he was unaware of the corruption.
He was not "involved in or aware of the firm's participation in any illicit activity at the time… the board views the 1MDB matter as an institutional failure, inconsistent with the high expectations it has for the firm". Mr Solomon's package consists of $2m in cash base pay, a $4.65m cash bonus, and $10.85m in stock-based compensation.
In October, Goldman agreed to pay nearly $3bn to government officials in four countries to end an investigation into work it performed for 1MDB. The bank collected $600m for arranging the bond sales in 2012 and 2013. It has spent years being investigated by regulators across the globe including those in the US, UK, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong.In total, Goldman's dealings with 1MDB cost the bank more than $5bn. Despite the costs and fines from the fallout from the 1MDB scandal, 2020 was a bumper year for Goldman's businesses with annual revenue of $44.6bn, its highest since 2009.

Woah. I just had an insane thought.
Granted, this is just me thinking on my feet at this very moment, because it just occurred to me, BUT…
There was this group called the "Transition Integrity Project" that formed before the election last year and it was headed up by people like Rosa Brooks, Max Boot, Podesta, etc., and they were gaming out what would happen after four different potential outcomes of the election.
One of said outcomes was in the case of a Trump victory, Biden would also declare himself president and a coalition of states (California, Washington, and Oregon) would secede and form their own.
Well… Trump just formed the "office of the former president" right?
Perhaps he's starting to consider doing his own thing?
Idk.
I mean… what's good for the goose, right?
Maybe it's time for mom and dad to divorce, before it gets even more messy. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

GameStop’s rocketship saw new heights as it blasted past the $80 USD mark to settle at $150, even trading over $200 USD after hours.
With the unprecedented surge propelled by WallStreetBets and YOLO traders, many traditional investment firms that shorted on GME were caught off guard. One of those institutions, Melvin Capital Management, lost big and required a $2.75 billion USD cash infusion from hedge fund companies Citadel and Point72.
This sort of “David versus Goliath” story has been met with mixed feelings, while the larger players have been losing millions from the short squeeze, a lot of clandestine traders have been profiting from the chaos — even seeing one trader turn his $55,000 USD position to $22 million USD. A lot of casual traders are also using this opportunity to not only ride the wave but to also stick it to Wall Street for past bailouts and corruption — making good/bad use of their stimulus cheques. Eric Schmidt and others call for U.S.-China tech "bifurcation"
A new set of proposals by a group of influential D.C. insiders and tech industry practitioners calling for a degree of "bifurcation" in the U.S. and Chinese tech sectors is circulating in the Biden administration. Axios has obtained a copy.
Why it matters: The idea of "decoupling" certain sectors of the U.S. and Chinese economies felt radical three years ago, when Trump's trade war brought the term into common parlance. But now the strategy has growing bipartisan and even industry support.
The report, called "Asymmetric Competition: A Strategy for China & Technology," was authored by an informal working group formed last summer with 15 participants writing in their private capacities, including:
Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google and technical adviser at Alphabet, and co-founder of Schmidt Futures. (Google exited China in 2010 while Schmidt was CEO).
Jared Cohen, CEO of Jigsaw, a tech incubator created by Google, and former adviser to Condoleezza Rice and Hillary Clinton.
Richard Fontaine, the CEO of the Center for a New American Security, whose co-founder Kurt Campbell now occupies a top position on Biden's National Security Council.
Liz Economy, China scholar at the Council on Foreign Relations and Stanford University's Hoover Institution.
Alexandr Wang, CEO and founder at Scale AI.
Marissa Giustina, a quantum electronic engineer at Google.
What they're saying: "America’s technological leadership is fundamental to its security, prosperity, and democratic way of life. But this vital advantage is now at risk, with China surging to overtake the United States in critical areas," the authors write.
The report "advances policies that position the United States to out-compete China without inviting escalatory cycles of confrontation, retaliation, or unintended conflict."
The nature of the challenge, according to the report:
The competition is "asymmetric," meaning "China plays by a different set of rules that allow it to benefit from corporate espionage, illiberal surveillance, and a blurry line between its public and private sector."
We're heading towards somewhat tech spheres. "Some degree of disentangling is both inevitable and preferable," the authors write. "In fact, trends in both countries — and many of the tools at our disposal — inherently and necessarily push toward some degree of bifurcation." That's because the alternative to bifurcation is a world in which China's non-democratic norms have "won."
There will be trade-offs, such as between "creating risk-tolerant research environments that encourage innovation versus security/espionage risks."
Their proposed solutions:
The creation of a national tech analysis and forecasting center.
Building more resilient supply chains by investing in domestic infrastructure and "ally-centric production."
Improving education and reducing immigration bottlenecks to ensure a strong supply of highly skilled labor.
A government redesign across the executive branch to guide a "new era of technological statecraft."
New multilateral initiatives, including an alliance of democracies called the "T-12" to coordinate responses to tech competition, an "International Technology Finance Corporation," and the creation of "multilateral trust zones" where integration can be safely achieved.
What to watch: Whether or not the proposal gets traction in the Biden administration, its emphasis on multilateralism fits with the administration's goals and priorities.
