Demonstrators in major cities demand the national day be changed in honour of the country’s Indigenous people.

Police made arrests in Australia on Tuesday as thousands of people defied public health concerns and protested against the mistreatment of Indigenous people on the day marking the 1788 arrival of the British First Fleet.

For many Indigenous Australians, who trace their lineage on the continent back tens of thousands of years, the Australia Day holiday is known as Invasion Day symbolising the destruction of their cultures by European settlers.

In Sydney, Indigenous groups called for protests to demand the national day be changed, although state health officials have refused to make an exemption to social-distancing rules to allow for crowds of more than 500 people.

Police have warned protesters could face fines and imprisonment for breaching public health orders designed to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Images published by news organisations as well as on social media showed police dragging several protesters away from the march in Sydney.

‘One Voice’

In Melbourne, rally organisers said protesters would be sorted into groups of 100 people with 10 metres (30 feet) between each to comply with social-distancing rules.

Images posted on social media, however, showed a larger group of masked protesters gathered at one of the major intersections of the city. They held up their fists in the air and chanted: “One Voice”.

Thousands of people, many unmasked, also showed up in Hobart, the capital city of the southern island of Tasmania.

Australia has fared better than most other developed economies in the pandemic, with just under 28,800 cases and 909 deaths, mostly in Victoria state. Victoria recorded its 20th straight day on Tuesday with no local transmission.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Australia Day represents how far the country has come since the First Fleet arrived.

“There is no escaping or cancelling this fact,” Morrison said at a ceremony in Canberra. “For better and worse, it was the moment where the journey to our modern nation began.”

Anthony Albanese, leader of Australia’s Labor Party, said that the country has to acknowledge that its history “doesn’t date back to 1788. It dates back more than 65,000 years.

“Australia Day means different things to different people. For me, it’s a chance to acknowledge the past, recognise the present, and hope for the future.”

Grace Tame, who was declared as Australian of the Year on Monday, also weighed in expressing her support for a change of date of national day.

“It costs us nothing as a nation to actually change that date. And it would mean a lot to that community and to our national community. I think that’s important,” she said in an interview with The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald newspapers.

A speaker at a massive Invasion Day protest in Sydney says there is only one real way to make sure white Australians pay for what they’ve done.

Peaceful protests calling for a change to the January 26 Australia Day holiday turned ugly as police clashed with protesters and, on one occasion, a protester was forcefully removed by bikies.

Thousands gathered for Invasion Day protests in Australia’s capital cities and in regional centres.

After hours of speeches at the Domain in the Sydney CBD, where police told protesters they could gather but not march, a number of protesters were arrested.

In Canberra, a man wearing a Make America Great Again cap and waving an Australian flag was forcibly removed from an Invasion Day rally by three men in bikie colours.

As he drove away, the assembled crowd cheered.

In Melbourne, thousands marched from Parliament House down Bourke Street after a peaceful protest in which police refused to remove their hats, a stance in line with police procedure.

The clash between police and protesters at the Domain in Sydney followed a warning from police.

“If you do the right thing, I’ll do the right thing,” an officer told an organiser as 3000 people gathered.

NSW Police said five people were arrested including an 18-year-old man who was not part of the gathering.

One man was charged with assaulting police and one woman was charged with hindering police in the execution of duty.

Two other men were each fined $1000 and released.

Among protesters in Sydney was Paul Silva, the nephew of David Dungay Jr, a Dunghutti man from Kempsey, who died in prison custody in 2015.

“I’m here to demand the abolishment of Australia Day,” he told news.com.au.

Earlier, in the Sydney suburb of Newtown, a fresh mural painted by acclaimed street artist Scott Marsh emerged at first light.

It shows Scott Morrison dressed as Captain James Cook next to two words, “Captain Cooked”, and the hashtag #ChangeTheDate.

Donald Trump announces new 'Office of the Former President'

He has only been out of the White House for a few short days - but Donald Trump has already shown he won't be quietly retiring from public life.

Former President Donald Trump has given his first public update since leaving the Oval Office, announcing the establishment of his new "Office of the Former President".

The office will be managed by ex-White House aides from Palm Beach, Florida.

The news was confirmed via an email statement, the first from Mr Trump since Joe Biden took over the top job.

The statement revealed the new office “will be responsible for managing President Trump’s correspondence, public statements, appearances, and official activities” – a clear sign the 74-year-old isn’t planning on quietly retiring from public life.

An article of impeachment against former President Donald Trump has been formally presented to the US Senate but it's looking unlikely the trial will succeed.

At least 17 Republicans would need to vote in favour of finding Mr Trump guilty in order for him to be convicted.

According to a survey done by The New York Times, so far none were indicating they would support the impeachment.

There were 27 senators who were opposed, 16 undecided and seven had no response.

However, this could change as evidence is presented during the trial, which is due to start on February 8.

India permanently bans TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps

India's ministry of electronics and information technology has issued fresh notices to make permanent a ban imposed on video app TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps in June, Indian media reported late on Monday.

When it first imposed the ban, the Indian government gave the 59 apps a chance to explain their position on compliance with privacy and security requirements, the Times of India reported on Monday. The companies, which include ByteDance's popular video-sharing app TikTok, Tencent Holdings' WeChat and Alibaba's UC Browser, were also asked to respond to a list of questions, the newspaper said. "The government is not satisfied with the response/explanation given by these companies. Hence, the ban for these 59 apps is permanent now," business newspaper Livemint quoted a source familiar with the notices as saying. It said the notices were issued last week.

The ministry's June order stated that the apps were "prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order." The order, which India referred to as a "digital strike", followed a skirmish with Chinese troops at a disputed Himalayan border site when 20 Indian soldiers were killed. In September, India banned another 118 mobile apps, including Tencent's popular video game PUBG, as it stepped up the pressure on Chinese technology companies following the standoff at the border. A TikTok representative told the Economic Times newspaper that the company was evaluating the notice and will respond to it as appropriate.

The ministry of electronics and information technology could not be reached for comment outside regular working hours. TikTok did not respond to a request for comment.

Some questions seemed to be answered when he broke his uncharacteristic post-presidency silence to endorse Kelli Ward’s reelection bid to gain a second term as the Arizona Republican Party Chairwoman.

Following President Trump’s endorsement, Ward’s reelection was a success. She won 51.5% of the vote, with another Trump ally earning 48.5%.

This move appears to have been foreshadowed by former Trump adviser Jason Miller, who indicated that President Trump would use his time out of office to advocate for election integrity across the country, and would use his dynamic influence to campaign for candidates willing to enact his agenda.

It is also worth noting that there is a similarity in naming conventions between the Office of the Former President, which President Trump established today, and the fictional Office of the President-Elect that Joe Biden claimed to represent during two month period that President Trump contested the 2020 election. Biden’s fictional office was widely mocked by conservatives.

It remains unclear if President Trump is planning a return to presidential politics in 2024.

The second impeachment aimed at convicting former President Trump of “inciting a riot” is also a way to keep him from running again.

The office gives the ex-president a formal vehicle to coordinate future public appearances, statements and official activities. The office might be especially valuable since he is banned from the social-media outlets he had used to great effect while president.

China Admonishes US Navy For South China Sea Carrier Patrol

The United States often sends ships and aircraft into the South China Sea to “flex its muscles” and this is not good for peace, China’s Foreign Ministry said on Monday, after a U.S. aircraft carrier group sailed into the disputed waterway.

The strategic South China Sea, through which trillions of dollars in trade flows each year, has long been a focus of contention between Beijing and Washington, with China particularly angered by U.S. military activity there.

The U.S. carrier group led by the USS Theodore Roosevelt and accompanied by three warships, entered the waterway on Saturday to promote “freedom of the seas,” the U.S. military said, just days after Joe Biden became U.S. president..

“The United States frequently sends aircraft and vessels into the South China Sea to flex its muscles,” the foreign ministry spokesman, Zhao Lijian, told reporters, responding to the U.S. mission.

“This is not conducive to peace and stability in the region.”

China has repeatedly complained about U.S. Navy ships getting close to islands it occupies in the South China Sea, where Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei and Taiwan all have competing claims.

The carrier group entered the South China Sea at the same time as Chinese-claimed Taiwan reported incursions by Chinese air force jets into the southwestern part of its air defense identification zone, prompting concern from Washington.

China has not commented on what its air force was doing, and Zhao referred questions to the defense ministry.

He reiterated China’s position that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and that the United States should abide by the “one China” principle.

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen visited a radar base in the north of the island on Monday, and praised its ability to track Chinese forces, her office said.

“From last year until now, our radar station has detected nearly 2,000 communist aircraft and more than 400 communist ships, allowing us to quickly monitor and drive them away, and fully guard the sea and airspace,” she told officers.

Taiwan’s defense ministry added that just a single Chinese aircraft flew into its defense zone on Monday, an anti-submarine Y-8 aircraft.

Biden’s new administration says the U.S. commitment to Taiwan is “rock-solid.”

The United States, like most countries, has no formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan but is the democratic island’s most important international backer and main arms supplier, to China’s anger.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler pepper-sprays man who confronted him over not wearing a mask

According to a police report, Portland Democrat Mayor Ted Wheeler pepper-sprayed a person who accosted him while he was leaving a restaurant on Sunday night. This is the second time this month that Wheeler has been accosted while dining out.

Wheeler was leaving the McMenamins Hillsdale Brewery & Public House in Portland with around 8 pm Sunday night with former Mayor, and new administration hire, Sam Adams “when a person confronted him and accused him of sitting in a restaurant without wearing a mask,” according to the report.

In Multnomah County, outdoor dining is allowed and Wheeler and Adams had been eating in an outdoor tent at the restaurant and that he tried to explain to the man that people in Oregon were allowed to removed their masks for dining.

The mayor described the alleged assailant in the report as a middle-aged, white male. He allegedly followed Wheeler to his car and videoed the encounter.

According to the report, Wheeler said he told the man he was carrying pepper spray and to “back off,” but the man refused.

Wheeler claimed in the report that “He had no face mask on and got within a foot or two of my face while he was videoing me. I became imminently concerned for my personal safety, as I had recently been physically accosted in a similar situation. In addition, I was concerned about contracting COVID given that he was right in my face and he was not wearing a face mask.” Wheeler also said he did not recognize the individual.

As Wheeler began to climb into his car, he pepper-sprayed the man in the eyes….

African-Americans experience larger unemployment shocks and the effects of these shocks on unemployment are more persistent. Conditional on the same race, the shocks for women are smaller. The effects on life expectancy and death rates are more severe for African-Americans, overall.

Alas, the time to fix this is gone as Deutsche Bank's Jim Reid previously noted, the die has already been cast and it is now far too late.

Google Workers Announce International Union Alliance

Google workers across the world are reportedly forming a global union alliance called “Alpha Global” with the goal of holding Google and parent company Alphabet accountable.

The Verge reports that Google workers worldwide are coming together to form a global union alliance called Alpha Global. The group is comprised of 13 different unions representing workers in 10 different countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland.

The announcement comes shortly after Google employees in the U.S. and Canada announced the Alphabet Workers Union. The union is associated with the Communications Workers of America and has grown from 230 members to more than 700 within a week.

Alpha Global is affiliated with the UNI Global Union which is a labor union federation representing 20 million workers worldwide, including Amazon workers. Parul Koul, executive chair of the Alphabet Workers Union and a Google software engineer, said in a statement:

We know that organizing for justice at a global company like Alphabet does not stop at national boundaries.

That is why it is so important to unite with workers in other countries. In a world where inequality is tearing apart, our societies and corporations are hoarding more influence than ever, reclaiming our power through our unions has never been more important.

UNI general secretary Christy Hoffman commented:

The problems at Alphabet — and created by Alphabet — are not limited to any one country, and must be addressed on a global level.

The movement launched by tech workers at Google and beyond is inspiring. They are using their collective muscle to not only transform their conditions of employment but also to address social issues caused by increasing concentration of corporate power.

Fionnuala Ní Bhrógáin, an organizer with the Communications Workers’ Union in Ireland, said in a statement:

The power of these global tech companies is such that they’re in every part of our lives. If they’re acting in this way nearly entirely unchecked by governments then there is no hold on what they can do. That power needs to be checked, and it’s only through collective action that workers are able to do that.

Alpha Global is another sign that tech worker unionization efforts are accelerating globally. With Google and Amazon facing worker unionization, many other high tech companies may face the same problem.

National Guard forces in D.C. drew down from nearly 26,000 for President Joe Biden’s inauguration Jan. 20 to about 13,000 over the weekend, said Army Gen. Daniel Hokanson, the chief of the National Guard Bureau. They are expected to draw down to the about 7,000 troops by the end of the week.

Most of the remaining troops — many of them armed — will provide security at the Capitol as the FBI has warned officials of several forthcoming demonstrations that they are concerned could turn violent.

Army Maj. Gen. William Walker, the D.C. National Guard commander,declined to provide specifics about the potential threat, but he said law enforcement officials were keeping the Guard abreast of any threats to troops in the area.

According to Forbes,the Supreme Court intends to hear the cases but "on a slower timeline after Inauguration Day, which would be too late for the court to potentially grant the plaintiffs' requests for the court to overturn the election results."

The Forbes revealed that there are 63 post-election cases filed by Trump and the GOP that were "either lost in court or withdrew, according to a tally kept by Democratic Party attorney Marc Elias, and they only netted one minor win."

Forbes stressed thatpeople should watch out for the fact that "the court has still not yet issued a decision on whether they'll take up full consideration of a case concerning Pennsylvania's mail-in deadline allowing ballots to arrive after Election Day," which "could affect how future elections are run" even though it may not actually overturn the results of the election.Forbes stated that the Pennsylvania results only differed by 10,000 ballots should the court actually consider the case.

China Repo Rates Soar To 15 Month High After PBOC Warns Of Asset Bubbles, Drains Liquidity

China’s money market rates surged after the People’s Bank of China drained cash from the financial system, just as a central bank adviser warned about bubbles in markets.

The overnight repurchase rate soared 28 basis points to 2.77%, the highest since October 2019, and just a month after it hit a record low. At the same time, the cost on 7-day repurchase agreements jumped 36 basis points to 2.79%. Earlier in the day the PBOC withdrew a net 78 billion yuan via open-market operations, the most in two weeks. It wasn't just the PBOC's liquidity drain however: the rate spike was also catalyzed by a stark warning from PBOC adviser Ma Jun, who spoke at a wealth management forum where according to the 21st Century Business Herald said bubbles have formed in the stock and property markets, and he proposed a shift in monetary policy.

"Whether this situation will intensify in the future depends on whether monetary policy is appropriately changed this year,” he said. He added that if not, such problems would “certainly continue” and lead to “greater economic and financial risks in the medium- and long-term." He also said that there will be less demand for monetary expansion as corporate profits will improve, reducing their reliance on debt financing. To be sure, Chinese regulators have already moved to constrain rising property prices. They limited the amount banks can lend to the sector at the end of last year and are targeting leverage among the country’s vast developers. Individual cities have also introduced measures to curb prices.

In late 2020, PBoC restrictions on short-term liquidity led to a surge in interbank borrowing costs. The three-month Shanghai interbank benchmark more than doubled between May and November to more than 3 per cent — its highest level in two years — before it gradually declined. Then China’s markets soared at the end of last year from a barrage of liquidity injections by the central bank, helping stocks and the yuan end 2020 on a high note. The benchmark CSI 300 Index has since risen to the highest level since 2008.

“The PBOC is unlikely to loosen its purse strings at least this week, which will make cross-month liquidity very tight,” said Xing Zhaopeng, an economist at Australia & New Zealand Banking Group. In this context it is hardly a surprise then that after the warning and liquidity drain, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index — which has been boosted this month by record-breaking daily volumes of buying by mainland investors — fell by more than 2.4%. Mainland China’s CSI 300 index of Shanghai- and Shenzhen-listed stocks dropped 2%.

The mood is still totally remaining intact in terms of its positivity,” said Andy Maynard, managing director at China Renaissance Securities. “Although we have a blip today . . . yesterday was kind of euphoric, last week was kind of euphoric.” But, he added, rising borrowing costs were unlikely to undermine positive momentum in China and other emerging markets. “Where else in the world do you go? Where do you put that money?” he said. “For the global asset allocators who stay in equity, I don’t think you necessarily rush back to the dollar and you definitely are not touching Europe”.

'Lawyer up, and get out': FBI first spurned Hunter Biden laptop, says Delaware tech repairman

John Paul Mac Isaac, the Delaware computer shop owner who unwittingly came into possession of Hunter Biden's laptop, says an FBI agent initially gave a stern warning to his family when first offered a copy of the explosive evidence about Joe Biden's son: "You better lawyer up and get out of my office."

In a wide-ranging interview Monday with Just the News, Isaac described what concerned him most about the contents on the laptop, his extensive efforts to get authorities in law enforcement and Congress to pay attention to it and his anger at the news media, Democrats and even security officials who initially accused him of carrying out a Russian disinformation campaign or trying to make money off the discovery.

U.S. intelligence has determined the laptop contents — now in the hands of the FBI and Congress and part of a criminal tax case — were not Russian disinformation. Isaac said he never took a dime for providing the materials to the FBI, Congress and Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani, not even when offered reimbursement for the hard drive equipment he used to make copies.

"Well, for somebody who's not very political, I assume what happened to me was the quintessential political hit job, to have that many people come out, without even talking to me, or having a conversation without doing a single background check," he told the John Solomon Reports podcast.

"I still feel a little bit upset about that," he added. "I have people that I've known for a long time, they're convinced that I'm a tool, or I've been a pawn or I got huge payout. And it's completely decimated my business. I had to leave town."

Isaac said the efforts "tagging me to Russia" were insulting, given that his father and grandfathers served in the military dating to World War II. He said he believed the attacks were just an outgrowth of the false Russia collusion story used to vilify President Trump at the start of his presidency.

"I get why they [critics] did it," he said. "It's topical. Everybody's scared of Russia, Russia, Russia. And why not, you know, if it worked four or six years ago, try it again."

Isaac said one of his biggest disappointments was the FBI's behavior when his family offered the contents of the hard drive to agents.

Isaac said a man identifying himself as Hunter Biden dropped off the laptop and other water-damaged computer equipment in early spring 2019 and failed to pick it up, even after signing a document declaring it would become his shop's property in 90 days.

UBS Profit Bonanza Eases Pressure over New Boss

UBS is in less need of strong management than most of its European peers—which is fortunate given the awkward position of its new boss.

On Tuesday, the Switzerland-based bank announced excellent full-year results, with profits up across the group. Chief executive Ralph Hamers, who took the reins in November, also gave hints of a new strategy he hopes to announce next quarter.

His plans were unfortunately overshadowed by December’s surprise decision by the Netherlands to open a new inquiry into Mr. Hamers’ role in a money-laundering scandal at his former employer, ING. The matter was previously thought to have been settled before his hiring. The investigations, which typically take about 18 months, are an unwelcome source of uncertainty for UBS’s investors.

The bank’s strategy involves integrating wealth management, investment banking and asset management to serve high-net-worth individuals globally, with a special focus on growth in Asia. Any leader is likely to build on that successful formula rather than reinvent it. Mr. Hamers highlighted three focus areas: improving technology investment, re-evaluating subscale markets and forging a more unified, agile corporate culture.

The technology focus isn’t a surprise. Mr. Hamers was hired for his expertise in digital transformation, and all banks are investing in technology to cut costs and improve products. He won’t spend more money, but rather shift to shorter-term projects and quarterly, instead of annual funding decisions.

Judge blasts FBI over misleading info for surveillance of Trump campaign adviser

The secretive federal court that approved the surveillance of former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page on Tuesday accused FBI agents of creating a misleading impression about their basis for requesting a warrant and ordered the bureau to overhaul its process.

In a blistering order, a judge on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) accused the bureau of providing false information and withholding materials that would have undercut its four surveillance applications.

"The FBI's handling of the Carter Page applications, as portrayed in the OIG report, was antithetical to the heightened duty of candor described above," Rosemary Collyer, presiding judge with the FISC, wrote in the order released by the court.

The judge gave the FBI until Jan. 10 to provide the court a sworn statement detailing how it plans to overhaul its approach to future surveillance applications.

The order comes after the Justice Department's Office of Inspector General (OIG) released a report earlier this month on its investigation into the Trump campaign and the 2016 election, with Inspector General Michael Horowitz detailing a series of missteps taken during the investigation.

The FBI said it would take more than 40 "corrective steps" in response to the watchdog report.

The surveillance court judge said Tuesday that the inspector general report documented “troubling instances in which FBI personnel provided information to NSD [the National Security Division of the Justice Department] which was unsupported or contradicted by information in their possession."

The judge also noted the report cited “several instances” in which the FBI sought to persuade the court that probable cause existed to believe Page was a Russian agent, but nonetheless withheld “information in their possession which was detrimental to their case."

"The frequency with which representations made by FBI personnel turned out to be unsupported or contradicted by information in their possession, and with which they withheld information detrimental to their case, calls into question whether information contained in other FBI applications is reliable," Collyer wrote. "The FISC expects the government to provide complete and accurate information in every filing with the Court. Without it, the FISC cannot properly ensure that the government conducts electronic surveillance for foreign intelligence purposes only when there is a sufficient factual basis."

Revelations in the Crossfire Hurricane case show that FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith didn't act alone.

When one looks at a situation like Monday's insanity-fueled, retail induced short squeeze across the board, one must ask: who are the government officials that have allowed this to happen and what have they been doing during the time they should be regulating such multiple-sigma market absurdities?

Allow us to offer a partial answer. If you were Nancy Pelosi and her husband, you were buying call options in names like Apple, Tesla and Disney. That's what a new disclosure, detailed in Barron's, revealed late last week.

Paul Pelosi purchased LEAPS in Tesla, Apple and Disney and shares in AllianceBernstein on December 22, the disclosure revealed. In other words, it's not just clueless retail Robinhood investors that are speculating; it's also clueless politicians. He purchased 100 $100 strike Apple calls that expire in January 2022 and paid between $250,000 and $500,000 for them. He also bought 25 in the money Tesla calls, selecting the $500 strike calls with a March 2022 expiration, according to the report. Those cost between $500,000 and $1 million. Finally, he bought between $500,000 and $1 million in Disney options, buying 100 calls at a $100 strike that expire in January 2022.

He also "paid $500,001 to $1 million for 20,000 shares of global investment firm AllianceBernstein," putting his average price around $33.37.

Obviously, the call option purchases are worth noting - not only because they are leveraged investments and are far more risky than buying outright stock - but because the Speaker now clearly has a vested interest in the success of names like Tesla, whose trajectories as public companies can be altered drastically by government decisions.

Paul Pelosi and Speaker Pelosi’s office didn’t respond to requests for comment, Barron's said. Can't say we're surprised.

Carlson retorted that no one at his network would employ similar tactics against Scarborough, who had questions raised by former President Donald Trump about the circumstances of one of his congressional interns’ death in 2001.

“[S]o how honest do you want to be here?” Carlson said. “The man you just saw has been accused by the president of the United States of murdering a young woman. Not many cable news hosts can say that. Now, we are not taking a position on Joe Scarborough’s guilt or innocence on that case. We are not a law enforcement agency. It is not our place to do that. Shortly after Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States, 17 freshmen Republicans in the US House acquiesced to the disingenuous call for “unity” emanating from the inauguration dais.

Among the signatories to the letter were two House Republicans who voted to impeach President Trump for a second time last week; Reps. Peter Meijer (R-MI), and David Valadao (R-CA).

An embarrassing total of 10 House Republicans – including the GOP’s number three, US Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), joined Democrats in voting for impeachment citing the false narrative that President Trump engaged in incitement to cause an insurrection on January 6th, 2021.

Also signing the concession letter were several House Republicans who voted for one or both challenges to the slates of electors at the Electoral College including: Reps. Stephanie Bice (R-OK), Madison Cawthorn (R-NC), Scott Franklin (R-FL), Carlos Gimenez (R-FL), Yvette Herrell (R-NM), Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY), Barry Moore (R-AL), Jay Obernolte (R-CA), Burgess Owens (R-UT), and Jerry Carl (R-AL).

The “Gang of 17” represents a but a small fraction of the 211 members in the House GOP conference.

Boeing And Lockheed Martin Reveal What Could Be The Army's UH-60 Black Hawk Replacement

Boeing and Lockheed Martin have unveiled their proposed helicopter, dubbed Defiant X, for the U.S. Army's Future Long Range Assault Aircraft, or FLRAA, program, which is part of the larger Future Vertical Lift effort. This particular project's primary goal is to acquire a replacement for the service's venerable UH-60 Black Hawks, including highly modified special operations variants, but could eventually replace other aircraft types across the U.S. military, as well.

The companies simultaneously revealed the Defiant X in press releases on Jan. 25, 2021. The design is an advanced compound helicopter derived from the SB>1 Defiant, which Sikorsky, now part of Lockheed Martin, and Boeing developed for the Army's Joint Multi-Role (JMR) technology demonstration program. Bell has also been a participant in the JMR effort with its V-280 Valor tilt-rotor. JMR has long been framed as a lead-in to FLRAA and, in December 2020, the Army released a draft request for proposals for the latter program, announcing in the process that it only planned to consider entries from the Boeing-Lockheed Martin team and Bell. Defiant X has the same general underlying configuration as the SB>1 Defiant compound helicopter, a design that first flew in 2019, with two rigid coaxial rotors and a pusher propeller in the tail. Compound helicopters typically offer higher top speeds and improved maneuverability over traditional helicopters. The SB>1 has so far demonstrated an ability to reach a top speed of 211 knots in level flight and hit 232 knots while in a shallow dive.

Flashback: Biden’s DHS Nominee Tied to China, Visas-for-Sale Swamp Scandal

President Joe Biden’s nominee to head the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) used his government job in 2011 to green-light a citizenship-for-sale swamp scheme that included top Democrats, Chinese investors, and $141 million.

The scandal looms large in the confirmation battle for Biden’s nominee, Alejandro Mayorkas, in part because it revives old questions about what role, if any, then-Vice President Biden’s staff may have played in that project to deliver green cards to Chinese investors.

Career officials under Mayorkas at the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) agency tried to stop the 2011 giveaway of EB-5 green cards. A U.S. startup, GreenTech Automotive, and a visas-for-money outfit called Gulf Coast Management pushed the deal.

The McAuliffe-Nelson meeting took place in Joe Biden’s office suite, a source told Breitbart News in 2013:

Breitbart News has learned from a source that the meeting at the White House was held in the offices of Vice President Joe Biden in the Old Executive Office Building. Breitbart News has requested a list of the members of the Vice President’s staff who participated in this October 13, 2010 meeting with Terry McAuliffe, but the Vice President’s office has not responded as of the time this story was published. The circumstances surrounding the October 2010 meeting with members of Vice President Biden’s staff emphasize the very high level of political connections that characterized McAuliffe’s tenure as chairman of GreenTech Automotive.

Breitbart News added that “Rick Wade, who was hired as Senior Vice President and Head of China Operations at GreenTech Automotive in 2011, was at the time of the October 2010 meeting a top aide to Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke. Locke was a member of Vice President Biden’s Task Force on the Middle Class in 2009 and 2010.”

Rick Wade is currently a Senior Vice President at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The chamber is cheerleading some of Biden’s immigration policies. Wade’s bio there makes no mention of his executive role at GreenTech Automotive, which ended in 2013.

The Washington Free Beacon reported, “The White House and [Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry] McAuliffe [D-VA] campaign are attempting to downplay a meeting between Terry McAuliffe and a White House official [Greg Nelson] in [October] 2010 about GreenTech.”

Greg Nelson, the White House official who hosted the meeting, sketched his job in a White House post:

Greg was Deputy Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement focused on public-private partnerships and setting up the White House’s private sector outreach, including as Deputy Director of the President’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. He focused the first two years of the Administration on energy, innovation, and technology policy.

In August 2010, USCIS rejected the deal. That rejection decision was reversed, in large part, due to Mayorkas.

USCIS eventually approved the deal in September 2011, clearing the way for more than 100 Chinese nationals to receive initial approval for green cards — the first step in a path to U.S. citizenship — in return for investments that ultimately totaled $141 million in the now-bankrupt GreenTech Automotive,

Chinese national Charles Wang founded the company. He made sure to include McAuliffe as company chairman from 2010 to the end of 2012. McAuliffe is no minor figure — he was the chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

A subsequent report by the DHS’s Inspector General released in 2015 concluded that Mayorkas acted inappropriately to secure that reversal by subordinate DHS officials in September 2011.
