Some guys in the US built a killbot and now they want to challenge the Kuratas to a duel.

Did any of you actually watched the video?

One YEAR to prepare

Having said that, should the Nipponese follow the demands of the Yankees and "upgrade" their art piece, here is how it'll go:

>TL;DR

1) The Yankee model has powerful weapons, wouldn't surprise me. In one year it could have the capability to dent (if not worse) the Kurata; HOWEVER, the decisive aspect of its weapon against the Kurata will be if it damages/breaks ONE (1) Kurata leg. In the case it should damage/break two legs, it will mean pretty much defeat for the Kurata.

2) I doubt the Nipponese will be able to upgrade armor (except cockpit) and weapons to the point where both models could just shoot each other a point blank range. The strength of the Kuratas is the maneuverability. To put this into detail, the mechanics of the Kuratas allows it to have greater choice for movement, both in area covered during movement and within it's own frame. With tuning, this possible movements can become faster, anyone who seen a Kurata video knows how painfully SLOW are its movements. I doubt overall the Kurata can become much faster, but it possesses greater relative speed.

3) Given these two points (I have many more to give), the breakdown of the fight will focus on the Kurata's higher maneuverability and speed as well as the Yankee-bot's power and defense. The weapons they use could determine the fight in ways to long to post, use your imagination… even non-lethal weapons can incapacitate a mecha, which will win the fight. I wouldn't be surprise if there is some "BIAS" in the judging of the fight… AND consequent BUTTHURT

4) FINALLY, I would expect the fight to be very SHORT if the Kurata is hit in its leg. It can take ONE to FOUR minutes if the Kurata keeps dodging or staying away from fire while attacking the joints, but most importantly the "tank" legs. The fight could take a LONG time if the Kurata stays away from danger (with higher mobility and speed) while carrying ineffective attacks (I doubt the pilots will have MILITARY experience or MECHANICAL experience, to know WHERE to shoot).

>inb4 who i am? I'm writing a scifi book (for chan NEETs, for free). I like realism which lead me to work in a new area of physics: I have equations and 2 papers to prove it, which will come WITH the release of my work.

This SOUNDS like the beginnings of a future sport. In the future they'll probably look back on how early mech battles, and other stuff like battle bots, began with really simple machines that were often media showpieces or gimmick boxes, but with popularity and more competitors along with better tech, better mechs are a possibility.

A "battle mech" in this context isn't a gundam and probably won't be for a long time, but some wheeled tanks with arms are a good place to start. We don't need all the equations solved at once, we just need enough done to move forward, and that's what we have.

So in a little less than a year, two companies from either sides of the pacific have to turn their technological test beds into full blown war horses. While the Megabot Team has clearly outlined what sort of upgrades they plan on making, my big question is what the Kuratas team plans to do to take their art piece and make it combat-ready. You /m/en have already pointed out potential weaknesses. What do you think the other side is going to do to update the Kuratas?

Well, the maker of the Kuratas already said he wants melee combat, so I'd imagine he'd add something to do with that. I also think he'll try to make it more versatile, how well the robots can move will probably be a big factor in who wins this fight.

So I guess I'll followup with some questions to sorta probe for answers in how you guys think the Kuratas itself will change in upcoming months. As it stands, the legs and wheels are somewhat exposed. Do you think that the Kuratas team could uparmor the legs without potentially having to sacrifice mobility? And on the topic of the legs, the Kuratas itself is somewhat topheavy. Does the leg design lend itself to aid or hinder any autobalancing systems that might get installed?

There's also the issue of the Kuratas being a single-piloted robot. Would a single pilot be able to manage all operations of the Kuratas in a live combat situation? Moving and attacking at the same time sounds easy, but is probably very difficult in a machine that you have to manipulate with control sticks and system toggle switches.

And finally weapons. There were a bunch of mock-weapons created for the Kuratas, but now that it's combat time, what sort of weapons do you think will be on the final model? The Kuratas team seems to favor going hand-to-hand, but now that the US team has said "we're doing this with both guns and melee weapons" what options do the Kuratas team have?

No, but they could either:

1. Setup another Kickerstarter.

or

2. Setup a PayPal account you can donate to.

I'm not sure they'll do either of those, though. They'll probably just cut their "losses" and go with what they have.

They just released a new update.

Fight is delayed till next year due to some logistical issues (not sure exactly what). but they will be doing an unveiling in November.

I don't know about you guys, but I think I can hold out for it.

My expectations are set pretty low for the fight.

I expect it to not be nearly as fast or intense as others are expecting.

I just hope this opens up a gateway for other enthusiasts to try their hand at this kind of stuff.

I remember back in the mid 2000's I used to go to this mech board that was basically a huge catalog of every mech picture there was from movies/anime/cartoons/books/games.

And the people running it were working on a project to make working mech legs.

They apparently sunk a lot of money into it, but at some point I lost track of the website and forgot what it was even ever called.

I think it might of just been deleted off the net not sure.

Either way the point is that I hope this at least happens.

Even if it sucks it will be a game changer.

I know, it sucks.

Here is the public update they just posted today.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/megabots/support-team-usa-in-the-giant-robot-duel/posts/1634073

It's been awhile since we updated, and for that we sincerely apologize. We've been focusing all of our energy on the robot and our negotiations, and less on outreach. Work on the robot has continued at top speed, and work setting up the duel has continued at best possible speed, but we haven't posted about it for a few reasons. These reasons include but are not limited to:

We're under a mutual NDA with Suidobashi regarding planning for the duel. We cannot legally disclose details about the duel until both parties are ready to release such details.

We're planning an event in which people are piloting multi-ton combat robots that are trying to destroy each other, without harming the pilots, and that takes a lot of careful consideration.

We're in active negotiations with the venue of the duel. Any disclosures regarding the nature of or location of the duel would endanger those negotiations, and could prevent it from happening.

We're documenting the design and fabrication process but don't want to tease much of it until it's finalized and ready to reveal, which won't be for a little while yet.

We don't want to accidentally give Suidobashi an edge on our design by posting too much about it publicly.

We can say that the duel is still on, though delayed, and we're working as hard as we can to sign all of the contracts and lock it down. To give you guys an example of why this is so difficult to work out, transporting one team's robot by air to the venue looks like it will cost around $200,000 to $300,000 round trip - half the cost of what this Kickstarter raised. Transporting the robots by sea is a more cost effective option, but we would risk having the robots arrive rusted, damaged and non-functional - a month or two after we ship them. In addition, getting a completely custom, 6-ton robot specifically designed for combat through another country's customs office is presenting a… whole new level of logistical challenges. Rest assured that our work continues unabated, but progress is slow.

Put your face in one end of the tube whilst your friend puts his or her face in the other end. Answer (not out loud) the following questions:

On present evidence, how many faces do you see in the tube, two or one?

You can see your friend’s face at the far end – do you see your face at the near end?

Isn’t your end wide-open? Doesn’t the tube vanish into nothingness at your end – into clear, boundless consciousness?

How many clear, boundless consciousnesses do you see in the tube, two or one?

Is this single, undivided consciousness at the near end separate from the face at the far end? Is there a dividing line between this space and that face?

As this space, aren’t you built open for your friend, face there to no face here?

Having no face of your own, couldn’t you say that your friend’s face is yours?

Haven’t you always been face to no-face with others?

Come out of the tube.

Take a few moments to share your reactions with your friend.

They have fucking corporate sponsors and rich backers funding them

If the MECH FIGHT 2016 2017 is popular enough, we're going to have big boy battlebots

That's been the end game since the beginning.

Before they ever challenged Japan they were trying to gain funding for a robot fighting league.

But the biggest problem with that is you need robots to make a robot fighting league.

There are colleges now working on mechs as projects for the students.

It's no coincidence that its popping up more and more.

Even if the fight sucks, interest in it is growing, and now that MB is posting on facebook frequently their posts are getting more and more shares and likes.

2016 is the year of the mech my friends.

And 2017 could very well be the year of the mech fight.

Sheeeeeeeeeeiiiit.

If more of them actually were caught up in that stuff we would have at least one ship by now that can enter and exit the atmosphere on it's own propulsion.

Mechs take a lot less R&D because all of the technology to build a mech already exists.

The biggest problem with mechs is the legs, and that problem of balance has already been solved by robot enthusiasts.

Just no one has put the time and money into pumping the size up to mech proportions.

No, balance was solved by a dedicated professional team propped up by lots of military dollars (Boston Dynamics). Even then, it will be a while before we see it implemented. Do not underestimate how complicated walking on an uneven surface is.

I might have misused the word enthusiast there, but basically yes I meant people have been working on it and have for the most part gotten the issue of bipedal robots down.

Boston Dynamics is not the only team working on these issues either.

There are many other research groups and colleges as well, one of which megabots is working with.

http://robots.ihmc.us/

>Do not underestimate how complicated walking on an uneven surface is.

I've been reading about mechs and robots since I was 6 years old.

I've followed this stuff pretty closely.

The biggest issues usually come from robots needing to be programmed for balancing and reacting to changing environments.

The calculations it takes to get through a moving crowd of people are staggering.

There is also the issue of power as well.

Which is also one of the major problems with things like exo suits.

The fact that this is a mech however takes away a lot of the calculations a robot would need to do on it's own, and puts it in the pilots hands instead.

The thing just needs to be able to balance and be able to walk.

Which still takes a good deal of calculations and balance work, but reacting to obstacles and things like that will be in their hands.

I'm going to assume this fight will be on flat ground however, in a stadium.

I don't think a power source will be too huge an issue either.

I'm doubtful they plan on fighting for too long in these things.

Boston dynamics gets a shitload of funding.

But I'm willing to bet if interest were higher, and from a civilian source (random billionaires as that one guy said), then we would have at least one giant robot in the world walking on two legs at this point.

Boston dynamics is working for military use however.

Which is why most of their focus is not on bipedal robots, which are far less efficient than 4 legged robots.

Heh, funny you should mention that…

In my own concept for a Gundam setting, the Federation equivalent's first real victory again the Zeon equivalents' Zaku expy was when a Space Mechanic had tackled it with his custom Worker Pod (AKA, a Ball).

His original plans for the vehicle were to start up an underground Ball fighting league of questionable legality (Since the setting has a standing ban on the use of projectile weaponry within or pointed at a Space Colony to prevent catastrophic hull ruptures, which is why giant robots are a THING now, and a Ball going full tilt is practically a bullet).

He then basically becomes their lead Mobile Suit designer, and his biggest innovation is sorta like the core fighter concept, except pic related.

Eh, as much as I love the Loto and the Origins' Early Type Guntank, it really depends on the Theater of Battle when it comes to Spider Legs or Treads for me…

Spider Tanks a great as close infantry fire support platforms in urban or rough terrain, while Tread Mechs would be better for long range bombardment during a high risk of close ranged combat.

I suppose it depends on the style chosen by a given IP. Mecha itself is often absurd, but realistic touches such as tank treads (and many other things) can make a mech look more gritty and "real."

Same for myself, except "Guntank" style mecha can go UP from Heavy Tanks and Self-propelled Artillery.

In my own idea for a Gundam setting, for example, has the Guntank analog be less a "mecha" and more "semi-humanoid mobile ANTI-ORBITAL RAILGUN PLATFORM."

I wouldn't be surprised on D-day Kuratas can:

- Fly (or just hover for short periods)

- equipped with missile racks so he can go Itano Circus right off the bat

- melee weapon is a electrified sword that can shoot electromagnetic bolts or whatever

According to the guys they are actually working really closely with Wataru in regards to safety and the actual rules of the bout, so I highly doubt any of the information they have been releasing will be dangerous to get out, and I doubt any of them will be in real danger in the fight.

They also are working with some guy from NASA who is developing the inner protection to the cockpit, so I think it's safe to assume that any weapons they may be using will be least effective against the cockpit.

My best guess is that both bots will probably line up some where around the same height, and the arms and legs will be at a similar areas.

So it will basically be weapon VS weapon at that point.

They keep talking about how the weapons will all be modular.

So I think what they will do is make destroying the weapons the actual goal.

Like each team comes in with 4 or so weapons, and whoever runs out first loses.

This could end up being a point based sport battle.

Their initial kickstarter was for exactly that.

They wanted it to be a giant mech/paintball fight with hit markers and score counters, and the pilots to be behind grates so the paintballs would explode all over them for entertainment value as well.

This whole melee fight is sort of a way to promote it more since their original kickstarter failed.

Which are you talking about here?

By it's very design the Kuratas won't be able to mount a power-plant worth a damn.

If this video features the Kuratas 2, then it isn't much sturdier either despite being a far smaller machine.

The reason I worry about the cooling fans is that it suggest a heat issue, which isn't surprising considering the people who built the tread base seem to rely on air cooling instead of a proper radiator.

Kuratas 2 hasn't been unveiled. Also you could hitch a bigger engine on the backside. What I meant by sturdier is that it doesn't really on high placed legs. If the MK IIs hydraulics are damaged its legs might loose tension and cause the torso to fall. Kuratas does have joints on it's legs but they're placed low and probably out of reach of the MK IIs attacks , whereas the MK IIs legs are in easy reach for Kuratas

I know /m/ and mech fans in general have been hyped for this fight to take place, which is why it'll be so disappointing when it's cut and edited and shown in a carefully designed after-the-fact production.

But you have to think of the normies. They won't tolerate something that isn't high-octane and flashy or "impressive". Megabots showed off the Mk.III ripping the cockpit hatch off of the Mk.II recently. I thought it was awesome, Youtube commenters complained about "muh slow" and "muh boring". In order for mechfighting to ever be feasible, you need good designs that are fast and capable of putting up an interesting fight. In order to make those designs, you need a lot of different teams working on their own ideas, trying to perfect the technology.

And for that to happen, you need more than just three teams (one of which is literally a sculpture artist who can't into robotics) competing. You need more than just a few old twitter fans. You need major support, you need to go big.

So that's why it's critical that this fight look GOOD. It will without doubt be cut, edited, and produced like a movie. But like a Kung Fu movie, not a soap opera, it will still have clips, though cherry-picked, that flaunt the absolute best abilities of both robots. The fight will be fake, but also real at the same time.

Only once this catches on will we be able to do stuff like watch it payperview, livestreamed, or live in arenas. And so I'm willing to accept that this first fight will be engineered for enjoyment. It's a necessary evil.

When this technology is developed further it's going to rip the shit out of MK III

Megabots are just weird looking construction machines made for TV edits

The (((megabots))) team (just look at their names and faces) are dishonest television producers who built a low tech excavator that's shaped like a robot so they can wreck things slowly and edit it to look like a battle

Like >>17914 said, current mechs are slow and primitive, and many of the designers specialize in kinetic art and construction machines, not in actual robotics.

Actually, it was meant to happen two years ago. It was postponed to last August, however it was only until September that both mechs shipped to the agreed location. As far as we know from social media, the actual battle has finished and is presumably being editing, trimmed, and tucked into consumable form for when they release the Youtube video. (It was never streamed).

Honestly, I'm almost more interested in seeing how Kuratas was upgraded than actually watching the fight. The fact that it's taking them so much time to release the video turns my stomach.

Not much, but Megabots put out a teaser for the match. There are some scant looks at the upgraded Kuratas (its new tracks are conspicuously out of view, but that paint job says it's at least thrice as fast as it used to be)

The address to the twitch stream is in the video. As stated in previous promotional material, the stream of the match goes live on Tuesday, October 17th and 7pm PDT.

I see your point, but you have to consider reality. The shit that goes down in anime where 20m tall robots are punched across a city street and WWE suplexed into the ground is just not possible. Even on the small scale they're doing, you're not going to see big metal crushing punches because no one has the power to do it. Megabots MIGHT have been able to do it to the old Kuratas at absolute max power, but even then you don't know what would happen. If it looks like a sissy punch, remember that these things are freaking heavy and it's probably more of a jolt to the pilots than you'd expect. You wouldn't think that it would be a huge deal, but the old MKII Mech could literally kill the pilot if it fell over, and that was only 5 tons.

It was the only round that actually fell within the stipulations that both sides agreed upon when this whole thing began. USA had to build a second bot and ignore the no melee weapon rule to do the damage that "won" them the second round and, apparently, the entire duel as well.

The fact that the USA team was allowed to bring two bots, use weapons that were supposed to be off-limits and had their attempt to force open the Kuratas' cockpit with the fucking cannon arm completely ignored means there was a blatant bias towards making the USA team look good, rules be damned.

Yeah, the whole thing was rather pooly executed. I have to wonder why all of this went down the way it did. That's really underhanded. Why also keep ranged weapons when it's meant to be a melee fight? Lots of things aren't really adding up.

>why did they pick a fight with an art piece

Because Mk2 was also an art piece at the time. It got much more attention than they expected, they were originally just going to slap some safety gear and a melee weapon onto mk2, then it was more extensive upgrades for mk2, then it was an entire new bot.

>why also keep ranged weapons

Because melee only would be boring, at least there was an excuse for them to move around in directions that weren't straight towards each other.

>>18457

>how a self-taught blacksmith that makes wrought iron fences for a living has the money and knowledge necessary to make a large robot vehicle

He was probably already rich, and blacksmithing large stuff (like fences and doors) makes you a shitload of dosh.

>how a couple of no-name engineers managed to afford big defense contractors, software companies and fucking NASA to build them a robot

Ez. Look at Linkedin. Gui worked at fucking Boston Dynamics for 4 years, founded a makerspace, led a project to make a spiderbot at said makerspace, got a job at a company that does robot fabrication and consultation, THEN founded megabots. Matt has a similar background. They were already doing robots, then met the CEO of Autodesk at some event, told him about their projects, hit it off, and got a sponsorship. That drove production of the Mk1 and Mk2, then the duel and kickstarter got them a shitload of investors. They turned over even more money by shipping Mk2 around the world for paid events, while at the same time using that same money and their investment money to kick in full-fledged production of Eagle Prime, steal the film crew from Mythbusters, buy literal state-of-the art hydraulics equipment, etc.

Their endgame isn't to make a bunch of robots, though. It's to make a sports league. They've said it outright many times. They're using their robot to start this process, but they'll end up doing logistics, organization, rules, etc. for giant robot fighting as a sport. Nobody else in the world has experience in shipping massive battle robots across the ocean, and they can lend that expertise to other teams who want to show off their own engineering. On top of that, they'll make bank from advertising and merch sales. Companies like Autodesk get to advertise by slapping on branding the same way that racecars do. Any and all advertisers will reach an audience normally averse to sports and sport styles of marketing. And money from advertisers and sponsors can flow right back into making even more robots (you have to keep in mind here, these things still cost far less than an F1 car).

Here's a good video of Gui pitching the entire thing to a bunch of west coast investors at some startup event: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-g85lOSA8Y

Let's face it, as staged as it was, you'd probably watch the next one. And the one after that. I will. I'll turn off my adblocker for it. I might even buy a patch or a sticker, and fantasize about building and piloting robots with my friends (I'm wondering where the old props from Gunhed ended up). >Let's face it, as staged as it was, you'd probably watch the next one.

No doubt about that. But what made the staging really terrible is the fact that the robots clearly fought, and I'm sure the end result actually happened, but the stage play narrative of it ruined the whole experience. I expected the fights to be visually boring, because the machines are slow as ass, and I wasn't expecting sparks and explosions, but the first fight was clearly not scripted, and that was actually the most exciting part of it. Once you had the announcers "run" however, if makes you question if any of it actually happened at all. I'm sure some of it was real, but now you have to trash the whole memory of it because they've now made it worthless.

>>18467

Yeah. As far as I'm concerned, the wrestling-style commentary doesn't work.

If we're going to have post-fight films, I want not-Duncan-Fisher narrating it and CGI cutaways showing the system damage dealt by major blows. I want pilot cams showing their faces in the corner of the screen. I want sparks and flying pieces of metal captured in flawless slowmo. I want shots of spilled hydraulic fluid looking like blood on the floor after the battle, and shaky zoomed-in footage of the pilots talking to their teams.

The scripting that I'm ok with is stuff like when they grabbed the light rig and spun it. It was as funny as it was fun to watch - solidly tongue-in-cheek while still showing the bot's capabilities, although I wish they had clobbered Kuratas with it.

For live combat, I'd be fine with a standard announcer as long as they don't play it up too much.

Still, despite it all, my imagination is running wild. I keep thinking about the possibility of getting friends together, hitting up some junkyards, and throwing together my own crude mech. The one thing I want to do most before I die is fight as a mecha pilot.

This could be good, but it really needs standardization. The armor material needs to be the same for both bots, and the weapons need to be set at a certain "power level" to avoid pilot deaths. If both teams are using similar thick ABS armor and some type of kinetic weapons that could blow chunks off of each other without risking gibbing the pilot, then this could really be feasible.

To be fair, Megabots was quick to point out that weight classes are needed to make this thing legit, and they are definitely right. I am more talking about how we can actually achieve a good amount of visible damage on these robots without putting the pilots at an unrealistic amount of risk. I think that armor panels made out of a breakable material like ABS plastic would be a good way to go, as the force required to shatter them could be safely achieved.

>I'm not sure if it was entirely fake or anything, but the announcer pretending to panic really made it so I have to assume it was. When they grabbed the lighting truss I assumed the guys were saying, "You know what would be cool?"

I kinda assume it was a bit of both; The Light truss stunt looked a little staged (Why have an easily destroyed set of lights on the floor where the robots could break them?), but actually trying to deflect paintballs by spinning the truss and the pointless drone were so lame they had to have been ad-havok.

I'd guess of the six minutes of ACTUAL ROBOT FIGHTING footage we got was paired down from about an hours worth of fucking around with the bots, allowing them to get a rough choreography of a fight down.

>>18368

>Square-cube law. Bipedal legs don't work very well on a scale that large.

Actually it's not the Square-Cube law that fucks bipeds up at Megabots/VOTOMs scale, it's the active balance control.

Just standing on two points of contact is actually a pretty complex task, while moving is basically a controlled topple in one direction that can easily land you flat on your back, face, or side with a single misstep.

This is actually why most bipeds robots right now do this:

>>18367

>shuffle around a little like retarded toddlers

Because they simply aren't capable of staying in that tiny sweet spot between NEARLY falling and actually falling over.

>>18382

>so much as a bunch of guys trying out their big expensive toys against each other after making an agreement not to break them too much.

Well yeah, they're expensive toys that are custom machined/a modified special production run, if shit breaks there's no corner giant robot store to run over to pick up a replacement part from.

At best they'll get to the point of Monster Trucks; Having a small Micro-industry built off

an existing commercial manufacturing one that caters to those who want to own one of these expensive toys.

>>18388

> it's still a nice thing to get people interested and possibly have this as a real annual competition with multiple countries eventually. I could see these robots getting better and more innovative/functional.

Exactly, I personally want to get the local heavy machine manufacturers in on this, because nothing fuels a machine-sport industry more that using it as a brand dick-waving contest.

Ford, GM, International, Deere… These are all companies big enough to have the resources to throw at this sort of shit, and if NASCAR is any indication, they can innovate it enough to make the spectacle half way safe to actually participate in.

>>18464

True, and I don't fault them for wanting to create Robot Fighting NASCAR, but they really need to start reaching out to industrial machine manufacturers so a proper brand dick-waving contest can help fuel that, otherwise you're just going to have a bunch of one-time art-student start-ups trying and failing to scratch build Fighting Robots without any supporting infrastructure.

Well yes and no…

One of the reason I feel they need the support of the Industrial Machine manufacturing industry is they would both standardize common components (REALLY fucking important to have readily available replacement parts for shit you can't jerry-rig on the spot) and tap into their valuable pool of knowledge on Operator Safety (Robot slug-fest would be a lot more do-able with NASCAR level driver safety set-ups preventing the pilots from scrambling each others brains and spines).

I think a slugfest aspect would be really neat, but there needs to be more impact to punches. Actuators alone don't seem to be very capable of delivering a knockout blow right now. A Big O or Scopedog piston punch would be fantastic. Some sort of piston in the wrist or arm that expands with a pneumatic or explosive charge would really help deliver some force. As far as ranged weapons go, it's really hard to establish something that would be capable of damaging a robot on direct hits, but not turning the pilot into salsa on a cockpit hit.

>I think a slugfest aspect would be really neat, but there needs to be more impact to punches.

Actually they're plenty of impact force.

It's what makes a slug-fest so dangerous in the first place; Eagle Prime couldn't actually "Punch" Kuratas because that would concuss the pilot too hard, turning Kogoro brain to jelly with just the INSIDE of his own scull.

>As far as ranged weapons go, it's really hard to establish something that would be capable of damaging a robot on direct hits, but not turning the pilot into salsa on a cockpit hit.

I think the Kuratas team had the better ideas here with their Drone and Paintball gun; You have to be more esoteric with your Range Weapons, using them to blind, entangle, or otherwise inconvenience your opponent before closing into Melee.

Anything powerful enough to do damage from impact alone is going to be super dangerous for the pilots to begin with, and WAY too dangerous for any spectators to safely watch a match in person.

And if you can't use anything that makes the match too dangerous to watch from a grandstand, you run into the same problem Battlebots did where only the boring and practical safe stuff wins.

They used the cannons on their original mech concept, and it literally would have instantly killed whoever was in the cockpit, and even tore up some of the metal. Yeah, it's clearly a vestige of when Mega Bots was going to be a soft-contact paintball sport; A big air cannon that looks impressive but doesn't really do shit.

Kuratas instead used it's Air Submachine gun like the head vulcans on a mobile suit; A small caliber, rapid-fire weapon for either taking advantage of openings or trying to create them.

Because Kurata wanted it that way. He said he wanted "survival games" and "hand-to-hand combat" for his robot long before the gauntlets were tossed. Face it, he's a mech nerd who made it real. He saw the cartoon, then he wondered how it would look, so he built a VOTOMS statue. Then he wondered how it would be to ride it, so he made Kuratas. Then with the megabots he got the chance to feel what it would be like to battle with it, staged or not. It may seem lame as fuck from the outside but can you imagine the adrenaline rush and feeling of absolute ecstasy he would have had in that first round, steaming ahead at 18 mph to slam into a 5-ton robot and punch it over? I was thinking it would be better to build down from a helicopter than build up from a tank. Something like a V-22 Osprey with it's VTOL, but more humanoid. You could probably build something fast, bipedal, and 30 feet tall as long as it's weight is largely carried by rotors and the body is made of aircraft grade material. And it could have fairly heavy armor and armaments, comparable to an A-10.

Alternatively, battery tech in the future could make something ground based, like Labors. The science doesn't matter at the end of the day. If we can meme it, we can make it

Unfortunately, it did.

The kickstarter just got cancelled. They know that kickstarters get their biggest spikes at the beginning and end of the campaign, and they only pulled $54k. They're going to look for alternative sources of funding - god only knows what that means, I'm willing to bet that they've exhausted the Palo Alto VC scene, and they've already got a bunch of corporate sponsorships.

I was going to toss them $20, but couldn't this week because Paladin Press announced that they're closing so I snagged a good $100 worth of books that have probably landed me on a couple watchlists.

It sucks, because I was really hoping they'd pull together the funds to R&D something much faster, even if it ends up smaller. This entire time, I've still fantasized getting a few of my more mechanically minded friends together and building some scrapheap shitbot from junkyard pieces and old hydraulics. If Kuratas can commercially sell parts kits for about $1m USD, a couple of autists and engineers should be able to throw something together from a junkyard on a shoestring budget.
