Oh Muv-Luvn will never become popular or mainsteam in the West. It's strictly a Japanese franchise for Japanese people. It was odd to see TE localised, but then again, the license must've been cheap as hell.
Still, franchise becoming mainstream is far from what could be the worst thing. Look at franchises that were mainstream and enjoyed high regard to years end, only to be brought down by mad management. That happens to franchises anyway, mainstream or not.
It would be incorrect to say that becoming mainstream will destroy the franchise or make it better. You have examples both ways, it's all about how it's handled. Call me reverse hipster or someshit, but I really want my favourite things to be successful and make money by the boatloads to ensure that the franchise will be long living and would produce boatloads of products, materials and anything between the earth and sky.
Sadly, Muv-Luv by nature is doomed to stay as a entertainment for the smaller audiences, unless they actually manage to make something that would strike the current general culture and become part of it.

Well, they certainly are trying. As far as I know âge sold off the rights to 5pb so you can expect them to try and milk the franchise dry as console only VN's. I've seen way too many franchises go down the drain lately due to the creators trying to pander to the mainstream so excuse me for being so pessimistic.

Is it really though? Wasn't it rather huge back in the day? Weren't âge super successful with KimiNozo only to blow away all the money while MLA was in development hell? Cookie was a perfectionist who poured literally all he had into those games, I just can't see 5bp doing the same.

If they'll be consoles only VNs, I'll be fine with it. None of the ML stories outsides the original ones need the erotica content to them necessarily, and many will argue that whatever erotica was in Muv-Luv and Alternative could've been removed. I disagree, but that's another topic.
KimiNozo was huge mostly because of the animation. The VN itself, like any other VN, was a niche product.
Calling it super successful would be a misnomer, and should be reserved for something like Fate series. KimiNozo wasn't really big, as it left little to no impact on the popular culture outside coining the term tsundere. And yes, the money was spent on Alternative, which should tell you how bad Cookie is with management and planning. You don't need to pour everything you have into something to make it shine and be the best it can. Sure, it helps but it's what you do with it matters more. âge has a long history with bad decisions and product pushbacks that haven't helped their case. We still haven't seen KimiNozo Mabu-Love, even thou it has been (supposedly) in the works for years now. While one could say that they are playing the long game, I'm far more inclined to say they just have awful as hell project management.
I see 5pb putting the same effort they've been putting in their other products. Seeing how much people have criticised Muv-Luv spinoff's quality overall, 5pb can't really do any worse. âge is still working with them, so putting the blame on 5pb is more or less uncalled for. Removal if nipples makes more sense in-universe than leaving them be as well. It's a minor detail, and anyone who gets caught on that should be dragged behind the sauna and shot in the head. If those are in way of getting more exposure to the series, then by all means go for the logical route.
And let's be honest, Muv-Luv was never mainstream. The first VN has that genre shift with Unlimited, while Extra is apparently very annoying to people who come for the mecha and bugwar. Alternative is very political with views that wouldn't hit with the general audience and has long speeches of nothing but exposition. Half of fans hate half of the characters, and the other half the other half.
I may be taking all this from business standpoint a bit too much, but in the end I just want the series to be as successful as possible, so there could be some small chance of seeing the the original two VNs adapted either as direct to home media format, or as a full blown TV-series.
