How would you fix Space Runaway Ideon?
How badly could a remake fuck things up?

Really, I would only shorten it. It is one of my top 5 anime (and I have been watching for a little more than a decade) for how well it crafts the atmosphere of hopelessness and develops the bonds between the characters without focusing too much on the melodrama of their individual lives. The slow pace makes me feel their fatigue with the endless battles. The seemingly unreliable power of the Ideon bringing them close to death so often. It really is a gem brought down by its excessive length.

Remove the canon from Ideon's crotch(unless it's part of some kind of symbolism that I just didn't catch onto) and maybe trim down a bit on the the battles, and you're good, provided you stop watching the show after episode 38 and go straight to Be Invoked.

I just finished the entire show and movie last week and I definitely think that the show takes too long to get to themes of hopelessness and such. I do think that show fails more in writing and gets by with its amazing cinematography. Ajian Burning is a good example of this, i.e when Cosmo becomes traumatized from a Buff Clan attack and he meets that military woman that reminds him of his mother. The way Cosmo's trauma is dealt with is poor but the scenes that impact him are amazingly done. So even though the show is too long, some parts aren't given enough time to be brilliant. There are more examples of this but that is the most obvious one to me.
Overall I enjoyed the show but it does have some problems that are going to take some thought to fix.
