Gunpla/Plamo General #5: Happy New Year! did anyone actually participate in the group build edition
What're you guys working on currently? I'm using my Dendrobium as a table, and working on SDs.
What kits are you guys looking forward to? Gonna grab a 1/100 Graze tomorrow.

For those of you just joining us, please read this guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

Also did anyone besides Orange Knight take place in the group build? Cockmail was taken down by German cops, so I can't see any entries; although the days leading up to the deadline didn't get anything. I gotta start working on my organization skills.
also what you faggot GMs think of the new general pic? Should I start making them gifs?

So I want to get started with gunpla and I found on my local hobby store the following models I am interested in:
Zeta Gundam (MSZ-006) RG
Zaku Ground Set HG
RX-78-2 MG( I picked the Origin version because I think it looks the best)
Are there any problems in quality with these?
Also I would really like to know if a gray and/or brown marker would be fine for panel lining since the store doesn't have any others and I would have to wait for 3 weeks for them to arrive from amazon.

The RG Zeta is a bit fiddly because of the transformation, so it might not be the best choice for your first Real Grade. It's still a good kit though.

I took some decals from an old F-16 fighter kit and used them to give more character to a GM ground type MG I weathered. I also painted the rifle Nato green because I figured it would look better than the off white it is supposed to be.
Also weathered an old HG GM Cold District type and gave him a grizzly decal from the same F-16 kit.
My next project is hitting my Kampfer mg with some micah blue.

I have a general question with real grades. Do you guys have a problem with the stand adapters? They hold VERY tight the first time you place your RG on them, and them seem to get weaker every time you take the RG off the stand. They appear to just clip on to the bottom of the frame, which seems to lead to problems with the nubs getting worn down and being unable to hold their bulk. My Z'Gok RG can't stay on the stand, and my Destiny has problems staying on the stand. Is this because of how heavy they are? Am I just doing the attachment wrong?

Thanks friend, I don't know how hard it is to get gunpla in Brazil. Can you guys order via hobbylink japan or amazon? I've built a ton of kits, and most look pretty decent with just a little sanding and a top coat of flat matte. Hell most of my kits just have panel lining and some light painting to make thing anime accurate. I'm sure you could order a couple of cheap High Grades and put them together.
I chose the GM Ground Type's dragon decal because the Kojima Battalion was deployed in Southeast Asia. I also chose the 04th Team because Monsha and Burning were two of my favorites from 0083.(Though they never say if they used Ground Gundams or GMs to my knowledge.)
The GM Cold District Type I plan on using as a diorama with some Hygoggs later, but I'm declaring him a member of Grizzly Squadron, a Federation unit fighting for oil reserves in Alaska.

i finished building my X2 and model itself is ok, but the gun and the sword come molded in blue, without all the yellow like on my third picture. Also, the X2 can't really hold its shotlance, so i'm thinking of gluing it in its hand.
also it says in the manual to get that tattered look on the cloak to just cut it up like that but i want it to look really fucked up; tears and burn holes and shit.
anyway, do you guys have some recommended yellow paint to make my X2 pretty and do you have any ideas for the shotlance and the cloak?

Tamiya's yellow is a perfect match for that. You'll want to prime in light grey and do 2-3 coats of yellow over that since it's a dark part.

Sorry in advance for all the links
I am just starting out and I want to know if the following things will suffice.
I have ordered a black, gray and brown fine tip pen. I already have a bunch of tools so I won't be needing any more for the models. I was also thinking of buying modeling glue( pic related) in order to use it like the guy in this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ikk7ybBiP1I
Would that work? I also really liked how his zaku turned out so I am also interested in weathering it like the guy did. Are these markers any good for that?
Gundam Marker Real Touch Set 2
Finally are these matt sprays any good for gundam models?

That's what you say now.
He's just using Tamiya Mr. Cement. It's this http://www.amazon.com/Tamiya-87012-Plastic-Cement-20/dp/B002CDPZDK/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1454047820&sr=8-4&keywords=mr+cement
$6 no Amazon, but most hobby shops that carry Asian shit will usually sell it for $3-4. Get the green thin version too, since thin seeps into cracks allowing you to seal some hard to get spots.
iirc, Gundam real touch markers are made for beginners to try weathering. They're pretty shit once you branch out, but they're a great place to try starting out. I use the grey one for panel lining because of the fat brush and how watery it is.
>weathering have a similar effect with dry brushing
Dry brushing is a type of weathering. Weathering is a general term to represent various techniques from bullet holes, to rust.
The paint you use for dry brushing doesn't matter, it's just the technique. You get some paint on a brush, dry it off, and brush edges of a model.
>Finally are these matt sprays any good for gundam models?
I've never used those brands before. I think they're going to be very thick though, since they're not made for model kits/hobby.

Thank you very much for all the info.
I found a bunch of old oil paints( and when I say a bunch I mean a lot) in one of my drawers so I decided to use these by dry brushing instead of the markers for the weathering.
I will probably not get any matt sprays since I am not that keen of their effect and from what I have seen I actually prefer the models that the spray is not used on.

Oh fuck, oil paints? Like pastels and shit? I don't think that works with gunpla. Ive tried mixing some modeling cement with pastels to make a weird melting paste.
Enamel, acrylic, are for hand painting, with acrylic being the most beginner friendly.
Since I think you're going to work on bare plastic, at leat try sanding the kit. It makes the plastic look better without swirls and inconsistencies, and helps paint hold on better.

It's the MG but it doesn't have any markings or the bells and whistles on yet and I still haven't had a chance to build the wings.
He's a little small for a MG without his wings and effect parts on but he's got good clean lines and sticks out quite well. I'll upload more once I get a chance to get back to work. The "Beam Cloaks" on this kit are huge and eye catching and I don't even have those off the runners yet.
One shitty thing though, it has very HG style hands. Just some gripping fists, shooting hands and these Jojo's Pose-esque ones.
Also seconded you, I've been looking at the AGE2 for awhile and considering pulling the trigger but I just ordered two of those Gusion/Gusion Rebake combo kits so I can build Mecha Fucking Shiva and that ate up my Gunpla budget for the month.

Panel lining needs work, also that pose is rigid
the shoulder mounted shield on a zaku is meant to rotate, it shouldn't be sticking up like that
also it looks like you're trying for a stabilizing pose, try bending the zaku's right leg and leave the other leg extended
a good way to practice posing gunpla in my own opinion is practicing the pose yourself

it takes about a billion water transfers to look half as cool as it does in the promo art and has some pretty bad stickers too (the gold you see on the elbows in the pictures are sliver thin foil stickers which get wrecked when you move the elbow) , the elbows were much more complex than other mgs i've done for pretty much the same amount of articulation too
you definitely gotta be feeling confident with your detailing skills to get the most out of it

Look into the Gundam 2.0 if you are a fan of the anime.
3.0 is amazing if you like the hyper realistic look and the challenging build.
The Origin version is neat, it comes with a lot of stuff and has pretty good articulations. Plus weapon effect parts.
But the 2.0 has several advantages.
-Very stable model
-anime accurate proportions and lack of panels to look more like the show Rx-78
-All of the RX-78's weapons( including the javelin, gundam hammer, and super napalm attachment for the rifle.
- A stand for the core fighter.

Thanks friend. I plan on posting the rest of the 67th mobile squadron when I get the chance. Currently working on weathering my zaku . I totally agree on the m4 stock, I love how "modern" it makes the zaku machine gun look.
If anyone is curious, this is what I did.
Used dawn soap and toothbrush to scrub off the factory anti mold junk.
Took decals from an old fighter kit and put them on the shield.
Used a file to make gashes in the armor, and roughened the edges of the shield.
Dug into the shield to try and make impact damage.
Added tamiya weathering powder to make certain gashes look like glancing blow from a beam saber or bullet.
Finally finished with some tamiya flat clear to see in the decals and weathering.

I've got an MG Turn A . It's a great kit, comes with a ridiculous amount of stuff. The rifle is hard to pose sometimes because it is really big. They only give you one gundam hammer which sucks, but it's still nice. They do give you a cow so you can put it inside the Turn A's chest. Oh and the cock-pit can turn into the core fighter. Possibility is fan-fucking-tastic, though his shield and thigh armor can be annoying.
Lemme caution you on some stuff. The Head Turn A symbol thing is a dry transfer. It is shit. Just get a green metallic gundam marker and paint it, then wipe off the excess with a wet q-tip. Also, he has this armor on the sides of his thighs…if you splay the legs out, they will pop off.Be careful of posing him with his chest missile silos open, they lock into place when you push them in, but when they are open, they don't really have anything securing them in. They have fallen to the ground several times when I have bumped him on accident. And one more thing, when you are constructing the eyes, you need to put a foil sticker on the inside to allow it to catch the light. MAKE SURE YOU DO IT! I had to deconstruct the head because I wasn't paying close attention to the manual.
He's an excellent kit with some amazing qualities, I highly recommend him.

Or should I put them in the collection group? This is my first big contest, and I wanted to spread my dudes out, but I think I have a real shot of winning with the Zakus or the Gouf and I'm worried putting them in the collection category is dooming them to failure.

I have been derping around with some of the IBO weapon kits and found that some of the weapons are compatible with UC and typical fair(saying this because IBO suits have smaller hands.)
Basically:
The Graze's hatchet fits very well in the hands of the Gouf Custom and Zaku F2. The rifle fits too, but…it seems a bit off.
The Battle Axs for the Gusion and Rebake fit well in the hands of the Dom, and you can get some decent poses out of them. Especially the one with the flail.
The Gusion Chopper ie the little cleaver esque weapon looks great with a Zaku or Gouf. It kind of makes the MS look like an oni.
The Missile Launcher for the Hyakuri fits well in the hands of any feddie MS, and can be used on Zeon suits, though it has a hard time making it over the shoulder on Zakus and Goufs.
I will say the hyakuri revolving grenade launcher can't be used with most UC stuff. Which makes me sad, I thought it would be perfect for a Jesta.
Basically, they make for a good cheap option to do some squad building and diversify your suits if you don't want standard weapons or you don't feel like scratchbuilding. If anyone want to seem some photos, lemme know.

I am happy to find out the pink beam cloaks on the MG (at least my MG) fit MUCH tighter than the ones on the HG. These things require a fair bit of force to dislodge once clipped into place.
The shield has an opening gimmick that hides the beam saber but the hinge on it doesn't open as much as displayed in the diagram and it's impossible to get that damn thing out without taking the part off. Other than that and the weird double jointed elbows and knees due to it being a transforming bird, pretty fun.

I'm thinking of getting the Zeta 2.0. But I honestly don't give two shits about the wave rider mode. I've heard it's pretty stable for a transformable kit, but how crazy would it be to glue the inner-frame in places to make it more sturdy but non-transformable. I just don't see myself transforming it more than once, taking a few pics. And then only ever posing it in it's normal mode. If down the road I wish I could have it posed in wave rider. My plan is to paint up an old HG Zeta I have and just pose it next to the MG in wave rider.

My HG Wing Gundam, Crossbone Gundam, and Victory Gundam all have issues with their torso separating at the middle. This is just with me fiddling with them, I don't jerk my kits around or put them in extreme poses.
I don't know if anyone has been having these issues, but I've been noticing this has been a problem across multiple suits. It mostly seems to be a problem with smaller kits. IBO and most of the kits I've listed are smaller than average HGs.

Yeah, I've been checking out the original series for the first time lately and I'm finding I like the Zeon suits way more than anything the federation comes up with. The Gundam is iconic, sure, but even the Dom looks way better in my opinion.
Yeah it's a real grade. It's cool for what it is, a miniature MG, but it's also really tiny and fragile in general. I've barely done any play with it and the nub inside the arm that holds the shield in place is almost worn down comletely and part of the arm keeping the shield in place broke off.
The Gouf's shields also don't have the best connection, being just a peg in a hole, and after some minimal removing and inserting to pose it the right side is already incredibly loose.

You need a 3mm pin vise for the drills, it's super easy. The only other thing is the sideskirt, whish you can either putty then drill it, or make a new one. That's what I'm doing.

All the qubeley MGs look similar from internet shops, has anyone tried them and seen if there are any construction differences? If they're the same, I'd buy Haman's colors, but if the puru models are built better I can just repaint them.
If nobody has tried the different models I'll probably buy all three and do my own review, but with how little free time I have and how long my backlog is, it might be a year before I get that done.

I mean it's specifically selling around 8x better than the other IBO kits, I should clarify that this isn't conjecture on my part but something one of the employees actually told me based on his experience with ordering, inventory, and customers, when I asked about a Barbatos kit.
I think it's probably a combination of it being the new kit, as well as its lower cost from the lower amount of plastic it uses. It's way easier to impulse buy a kit that's like 10 bucks compared to one that's like 20-30. Also it's got a really unique design kind of like Turn A, but unlike Turn A its probably got a wider appeal.

Hmmm…I've been thinking about making SD/HG conversions of the starting suits from MS Saga A New Dawn. A GM and a Zaku 1
Another anon in one of the earlier generals had this REALLY neat looking EZ-8 that got me thinking about it but there don't appear to be a lot of super good SD GM or Zaku 1 kits around…
Seems like that's the easiest way to match the proportions in game. SD kits even the newer style ones seem to be a bit off still…

Haha, that's my Ez8. It uses the 8th ms team 1/144 kit for most of it, the MG's shoulders and forearms covering the former's parts, and the SD's head. I can go into more detail on certain parts if you need help.
I'm planning a Gouf Custom in the future, using the same steps.
If you're gonna do zaku 1 best mobile suit, you might have to convert a zaku 2's head.

Awesome, I freakin' love your Ez8…and yeah I think you're right about the Zaku 1 although that wouldn't be the hardest thing to do. The older SD kits already have some big problems that would have to be addressed if I wanted to use one of their heads, so just remodeling it wouldn't be that much extra work.
The GM actually has a similar issue but it wouldn't mean as much if I just made MS Saga scale versions of the God Gundam and Master Gundam.

If a Master Grade, RE100, or HGUC Revive kit that I really want comes out, I'll do another straight build like a filthy casual just to get me back into the swing of things.

Maybe, but most waterslides and decals for Gundam are Zeon or EFF related, and this is an AGE suit. I don't think they ever made official AGE related waterslides due to the lack of AGE MGs (MG Gafran and AGE-3 never ever) Also I find decals are sometimes too flashy or just pointless (thanks Katoki).

Because they're disgustingly loose, I can move the legs just by picking up and tilting the entire suit.

While we're at it, what's the best method to get rid of nubs?
Is it really just wet sanding?
I don't know if this is the proper way, but I use either an xacto knife and carefully slice off the residue, or I use a nail file when it's just a little bit that the rest of the file wouldn't hit the rest of the model.
I'm guessing the extra stuff I haven't tried doing yet help cover up the marks even wet sanding leaves like paint and topcoat/matte finishing.
The problem I have is that on stuff like an RG or MG are the really tiny parts. Is it just straight up practice and skill that people do to get those looking good?

I saw this bad boy at Barnes and Noble and decided to get back into Gunpla. He came out pretty good I think, considering I had to make do with a toenail clipper.
I gotta ask though, are all modern HGs this fragile and finicky? Sure, he looks cool, but posing him is a bitch, the weapons and armor pieces keep falling off, and even the feet come off all the time since they're only held in place by friction with a polycap. I intended to get the Kamiki Burning and Lighting Zeta next, but if they're as delicate as the Rinascita I think I might have to get some other Gundams since I like playing with them and not just displaying them.
So with that in mind, what are some solid, study high grades from recent years? Are the revive kits good in this regard?

I found this. Laugh all you want, the painting tutorials from White Dwarf magazine show you all the basic techniques you need to paint plastic models. Another thing I found so striking about this tutorial is the fact that the guy is basically doing the same stuff the 2 Animania articles suggest you to do, even keeping the parts seperate, so you can paint everything.

HG Wing gundam molds are notorious for having bad joints, especially in the armpit polycap. Something about the baljoint they mold isn't exactly right so they all suffer.
Lightning zeta is amazing, but the backpack sucks balls and the waist joint is super lose since it's heavily reliant on the PC-007 style ball polycaps. It also has the super articulated forearms of the Robot Damashii ZZ gundam.

I fucking did. All it has is the differences between paint types, information on airbrushes, and some techniques. Nothing I asked about is in the guide, otherwise I wouldn't have asked it. It's not listed because where you get it isn't really important it's more of what type you get that matters.
Are you going to start with hand painting or rattle cans?
Hand painting I recommend vallejo acrylic paints. That shit's great for 40k and small details, but I never really recommend hand painting on gunpla if possible since large flat surfaces show brush strokes.
For cans I started with krylon and walmart shit in highschool. That stuff is for furniture and large things like guns so particles are very large compared to hobby spray cans, which have finer particles.
But above all, use fucking google. You can find tons of guides online by people much more experience. Don't look for anything specific, just read and google ANYTHING that comes to mind. It's what I did, and there's so much more information there than sitting in a slow board. Look for military, aircraft, and train guides especially.

1/12 scale means they might be too small for some of the larger MS (like CCA era stuff).
The Little Armory stuff is also pretty complex, has lots of tiny parts, absolutely require adhesive (not cementing; the parts are too small) and are VERY fragile. They're scale models first.
If you're planning on using the guns for smaller MS Little Armory is a better choice, but if you're using them for bigger MS or just want larger guns you're better off checking out Kotobukiya's MSG line, which also has the advantages of being simpler builds (less parts, larger parts, snap fits) and WAY cheaper.
Girl here has a Little Armory anti-materiel rifle, Hrairoo has an MSG bazooka.

The series is mostly super cheap, super simple weapons and accessories like thrusters and such, but they've been making all sorts of weird gimmick shit in the last 2 years or so including stuff like a 00 Quanta style combining sword with clear parts, wind-up and electric-powered rotating gatling guns, spring-loaded pile bunkers, and light-up beam sabers.

It looks kinda, you know, off. Each piece is a solid colour, while Dolores's actual design has lines all over it. The molding itself is fine, it's just lacking all the colour detail.
I know you don't have to paint it because it's coloured plastic, I'm sure it would a lot better if you painted and detailed it yourself. There are some reference pictures you can work from.
But doing that stuff correctly takes some practice, so I'd say to do that RX-78-2 kit first (and maybe a few other kits after that, try doing the Dolores kit when you've got the hang of painting and detailing).

Yeah, the kit you posted clearly had a decent painter work on it. Seeing an unpainted kit after that makes it looks terrible in comparison. Just be glad you decided to ask here about it before you tried to assemble it, you would have gotten a rather nasty surprise otherwise.
>>14630
In fairness, a lot of kits do. I think this one looks especially bad just because it's semi-coloured, so it looks like it's finished kit that's lacking tons of detail. It reminds me of a McDonald's toy, actually.

I'm further confounded and excited.
Today my thunderbolt psycho Zaku II arrived and it looks fantastic. I've opened the box up and I'm astounded by all the sprues this thing comes with. If Gyan was the lower end of the HG spectrum this is definitely the high end of high grade.
The guide talked about there being a lot of variations of HG but it's caused me to be really blown away by this kit.
Also I got slammed by customs today, 3 more kits arrived for me but I gotta go pick them up and pay arbitrary extra, what a pisser.
Looking forward to putting it all today and taking photos. On the topic of photos do any of you use higher quality cameras and lights for your pictures? I've been having quality issues since I can only take photos during daylight due to shitty point and shoot with weak ass bulbs.

Not related to gunpla but, would repainting this metal piece with clear coat red retain the metallic feel? I got an airbrush so figured why not but I don't know wether spraying some Tamiya Clear Red would get rid of it's metallic feel.
Also, what paint is good for spraying metal parts in general like aftermarket parts for plamo? I know Hotwheel hobbyist use a different type of paint to retain their metallic feel but what is it actually? It's not acryllic right since it would create a more plastic-y feel?
