Maybe read the book instead of just copying the drawings ? Take your time and learn anatomy the slow and proper way. Get Bridgman's or Richer's book and start reading. After that, start doing life drawings with écorché drawings over them to apply what you have learned and to study how it appears on the live model. This is an effective way to study anatomy, not just copying as much as you can in a set period of time. This "challenge" may be cute, but doesn't sound very useful.

Maybe not for the average artist, but this nigga was in art school at 8 years old, I'd hazard a guess he was a savant even.

Holy shit. This seems brutal as fuck, but it feels like just what I need. I'll try to set a date and report back with results.

It was really tough, but it was an interesting experience. I'm glad I did it. I doubt it imparted me with a ton of anatomical knowledge or whatever but it really helped with my confidence by forcing me to draw things I really rather wouldn't have, and simply by being among the longest possible drawing practice sessions I can imagine. I will never be intimidated by drawing gestures or a specific piece of anatomy for an hour or two again.

>I'll try to set a date and report back with results.

Awesome, keep us posted.

That sounds pretty helpful. I'm timid as fuck when I approach full body pose drawings, so my sketchbook is just a bunch of well defined, but disembodied heads with scratchy impressions of a body. Funny thing is, I wouldn't even say I'm completely shit at bodies, I'm just so shitpants scared of fucking them up that I get hung up on so many things along the way, then I end up thinking too hard, overwhelming myself, giving up, and just flipping the page. I know if I just loosened up and let go of perfectionism I could probably reach the level of understanding that I want to faster.

Might take a long minute before I get a good time to try this, though. I live with my family so there's always frequent expectations to be doing things around the house or favors for my mum. I only get solid free time days when everyone is gone, but I really do wanna try this out.

Here's another meme-challenge I'll be participating in. 1 Week 1K; basically I'm going to try and draw 1000 of one thing over the week. Because I have a week off of work coming up I'm going to try and squeeze multiple things into this challenge.

My goal: 333(+1) "x" each day. If I can beat that, I will, if I can't make it that far either due to running out of time or without killing my hands I'll try and find a compromise and adjust accordingly. I'll figure that out as I go along, I guess.

(missing days are work days)

Thursday: hands

Friday: hands

Saturday: hands

Sunday: thighs/knees

Monday: thighs/knees

Tuesday: thighs/knees

Thursday: lower leg/ankle/foot

Friday: lower leg/ankle/foot

Sunday: lower leg/ankle/foot

…and so on

Wish me luck, bros

Thanks bud, I begin tomorrow morning. We'll see how it goes, I suck at hands so hopefully this will help just a tiny bit. I know Rome wasn't built in a day but I had good luck forcing myself to draw the entirety of Constructive Anatomy and I can still see some of Bridgman's artwork in the back of my head when I draw which is…maybe a good sign. I'm not sure honestly.

I woke up around 8-10am and finished around 2am, so yeah thereabouts; I wish I'd paid more attention to that. I was a bit sick, my drawing was interrupted with coughing quite a bit (I'm still coughing and it's driving me nuts). It was brutal but not as much as I'd thought it was going to be. I only really started getting apocalyptic thoughts towards the last few pages.

Tomorrow I'm going to try and sketch 333 hands using my own hand as a reference, my strategy is I'm going to move my hand very slowly and hold it as steady as possible almost like I was animating; we'll see how that goes.

meme arrow time:

>rely almost exclusively on own hand for reference

>can't draw hands worth a damn even when looking straight at them (the completion of each and every drawing was like a punch in the wiener)

>instinctively cover my mouth when I cough using my "free" hand - lose pose

>instinctively hit ctrl-z when an errant line appears - lose pose

>run out of room on the canvas constantly and instinctively use the hand tool (h) instead of the scroll bars (the hand tool won't work when bound to the stylus itself for whatever reason, it seems) - lose pose

I've only done 88 now and it's been 4.5 hours since I'd begun this post. I can see the writing on the wall as far as reaching my goal for the day. I feel like I need to approach this with a bit more organization, and self-awareness regarding some of the things that have held me up so far - including a final decision on just what details to include or omit from the drawings themselves. I'm going to call today a failure, scrap the current attempt and start again from scratch soon, possibly tomorrow. I will still be drawing and studying hands intermittently all day, just not with a particular goal in mind. My poor results and the resulting butthurt I suffered are proof enough that I'm on the right track as far as what I should be drawing, anyway.

I totally blew it, guys. I know I've got a whole day left but I'll be at work tomorrow; I'm nowhere near close to 1000 and I've chosen to concede defeat at this point in time. This outcome definitely makes me laugh at my earlier posts and how ambitious and confident I was. Regardless, I'd like to try again starting thursday. This time perhaps I'll switch to physical media and photos instead of digital media and my own hand which I was unduly adamant about.

My closing thoughts are I was in no way prepared for this. The hands themselves are among the most characteristic and individualistic parts of the body and when I felt the discrepancy between my own hands and those that I'd drawn out of Bridgman books in the recent past I basically went into every drawing with an almost panicked, claustrophobic feeling. That sounds crazy and maybe it is, but as I'd said earlier I feel like I'm on the right track with this. If your drawing looks like shit and makes you feel like shit that's probably a good sign that you're focusing on the right thing.

I wouldn't call him a mascot-but with his can-do attitude I'd at least call him a muse of sorts. It's my belief that if you can draw Boltman from any angle you are well on your way to artistic proficiency.

Oh I know. I think I was there for that first thread where we tried to draw BoltMan. It's MUCH harder than you'd think. The intersecting face with that strange 3 dimensional bolt of lightning is crazy good practice.
