> "I want to be an artist too and make something like this!"

What was the animation, comic, manga, whatever that made you say this to yourself?

That's a fun question. When I was a kid I would rent video games from Blockbuster or even buy them, and the first thing I'd do is read the instruction manuals cover to cover to scan for character art. Shining Force 2 with its anime/storybook illustration style and Phantasy Star IV were big inspirations in that regard; both of them had "cut away" art in the form of battle screens or comic/manga panels in-game which featured highly detailed character animations and illustrations which were pretty much unprecedented at the time as far as I knew.

I've tried many times in my youth to start drawing but gave up within weeks every time. I only recently started making a real go of it in my late 20s. I'm 32 now and I still suck absolute cock though, so I don't know what to say.

The earliest memory I have of drawing was copying the official pokemon art, for some reason I found that very fun. I don't think I've been "inspired to become an artist" by anything, as far as I can remember I've always been interested in it.

As far as inspiration in general, watching Murata stream him drawing OPM was very inspiring, makes you want to start your own manga. Not that I didn't already want to do that prior.

Oh yeah, I forgot. Another big inspiration was "Robot Carnival", basically a Japanese "Fantasia" featuring a bunch of different animators. My parents bought me that when I was very young and I thought it was rad

My middle school book fair had copies of a manga called Desert Coral. Looking back it wasn't very good, but after that I really wanted to draw a comic. Even when I was really young I was making stories and drawing which has never really stopped, so I got inspired to do it for real in my early 20's because I had some really compelling material to work with.

No idea. I've always drawn and never stopped.

It wasn't media, it was my older brother being into drawing.

When I was a small child, my grandparents and I would catch this show, I think it was called Pappy Drew It or something, where we would follow along the instructions and draw pictures. My grandparents always encouraged my drawing, buying me crayons and pads of paper.

The Picasso meme that everyone is an artist as a child is true. I don't think there was any one thing that made me think "I'll be an artist". I'm not, and have no real desire to be, a professional artist. But I never lacked encouragement, materials, ideas since my dad was a professional painter and messed around with other stuff like stop motion animation, which he taught me. Drawing was probably the only thing I had more of a knack for than anyone at school, so keeping hold of that little bit of social capital was motivation, plus I always enjoyed the process of drawing. Smh I fell out of practice (but didn't consciously quit) because of "adult" things getting in the way and only started grinding back mostly what I'd lost again recently.
