>in an English seminar
>see that the guy next to me has written some notes in his textbook
>the text is Faulkner's Barn Burning
>the notes are the Norwegian translation for "barn" and "mule=female horse"
Not gonna make it.

The seminars are great! It's all Anglo literature, so there's a lot of good stuff to choose from and there's rarely any assigned reading that I dislike. In the lectures we go into the backgrounds for the stories/poems and techniques and stuff, while in the seminars we mostly talk about how we'd proceed if we wanted to write essays about this stuff.
In Norwegian it's "muldyr", literally "mul animal"! And in Finnish it's apparently "muuli", so even that's an easy connection to make! Not that him not having heard the word before is the main problem, though, the main problem is that he somehow managed to look it up and get the completely wrong definition.

That's a whole bunch of uhh… Stuff alright! Nice that you're enjoying it though. Any fav assigned books yet?
Unfortunately I thought a mule was just another name for a bison lol, but yeah weird how he managed to get the wrong translation.

I've had a real Amerikan in me a few times, if that counts!
>>425988
No assigned books as of yet! Just short stories and poems. With the favourites so far being Alice Munro's Everyday Use, Ted Kooser's Abandoned Farmhouse, and extra special love for Robert Hayden's Those Winter Sundays! Just a lovely poem: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/46461/those-winter-sundays
Jeez! I think I figured out why he messed up though, 'cause if you go on Wiktionary and hurriedly look up mule, you'll see that the last two words in the definition is "female horse".
>>425986
Well I mean, it pretty much is! Just smarter than donkeys, hardier than horses, and easier to care for than both.

Well glad it's been all good so far anyways.
I'm really bad at reading poems since i never know how the rhythm of it goes. Was comfy though.
It makes no sense that i didn't know it since some religious songs say jesus rode on a mule. or something.

And, confusingly, the name comes from "mukhlòs", meaning "male donkey". That just muddies the waters further!!
>>425991
Even the first line kinda blew me away! "Sundays too my father got up early" just packs so much stuff into a single line, instead of saying like "my father worked hard every day" or something. It's super nice!
Waaasn't that a donkey, though?

At least "horse" sounds powerful and "donkey" sounds fun but "mule" just sounds like an insult.
Maybe he just enjoyed the sight of the rising sun.

pretty efficient, creative and clever and stuff getting that through to the reader without outright saying he worked everyday as you said!
it was, that's what i meant. that i should have known that mule is a donkey thing

What about the fact that you can also use the word "ass" for "donkey", though?
A valid interpretation, but not one really supported by the rest of the poem as far as I can see!
>>425995
Exactly! It's the first time I've wanted to actually track down a poet's books and read one or two.
