Gamergate was the main catalyst for bringing a big portion of people to 8chan. They came first, then everyone else followed. I came over in sepetember or october of 2014.
There where a lot of communities here that aren't really anymore. And the top boards where way higher quality then they are today.
There are still comfy smaller boards like this on 8chan. But /v/ and /pol/ for example are horrible now.
If you want a nice community I'd still suggest 420chan its always been my bunker (and I wass permabanned from 4chan numerous times over the years). 4chan dosen't do it for me these days, but I haven't been a regular there since early 2013.

I'm sort of the exact opposite. While I enjoy a good game story? I could care less if it has one. I'm there for the gameplay. Now some of my favorite games are story focused. But overall I really can live without it.

Overall? That'd be really hard to say. Mass Effect / Fallout were definitely my top series, with Borderlands a bit behind those two.
2015 my favorite game was FO4, for 2016 it was Battleborn.
The original Deus Ex? I played some of it, remember it being v good.
