Also it was either 40 - 80 minutes on the train to travel to the nearest station and then 20 minute walk to university for a grand total of £20 a trip, 5 days a week, or live near to university instead.

Here it's kind of different as campuses don't have housing areas, nor are they really disclosed from other traffic etc.
Although there are student housings, but those cost pretty much, and people would rather not work at the same time with their studies as the benefits you get from the government don't really pay well enough for you to have more than enough to pay for the rent and survive a few weeks with like 20$
Kind of more preferential to stay at home for studies, unless you live like 30 miles away.
