Making a stamped receiver work for an SMG is easy, so easy in fact that literally everyone in WWII was doing so. If anything, the milled AKs prove that the basic design principles of the assault rifle had been technologically feasible but not economically viable. If not for the stolen German technology and engineers, they would have never been able to have the confidence that a design like the stamped AK would eventually be cheap enough to accept into service as the primary infantry rifle.
