What books are you reading?
Anyway, I have astrally projected from waking many times. And when I was younger and not into occult stuff I did dream-entry into lucid dreaming (I forget the terminology, not WILD but the other variant).
Since then I have lost the ability to do it easily, just from working and everyday life resulting in not doing it anymore. Trying to relearn it again.
Some thoughts:
* Doing it from waking does not have to be difficult. If you can meditate and relax you can do it. There are terms for "astral body" which is your body as your mind kind of senses it. You need to disassociate your physical body from your astral body temporarily. This is done by relaxing your physical body and feeling or "vibrating" your astral body. And then you just move your astral body. Getting the head to separate is the hardest imo, if you are in a bed I find that the so called "rolling-out" - method is the best. (You roll out of bed and your body). It seems at any rate like you need some violence in the movement of separating your head. On this matter, you may try to play around with the impulse of sitting up rapidly. That is you find the impulse that comes before action and you don't do the action until you can feel it applying only to your astral body.
*Thoughts I am kind of processing*
I have been focusing on memory and remembering in general. Making some affirmations to remember. You have dreams every night essentially and part of being lucid is remembering contexts. This is true in life and in dream life.
I no longer believe in dreams being just dreams, like they perhaps do on r/luciddreaming. I also believe, in accordance with what many occult writers say, that dreaming is the same as astrally projection. The difference between entering a lucid state during a dream and from awake I think is the order in which "fall asleep" and establish your context. The last three words are a bit imprecise but it has to do with what a "lucid state" is.
I don't think the "lucid state" is just realizing that you are dreaming obviously. I think in the material plane you may well be not lucid at times. Lucid is some meditative state, not sure exactly what terminology to use.
Lucid dreamers use "reality checks", I don't want to do it in that way even though it is obviously effective. It is because I do not want to affirm that dreams are not real. I may use the techniques in a modified way, but for me the entering into lucidity should not be associated with the words "this is not real" or whatever it may be.
*Books I have read on the matter*
Most obvious relevant book is "The art of astral projection" by Ophiel. I don't remember it very well so I won't defend in it's entirety, but the practical instruction I believe is helpful and no doubt you can employ it to astrally project.
"The way of the Shaman" I think also deals with sending you to astral planes (like essentially all kinds of spiritual travel), but with completely different terminology. I think this way is much harder but possibly deeper and more specific in some way.
