Bear with me... Okay what individual or studio was labeled as the "Russian Disney?" I remember reading about these russian films based on fairy tales and they had elaborate sets. Anyone know what I am talking about?

I don't know for sure. Where is the /tv/ kinoposter that seems to know all about Russia? I think Lev Atamanov was called the Russian Disney but he was an animator.
A couple notable live-action fairy tale directors are Nadezhda Kosheverova and Gennadiy Kazanskiy

I just watched The Snow Queen directed by Kazanskiy. Despite some impressive moments it was noticeably down market from Disney. It reminded me more of the UK Hammer studio. But I'm interested enough to see another one Kazanskiy directed - The Flying Carpet - since there's a nice version here

I dunno, I'm not big fan of fairy tales and I have not watched their cartoons for a long time.
They released interesting adult oriented adaptation of famous Russian poem ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tale_of_Fedot_the_Strelets ), but the poem can't be translated into other languages.
