What do you think of them?

Can you appreciate any musicals or do showtunes give you a migraine?

For me musicals were an acquired taste. It's still not my preferred genre but I really like Busby Berkeley for example: >>4193

Newer iterations of the classic style can be pretty annoying though, like anything with Seth MacFarlane or the thankfully forgotten Oscar "hit" Chicago.

Dislike most, but have a soft spot for technicolor

I haven't seen very many. Show Boat was a nice surprise though. I forgot it was directed by James Whale, known for several Universal horrors. I wonder if directors used to be more versatile?

The Blues brothers is one of my favorite films.

Everything Busby Berkeley did in the early 1930's is essential—not really for the music but for the sets and choreography.

any other recs?

I'm interested to see

Oklahoma

South Pacific

Porgy and Bess

My Fair Lady (I don't expect it to be better than Pygmalion)

all these musicals have something else in common...

I just discovered Jean-Pierre Ponnelle. This looks fantastic even though I've always hated opera.
