Left. Right has better and smoother graphics overall but going off only the face left doesn't look like her face has to change as much to allow for the smile while still staying in style and looking good. Sure the graphics aren't as good but I personally don't mind it, I like the original look of SA1.

The older models have shorter and thicker bodies, more pleasant shapes [the head isn't perfectly round, the body isn't perfectly cylinder, the limbs aren't long and lanky], longer muzzles, and visible fangs.
I think the 1991-1998 designs of Sonic are just simply better for all the reasons I stated.

The height makes them feel older, but in the sense that they would never he actually adult human height like in some fictions I've seen. Vanilla is just a couple inches taller than Chris, and Modern Sonic should be taller than he is in X, somewhat Chris height now, imo.
But otherwise, I just like them feeling like older characters, that grew up with me. It's just how they are styled with lanky and noodle body parts that makes them look bad, sans 06 and Riders. Pic related is the best Modern with those limitations can look, now give them better preposition appendages and the cast would look perfectly fine.
One thing I'd like back is the 90s box art coloring/shading, and have that emulated into the 3D models.

I hated them when the designs were revealed and I still hate them today. Tails looks okay. Amy looks all right but her outfit always reminds me of the pink girl from Lazytown. Sonic looks bad. Knuckles looks horrible. It's been years and I still can't get used to them.

It's because they were using the base/alpha designs for referecnes which had SOnic and co look like some abstactive mix between literal hedgehog and disney esque elements that just name off like a Lilo and Stitch ripoff. So SEGA came in and told them to fix their shit, and so Sonic Team took some of their shit and added Modern cast on top.
And likely thanks to that outburst in disapproval, they likely took it too far and nitpicked the fuck out of Big Red Button's progress to the point the game shat itself. Basically it's really SEGA's fault for saying "give them freedom" and then got triggerd they gave them something they wasn't looking for.
