If you want aesthetic advice, I would say put a little space in between the windows. Also, your Thunderbird is horrifyingly busy and tiny. That fucker needs at least twice the height you've allocated to it. On the whole, your desktop looks cramped.

Just Debian. You can quite literally just pop in the install cd and be up in half an hour (the limiting factors being your CD ROM/HDisk speed). I wouldn't recommend Ubuntu for several reasons, most glaring is the fact that the default desktop package blows (but also because they seem to lean towards the 'big brother' mindset + they sell your search data and usage statistics).

The install menu is pretty basic but essentially you just need to create or format at least two partitions (one for swap, one for OS); set some default settings like date/time; set your hostname (the text I.D. of your computer on your LAN); possible configure which packages you want in your installation (there is a default); and create a user.

After all that…

Learn about the various shell commands for Bash (default terminal shell*) and how to use MAN pages. Learn the default utilities in bin*. Learn about the folder (directory) hierarchy, package managers, and about user management with groups/file permissions.

After that basic stuff, to complete your ascension you should learn about device mounting; probing system information from various files; the NUL device; redirection with Bash, how to start services (called daemons in GNU/Linux); and how to configure/use certain core programs/services.

You may also want to change what desktop package you use (I think Gnome is default on Debian) but that's up to you.

* A terminal shell is like the command prompt on Windows only better in every single way.

** Most shell commands aren't actually built into the shell but rather stored in your root bin folder. Useful to know because you can actually poke around and use MAN on all the utilities to learn what they do.

Finally, one more thing I need to get across to you before you start is that every hard drive mounts to the root directory by default. As in there is no "My Computer" or "D:\" drive in GNU/Linux. Just one directory tree. That being said, you can mount different partitions or drives to specific sub-directories within the root directory.

And, as an extension of my last point, every device on or connected to your computer can be accessed as a file. Literally everything. Your keyboard? A file. Your PS3 controller? A file. Even the real-time information your OS retrieves from the CPU is a file that can be manipulated.

This is hardly everything but it's more than enough to turn you into a productive user. GNU/Linux practically forces you to be a power user. The downside is that there is a steep learning curve while the upside is that there is usually a lightning fast way to do anything you want. Conversely, Windows and friends have a relatively shallow learning curve but that comes at the price of consistent expediency in regards to performing various tasks.

Thanks for the long explanation. I admit I do think Ubuntu looks like shit. I'll install Debian now. All the stuff you said there, I'll save that post and try and learn alot of that.

Just out of curiosity, assuming I learn and get a decent grasp on everything you said there, how employable would I be to places that use Linux?

For me anyway, absolutely nothing. I've been using Ubuntu for a while now, and have been able to learn a lot about loonix in these 2 years I've been using it as my main OS. You just have to customize it to be a better alternative. One of the only advantages that I see of using Debian over Ubuntu is the stability; you'll barely ever crash or freeze a program using Debian. Seriously.

Pic related is my desktop. I've also included a tmux setup I often use, when I am doing HTML/CSS related shit.

Well, you wouldn't be intensely employable on this alone but this can be a platform from which to jump into various technology jobs in the Information Security and IT industry. Generally the requisite skills for those jobs are platform agnostic but you won't find a competent IT professional who doesn't know *NIX. Generally most networked services run on GNU/Linux distros such as Redhat (web servers, LDAP+Kerberos, etc.).

I'm a programmer not a system administrator so I don't necessarily know the minutia of the position but I could be one with minimal self-training thanks in no small part to my Linux knowledge. I am certified to a certain degree of proficiency (back up skill sets in case the Computer Science market becomes saturated).

I noticed yesterday there is a janice repo. The only thing to be careful of with a dist-upgrade is system-d and gtk3. Before the upgrade you will need a gtk3 theme and adjust some scripts after. I probably won't upgrade for a while, too much hassle.

did you try https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Install_from_existing_Linux#Method_2:_Using_the_LiveCD_Image?

and if the wifi driver doesn't have too many dependencies you could download it and the dependencies and install it manually and remove it and update arch once it works.

Or Fedora. I know the name sounds shitty, but once you get past that; it is a legitimately good linux distro built by a company that knows what the fuck they're doing.

The installer will work EVERY time and the default UI is pretty nice to boot. If you don't game on PC and your life blood isn't chained to proprietary software to make a living, you have no excuse to not use Linux. It's seriously better in every way.

If you do game or something, at least put it on your laptop to give it a go. It's pretty damn fun when you take control of your computing.

Now if it just boots as normal you have to hit some key while it's starting up, for me it's the delete key but it depends on the motherboard manufacturer. This takes you to your BIOS, find a setting for boot order and make sure it boots your USB before the hard drive. After installation you can change this back.

>follow installation process, depends on distro

Then once it's installed, learn how to do shit with the command line. sudo apt-get or whatever the equivalent for your distro is is important, that's how you install software. Basically just switch between your normal PC to look shit up and your linux laptop to try shit out. Some distros come with a desktop environment and browser out of the box, then you can just search shit on the laptop. Once you feel comfortable you can switch to linux full-time.

Even Arch is easy to install if you can follow the guide on their wiki. There's a ton of documentation for everything, just learn how to find it.

It's not glamorous since I didn't know how to fix that thing in the square above the "terminal mode" text, but it was better than before. It took forever to find a nice flower to use for the Mechtm image.

Cool, this looks good! The original font was OCR Extended - you seemed to find something pretty close and I like the panel effect on the lettering… I'd prefer the first flower, it resembles a lotus more so, though yours is nice. The Alienware logo seems a bit more stable, thanks.

Next up, open /etc/spectrwm.conf and remove 2px border, add margin and padding, and fix the color scheme to your liking.

This is an old netbook I recently restored from the dead, and installed ArchBang on. The experience so far is awesome! I found a number of great software that replaces their memory and cpu-heavy counterparts, and managed to turn this into a relatively productive machine. The battery life is 2~3 hours, depending on whether I'm listening to music or not.

Also, pls no bully. Only recently got into programming, and C is my first language.

Well, I mean, to get past problems, you generally just have to follow what the compiler tells you that you've done wrong, lmao; otherwise, if you've got a design flaw, you just need to think outside the box (this sounds cliché as fuck). You won't solve a problem you have with the same mentality you created it with in the first place.

Aside from programming, I've been doing scripting for a little while longer; I'm relatively familiar with bash, at this point.

Jesus, you're so dumb, lel.

You don't use <font> tags in 2015. You use CSS. It's the web-safe classic for monospace shit.

font-family: "Lucidia Console",Monaco,monospace;

Maybe before working on customizing your desktop, you should learn to use it?

You have to edit config files for any good rice, and he's just using Linux with no borders or shadows, and a tiling WM. These aren't things you can do very well on Windows, so you may as well just put the effort into installing a schway OS.

I have seen them called homepages and startpages, but really what they are is a website you host on your machine. Once you are hosting an apache server or the like, you can reach it by typing 127.0.0.1 or localhost into the address bar. You can then begin to customize them with html, css, javascript, php, etc… Most people use them to learn a bit about webdev and to make their homepage fancy.

When I began to customize a homepage I learned that webdev is not for me and then just stole a template from github and customized it slightly for my needs.

Yeah, I guess, but then your address bar doesn't look as nice as 'localhost'. Also, it taught me how to set up an apache server and I can just set my laptops homepage to my desktops IP and use the same homepage without having to have a local copy on my laptop. Then it taught me how to configure my router to let traffic come in to hit my desktop so I can use my homepage outside of my house. Then I learned all about free DNS servers. The only limiting factors in this machine are the RAM and the CPU (as mine is soldered on the motherboard, unlike in the article, which is sad), so I need a lightweight operation system which uses these limited resources wisely. Now that you provided an alternative (I tried a winxp with n-lite in the past - sucks ) , and this article is outdated about pricing, so I could get usb hubs and pendrives and N-channel Wifi cards for dirt cheap used, I am thinking about it seriously.

OK I don't want to ask these supern00b questions on some other forum.

I want to use/learn Linux instead of windows. Can I install/use it and KEEP windows strictly for gaming? I want to install Ubuntu and try to use it exclusively until I get better, then go to Debian. but in the meantime, I want to keep windows and just use it for my modern gaming needs (Elite Dangerous, etc). Is that possible, or will my computer still be susceptible to bogging down/privacy/security issues by having windows on it period, even if I just use it for games?

Also, I have 2 internal hardrives on my laptop. Would it be wise to use one hardrive for windows and one for linux?

Also, is it better to do the Live install thing, where I keep the distro on a flash drive? Or is it better to straight up install it, and if so, can THAT be done while still keeping windows?

I'm gonna be cyberpunk as hell by the time this is over. I want to learn everything

>Can I use windows and linux

Yes, it's called duel booting, and is on by default in most installers. Windows still has access do you linux partition on your hard driver, and may open you up to security concerns, if this is a big problem you can actually install a linux onto a flash drive (yes, the entire thing, not just a live environment)

>2 hard drives

That would make things really easy, yes.

>flash dirve w/ a live install

You can install it onto a flash drive just like a hard drive. File I/O will be a little slower, you'll really start to feel it if you don't have much RAM and need to use a swap partition. Yes, it can be duel booted.

>I want to learn everything

Even if you don't use arch linux, the arch wiki is invaluable for quick and dirty referencing, explanations, and examples.

Ubuntu is easy to use and almost all problems you encounter were already solved, just type error message in your favorite search engine, although it has some anal probe by amazon.

Mint is easy enough to use, no crapware and good for generic linux desktop use.

Debian is also pretty easy, and learning its structure can be handy if you want to run a server someday.

manjaro or arch if your willing to take the time to learn it and are persistant enough to stick with it. it is the first distro of linux ive used and i fell in love with it as soon as i saw it i dont even use windows anymore except for gaming.anyway i basically started from scratch and have been teaching myself ow to use it. its taken me about 2 or 3 months to get where i am which may not be very far but i can navigate fairly well and use what i need to and get it if i dont have it

I personally got my start on slackware and would recommend it to anyone trying to become a hardcore linux user. If that's not your goal, go for mint.

I put mint with LXDE on an ancient machine for my little brother (13 at the time and zero linux skills) and he preferred it to windows because it did basically the same shit but ran better.

Debian isn't bad but in my opinion has just a couple details that would throw newbies.

You are definately leaning on the science-fiction side and not the cyberpunk side if you use W10, if you know what I mean. Its not even a choice, you cannot be cyber if your desktop isn't GNU/Linux or a BSD.

Using the windows manager "dwm" on Windows is not stock W10, but it looks better than stock, so it is nice. You are going in the right direction… don't stop in your journey, make the switch to a different OS.

Void Linux. It's weird in the usual way; some packages are there that other distros don't have, some packages that other distros have aren't in there. Most of what you're looking at is post-install customization, though. I grabbed the firefox CSS from twily.info, tweaked it a bit. I'm using the cyber amber CSS for this page. Hell, I got the matrix effect in the upper right terminal from this page, too. The bottom left is a nearly untouched ncmpcpp install, I just swapped the visualizer over to wave_filled.

I cleaned up a little and also changed the keybindings and stuff. I found out how to start terms with super+enter so I'm satisfied with Window Maker. If you're like me and like 90s icons, this is pretty good. It's really easy to configure everything and you can even stick terminal applications in your applications menu, which can then be bound to a key combo for quick launching.

>>37525

Funny you mention Apple; they purchased NeXTSTEP (which this is based on) and used its technology, such as the dock, in their OS.

On the icons: I know they're not flat minimal material design and that's actually why I started using Window Maker. I like these shit icons.

Just to irk you I've turned on the 3D flip animation for when I minimise and restore windows.

The icons are grouped properly. Active windows stick themselves to the clip in the top left (which also acts as a workspace switcher), which is also where frequently used programs are pinned. Those icons with program names above them in white are actually minimised windows. The icons on the middle-left of the screen are my dock; from top to bottom that's the settings editor, terminal emulator, file manager*, clock, and tray. The dock is global, while the clipped icons are not.

Gathering the icons would be counter productive because they've been separated as you would paragraphs of text. You wouldn't want your settings manager right next to your web browser, would you?

*This is actually a hack. The name of the icon is Thunar, but it wouldn't work very well with Window Maker on my machine so I replaced its icon with a Midnight Commander one I found online and changed the execution commands.

{obligatory apology for the wall of text} alright here we go…

First i installed cmder, which is a port of ConEmu designed to be more user friendly. Cmder is basically a wrapper for your command line. We all know how hard the windows command line blows so it's a breath of fresh air for anyone who's experienced command line in *nix. It's got more features than you could ask for.

DL

Then I installed cygwin, which runs a POSIX framework within windows so you can take advantage of a lot of *nix applications (and compile your own for anything that isn't already in their repository or on github). Obviously it gives you a bash terminal as well.

DL

So once you've done both of those things, you'll need to do some fine tuning. Before you start customizing, you'll want to get cygwin's terminal set up. When you install cygwin, it's best (and necessary iirc) to install it on your main hard disk (C:\cygwin64). You'll probably want to open up your file explorer and navigate to C:\cygwin64\home\users\(whatever your username is)\ and then make a symbolic link in that folder to the C:\ drive so you can move around your entire computer in the cygwin terminal. Then launch the terminal (which is in C:\cygwin64 iirc) and punch in "lynx -source rawgit.com/transcode-open/apt-cyg/master/apt-cyg > apt-cyg" followed by "install apt-cyg /bin" which will function as apt-get for cygwin. You'll want to run "apt-cyg install chere" at this point, which will allow cygwin to play nice with cmder. That's it for the basic cygwin setup. I also installed nano text editor ("apt-cyg install nano") and a program called screeny which is basically screenfretch for cygwin (download from https://github.com/Nijikokun/WinScreeny and put it in C:\cygwin64\bin). A little googling or compiling and i'm sure you can get whatever you want patched in.

Now for cmder, i'll go over the basic stuff that I had a little trouble with to spare you the pain. To get cygwin running in cmder you'll need to go to settings>startup>tasks and click the plus button to add a new task. By defualt it'll be labeled "groupx" but you can change that, and assign a hotkey to it if you care to do so. Then in task parameters you'll want to enter: /icon "%CMDER_ROOT%\cmder.exe" (with the quotation marks). In the field at the bottom you'll enter "C:\cygwin64\Cygwin.bat -c "/bin/xhere /bin/bash.exe '%V'" (with the quotations again). Everything else is easy enough to tweak on your own, just go down the settings menus from top to bottom and configure everything, the ConEmu FAQ is pretty helpful too, (http://conemu.github.io/en/ConEmuFAQ.html.

I play music through MPlayer compiled for windows (http://mplayerwin.sourceforge.net/downloads.html) and running in cmd, but I'm sure you can get something more attractive running in cygwin.

Below is the cmder task info for my window split (be sure to include the quotation marks, also YOUR_USER_FOLDER needs to match whatever you see in the profile for cmd)

Name: (up to you)

Task parameters: /icon "%CMDER_ROOT%\cmder.exe"

the first entry in the bottom field: > -cur_console:d:"C:\Users\YOUR_USER_FOLDER" -cur_console:C:C:\cmder\cmder.exe cmd /k "%ConEmuDir%\..\init.bat"

add an empty line, and then on the next like add: "-cur_console:s1TVn -cur_console:d:"C:\Users\YOUR_USER_FOLDER" -cur_console:C:C:\cmder\cmder.exe cmd /k "%ConEmuDir%\..\init.bat"

empty line, next line: -cur_console:s1THn -cur_console:d:C:\cmder -cur_console:C:C:\cmder\cmder.exe "C:\cygwin64\Cygwin.bat -c "/bin/xhere /bin/bash.exe '%V'"

empty line, next line: -cur_console:s2THn -cur_console:d:C:\cmder -cur_console:C:C:\cmder\cmder.exe "C:\cygwin64\Cygwin.bat -c "/bin/xhere /bin/bash.exe '%V'"

you can set this as the default launch task somewhere else in cmder's settings…

Those were supposed to be download links for cmder (http://cmder.net/) and cygwin (https://cygwin.com/install.html), I recommend the full install for cmder.

I'm using lynx browser in CMD because I had already compiled it for windows before I got cygwin, but cygwin comes with lynx preloaded so i'd just use that if I were you.

I think I'm forgetting something else but I'll follow up if it comes back to me.

It did with mine as well but that was because I had multiple WMs installed and the old one was still controlling the wallpapers. I ended up going into /usr/share/lubuntu/wallpapers as root (I'm running Lubuntu obviously, YMMV) and pasting the wallpaper I wanted and renaming it to lubuntudefault.jpg or whatever. Yeah, that's the logo of the semi-fictional Copland OS from Lain.

I say semi-fictional, because there was an actual OS named Copland (named after the composer) made by Apple in the 1990's, intended to be released as MacOS8 before development went screwy. A lot of the concepts from Copland made their way into OSX, the actual MacOS8 that was released was just a slightly-polished version of MacOS7, and Copland itself was abandoned.

Presumably in the Lain universe, Copland was successful. There's actually a lot of interesting alternative OSs and WMs in SEL. Lain's father uses something that looks like NeXTSTEP, and BeOS gets a lot of references.

I've had it for a while now so I know some basic terminal commands but I still don't know how to do things like compile stuff properly. I also installed feh and that broke my wallpaper so I have to run a command every time I start up. The man page says to put something into .xinitrc but I can't find anything called that and if it doesn't exist I don't know what the equivelant is on my machine.

Anyway, I have i3 downloaded but I don't know how to actually make it do things as in how to set it as my wm.

A terminal multiplexer is a software application that can be used to multiplex several virtual consoles, allowing a user to access multiple separate login sessions inside a single terminal window, or detach and reattach sessions from a terminal. It is useful for dealing with multiple programs from a command line interface, and for separating programs from the session of the Unix shell that started the program, particularly so a remote process continues running even when the user is disconnected.

Now I don't have my eyes bleed when I use a gtk3-dependent piece of software

Obviously a few teething issues with getting the right things to work in the right places, and it's still got a few things I should fix (like cpu current usage monitor on the panel) but overall I'm happy with the result

It looks like it also supports xfwm and possibly others, too

The most resource-intensive part by far is transferring the OpenGL framebuffer to the RAM (with glReadPixels), and then to an Xlib pixmap. I don't know if it's possible to transfer the VRAM directly into it. Rendering is nothing though, since it's only about 20 triangles with flat shading. The CPU load is not too horrible since you don't need 60 fps for it to look good, but it produces way too much heat for summer.

I don't know what mplayer uses. I got inspiration by looking at the feh source code (which is such a clusterfuck I think you should look at it just for shits and giggles).

I am trying to make black on grey terminal theme going on, since I find this setup easier on the eyes, but… am I going colorblind or bold green on grey is completely unreadable to you also?

Yellow and cyan give me troubles too, but not as much.

I tried making all colors darker, but then programs that rely heavily on colors and assume black background (alsamixer for example) start looking like ass, and it is equally unacceptable.
