Usually people go “hehehe fricken stupid mormons” and I agree. Mainstream LDS is retarded and likely in apostasy. But Smith’s own claims are, in my opinion, a lot harder to discard. For example:

Claims that he divinely saw and translated the book of mormon from the golden plates (3 signed witnesses saying that they say the angel Smith saw, eight saying they saw and handled the plates); the main translation period of the roughly 270,000 words was done over 50 days, which necessitates 3-4,000 words a day. Smith dictated this, with no revisions, small breaks, and always resuming his dictation straight after these breaks. There is no evidence that he was considered by anyone to be a prodigy or exceptional prior to the alleged revelation, and he had no formal schooling.

Three options I see, for this claim specifically, is this:

1. Smith was divinely/demonically inspired

2. Smith was, suddenly, a biblical, literary, and oratory genius

3. Ignore all witness accounts and say he was lying and a conman

I think (2) and (3) can be dismissed immediately. (2) because that seems incredibly unlikely and also I'm not aware of anything that could cause this. (3) because you'd then have to apply this same treatment to other historical figures, which I think is probably absurd.

This leaves (1). I think its unlikely that Joseph Smith was divinely inspired because of Matthew 7:15-20. "Beware of false prophets… by their fruits you will know them". I don't think Joseph Smith was evil, and I don't think most Mormons are evil. I think there's probably a great deal of good that Mormons do. But I feel that Mormon theology (like about God once being a man who ascended to Godhood, and that we can do this too?? - I'm not an expert in Mormonism I might be wrong about this) feels like a deliberate attempt to lead people astray.

"Being like God" is what the serpent tempted Eve with in the garden, so it seems suspicious to me that Mormonism would claim that we can become like God
