The biggest thing that I think will help you, is the concept of "more practise = more skill", and the opposing one, "less practise = less skill". Socialising is a skill like any other, the more you're exposed to social interactions, the bigger your social "muscles" will grow. You'll notice the one thing in common with all social outcasts, who no friends and an apparent inability to socialise, is that they avoid people and social interaction.

This goes for me as much as yourself, when I was at college I just stood on my own at break or went for lonely walks, and in class I didn't say a word. I'd then come home and lock myself away in my room until I needed to go to college again, and that continued for 3 years. Then I became NEET and locked myself away for another 4 years. It should come as no surprise that I became completely socially retarded due to serious lack of practise.

However, this was not permanent. Admittedly I haven't worked on it as much as I could have, but I'm already noticeably better at it than I was 3 years ago just because I've not been avoiding interaction so much.

It's alright, I don't mind telling, I lived with them until about 17, late 17 I was almost 18, when I was kicked out/I left for a multitude of reasons, including general abuse and sub par living standards, I ended up crashing with friends for as long as I could then got into uni, I actually did well in College, so I got a student loan for everything and lived with best friend that I've known since like the age of 2, we lived on the same estate at that age went to all the same schools right up to uni. I paid what little rent I could. Got degree got a nice job, 26 now. I found out my family was killed when I was 22, I remember because I was still living with friend trying to get a proper job at the time and he was a real help. There isn't an official reason I know of why they where killed I was never even contacted by the police, maybe they didn't have an address for me, but I've been told it was over money/drugs which does not surprise me.

FF7 is a game that was very ground breaking for JRPGs in 1997, and it was the first in the main series to be released in Europe, but it's aged like milk, and in my opinion makes for a pretty shitty introduction to the series. Well I was like this and much worse for a good 7 years, but for the last 2 years I've been doing fairly well. However, I've been doing pretty shit since I left work and came back to my mum's at the start of December, although things were beginning to fall apart since the middle of October. I'm still keeping track of my "progress", so I can see I've had a grand total of 13 days that weren't 100% hikki since coming home.

My sleep pattern has reverted to the non-24 state I was trapped in for years, likely because in those 3 months at work there was so much disruption to all of the routines I'd spent so long developing, as well as being in a constant state of mental and physical fatigue. Because of this, everything else has suffered such as my diet, personal hygiene, leaving the house, "social skills", confidence in general, etc. For the last 2 months it's been almost as if the 2 years prior had never happened.

There's also an element of disillusionment too. I previously felt like there was the vague carrot-on-the-stick of one day having my shit together, learning to drive, getting a job, getting friends, etc, and this "goal" was really the driving force behind me working to improve myself.
