What are the chances they can successfully propagate in North America?

Maybe they would have a better chance of surviving there, where poaching is more strict, than in Africa.

Which is to say that an ecosystem can be transformed, possibly irreversibly, without even having the extinction of a species. We've done it with overfishing of top-level ocean predators. Some of the top-level predatory fish have been supplanted by other species and it seems they may never regain their trophic dominance even after relaxing catches.

Now when you do take the extinction of a species into account they never just go alone. The presence of mammoths in ice age tundra also had a mutual reliance on certain vegetation. One can't just be brought back easily without the other.

Howdy faggots, I'm about to get a ball python. My room is always kept 70-80 degrees (day & night), and the cage is big enough (10.5x24 and probably about 18 tall, inches btw) IF I'm able to let it out occasionally, which I can absolutely do.

A lot of people on python-specific forums mention having a heat pad that covers no more than half the tanks length, while no less than a third, with a "proportional thermostat"

(basically something that regulates the heat pads power output so it always keep it at an exact temp), along with a thermometer with a probe to observe the temperature of the warm AND cool side of the tank, since they need a warm and cool area.

Basically, I'm just wondering if all that's really necessary, and if so, what brands would YOU recommend?

I'm continuing my research atm, just want some sort of live feed back. I didn't see any reptile threads so maybe I'm in the wrong place, but thanks anyway fellas :)

Hello anon, let's talk animal rights. More specifically, let's talk about better treatment and a better quality of life for our dogs.

We should address the problem of pet overpopulation with more humane methods of sterilization such as vasectomy and tubal ligation for dogs instead of spaying/neutering.

Dogs sterilized with vasectomy or partial hysterectomy remain hormonally natural, which allows them to live more natural and fulfilling lives. This is much more humane than spaying/neutering.

>Vasectomies have a chance of not taking

This is why you sterilize both the males and the females.

>it sometime takes a month for the…

Same with neutered males; the same amount of sperm still exists in the "tubes" of a neutered male right after surgery, and the hormone levels take a few weeks to drop. So on this front, there's no disadvantage to the more humane procedures.

>isn't nearly as practiced therefor there will be a lot more fuck ups

>and it's also much cheaper.

This will change as vasectomy and partial-spay become more popular, and hopefully, over time, the normal procedures for sterilizing dogs.

 No.593

The price will not. It is a more advanced surgery, that is all there is to it. A larger incision, more sewing, more delicate procedure, more tying, more time under anesthesia. It takes maybe 5 minutes to neuter a male dog. Vasectomies take at least 4X that time with vets who are familiar with the procedure. You have to be a lot more cautious with organs you intend to keep in working condition.

If you're looking for something that will sterilize an animal in a safe matter and be as less intrusive as possible, I'd suggest reading into chemical castration. Neutering via zinc is being done today on a small population. I don't think it's at the point where it can be widely used yet, as sterilization is only something like 80% effective and takes many months for it to work. But I think chemical castration, when perfected, will be the answer to just about all animal overpopulation, including pets smaller than cats and rabbits, like hamsters and guinea pigs.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against vasectomy and tubal ligation as a whole. If people want to do that, all power to them. However, I don't believe it will be the answer to pet overpopulation, and therefore don't believe it should replace spaying and neutering. The main factors of pet overpopulation include money ('it's too expensive to fix my pet' from pet owners) and time ('we don't have enough time to fix all of these animals today' from vets and vet techs). Both of those factors would be worsened by vasectomy's and tubal ligation's longer, more tedious procedure.

If people wanted to keep their animal's hormones, I would much rather them have their animal sterile, anyways. It's not a good thing to advocate to everyone, though. Keep in mind, the average dog owner can not take care of a high energy dog, let alone a dog with hormones still intact.

Something to consider is that an intact dog, even if sterile, is still considered an intact dog on it's registration. That means higher registration fees, and higher fines if your dog were to get loose even though it is not able to reproduce.

That's nice, but here's why that's bullshit:

Different locations have different laws.

Some specifically say "spayed" & "neutered", some say "sterilized", and some further define things beyond that.

Doesn't necessarily make that statement wrong. A sterile dog is still intact, because intact refers to the lack of surgery that physically detaches sexual organs, hence 'intact'. While some places have different rules regarding unfixed, fixed and sterile animals, a sterile animal is still considered intact medically even though unable to reproduce.

first off wolves would rather fuck dogs than fight dogs, that why your stray mutts genetically pollute the wild populations (dogs aren't particularly keen on fighting wolves either - they have to be conditioned for it in wolf hunts).

secondly wolf behavior isn't anything remotely like you think.

wolves are pack animals. they don't fight mono a mono. Alone they are usually (barring rabies) timid and quick to flee from the scene, especially at human presence (it is foolish to assume that wolf attacks do not happen however, as wolf packs can and do maul humans on occasion).

and finally there are dog breeds that will hunt bears, dude. Caucasian ovcharkas were bred for it.

if you think this couldn't take down your one wolf you need glasses or a brain.

Kongs are a life saver for dogs if you need to leave them in a room or crate for long periods of time, or just to mentally stimulate them. Kongs can be filled with treats like in the pic, or just with the dogs (appropriately measured) regular meals. For dogs new to kongs, I would recommend only filling it up a third of the way with treats, and smear peanut butter around the opening but not over it.

Also, the 'tantalizer' part is actually supposed to be a hole to prevent pressure building up if you stuff your kongs to the max. Because if you tried to clean out a kong stuffed completely with, say, the kong paste, and filled that little hole, there's a chance it will plop all over you once you put a finger in. Physics, man. Of course, you can avoid that by knocking the kong against the side of a trash can or sink to dislodge the insides

You may need to keep outside time short for dogs with shorter fur, or put a coat on. Keep their paws off the street/sidewalk if your area uses salt that hurts dog's pads. Unfortunately you won't know if the salt is pet friendly until your dog's paw pads are injured or you notice your dog limping or favoring feet. Make a time limit for how long your dog can be outside for depending on the temperature, and make sure he comes in to warm up even if it looks like he is having fun. Dry off paw pads, belly, etc after a tromp outside to ensure your dog isn't licking off harmful chemicals or road salt off himself.

That's all I can think of at the moment. I would invest in a coat and try the booties but keep in mind most dogs won't tolerate the boots.

I wish my ichthyology class had covered sharks more (freshwater pleb here), but I'm having a hell of a time looking this up. Anyone have any idea what the function of this anatomical feature is?

It doesn't appear to be a synapomorphy of any one shark clade, and so many sharks have it that I'd be hesitant to assume it's just a vestigial artifact of development.

I'm sure you can come up with the same speculation that anyone on here will tell you.

I have a (fancy) goldfish and 2 pictus in a 30 gallon and am chastised for it often. Goldfish alone get really big and create a lot of waste. If I don't keep up on regular water changes my one pictus will grow fat with bacteria

I should actually get around to posting a pic of my faggy ass tank. I added Hornwort which my fish seem to not eat and it grows like a fucking weed
