My rooster died this morning (pic related) let's post some nice pictures of chickens. He was so good natured, nicest rooster I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. He will be greatly missed.

I love you Rubin.

What a cute fellow.

My Shogun died two weeks ago as well, he was a big placid Brahma guy.

I found a praying mantis in my shopping cart today just as I entered the store. It was a large brown one, like this one here. Must have come off of some of the bushes in the parking lot before the carts were brought in. It fought me and tried to run away, but I managed to scoop it up without hurting it. I left the store and let it crawl onto some bushes at the edge of the property. There's a nice backyard on the other side of the fence, so maybe it'll live a while.

Mantis thread?

I have only seen a life preying mantis once in my life. I don't know where these things are hiding all the time but I always miss them.

OP again. This was only my 2nd time seeing one in person. About 14 years ago, my grandmother caught one near her place of work. We kept it in a terrarium and regularly fed it crickets from a pet store.

I can see lots of these gals at my parents house during summer, in fact I picked up one a few days ago. She tried to get away from me a few times but eventually I think she figured out I wasn't going to hurt her. She then proceeded to attack my face.

My young sister was playing with my cat earlier today and fucked up his jaw or something. His tongue hangs out of his mouth and he can't stop drooling. He isn't meowing like he's pain but he is acting very stand-offish from the rest of the family which is very unlike him. I suspect that he can't eat or groom himself because of the problems with his tongue and jaw.

Worst thing is, I'm poor and don't have the money to really take him to a vet or get some kind of surgery done on his jaw. Would getting him fixed cost much money? Does anybody have any suggestions as to what I could try and feed him? I would appreciate any suggestions here. I've never browsed /an/, so forgive me if I'm doing something wrong or stupid.

>Would getting him fixed cost much money?

Yeah, a lot. There are services like CareCredit which allow you to spread out the pain but animal surgery (and human surgery, for that matter) is not cheap.

If you can't afford it you're going to have to put him down. For his sake, I hope you make your decision fast.

Got half dozen guinea pigs. Menu is hay/pellets/vegetables to all.

Abyssinian 5 year old male eats tomatoes and cucumbers and gets diarrhea. WTF???

Began a couple of months ago and first time he almost died of severe dehydration…

Today I directly linked veggies with diarrhea and changed his menu to fix the problem.

But still don't understand… why only that one gets sick?

 No.526 [Open thread]

I have a cichlid fish given to me by a coworker who wanted his cichlids out of his community tank for obvious reasons.

He gave me two, now I have one.

He's great - really curious and friendly and intelligent as fuck for a fish.

His tank is decked out just the way he likes it and he's glorious and happy and colorful and healthy.

What else can I do to make the little guy happy?

He's alone in the tank right now.

Would he enjoy a pretty female companion?

Or would he just get sexually frustrated if she doesn't want to mate and beat the shit out of her? I've heard of that happening.

Or would I end up with a million baby cichlids?

Is there any way to have a mated pair but prevent them from successfully making babies?

Also would he enjoy having some agile, hyperactive top-tank dwellers to chase around?

I don't want him to get bored or lonely. And whatever other fish I put in the tank, I want him to remain the alpha dominant fish.

Was thinking about rummynose tetras, or tiger barbs, if I do get more fish for him. Suggestions would be appreciated - the fish will just have to be a species that are faster than the cichlid, naturally hyperactive so they won't get stressed if he chases them, and have compact fins so they won't be too badly damaged if he manages to nip them a bit. Freshwater, and 75-80 degree farenheit fish

I have never had cichlids before. But I know they are usually kept in community tanks with ither cichlids. (Of the same region) From what I know you cant mix new world cichlids with other kinds. I would google this more. just search your type of cichlids care sheet and tank mates

Alrighty /an/, I found a young/baby mouse in my garage a few days ago, which I assume was orphaned. It had all it's fur, but it's eyes weren't open, although they kinda started to open today. At the behest of my younger brother, I'm keeping it in a small cardboard box (about 6 X 7 in). I'm sure it'll likely die soon, but it doesn't hurt to be hopeful. Most google results recommended feeding it puppy/kitty formula that's extra watered down, and rubbing its junk with something like a q-tip to help it go to the bathroom, but the people who asked those questions seemed to be talking about even younger mice, that are only a couple weeks old, and I don't really know if that info could really apply to mine. I tried the formula, and got him to lap up a tiny bit, but other than that I haven't been successful in getting him to eat/drink anything. He does have small teeth, and I can feel him lightly nibbling my hand when I let him on, and he'll also lick my hand a lot, which leads me to think solid food would be suitable for him to eat. He's pretty mobile when he's warmed up, too. I have his box sitting on top of my cable box, which is pretty warm all the time, and gets even warmer when it's on. Anyways, my biggest priority at this moment is getting him to eat, but I'm not sure whether I should keep trying liquid food, or to get him on solid food, like seeds/nuts, I really have no experience with rodents. Any of you guys have advice? I'm not a hopeful guy but it would be bitchin if he/she pulls through

I'm down for a rodent general

>tfw people drop mice off at the shelter by the many dozens

>lol whoops mice breed fast who would have thought! Here's 40 of them all in the same 10 g we're just keeping the breeding pair to feed pinkies to reptiles!

These fucking niggers came in so often with their mice that the shelter director actually had to stop allowing any animals besides cats and dogs. Those 2 niggers ruined it for everyone. Every 6 months they would come in with a ton of mice, and we didn't have the space, housing, or resources for them and not a single one got adopted; they'd either escape, we'd give them away to volunteers/employees, or they would die. And every fucking female was always pregnant by the time we got them.

The babies were really cute, though

Update on the baby mice:

>1 went missing and was very young so I presume it's probably dead

>4 died of natural causes

>1 to an accident

>1 from a combination

>4 went to a store

>2 went to a nice home when they were little

>1 went to a home when he was older

>I kept 2

There's now 5 new babies, 3 of which I am likely going to keep and 2 I need to find homes for. I think this will be the last of the breeding for some time. The little shits sure can multiply.
