I have watched tons of anime that was supposed to scare me but only a couple have actually managed to do it. I honestly cant think of any horror that is actually scary besides Higurashi When They Cry and Shiki. I did like Malice@Doll too (while it is original) but that wasnt that scary and (thanks to it being an early 3d anime), it looks terribly dated. What seems to be "scary" according to most of the industries eyes is:
>tons of blood and gore =! scary
>characters look like monsters =! scary
>is focused on the supernatural =! scary
I mean, where is the feeling of dread? Where is the immersion? There is none and that goes for most anime under the "horror" umbrella

Had a similar discussion on the bunker a few months ago, but that was in relation to video games: http://archive.md/rDEYZ
Actually, looking over the manga that I have read, the only one that really had any feeling of horror to it was the original Devilman, and that was primarily because the final volumes dealt with how the demons played on humanity's fear, with the public proceeding to lead a witch hunt against anyone and everyone. And, speaking of which, the final volume of the original Hell Girl had a similar situation too. Actually, speaking of which, of the two, Hell Girl actually had a better feeling of dread to it overall with watching the story unfold, with everything leading up to the poor sucker getting whisked away, and everything afterwards with how characters have to deal with the fact that they literally did just "murder" someone (Or watched/know someone else just "murdered" someone).

Le Portrait de Petit Cossette might be the most interesting ova I have ever seen but I would not classify it as "scary". I think the real problem is that the genres classification (it can mean the feeling of disgusting or loathing after an event happened) does not require it to scare people so often times you dont know exactly what you are getting. But, maybe that isnt a problem at all. Maybe by stripping away subjectively at what is and isnt scary actually loses horrors allure? Still, I do agree that anime falls short in horror fiction and I think it could be much better. Most horror in anime is just cliche

Speaking of horror this reminded me of Souboutei Kowasu Beshi which I started reading on a whim, at first it was really creeping me out with some of its art but it's constant tone shifts between horror and lighthearted humor (including the art style) really threw me off and after a few chapters it felt like it was turning into a battle shounen.

>What is in your opinion the worst genre?
A comedic slice of life in a school setting with cute girls doing cute things. "Worst" is hard to apply to anything but this is high on my list for sure.
Now I'm not opposed to any of those things individually, even 'Sakamoto desu ga?' manages to encompass the first 3 with great success. I think what gets to me if you add 'cute girls doing cute things' is that all humor will be derived from that.
Witch Hat Atelier is a good example of how to weave 'cute girls doing cute things' into a great story where it's not the main focus but a nice wholesome relief between some of the darker themes.

I find a lot of SOL's boring. I recently watched an episode of Dear S and hated it. Only modern SOLs that I enjoyed from the top of my head are Yuru Yuri and Gochumon, and even those I prefer the manga. SOL's are just "muh cute girls doing cute vapid things" and Japanese humor is terrible. If I wanted to rip through CGDCT, I'd just read a visual novel. I have more things to do than to watch the same boring crap over and over again. Please make something more interesting instead of pandering to waifufags and otaku who will forget about the show in like 3 months.
I also tend to dislike shounen and 2deep4u seinen for the same reasons. I cannot take it seriously when anime, or any "toy" medium trys to input 'deep' philosophy or deep crap into the show. I believe that people are extremely slow when they call anime 'literary masterpieces'. Go read a book retard.
I also hate harem anime. It's always some retard who has no personality and no actual characteristics (literally) at all. Might as well just read a VN where the protag has no face and you're supposed to self insert. A lot of the girls personality in harem anime is terrible too. Pure unadulterated vanilla is the only answer.
Shows from LN's are usually terrible too. Only slightly interesting one from memory may be Spice and Wolf. LNs are fanfiction in novel format, and just as terrible too.

I was being pretty harsh in my comments, I wish to apologize for that. At the time of writing, I was simply cranky and sleepy.
It's not that I don't like CGDCT. Nanoha, Cardcaptor Sakura, Hidamari Sketch, Girls Und Panzer, and a lot of other anime also encompass the CGDCT technically, and I love those. It's probably just that after watching anime for years on end, the constant tropes tire me. It seems that a lot of CGDCT never stray away from formula, as most anime do, they are not alone. However, it's even more boring when they do it because it's simply "highschool girls do funny thing" with simply nothing happening, along with the same jokes over and over again. If I want that easy going feeling that SOLs bring out, I'd rather read it in a manga than actually watch it.

Harem. The entire point of them is originally to be adapted from dating sims/VNs with multiple girls, which doesn't really work. After a while, the genre started spinning off in it's own direction, often forgetting the entire point of the original games. The protag choosing one girl and the payoff from that.
