Personally, I think they looked silly. Why does the plane need an extra engine on it's tail? If the engine blows, then it could literally take out the tail too and render the plane uncontrollable. I think that's happened before if I'm not mistaken.

The only Tri-engine powered plane that Im found of is the L-1011.
The Dc10's engine looks like it's ready to fall off the tail while the L-1011's engine is "Melted" into the tail.
Plus, the 1011 could quite literally "Land itself".
