Never seen anyone discuss this show on /tv/ before.

Werewolf was a short-lived TV show on FOX that ran for two seasons (twenty-nine episodes) in 1987–1988.

Top notch practical effects, werewolf designed by Rick Baker, and it does not shy away from the horror.

Eight episodes, including the feature length pilot episode were directed by English actor David Hemmings, best known for his performances in Michaelangelo Antonioni’s Blow-Up (1966) & Dario Argento’s Profondo rosso/Deep Red (1975).

Guest appearances by Tony Todd (Candyman), Everett McGill (“Big” Ed Hurley from Twin Peaks), Richard Lynch, R. G. Armstrong, & Brian Thompson (the villain in Stallone’s Cobra & two roles in the two first seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Thompson takes over as the main antagonist in the second season.

The music by Sylvester Levay is better than anything Jan Hammer did on Miami Vice.

Shout! Factory planned to release the show on DVD a while back but that fell through due to the music rights. A French DVD release came out in 2020.

Some of the episodes have French titles/credits since they are sourced from the French DVD release, but all episodes have the original English audio.

Another underrated show with werewolves: Hemlock Grove

Based on the novel by Brian McGreevy, but I get the feeling the show took many liberties with the story. Eli Roth directed the first episode and produced the series starring Bill Skarsgård and Famke Janssen. Roth is a somewhat controversial figure, but he loves the horror genre and gialli and it is shines through when he talks about the show in the bonus material.

Was not sure what to make of the show when I first saw it; it takes inspiration from Twin Peaks with a small town murder mystery and weirdness and bizarre characters and dark comedy, but in true Roth style it goes for a lot of blood, guts, and gruesome scenes.

Sadly the third season is awful and a chore to get through, but the two first seasons are top notch and are criminally underrated and overlooked. The only thing that seems to get a mention is the werewolf transformation, which is really unique, cool and gruesome, but there is a lot more going on that I think people give it credit for; the visuals inspired by Gregory Crewdson, the references to the artwork of William Blake, the score, the editing, &c.

Had these two on my backlog for a while now, but never gotten around to actually watching them. Sorta worried they will fail to live up to the hype now.
