I would not say that women are supposed to be submissive but concede that they have 'different' imperatives. Certainly I have known some women who are assertive and fiercely independent and men who are polite and deferential when it comes to the opposite sex and vice versa.
What I refer to as 'chauvinism' is an attitude or mindset that implies that a person of another gender is somehow less capable or otherwise needs coddling despite being equally skilled or knowledgeable based solely on gender and not merit.
Often it manifests in:
>Formation of negative stereotypes
>Snide jokes at the expense of the target gender
>Nepotistic practices based on gender
>Feeling the need to make decisions for them/supersede them
I have observed both the male and female forms of chauvinism in the workplace.
By comparing the role of the man to the parent, there is the unsettling inference that women are basically children…
