Got ahold of this shit early and just going to preemptively warn everyone of citadel’s latest scam.
Contrast paint was marketed for noobies however the paint itself is just high pigmented oil wash. You are supposed to paint it on in one thick coat which is the marketing excuse to say its for beginners and if you move it around at all the shit streaks.
You cannot paint while this shit is on either. You literally have to sit for an hour while it dries before you can paint over it. Also it stains models like no tomorrow so if you have the desire to paint an army like the brazen claws or do some designs like harlequin checkers or Iron Warriors hazard stripes stay away.
This paint is fucking horrid and I really encourage you all to stay away from it.

Sounds like the disastrous effects of trying to lower the skill floor for further casualization has backfired on them. Not sure what they expected to pull off here. Teaching yourself the techniques and honing your skill at assembly and painting is a big part of the hobby. They may as well just sell prepainted minis if they really want to make it easier for people to start playing.

Anon, I'm sure it's being overhyped by marketing, but if you've tried to paint checkers or stripes with it, that's on you. How about trying dry brushing with a wash next - come back & tell us how it goes.
Contrast is designed for babbies to get literally something on their minis as easily as possible, with some niche applications for intermediate-advanced painters in easy wet-blending. Show us a pic when he's dried & I guarantee he'll look like a passable-but-not-great tabletop standard. The only real problem I see with them is if they really take off, you might get a lot of people getting trapped with them & never graduating to using big boy paints.

If you're incapable of understanding a hobby that rewards time, effort, skill, and creativity by getting props from the person you're playing against, then you're not very capable of empathy, and probably autistic. I don't do miniatures, but I fully understand and respect those who do. It's really cool to see the level of artistry of some of these anons. Trading card games are another that I don't do, but I certainly understand why some people would enjoy collecting rare and valuable cards, mastering a deck well enough to know exactly what sideboard card is best to deal with X opponent, and to see someone push their knowledge of a game so far that they can beat any opponent most of the time. Hobbies are rewarding the more time and effort you put into them. Money usually helps as well, but since time = money, most people who've spent hundreds of hours learning all the lore and minmaxing in their prefered tabletop are no different in terms of respectability as a guy who can compete in a company sanctioned card battle. If there was a difference, it'd be that sometimes you can actually win money in those sorts of hobbies, whereas you won't see a dime for all the hours you sunk into pathfinder/dnd/gurps/etc.

The problem is that I do understand the reward coming with effort, but I can name several more rewarding things than this - and I can't figure out what exactly is so entertaining in this particular game. If you'd insist on staying with figures, I would learn to carve them myself instead of giving money to a jewish company. I think my biggest gripe is the price of them, and the amount of people willing to fork over the dough for that.

Because it is effective. You haven't provided a single argument to the contrary. It isn't like making a figure out of wood is rocket science, I don't know what the fuck your problem is, honestly.
> can be equally distributed to any player interested in the game without creating large chasms of skill in creating said pieces
Not every player can afford buying designated pieces. Because they are fucking expensive. I don't know why you're going out of your way to make a claim that there's NO alternative to a designated plastic toy from your favorite jewish developer. And yes, I've seen people doing it. Because what's wrong about it?
>take a giant log into a friend's basement
False equivalence. Anyone that isn't a millenial numale who has to buy everything from designer stores to show off would appreciate the effort and initiative to create something for the game. It's like claiming that you can play chess only with top brand plastic pieces.

I'm gonna ignore all this shit as you've ignored all my points conveniently just to nitpick the tiny details and to show off your knowledge of fallacy listings. It doesn't take a person with great intelligence to realize there needs to be a general template of design for a world already pre-existing with plenty of lore that needs a fair representation on the table, lest it gets dilluted by any kid trying to whittle wood into generic chess-like pieces. "this piece that looks like picasso threw a piece of tinder in the fire represents my titan" isn't gonna keep people's interests. You're essentially arguing that introducing normies to the tabletop is a good thing, to which we all know it isn't. Sure, there are skilled people out there who could make a wooden figure, and do so well enough to impress an opponent. However, ask that same person to whittle an entire army, and see just far they go. Fuck off, and get off this board.

It was just an analogy with chess. Nothing is stopping anybody from adding more details, depending on the skill and experience.
>You're essentially arguing that introducing normies to the tabletop is a good thing, to which we all know it isn't.
Tabletop gaming is already infested with them, don't think that what I propose (and what you're so adamantly against) is going to make a huge difference.
>However, ask that same person to whittle an entire army, and see just far they go.

I like painting minis that reflect 40k's flavor and fiction.
I lack the time and technical proficiency to design and fabricate to a professional level of quality every mini I want to paint from scratch, so I purchase them from GW and/or recasters. I compensate them for providing to me a product that I am not able to make on my own. This is a basic principle of capitalism and I refuse to believe that you don't understand that.
No matter how well or how thoroughly someone articulates why they enjoy a thing, they're not going to reason you into deriving emotional satisfaction from a hobby you don't care about. It's like trying to convince someone that a food they dislike tastes good. You might be able to demonstrate the merits of that food, but you can't argue someone into liking the taste.

The funny thing is that the contrast appears to be working correctly. Look the the arm holding the bolter. The pigment is pulling away from the raised edges to simulate edge highlighting, it's pooling evenly on flat surfaces, and it's settling down into the grooves and recesses. I'd wager that once this mini dried, it looked pretty much as-advertised.
Far as I can tell, contrast is just a form of heavy glaze, and seems like it ought to work fine when applied accordingly.
