tfw you spend 60-70ish hours beginning to flesh out a setting, commission an artist out of pocket and provide literally everything your players need only to have 75% of the party cancel last minute on the first scheduled session. I am so fucking angry right now.

Why would you commission art when there is so much available on the internet? I think you just set your expectations up way to high. It's like imagining yourself looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime and getting frustrated that you don't look like him after one outing to the gym.

It happens to us all, hopefully you've learned a lesson in regards to the folly of unbridled optimism and will be wiser for it from now on. Thinking everything would just go right because you believed and put the work in... If only that were how it worked.

But even more so, hopefully you'll power through it and draw strength from the experience rather than wilt in despair. Yes, the world will disappoint you at every turn, but that's no reason to give up. If anything, it's all the more reason to fight harder. Turn the frustration into motivation, do a better job in the future by applying the lessons learned from failure, and force things to work out. Or at the very least, keep at it and you'll find a non-flaky group eventually. We all had to work at eventually finding the right group of people through trial and error, and that's if we ever got there at all.

And on a side note, you commissioned art? Dang, now I feel even lazier for never drawing more than a world map for my campaign.

I think "turn frustration into motivation" is dangerous advice. I would say that if you get frustrated, you should sometimes stop and reconsider whether you are hurting yourself on some level, and whether you need to drastically change.

Sometimes the story ends in tragedy. I was in a very toxic codependent friendship with a narcissist. He used tabletop games to manipulate everyone in his circle of friends. Most of them figured out that he was a megalomaniac early on, and thus cut ties to him. I was stupid and kept getting suckered along for years. My horrible personal decisions wasted years of my life and have impaired my emotional health severely. For years, I tried to keep gaming with that guy and his former friends because I was trying to "power through" and turn frustration into motivation.

I eventually found some non-flaky, non-crazy tabletop groups, but I didn't have a strong connection to them and I stopped doing much tabletop gaming. Tabletop games are a huge part of my past - I spent years of my best creative energy on them. But I feel my creative energies have been mostly wasted, because most of my efforts served to lock me into toxic relationships.

So your self-pity - is it "deserved" or "undeserved," in your opinion?

And who other than you gives a toss about your opinion?

Rule 1

Stop being a faggot. You're not impressing anyone here with your whiny attitude after your blog post about how your (((Significant Other))) hurt your feelings by rolling dice and hurting your character to hurt you. The fact you went off on a rant after someone told OP to find the positive in the situation and to learn something from the event tells us something's off with your head. Your point of example didn't stem from "turning frustration into motivation" at all. Your DM sucked, and you insisted on sticking with them despite knowing better. That's you being retarded, not motivated.

Getting picked out of the crowd because you speak differently isn't intolerance, it's pattern recognition. I'm not saying you have to adhere to the cultural mores of the places you visit, but you probably shouldn't act like a dry, sandy cunt when people realize you're not a native.

Might not be the place to ask as I'm fairly new to DnD (playing it, live in Alaska, can never find a group, would spend a lot of time reading up on the books I could get my hands on, etc) and I was curious what my GM is thinking with rules like cantrips being able to heal 10+ because he uses the "heal" skill and Con modifiers on top of the 1 point it would usually do. Not to say the bard casting touch healing spells through the air isn't annoying either or the cleric being able to pray to his god as a bonus action every round and summon lighting to smite like 4 full health fuckers at once isn't annoying, but yeah. At level 2. Meanwhile I can summon a spooky ghost hand

Do I embrace the bullshit and keep playing or talk to him and try and see if there's anything salvageable here. Had fun a few times and not many groups for me to choose from.

That's an exceedingly generous way of handling healing and extra actions. I don't think everyone else at the table would be happy if you argued to take away their cool toys, but you should at least ask your GM to give you a similar opportunity. Cite the fact that everyone else has some powerful bonus on their side. You're not asking for special treatment, but if your GM is going to run things this way, it would be fair to give you something too.

You should probably do as >>415635 says. If you want a more disorganized sprawl, like the kind you get with really old cities, you could probably make a brush shaped like a rectangle buildings are usually shaped like that in urban sprawls and set the jitter and angle tilts pretty high. There's a guy on youtube that describes the full process here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQL2hK2O5aA

My most effective advice is to be as lazy as possible when making maps. Intelligently designed and planned urban environments do not feel lived in.

OP: was this an online campaign? Cause if so I am afraid that you have no one to blame but yourself. Actually, no, they are still dicks, but you cannot put that much effort into a campaign with randos online. Even people you know IRL that's a big risk. Online randos? You might as well post your credit card number, you'll be fucking yourself over less.

>>saying "stranger go home" is caring too much

>well, some of us believe borders are good

Let me explain. This type of Internet community requires enthusiasm from its participants. This can be positive energy like cooperation or negative energy like flamewar drama.

(if you are not a mod) when you say "stranger go home" you are feeding the drama. You are handing out free subsidies of emotional stimulation to bored trolls who will latch onto any stimulation.

The mod on this board does not often lock threads or ban users. Even if the mod tries to ban users, 8ch.net has a porous architecture and it is hard to keep people banned. (Many people evade bans unintentionally because the system does not keep them out if they accidentally change their ISP or physical location.) If you want "strong borders" you need to ban problem users. Since only the mod has the power to ban, you need to get the mod to want "strong borders."

If you really want to be able to ban users, you need a forum more like rpg.net, which enforced usernames and logins and stirred up ungodly levels of drama so that users would fear the "banhammer." (Of course, that drama attracted trolls and radicalized ordinary users into trolls.)

8ch.net is a very tough territory to defend, even when the mods are willing to expend time and energy on banning.

There's online map generators and a few downloads that will do the cartography for you in an attractive way.

For characters there's Heromachine.

There's not much you can do when flakes bail, just write off the ones that didn't show, and re-use the material for a different party who aren't assholes. Or maybe a novel or something.

75%... that's three out of four, or six out of eight? Either way that sucks.
