Demo actually isn't very good against tanks. He spends too much time reloading. On expert, tanks always come with normal bots, so the demo is too preoccupied with crowd control to go for the tanks anyway, so generally one or two other people follow it. Pyros are the best for tanks on difficult missions because they have cheap, consistent damage with high ammo capacity.

Demo's shit gets wrecked if anything gets within melee range, which will always happen on crowd control no matter how well you try and manage it, especially with bots surviving sticky blasts and flying around. Resetting the bomb is extremely important if your team is decent and has some capacity to push back after beginning to get overrun. That's why you have the heavy. Resetting a few bombs can gain you lots of extra time as a team to recover and get your shit back together, and an early reset sets the tone for staying on top of things to begin with.

Demo rarely has to fight bots up close; the demo should be standing off to the side of the robot spawn and be careful not to draw aggro. If a bot does get close, the grenade launcher is a great self defense weapon.
Resetting the bomb gives a couple achievements and nothing else. It wastes time, gives bomb carrier time to get buffs, and wastes damage output.
