and yes, weechat is indeed the greatest. its ui with the buffer list is much nicer than irssi imo. i prefer to compile it myself though to disable all the external plugin functionality, so weechat is less than 1mb.

weechat runs in the terminal and has a text user interface (built with ncurses). by UI I meant how the application presents itself. there's more than just a window with the chat. weechat can also show a list of open chat buffers and a list of connected users as sidebars. I personally really like the buffer list. irssi doesn't have such a thing as far as I know.
