Born as a mutation/evolution of Spurdo Spärde - itself a permutation of Pedobear -, Gondola started out on Ylilauta's /int/ board in 2015 as a meme with a high pedigree ancestry. And true to its roots, Gondola quickly found an audience not just on the Finnish imageboard, but also made its way into the Anglosphere, where 8chan's unique nature made it easy to set up a fanboard which elevated it to the status of 8chan board-tan.
Gondolas are a race of heads on two legs. Although individually unique traits are spotted on occasion, in general all gondola look alike to the point of being identical. They're brown and bald, with dots for eyes and a nose. The only accent of colour on them is their yellowish snout. Directly under their head are two long legs, slightly split apart from each other, with no toes. Gondola are silent (despite many artworks mistakenly representing them as speaking Spurdish) and will generally only express happiness. While they can feel other emotions, these are usually hidden behind a blank stoic stare.

Gondola is an observer. It takes in the world silently, without acting or participating, as symbolised by its lack of arms. Oftentimes, seeing the state of the world leaves it saddened and melancholic, which is further enforced by the isolation in which its observer role leaves it. On the other hand, its complete acceptance of the world allows it to attain a zen-like state in which it can achieve contentment about its current situation. By living in the moment, a happy scene can leave a gondola in perfect bliss, for however short or long. This wistful melancholy, tinged with existentialism but also optimistic nihilism, has helped endear the gondola to many an anon, who can easily identify with it on some level.
