Major hot whites, crushing blacks, green tint, less detailed than the Harmy version.

Replying to myself.
I just took a closer look at the screenshots, I think the problem is more that the 4K version is darker overall. That might have been carried over from the film print itself, but that can't really be fixed that easily. If a film is too dark it's too dark.

That's the exact point of the Harmy despecialized versions considering they are despecialized to begin with. Except they are going through every frame of the movie from multiple sources to get the best quality and coloring available that they can work with.

No they aren't, they are supposed to recreate what a respectful Blu-Ray release of the OT would have looked like.
>Except they are going through every frame of the movie from multiple sources to get the best quality and coloring available that they can work with.
If that were the case, there wouldn't still be inaccuracies.
Even then, because DeeD uses the Blu-Ray: It's impossible to exactly recreate the original compositing of the film with that as the shots on the Blu-Ray are digitally recomposited, sure, it looks better but it isn't the exact version people saw in theaters which is what SSE and 4K77 are aiming for. That's why it's called a "Theatrical Preservation".

The comparison shots of Admiral Motti are particularly interesting because there's been some debate over whether the officer uniforms in ANH were green or gray. I think the common belief right now is that there were only 3 colors of uniform: white/cream (for ISB), black, and green. I know 501st doesn't allow gray uniforms anymore because they argue someone who worked on the film told them there were only green ones.

I've spent some time looking into it and, in my opinion, the color was probably some approximation of the "feldgrau" color of WW2-era German uniforms. This is a gray-green color that came in a wide variety of shades. In certain lighting conditions it could appear either gray or green. Specifically I think it's probably Grüngrau (or "Feldgrau Nr.2") from this chart.
This would make a lot of sense, since the uniforms of the Empire were based on German uniforms. Many Wehrmacht officer uniforms were even made of a gabardine twill, which is what the Imperial uniforms were made from.
Currently the 501st encourages use of an olive drab uniform (last picture) that I don't believe is entirely accurate.

The despecialized editions are abominations. They're not even the original films but some kind of Frankenstein's monster slapped together of the SE releases and a bunch of stuff, including completely fanmade effects and things. I liked some of the changes in theory, but not in practice. the original films have a consistent 'feel' throughout, that squarely places them in the era they were made (late 70s to early 80s). the addition of 90s sfx clashes with the overall composition. that's true even if the ideas are good, and not all were.
>>23366
greedo shooting first undermines Hans entire character arc, that's why it's a bad thing.
then of course, there's the most glaring problem with ANH SE, which is the insertion of CGI Jabba the Hutt. in terms of storytelling, pacing, and composition, it strikes a discordant note.

I've seen 1977 Star Wars more times that I would like to admit but I'm still surprised more people haven't realised yet that there are in fact four colors of Imperial uniforms: black, white/cream, light gray and gray/feldgrau.
Only the gray/feldgrau and less so black officer tunics were carried over to ESB and ROTJ.
This is easily seen in the movie itself, but HD production stills and other materials are specially helpful. Look at this image from the conference room scene. From left to right we have:
- Unnamed officer in light gray.
- Helmeted Imperial guard in black (standing).
- Unnamed officer in gray/feldgrau (he's the one that delivers the scouting mission report from Dantooine to Tarkin later on).
- Yularen in white/cream (notice the difference in tone with the first officer, it crearly isn't just because of the lighting).
- Motti in gray/feldgrau.
The light gray tunic is the same color as the overalls worn by the scanning crew in SW and the Executor bridge crew in ESB. The white/cream is not to be seen again in the Original Trilogy.

Tatooine looks pretty dull and early on it makes Endor look like it has that early morning mist (reminds me of Yavin 4 from SWTOR) And not taking into account cherry picked shots like the one I posted above, sometimes the 2160p is actually obvious and does provide some improvement.

It makes Han the good guy the entire film, before he went from an illegal smuggler who had no issue with killing in cold blood (though Greedo was pointing a blaster at his face) and only cared about money, to come back at the end and save his friends at his own risk. Now that greedo shoots first Han is the natural good guy that tries to act like he doesn’t care, that Soylo spent the whole movie telling us he is. Now there is no progression of his character because he’s just good guy acting tough to a good guy.

Currently, 4K77 and SSE are still the best versions for viewing but I think the next version of Despecialized is going to change that. Especially now that Harmy is now aiming to recreate what a faithful Blu-Ray release would look like instead of what a film print looks like/

It makes sense, though. It's the only way the ANH color wheel rank badge theory works.
I read about it on theforce(dot)net forums (yeah, I know, I know…) from the guy that supposedly sent it to West End Games along with what would become their ESB/ROTJ Imperial rank guide back in the eighties (see pic related).
Notice how in A New Hope every senior officer in a gray/feldgrau or black uniform has a badge of six squares, which are either all of the same color or a mix between two of them but always a 4+2 combination. You just have to picture a wheel with eighteen colored squares (6 blue + 6 yellow + 6 red) out of which you can take any six square "rank badge".
This theory vindicates John Mollo, the uniform designer, whose work in ANH has always been terribly misinterpreted and/or ignored, specially by fags like Pablo Hidalgo.
Sage for off-topic.

It looks more green because OP downloaded the inferior DNR version. The Non-DNR version is still a bit green, the colors are still shit, blacks are crushed into oblivion. still fucking awful any which way you look at it.

Case in point, Not as green but still fucked. Silver Screen Edition is still the objective king.

>4K77 looks objectively better
The only thing it has going for it is the higher resolution. All a regrade would do is polish a shit print. A regrade would not rectify the black levels. You are totally blind if you can't see how much better SSE is to anything else out currently.
>it's sharper and less grainy than SSE
The DNR version is, but Digital Noise Reduction gets rid of detail inherently. It's bad.
