Can we get a list of the good stuff from the new canon?

Thus far I've found nothing except the mobile game Force Arena, Rebels/Clone Wars, Thrawn Novel, Tarkin Novel and the Quinlan Vos novel

Lords of the Sith is an decent book that I've never seen mentioned here. Certainly better than the vast majority of the nucuckery.

Lords of the Sith was a pretty good book but after Paul S. Kemp's Twitter tantrum I cannot in good faith recommend giving him money. Zahn's Thrawn book was good enough that I'm still looking forward to Alliances, which may be the last piece of official Star Wars media I consume for the foreseeable future. Tarkin was also a good novel and it was intended for print before the Disney buyout so James Luceno didn't have to change much. As a general rule, most of the stuff that was published before Episode VII came out is worth a look except for Cuck Wingding the Soylaac's abortion of a trilogy.

I've read the Vader and Maul comics. Your mileage will vary on whether or not you like the new Sith lore they dump onto you. Dr. Aphra is a character that left a bad taste in my mouth from those comics and it doesn't help they tried to give her an independent series run (which I don't think anyone bought). The Lando mini-series was nice.

I like seasons 2 and 3 of Rebels. Dave Filoni started roleplaying too much in furry communities while writing the series finale.

Can't recommend any of the new games being made by EA if that needs to be said. TOR I think is still worth playing for free or Preferred Access, but that's mostly because it's the last piece of "Legends" stuff still maintained even if it is on life support.

All in all that's probably more earnest recommendations than you'll get from the rest of the board, but I've never been a wholesale EU diehard. The new trilogy is stepping on their toes more than mine. Again, the quality of stuff is on a general decline ever since the debut of Ep.VII, so the chronology on wookiepedia is your greatest ally. Somewhere between TLJ and Soylo I stopped looking for diamonds in the rough, though, so I don't think anything besides "Alliances" will even get my attention.

The only reason the Tarkin novel is good is because of Luceno and the fact that it was originally written for the old canon. Zahn is a good writer so even he can make shit look good despite the nu-canon limitations.

When Kanan died, instead of becoming a traditional force ghost, he became wolf. Turns out loth wolves are the true force spirits and the guardians of the portal to the space-time nexus. Filoni is probably a fucking wolfaboo what with all the wolf imagery near the end.

Yep. He was the shitty Kyle substitute. But back before Rebels released there was a lot of talk Kana being based on Kyle and some claiming his design, background and concept art were similar to his. Regardless, both Kyle and Jan got the really short end of the stick with Disney, but at least their actual names didn't get tarnished.

The Quilion Vos novel was good until the author ran out of scripts to adapt, the last third of the book is obviously written from notes and the author had no idea how to write action on her own. All of it happens off screen in the last part of the book, vos goes evil but we never get a depiction of him doing anything. Just that he's leading the CIS forces over Republic troops while wearing a mask. Then they sacrifice Ventress for the Shaggy wanna be, which was a waste of a decent dark side user that wasn't buried in Sith BS.

That's not even mentioning the Back To the Future temple, the force has been running full tilt at becoming just magic in the shitty nu-wars. That's not saying that the EU didn't do the same at times, but I think the best lore is the stuff that doesn't make the force too useful. But there is a bit of Rebels that isn't horrible.

There's barely any good. The only decent games are Star Wars: Force Arena and Star Wars: Commander (and fittingly enough the only ones to have pre-Disney content). The only other decent thing was about 2 recent IDW comics, which is odd since IDW has been in the shitter for a long time and I thought Marvel held exclusive rights in making SW comics which have all been shit. I also don't get much of the appeal for the Vader comic. Sure the first few pages were interesting but then it just goes into forced memes territory.

In all honesty, I thought Juhani was human the first time I played KOTOR. The TOR design is slightly better in that regard- but I prefer the version from the comics, for actually looking like cat aliens. The game designs just make them look like elves with face-paint. Judging by the commercials and some of the scenes, it could have been a lot worse, but I wonder what Gareth would have done if he had full creative control, because I'm guessing "she" was at fault for the cringey "I rebel XD" bullshit, but then why was that taken out? Perhaps marketing saw how poorly that was being recieved and moved in to fix it? Why didn't they do more of that with TLJ or Soylo although that might just be because they're fucking retarded and can't put two and two together, I dunno?

I dunno man, I thought mexican Kyle Katarns acting and accent were pretty offensive from the little I saw. I started laughing out loud when he began questioning Jyn at the rebel base. Which nu-wars have you seen? For me it's just TFA and Rebels so far. TFA 0/5, Rebels 2/5 if I'm generous. I only finished marathoning Rebels just now which is the main reason I wanted to check out Rogue One. However, something about Rogue One just made me immediately want to drop it. Maybe I'll try to finish it later, but boy does it start off clumsily. I think this level of extreme dullness might classify as being offensive in itself. And whats with the ever ill fitting white stormtrooper armor? I don't feel like I'm usually this much of a nitpicker, but this caught my eye immediately. They're so obsessed with not offending nerd-cred OT-purist fan sentiment that they designed the trooper armor to look cheap and wobbly on purpose just like they did with the paper thin ducktrooper armor TFA. Hot take inc: if there's one thing I easily prefer about CGI clonetroopers, it's the sleek uniformity of it all. Sure, stormtroopers aren't clones, but when I read about stormtroopers in a novel or comic, I pictured them looking like they were actually comfortable in their armor.

True enough. Thing is, they introduce so many goddamn characters by the end of the film that the focus isn't on any one of them long enough for me to get truly annoyed by any of them. I can't even remember the names of any of them besides Jyn, and that's only because of how offensively close it was to Jan's name.

>Which nu-wars have you seen

Teechnically, Rogue Wan is the only thing I've watched through-and-through, although I've watched so many play-by-play reviews of TFA, TLJ, and Soylo that I probably know the films better than most casual viewers.

That's what happens when you sacrifice character focus and development for the sake of being as racially and socially diverse as possible to satisfy some moronic social standard that shouldn't be relevant to the art of film-making.

Welp I forced myself to finish Rogue One. That's another 0/5 from me. One of the worst movies I've ever seen, it actually made me feel dead inside. I feel so irresponsible for wasting time on it, to the point where I'm now trying to justify the time spent on other nu-canon shit as well like Rebels. At least I haven't paid for any of it (except with my time). Overall, it has been a very unrewarding experiment. I guess sometimes, you just have to see for yourself how bad things really are. All of this increased my appreciation towards the EU by tenfold (not that I ever hated it, in fact I loved it). But still. Dunno what the fuck I was thinking. I now have to spend time doing or watching something wholesome to clear my head.

Thrawn: Alliances comes out on Sunday. I pre-ordered it awhile back with one of my Audible credits, so I'll post my impressions once I listen to enough of it. Of all the authors still writing Star Wars, Timothy Zahn appears to have the most protection from editors given his previous novel. The thing that makes me a little wary is that a major point of the story is it being set on a planet that Disney is using as the thematic backdrop for their theme parks' Star Wars section. Based on how long this project has been in development it wouldn't surprise me if Zahn were obligated to shoehorn in a few things to promote that attraction within the narrative. Disney's got a long track record of building their media and theme parks in parallel like that. I still remember when they changed the time travel dinosaur ride to have characters from "Dinosaur" (2000) in it.

1.) It features Palleon as Thrawn's right-hand man. Apparently he was reintroduced to canon in the last Rebels season.

2.) Padme is featured prominently in her own sub-plot. This was not something hinted at before and I have a strong suspicion that it was mandated by the story group or KK herself.

Isn't that the novel people wouldn't shut up about and claim it was glorious just because it had the "first lgbtwhatever" character in sw? I haven't read it and I trust the judgement of you chucklefucks, but all I ever here anyone mention about it is how brave and fantastic it was for having a lesbian in it and no mention of anything else in the book by readers and fans. Admittedly from what I've been told she was a likeable edgy scumbag with a slave harem so that would be an upside if not for the whole sentimental bs Kemp tried to force about her "wife" which was only added in to show how much more progressive the sw galaxy is compared to pre-gay marriage USA and that "she's not truly evil" which is such a pissy thing to do. Everyone's become such a fucking pussy about portraying minorities as actual irredeemable villains or believable characters these days without hamming it up with some idpol agenda to show how progressive and more "virtuous and moral than though" they are.

they've only used it in the marvel, dc and product games, anything licensed from a movie just uses the film's dialogue, which actually works quite well imo. granted, the dlc missions in lego tfa all use original voice acting, but it's still not bad. besides that, old lego games had voice acting and nobody complained then, so i fail to see why now it's a bad thing.

The lack of voice acting gave the lego games that little creative spark, because they had to change all the cutscenes to still be understandable through only miming. It gave them that distinctive je ne sais pas that made the games memorable, and not just a minikit collecting diversion. When the cutscenes are just movie scenes in computer-generated plastic some of that charm is lost.

Only good thing was the de-canonization of the Y. Vong and the One Sith (Darth Talon and pals would've made great characters in an Old Republic setting or as enemies towards Luke and friends) and expanding on Jabba's rancor by actually giving it a name which would've made sense considering how much its tamer loved it, sadly its name was only given in an awful book. But even the de-canonization of the Vong is spoiled by Lucasfilm just repeating the same atrocities the Vong committed to the galaxy but under new villains. The Vong made the rebels achievements meaningless, but Disney did that and made all our old beloved heroes into shams and failures.

Another thing. I really like Jake Skywalker's look in TLJ. Hamill rocks that beard and the robe is a neat variant of the traditional jedi robes. Also, I liked that TFA showed some of Rey's daily routine, in ANH we only got a vague sense of what Luke's life was like on Tattooine. Not that it wasn't enough, but I still liked that little slice-of-life aspect.

I am about 70% through Alliances now. I think it's a good book, yes. It's Zahn and he's allowed to be himself. What might not work out in the long term is that Zahn introduced a new alien species to be the Not Vong for the nu-canon to explain why Thrawn is ingratiating himself to the Empire and what Sheev is sensing in the Unknown Regions that could threaten the Empire in the future. I honestly like them better than Vong but Disney may decided to re-canonize them and make Zahn's creative exercise null and void.

There's an action girl parallel narrative with Padme playing a prominent role, but if it was mandated by someone on the Story Group or Kennedy herself it at least doesn't feel like it. It could have been a bona fide Clone Wars episode and I mean that in the best way. If Zahn were writing female protagonists we wouldn't be lacking for nice things sacrificed on the altar of representation in space opera.

It is, but it doesn't interfere with the story and is part of why Kemp's soy spergery disappointed me the way it did. She's still a villain but at least a relatable one with believable motives and flaws. Her S.O. dying explains why she falls into a depressive decadence that she has to overcome in order to help the villain protagonists thwart the traitors within the Empire. Even with her lesbian morality pets, though, she's still a rather classic imperial officer (in the bad sense of it).

>>22869

BEAttlefront 2's only point of praise from me is that it's single player campaign made Kylo Ren look cool and the concept for his stage of invading another guy's mindscape for psychological warfare was great.

>>22906

He was also a reasonable source for Thrawn's failure in Rebels season 3. People bitch, but the Force is a blind spot in his genius. It's something he can only try to understand intellectually as an outsider but that never really works the same way. Doesn't help that Chiss society persecutes force-sensitives as impure (at least in Legends).

>>22916

They've done a shitty job clarifying that. Most people think that the Imperial Remnant was just absorbed the First Order and I get the feeling that that's how the Story Group is writing things going forward anyhow. It did think it was a bit intriguing how there'd be this Francoist Spain analog sitting there in the core this whole time but Disney's hires are lazy and cynical and don't have anything in store for that loose end.

>Not-Vong

They're talking about Snoke's stupid species which also lives in the Unknown Regions and took the last imperial remnant under its wing. They're basically a bunch of fags in robes that don't do anything except act creep and are obsessed with evil magic.

well yeah, anything they didn't put into the films was basically just thought up overnight and someone said bingo. it's also retarded, the fact that they go through all the troubles of dismantling the empire, only to decide to let it continue with whatever worlds chose to remain loyal to it is just pure cuckoldry. it's kind of like in skyrim how the empire exists but under the rule of the aldmeri dominion.

ANH gave plenty of insight to luke's life

farm moisture and dick around with his friends when he wasn't busy doing chores for his uncle and masturbating to the academy

Yeah, but for example, they didn't show how the farming process worked. What they showed in ANH is totally sufficient, but I'd have liked to see a bit more detail.

that shit is best left for things like the cross-section books, having it in the movie would be a huge waste of time as it's entirely irrelevant

That seems superfluous, like the other guy said it's better for supplementary material. Adding more expositional fluff than is strictly speaking necessary can start to fuck with the pacing of the film.

The Vong are good, actually. Parts of the NJO don't work well, but the overall concept was good and with some trimming down and proper buildup it would have made good movies.

The tentacles in their asses wouldn't be so bad if not for the corny hyperdrive engines sticking out of them, or their dreadful color schemes which look gaudy as shit. The new Marvel comics are mediocre, but at least they did the concept of space whales somewhat better (just barely though).

IIRC, there was more of that stuff in ANH's original cut but it got removed because it slowed down the pacing.
