That scene was so good. Londo and G'kar were the best part of Babylon 5. I think a big part of why Season 4 wasn't as good as 2 and 3 was because Londo and G'kar hardly ever showed up at all.

I think Season 1 gets much better in retrospect, because the foreshadowing becomes much more apparent. It's more of a stepping stone to later seasons than it's own show.

I'm watching B5 for the first time and based on the horror stories I read online I was expecting S1 to be a lot worse than it was. The only thing I can say that really stuck in my craw was the occasional sitcom-esque coda at the end of some episodes, but even that was charming in its own weird way.

The worst part is how many times you have to watch balding old men perform athletics or physical combat. The casting was a bit off with that in mind.

B5 was what DS9 should have been. DS9 eventually got 'good' but after the first season where they set up the storylines B5 really takes off and is just so fucking rewarding to watch if you have the required autism. Dukat and indeed Cardassians were so disappointingly under-developed and underutilized, instead we get to know fucking KIKE-O Obrien real well. Dukat was turned into a one-dimensional bad guy while he could have and should have been much more central to everything going on.

B5 was different. Yes full of cheesy bullshit storylines and some awful characters and actors. Some terrible early CG, atrocious set design and lighting for the most part but the show had heart, told a good story competently, had well written dialog and well developed characters and relationships and had some extremely based social commentary. Londo and G'Kar especially were on another level. I always enjoyed Patrick Stewart and his erudite soliloquies but Andreas Katsulas makes Patrick Stewart look like a little bitch every time he's onscreen - Criminally underutilized actor, probably because he looked kind of weird IRL.

Anyone noticed the really astonishing body count within B5s main cast?

Sinclair - dead irl

g'kar - dead irl

niggerdoc - dead irl

garibaldi - dead irl

zack - dead irl

and probably a few more. a little odd

From the main cast, Vir Cotto is dead irl too. Very strange.

Aside from that, I'm consistently entertained by the sheer volume of notable guest stars on the show. I end up having to pause every episode for a couple minutes of wiki hunting because every time someone new shows up it's like "FUCK, where do I recognize this guy from?" It's like they got every character actor and bit player in the business to show up in this thing.

I have to admit that B5 has been more or less good from the get go (although the more I watch it the less I think that DS9 Plagirized). Who would have thought that dramatic sci-fi stories set in with relatable characters (and archtypical relations) just is easy to watch and fun.

I also am really kinda amazed just seeing the ktichenette and bedroom in a sci-fi show. So many shows just gloss over that kind of cultural aspect (The province of russia, the londo and G'kar quarters and cooking a pigs head , etc). It helps that the show has a silly amount of acting talent in its half a dozen main characters.

And the CGI is growing on me. It 's pretty obviously a limitation but Im just treating it more as a style.

So far the only thing on the show that stands out as a flaw to me is that you never get a true sense of the scale of the station. Maybe this gets better later on (I'm only in season 2) but the majority of the action has been limited to just a few locations. I'd like to see more variety in a place with a population comparable to a small city. Especially with the interior surface of the cylinder being essentially "outdoors." They could have worked in some more location shooting. But budgets, I guess…

battlestar garbageica. starts interesting enough. then terminal redditosis kicks in. Annoying stonk females and beta faggots abound. Intrigue is shit tier especially compared to b5

Another great show that is (arguably) sci-fi is la femme nikita. It feels in-universe for deus ex. really underrated, but top tier despite its many flaws.

At least I'm not alone on this one. I've seen people fellating the show and talking about how it's this amazing, weird, brilliant show when the entire thing is just this weird wart-covered dick in terms of characters, plots, and writing. It has its moments, but it's painful suffering through each episode, nearly all of which could be trimmed down to half their length without losing any substance.

>Babylon 5

Ok but overrated if you don't like shows that focus on characters and overly dramatic plots over speculative fiction. CGI notoriously bad but not just low quality: with a budget that limited they should have picked a different style for them or something to make it less obvious.

>Red Dwarf

Quality depends on which series you're watching but it's all at least good. S1, S7 and S8 are the weaker ones.

>Stargate

SG-1 is great for 6 seasons, fine after that. Atlantis is watchable. Universe was shit.

>Battlestar Galactica

Soap opera in space. Fucking avoid. Original was better.

Haven't been to this board in months, but I'm glad to see that it's opening up into a general sci-fi board. It was getting to the point where we had nearly exhausted all discussion on the 5 main shows, and were left with nothing to talk about except STD and Orville, neither of which interested me. I love Babylon 5, it's my favorite show with DS9 being a close second. I started watching it not long after I finished Enterprise for the first time. Even with it's lower budget, the stories and actors made it spectacular. In fact, there wasn't a single character in the main cast that I didn't like, which I have never been able to say about any other sci-fi show, save for TOS.

>>32935

>Farscape

I finished that one just recently, and I have to say it really has a Star Wars feel to me. The way it focuses primarily on the action, with just enough lore to keep the plot moving along. Most things were more or less treated as "space magic" like the Scarans heatwave thing, or Sikozu's gravity-walk. It wasn't bad though, and as you say, it does become good if you stick with it. I liked it overall, however I don't think I'll be giving it a second watch any time soon.

>main villain was an incredible actor.

Scorpius was the single greatest thing about that show, hands down. Him and Captain Crais were my two favorite characters, and the performance by those two actors were often the reason I kept watching at times when I began to feel bored with the show.

Technically, I guess one could say it was Scorpius overall, but one of the strongest aspects of Farscape was how it treated the majority of antagonists as gray-areas. No one was fully evil, just some characters were more self-involved or agenda-driven than others.

A common mistake in serialised shows is an over-reliance on character monologues to grant lazy depth or 'character development'. Telling instead of showing. Serialisation has only been bad for American tv because it's entirely incompatible with needing 22+ episode long seasons. All you get is filler or really inconsistent pacing.
