Does the original series still hold up or are you guys going to hate it too?

I honestly only ever liked TNG when I was a toddler, and that was only the episodes with Data and Worf as the focus. Re-watching it now, the show has not aged as well as TOS and DS9, which have aged gracefully. At best only the seasons between 3 and the final one are mediocre to average in TNG, with the first 2 seasons aging like absolute dog shit. And Q is just so fucking annoying when compared to the seemingly super beings that Kirk would encounter and easily get rid of. Their sets have also aged like shit with DS9 and heck even TOS actually having a unique aesthetic (especially in the pilot for TOS) whilst TNG's sets are all generic, unimaginative, have aged like shit, or the worst offender being the inside of the ship which looks like the inside of a soccer mom's van.

I don't hate TNG, but the problems >>31943 brings up are undeniable. I think when people look back fondly at TNG, they're remembering that handful of episodes which are truly top-tier, and among the best in the franchise. But there's a lot of mediocre filler in between those. And many mediocre episodes could have been far worse, were they not carried by Stewart's acting.

It didn't. Some poster on some thread said something other than unqualified praise of TNG. Since we all know that anons always understate everything, and that all of /strek/ is one person, OP concluded that this was identical to /strek/ as an entity hating TNG.

>/strek/ hates TNG

no

though I would say it goes DS9>Orville>TNG>Enterprise>Voyager

I feel like part of the reason TNG seems not as good looking back is that it was new at the time. The timeline at that period was not as fleshed out as it became years down the road. Remember prior to TNG they only had TOS for cannon, this was 100 years in the future.

Now after the later seasons of TNG, and then the TNG movies, and then all of DS9 and then Voyager, that hole period of time and the cannon surrounding it are fleshed out; you can't go back and look at the first 5 episodes of TNG and blame them for shit feeling off.

The Original Series

>Pulpy Science Fiction Shorts

This is classic science fiction, like the ones you'd read in the old anthologies and magazines you could pick up back in the day. In retrospective they're kind of jewish, but usually not terribly bad and almost always entertaining. Each episode stands on its own and only a few things make more than one appearance. I imagine that watching this as a kid must have been a blast, not as great as reading even genre fiction, but still, pretty great. You have a pretty charismatic trio and everything. Zoomers should probably not bother with this shit as it won't feel very fresh to them and it hasn't aged well, but it could be watched ironically I guess.

The Next Generation

>West Coast Liberals in Space

According to reddit this was some kind of peak. In boredom maybe. The imagination and tone of the previous series is more or less gone here. Replaced with the foundation of the sanfran liberal mindset. All the characters are bland as fuck, the setting is now bland as fuck and no fun is allowed. No greek gods and no brains get stolen. Everyone is emasculated and effeminate. This is one of the most generic shows ever produced, it's blander than cardboard. Some rare episodes are good, but most of the time it's the kind of shit you watch when you've got literally nothing else going on. And the stuff that is good they eventually run into the ground with follow up epiosdes.

Deep Space Nine

>It's not Babylon 5, we swear!

Poor man's Babylon 5, but even that is superior to TNG in many ways. The characters are stronger, better written and they attempted big arcs instead of the completely episode based stuff they've done before which had a two parter at most. It's also got a literal space jew. But really, you'd be much better off just watcing B5.

Voyager

>Now with tits!

Star Trek goes femdom/feminist. Going full cuckmode we get a crew full of stronk womyn. It's awful. The premise is sort of interesting, as it was with DS9, but as usual that's squandered. There's no real difference between the space anomaly of the week we saw in TNG and the stuff we see in VOY. But unlike TNG this also has hot women, 7 of 9, in particularl. So I'd rank it higher. But other than the female focus it's really just a rehash of TNG. There's barely any big arcs, the premise almost never becomes relevant it's very heavy handed with the feminist stuff.

Enterprise

>See you in space, cowboy.

So they wanted to do some prequelkino tier stuff here, ditching the feminism in the process. I'd say that this show has the best Star Trek has to offer. It's not as aged as TOS and it's like a best of reel of the past series with the cancer removed. It's still sort of pozzed, but it's not nearly as bad as the other post-TOS shows. So you'd maybe think this would be a no brainer as the best show. Alas it's not, because they fucked up the prequel stuff with time travel bullshit instantly. Even so it's miles ahead of VOY and TNG, maybe DS9 depending on your preferences.

>complaints about set quality, ease of thwarting enemies and "quality"

you are still a toddler as far as your tastes go.

the only real complaint you can level at TNG is the fact that the show's premise is juvenile. the whole "we're the civilized good guys' amidst this galaxy full of miscreants is the biggest problem with TNG.

This is where they are operating from, yet watch how they treat certain officers who are decided to be 'a problem' they shit all over them and remain suspicious until they are finally voted off the ship. It's as proto sjw on that ship as it gets. You can see exactly where California was headed based on how those writers wrote for the show.

Examples include their treatment of lt broccoli. The way worf was put forward as this 'strong male' but was really just the whipping boy for proving that his masculinity was 'toxic'. he's always alllowed to voice his opinion, but he's only there to reinforce that his viewpoint is flawed. The writers eventually reveal him to be just a kiingaboo pretending to be manly but really he has no clue about it. if you continue to watch the show as you mature you should notice this as well. But i can't deny that the younger more naive me did enjoy the moral grandstanding the show tries to pass off as worthwhile plotpoints.

and as other anon's have mentioned the show did have some decent acting and even the side characters pulled their weight, The morally gray episodes or the episodes focused on personal character difficulties and arcs are the only ones i can still enjoy today.

DS9 wasn't even science fiction, it was space action, and a total rip off of Babylon 5.

It's very simple: the franchise has fallen one step each time. There's a lot of bad TOS episodes, but as a whole it was groundbreaking. TNG really did what a lot of people thought was impossible: reinvent Star Trek. It was so successful at it, that had two spinoffs. DS9 is fine, but it just wasn't really Star Trek, and I think people overlook how bad a lot of it was, especially with the TNG guest stars (Lwaxana, Gowran). Both DS9 and VOY only get online praise now, but at the time they were widely considered stupid TV. Anything past these four shows isn't worth mentioning.

Basically this. The problem with ranking each series or saying whether you love it or hate is is that all of them ran for many, many seasons and varied wildly in quality between them. As has been pointed out in other threads, while TNG had some of the best episodes of the franchise, it's also had some of the worst. And in between those two extremes, the grand majority of the episodes were actually quite forgettable and pointless. You end up with something of a bell-curve of quality in TNG, with a few horrible and a few great, but most of them just meh.

In all honesty, I can't really talk about how good TOS is or not, because I just can't tolerate how campy and low-budget the show is. It always feels like I'm watching some kind of parody caricature of 60's sci-fi; the rubber monster suits and the obvious ship models on strings. It's too distracting for me to pay attention to whether the writing is any good. Probably why I like the TOS movies so much.
