What you need to understand is that the responsibilities of a starship engineer extend beyond simple physical maintenance of the ship.
Part of their duty is to maintain an aura of crippling misery as a deterrent against psychic attacks. The hope is that the unrelenting despair emanating from the ship will make it an unappealing target for telepaths. This is an unwritten but essential element of starship defense, alongside other unconventional protection such as the use of needlessly explosive computer panels to offer background characters as blood sacrifices in exchange for plot armor.
The Enterprise-D didn't have this like the original Enterprise or DS9 did, which is why they had episodes like Night Terrors.

underrated post. Relics is not my personal canon, either, since in it there is no 75-year timeskip and thus Scotty never ended-up a drifter in a space RV. Also, both TNG and nuTrek heavily imply that Scotty is gay. This is unacceptable character assassination. Mr. Scott was canonically an oil driller and IRL Jimmy D. got down with pic related.
Scotty was based and OP is a faggot for trying to co-opt OBrien's suffering with him.

So know these feels as well my friends? And yeah, TNG and nu-Trek probably still hate TOS for not being diverse enough despite being the most diverse fucking show of all time after DS9. Fuck, how did things manage to get this bad?

I ain't. I'm saying that the "diversity" offered by TOS and DS9 should be enough for them, yet its not. They have to start making everyone trans, bipolar, some kind of queer or transpecies due to psychological bs. I'm just glad JJ isn't making more movies.

You seem to be under the impression they actually want diversity.
What they want is to tear down and destroy the old, to stoke a masturbatory outrage, and to parasitize off of what others made until they supplant it with their own version. Diversity is not a goal, just a means.

Sounds about right. Reminds me of some recent news and their own attempts to revision history, like claiming people of all races lived in medieval villages or trying to claim that the most iconic kiss of all time was done by a lesbian in disguise rather than a man.

Haven't any of you noticed, that the entire TOS core cast are lonely types?
Spock is unhappily married to a woman in love with Stonn.
Kirk pines for a long lost love, but his true love is the NCC-1701, cold metal.
McCoy's only opportunity is a Fabrini woman that doesn't work out
Sulu has a wife, but he never sees her.
Chekov is woefully single forever, gets shot over one.
Uhura, yep totally single, surrounded by men who ignore her
Nurse Chapel in love with married Spock
Yeoman Rand, ignored for the most part unless kirk is under alien influence
All that pathos, but thats the military life.

Did you? The only thing in the OP that didn't happen in the show was JJ's garbage and Scotty's wife which was told in the 1988 Retrospect comic. She didn't even JUST him with alimony. Scotty chose his ship over her.

The Scotty paradox; did Scotty retire and get trapped in stasis while believing Kirk was alive and well, or did Scotty drink himself to death believing Kirk died on board the Enterprise-C and he couldn't save him…

What happened is that Leonard Nimoy and Deforest Kelley decided that dignity outweighed the need for a paycheque and turned down showing up in Generations as the writers (Ronald Moore and Brannon Braga) originally planned, Walter Koenig and James Doohan decided that the need for a paycheque outweighed dignity and accepted the offer to be the replacements. Either Moore and Braga totally forgot about the Relics plot despite Moore also having written that episode, or they just hoped that nitpicking nerds wouldn't pay attention to that plot hole.
Sorry to break immersion and all, but let's not pretend that Star Trek plot holes are the result of anything but writing, casting, or budget issues.

Perhaps Scotty knew damn well Kirk had such massive balls and over inflated sense of self importance that he would probably manage to come back to life at least once. And he was right technically.
